Hidden away from the Washington Square Park. Service it's great, they speak perfect English and Chinese. The lobster noodles dish big enough to serve 4 people. It's $108 dollars, definitely worth it had a big amount of meat, it's the whole lobster about 4 pounds. The quail are one of their famous dish, it's delicious! The crutch of the skins and the juice from the meat is falling out with each bite. The fish is cooked perfectly, the sauces they used it's definitely hit homemade fish dish from your grandma. Will definitely come back here for birthday celebration!

Our friend, Aroon joined us and tried to explain Thai cuisine and guided us through the menu that's entwined with Malaysian and Singaporean fare. I did learn that as great as everything tasted, it was Americanized a bit and not really all that authentic, which makes sense to me. I played it safe with a sizzling beef plate that couldn't be beat. Everything came across the table from a rich flavoured Santan Lamb to Curry Fish head in Hot Pot. For six people we paid just under $200. Which I'm not sure, but think is reasonable for Bay Area, the tastes and the service (not that the service was all that great). There's not much in the way of ambiance or atmosphere. Generic but comfortable with a garden like feel. Even large leaves for chair backs! Unfortunately, those in the know in our group described a bland, uneventful experience and won't let me choose the venue again for awhile.

We were getting ready for my first Chinatown bar crawl and had to grab a bite before getting feral. I hadn't had Malaysian food in a while, so we decided to go here. WHAT I ORDERED: Roti canai Nasi lemak Beef satay THE FOOD: The nasi lemak was flavorful - super fragrant rice and every part of it was well done. The beef satay was also super flavorful, and was nice and juicy. I definitely need to order roti canai every time I eat Malaysian food and this one did not disappoint, very flaky and light. SERVICE: Great straightforward service - food didn't take too long to come out. BOTTOM LINE: Good place to catch up with friends as we did, or eat out with family. Glad to have this in my repertoire for whenever I visit SF again!

Penang Garden's pineapple fried rice, served on half a pineapple rind skin photos on the Internet looked attractive. Sadly, I can only order it without the rind skin. The waiter explained, a large pineapple has five servings of pineapple and only two of those will be served on half of a pineapple rind skin. Ridiculous if you ask me. I ended up getting the seafood pan fried Hong Kong style noodles $20 and a satay beef $16. The noodles came out surprisingly quick. That is because the vegetables were under cooked, especially the broccoli. The scallops, shrimps and squid needed more seasoning. As for the crispy noodles, most were already soaked making them not crispy. There weren't any burnt ends on the noodles and missing good wok hei (distinctive smoky, charred, and flavorful taste.) The satay beef skewers were OK. The clientele for Penang Garden was mostly Toisan speakers and some Cantonese speakers. Surprisingly, it was 70% full and the waiters seem to know everyone there. Service was excellent. It made up for the lackluster food and sans pineapple fried rice order. I would have been pissed if I ordered it and it came out without the pineapple rind skin. As with life, we don't always get what we want.

A decently busy restaurant, and a + if you can speak cantonese, but not necessary. Three of us got seated pretty fast but then the restaurant started filling up shortly. I come from Malay heritage so I was interested in being able to find something that reminds me of Malaysian cuisine. Balajan Kang Kung (4/5): nice and crunchy, but the balajan is pretty strong flavor and a bit salty if you get a lot of it on your leaves. Hainanese Chicken (3/5): we got half the chicken, not bad. it was pretty soft, but the chicken rice that it came with was not super authentic and very yellow so it was a little bit of a let down. Salted Egg Shrimp (3/5): I am not a fan of salted egg so I didn't try but my parents thought it wasn't bad. Beef Rendang Red Curry (3/5): the beef was really chewy, there wasn't much flavor inside the curry. i wish they had more sauce so you could put it on the rice and eat it. Overall, I was looking for a decent Malay restaurant to remind me of the staples that have to go back to Malaysia for and I wasn't too thrilled about the flavors and quality of food here, so I might not come back.

If you're walking up or down Washington, this is the sign you will see. It's between Kearny and Stockton.

Yum!! For anyone who has traversed to George Town on the Malaysian island of Penang, and indulged in the incredible street food, this restaurant is gold. I first tried roti canai (pronounced chanai) some 30 years ago as a wandering backpacker. I never forgot this delicious roti canai. This particular roti is not oily or greasy (discuss amongst yourselves; not a critic, just a hungry eater!). In addition, it keeps you warm in the cold!! Perfect for vegetarians. Lots and lots of additional selections of entrées with meat, seafood, chicken, etc. Quick professional service. Cash preferred. Chill ambiance and welcoming staff. Saved myself a trip back to Georgetown. Thank you so much! Yum

Hours listed on yelp is not accurate, by the time we arrived they are closing. I like their roti, thin and crispy. I've been here a few time for dinner, I might try their lunch special next time.

We came for a weekday night and there were several parties that took up more than half of the restaurants so they only had a few open tables for other patrons. The menu is huge making it hard to make a decision! We ordered the Penang Salmon, Belachan lady finger, Belachan eggplant and Seafood chow fun. I would recommend the penang samon and belachan eggplant. The sauce for the penang salmon was good and I liked the spiciness and light coating of the eggplant. The rest was also good. Service was ok. As it got busier in the night, it seemed the staff forgot about us. We ordered two dishes to-go: chicken chow fun and a soup. They gave us a quail instead of chicken chow fun which was disappointing. There is an underground parking garage (Portsmouth Square Plaza Garage) across the street that's $8 after 5pm.

They are always my first choice who go SF! Good food! Good service! I like it a lot! 123456

Nasi Lemak

It's a 3.5 star for me! This place is quite unique in Chinatown because it serves Malaysian food -- I don't think there are a lot of Malaysian food in the area. I also learned that Penang is a state in Malaysia! Food: 4/5. We got a variety of food from soup to small dishes. The food is decent and delicious! Price is decent, around ~$18 per dish. - Bak kut teh: delicious soup!! I'm so glad we ordered it. One of the best dishes, the umami soup with a hint of bitterness just hits right for me. There's also some pork belly and meats in the soup. - Pork chop: meaty, honey glazed pork chop, super tender and melts in my mouth. - Nasi lemak: pretty average They gave us a free dessert soup at the end! Delicious purple rice dessert. Service: 3/5. They are kinda under staffed and it was hard to make an order. The food however came out really quickly! The restaurant is quite big, they have several big tables that are already reserved. We were able to get in quite easily for a small table.

Chili crab and noodles

We only come here to eat their hot and spicy crab, which is lickilty lick yummy! I love those deep fried buns to soak the sauces with, it is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Hmmm.... The other favorite dish is the Indonesian shrimp! OMG, the flavors are addictive. We don't always order this dish because it costs $$$. But it's a must try when you dine here! Service is good. They added 18% service fee even when there's only 2 ppl dining. Unfortunately, I no longer work in SF and need to drive in to eat here, so, they no longer provide validation for parking, pandemic has killed a lot of perks for small businesses like these :(. OK - that's it for now :)

Frank M.

The waiter here is hella shady! Overcharged our bill and tried to play it off. If you're a tourist, please watch out. Don't buy the crab advertised on their poster out front, it's a waste of money. There's way better food options in Chinatown.

It's been a while since the last time we've come to Burma Superstar, but we saw the restaurant week…read moremenu and decided it was about time to come back! This time it was a $90 set with 2 drinks, 2 servings of rice of your choice, a trio of their salads, and 2 entrees - honestly a great deal and I think the waitstaff mentioned it's about a $150 value, which I completely believe. Our party of 4 arrived around 8:15, and waited about 15 minutes to get seated - definitely try to join the ahead of time because they saved us! It's cozy, clean and well decorated inside, and though the tables are a little close you have plenty of space and it's not too loud for conversations. We got two sets of the $90 menu - which was probably a mistake since we were stuffed and had plenty of leftovers. Drinks: we got 4 different drinks - the mango Lassi, spiced sunset, nanda breeze and burma cooler. All of these were excellent, refreshing and great for balancing the strong flavors of the entrees! Rice: we always get the coconut rice, so this time we opted for 2 scoops of coconut rice and 2 scoops of the burmese fried rice - the fried rice was tasty but not as fragrant as the coconut rice so we'll probably stick to that in the future Salad trio: this included the iconic tea leaf salad, along with the pea shoot salad, and superstar noodle salad. The pea shoot salad was a surprising favorite, and I'd even consider getting that over the tea leaf salad in the future! The noodle salad was pretty filling but tasty - maybe good if you're not planning to get a bunch of entrees On to the entrees: these are all super flavorful, umami, and can get a little heavy if you don't balance it out with the rice and salads. We got the pazun kyaw (chili prawns), nga phel hin (a sort of fish patty in tomato curry sauce with fresh cucumber slices), chili lamb, and basil chili pork belly. The chili lamb was a standout - super tender, flavorful and our overall favorite. The basil chili pork belly is a close second, but a bit oilier and heavier. The nga phel hin was tasty but a little too heavy /salty - slightly helped by the cucumber but there were only 4 slices with the dish. The chili prawns had great flavor but unfortunately were a little overcooked. Overall, this was an excellent meal! Burma Superstar never fails to be a great place for a large, flavorful family style dinner. I'm glad we got to try multiple new things from the menu through the restaurant week offer, and I'll be able to switch up my typical order in the future based on what we tried this time!

Things changed: more breading on the chicken (spicy crispy chicken) and reduced protein in some of the other dishes, too. But the flavors still hit and its popularity hasn't dimmed much on the nights I've gone over the last few years. I bought their cookbook years back but much of what I like isn't in it, so I keep coming back for the food and community vibes. There is a communal table, which I appreciate though I tend to sit at the bar when I go alone. It's worth it to get a view of what's happening all around you. The B S in Alameda doesn't have the same energy or coziness, but it is easier to access with safer parking (now windows broken there but I've had that here and been hassled walking to/from) and dramatically shorter waits. The diversity of the diners is much lower than this one though (Alameda is still mostly old white people) and the menu has more options here, so I'll continue to return again and again and recommend it to others ... and hope to not have to replace car windows.

Mgr name edit: Jessica to Tasha…read more 5/9/26 Apologies in advance for the lengthy review We were invited for a special milestone birthday event here last night for my SIL. Party of 20 right at dinner opening of 5pm. Reservations were made and all things started off great. We arrived 15 minutes before the restaurant opened and as we got closer to 5:00pm, at least a dozen people started waiting outside to enter. We were admitted first to be seated as our reserved table was already set up. Aesthetics inside were thought through with the bar centrally located. Our main server was Miau and she was attentive and delightful from start to finish. We ordered drinks and started off with quite a few appetizer platters for the table. We noticed another server (Tasha) almost immediately that didn't 'ask' us but very aggressively told us (mainly adults) to gather the menu's (before we even ordered entrees) and put it in the center of the table so she can collect them. Once appetizers and drinks were half consumed, Miau came by to take our entree orders while we continued to socialize, mingle and catch up. Beautifully decorated entree plates started flowing and this is when the other assisting server Tasha started bringing dishes out. With music playing in the background and chatter among other tables, we can barely hear her calling out entrees from one end of the table to the other table. I made eye contact and told her we couldn't hear her and she just dropped the dish on the table and walked away. Thankfully it was our nephew's entree close by. Tasha then came by with (2) salmon dishes which one was requested spicy and when we went to clarify with our brother if he ordered spicy, she rolled her eyes dramatically and sighed loudly like we were being rude and inconvenient. We were completely appalled! The restaurant wasn't even packed! There were a few other tables dining but still a few empty tables around. We ended up asking Miau who the other server was since she was rude to us and Miau told us she was the manager. :O Tasha's attitude matches how the women's restroom looks! Honestly all the food from apps, mains tasted all mediocre at best but it does come out presented well. Drinks were good and at going rates of $15/per or so. This establishment is centrally located facing the Ferry building, it has a great location. Parking garage made things simple but they had an event today so all parking was a flat $35! The (2) star rating is for the business overall. I would give (5) stars for Miau (our main server) and for the aesthetics of the restaurant which showcases a modern beautiful restaurant and location is perfect which makes sense for the prices being charged. However, the level of service from the person you have chosen to represent your establishment as the manager (Tasha) ruined this milestone birthday for our beloved sister and family, Unfortunately, as a family of 17 adults and 3 tween/teenagers were extremely disappointed and would not be returning. San Francisco is a known destination with so many restaurant options that we will gladly choose to spend our $1,838.00 (invoice with 20% gratuity) elsewhere and not recommend your establishment.

Both are rum-based and had a really nice kick, especially the Soi Ari with the pandan in the aftertaste (which we found super refreshing). Food we ordered were the Nam Tok Beans, the Pad Khee Mao, and the rabbit curry. Both of us love spice so the Nam Tok Beans blew us away! Did not expect that kind of packed flavor at all but it makes a seemingly ordinary bean dish so much more exciting. The noodles were cooked perfectly and made a great in between to the rabbit curry. Which speaking of, oh my god??? SUPER tender and fall off-the-bone. Rabbit can be a hard dish to put on for people who have never tried it, but I really appreciate that it's not as bone-y as other rabbit dishes I've had in the past. It really was like chicken but softer. Wow wow wow. Huge shoutout to our bartender for giving us extra birthday shots on the house. Never had Amaro before tonight but it was delicious. Did not get his name unfortunately but he's fantastic! The reason I give 4 stars despite the great experience was because I noticed less urgency from the host and the servers in terms of getting stuff out. Doesn't help that the place is smaller and more expensive for a Michelin star establishment. Sitting by the bar made a huge difference for us since we had a great experience with our bartender, but I have a feeling that those at regular tables that night might've lost patience with the wait times for certain dishes. TLDR: if you love spicy Thai food, have the money to spend, and aren't in a rush, this place is worth checking out.

It's right in the middle of the chaos that is the Tenderloin, but if you can stomach wading through the endless sea of downtrodden humanity, encampments, dog poo, and drug use, this is a nice spot to eat. Once you enter the front doors, you are instantly transported to a world of tranquility, good food, and excellent service. The restaurant is quite big, with minimal decor, keeping the focus on service, food, and simplicity. It has a nice bar with seating for 6 with a natural wood top and bar stools. The center of the restaurant is a long banquet table for parties of 12+ The rest of the restaurant has well-spaced, clean, and simple tables for two or four, and everything is bright, airy, and neat. Background music is soft, and unobtrusively loud, allowing for quiet conversation & relaxation. The walls are simple, with just some murals with quotes and information about their history, philosophy, mission statement & influences. It was all clean, simple, and made for interesting reading. We ordered: fresh coconut milk, jasmine tea, rice, cashew nut tofu, and silver noodle salad to keep things lite and healthy for the night ahead. The $8 coconut milk was very fresh, and quite large enough to justify the high price. It was cold, refreshing, and tasty! The silver noodle salad was a bit complicated to eat, with huge chunks of cabbage that should have been cut up to blend in better. The lime marinade ended up pooling at the bottom of the dish, so it didn't really mix in well with the other ingredients, so you had to spoon it out and pour it over your serving. The noodles were too long and were difficult to eat with a fork, chopsticks & slurping them would have been better. The cashew nut tofu was very good & it was very plentiful in tofu, cashew nuts, and chili peppers. Not overly spicy, but just right. The amount of food that we got for $40 was perfect, and everything tasted very good & fresh. My only criticism was that it was served in a way that made it difficult to eat with a fork, cutting things up into more manageable pieces would have been much better. Service was stellar. The three nice Thai waitresses hustled around the entire restaurant incessantly during a busy Tuesday night dinner rush. They were attentive, polite, demure, and professional. The kept the water refilled, brought out new clean plates, and explained the menu very well. Had a good meal here last night. This is one of the stand out places that I've eaten at in the Tenderloin. It is clean, peaceful, and has a nice atmosphere inside. I really liked the minimalistic decor, which lent to focusing solely on food & service. Everything that we ate & drank was fresh, tasty, and fairly inexpensive. My only criticism was how the food was served, it made it difficult to eat with a fork. Ingredients were too big and could've been cut smaller, or, we could have been given chopsticks or a knife. But, I would come back here again to try out some noodle or rice or soup dishes, maybe I'll just bring my own utensils. This is a nice food oasis in an area that isn't so nice!
