I had dinner at Burma's three time visiting from Houston for 5 days. The food was exceptional, healthy and fresh. It's definitely on my agenda next I visit! The service was outstanding and the ambiance comfortable and pleasant! I came home in search for a Burmese Restaurant, to no avail! read more

Still no reservations but damn their food is so delicious. Continue to love their coconut rice, fiery anything, curry anything, their vegetable stir fry. Their noodles and fried rice. I love their food so much. read more

I had my 40th birthday party here and that was fabulous. It's been a favorite for many years but isn't as fabulous since the pandemic hit. Things changed: more breading on the chicken (spicy crispy chicken) and reduced protein in some of the other dishes, too. But the flavors still hit and its popularity hasn't dimmed much on the nights I've gone over the last few years. I bought their cookbook years back but much of what I like isn't in it, so I keep coming back for the food and community vibes. There is a communal table, which I appreciate though I tend to sit at the bar when I go alone. It's worth it to get a view of what's happening all around you. The B S in Alameda doesn't have the same energy or coziness, but it is easier to access with safer parking (now windows broken there but I've had that here and been hassled walking to/from) and dramatically shorter waits. The diversity of the diners is much lower than this one though (Alameda is still mostly old white people) and the menu has more options here, so I'll continue to return again and again and recommend it to others ... and hope to not have to replace car windows. read more

Cozy ambiance in a lively area. My issue was with the food Tea leaf salad = good! really unique flavor and peanut crunch is fantastic. This dish is probably keeping them in buisness Samosa = way overcooked/burned Platha and Dip = bland probably needed salt, extremely expensive, curry dipping sauce was flavorless Salt and Pepper Chicken = soggy Nan dyi dok noodles - flavorless with bad odor and overcooked noodles. Bordering inedible Service was OK - they forgot my request in my reservation. And pretty generalized recommendations for "walking us through the menu" Unfortunately I won't be coming back due to the bad food :( read more

This was my first time trying burmese food and my mind was blown. I loved the coconut rice. The tea leaf salad is a must try. I will definitely be coming back to try more foods! My only critique is I wished the beef was a little more tender, almost like brisket. The meat was a bit hard to chew. read more

Excellent find in Oakland! We ordered chicken coconut soup and a tofu stir fry. Both were well made and good portioned. We also ordered a mocktail - pink cassia - it was fizzy and had a delicate rose flavor. Must try while in Temescal area of Oakland. Service was efficient and courteous! read more

I normally come here for dinner, but tried their lunch for the first time and loved it. Usually we would order family style and share lots of meals, but during lunch time they had a lunch menu that came with a smaller portion of entree and side which was perfect! The tea leaf salad and samusa soup was amaaaaazing. The tea leaf salad has lettuce and cabbage tossed in fermented tea leaf dressing and crunchy mix of nuts, tomatoes, and jalapenos. The samusa soup was very hearty with vegetarian samusa, falafel, and fried potato. It was literally a samusa soup that tasted just like a samusa. Highly recommend this vegetarian lunch option. Also, the chili lamb tossed in the wok with onion, rice wine, and thai basil was a lovely entree. It came with a side of ginger salad and coconut rice. You can request regular white rice if you prefer that over the coconut rice, but I thought the sweet coconut rice was perfect with the spicy chili lamb entree! read more

I had the mohinga, pumpkin chicken stew, and Burmese vegetable samusas. Pumpkin chicken stew was AMAZING. I just wish there was more pumpkin. There was like 2 pieces as you can see in the picture.... Samosas were very good. Loved the sauce. Mohinga i thought would have actual catfish in it.... There was nothing. Unless that's shredded so thinly it was floating in the broth. Just thought it would have h chunks of fish. It was okay thought probably wouldn't eat again. Also this was pricy for what you get. 4/5 for skimpy portions. read more

Came here on a Monday afternoon and it was really empty. The ambiance is really nice, and I could definitely see it being an excellent date spot. The two of us ordered the Fiery Beef and Spicy Noodles and both I would highly recommend. The Fiery Beef was extremely tender with great flavor, my favorite of the two. Overall, I would rate the food a solid 4.5 stars and along with the ambiance of the restaurant, this is definitely a spot that you should check out! read more

2nd time here in 3 months. Absolutely, a must visit for Burmese cuisine lovers. Good for vegetarians and the cocktails are unique. Their holiday menu is interesting and there is quite a lot to experience from it. Nice ambience, location and the staff is cordial. Where else can you get a tea leaf salad of this quality? The prices are steep, but I strongly feel like that salad is the only food item that carries this 5 star review. The staff are extremely polite and attentive. The ambiance of the restaurant is clean and thoughtful, with a few cultural pieces and warm colors throughout. Offerings: - Tea Leaf Salad: 10/10, no notes. Okay, some notes for those who have not had one... it is the perfect balance of flavors and textures. Crispy lettuce with crunchy roasted spices, and a savory unctuous fish sauce based dressing. And the fermented tea leaves just provide the perfect texture, flavor, herbaceous addition. I cannot get enough. - Eggplant Red Curry with Chicken: This was a good dish, all the elements were fresh. I felt like the curry could have been a bit bolder, but perhaps I'm used to Indian or Thai curries. - Garlic noodles with Shrimp: again, a basic dish at its core. The red sauce served on the side was the star here. It provided a tangy pop of additional flavor that I was looking for. - Iced Burmese Milk Tea: I really liked this. Good strong tea flavor and I liked the condensed milk in it. Overall, this place is a bit overpriced. But I will still return for the tea leaf salad. Maybe I'll try the Burma Bites down the street instead - same owner, and the salad is $1 cheaper! read more

Burma is a great spot for dinner and drinks! It is cute and quaint inside with limited outside seating. The service was slow for a Monday, however it was busy! Our first server forgot about us and didn't put in our last order of drinks. After 20 minutes, we finally flagged someone else down who came over and apologized and removed those drinks from our tab. The food was really delicious, and the drinks were very tasty! Overall a decent experience! read more

3.5 stars but am feeling generous and rounding up to 4. My friend and I decided to hand an early dinner/drinks at Burma Superstar on New Year's Eve. I made a reservation on Open Table and we were seated immediately. We were told, and I was aware because this was mentioned on OT, that reservations were limited to 90 mins because of the holiday. Not a big deal as we wanted an early dinner to avoid the crowds and chaos that comes with being out late on NYE. We started off with drinks - I had a cocktail with lychee, lime, and dragonfruit and friend had a nonalcoholic mango mocktail. Unfortunately I forget the name but it was pretty and tasty. Almost too pretty to drink, lol! For our entrees, I had the mango tofu and she had the spicy & crispy chicken. We each got an order of coconut rice. The mango tofu was one of the few dishes they said they can't adjust the heat when I asked for mild. My spice tolerance has been growing so I can now handle medium spice. Waiter said the spice ranged from medium to high. At first I was able to handle the spice, especially with the coconut rice. About halfway through the spiciness kicked up and was too spicy for me to handle. Sometimes (like tonight!) I crave spice but then regret it later. However, I was a bit surprised they couldn't adjust the spice. For comparison, Burma 2 in Walnut Creek's mango tofu CAN be customized to mild spice. If B2 can do it, I fail to see why BS can't. Although I didn't try it as I'm pescatarian, my friend said the outside of her chicken was spicy too. As for the service, our waiter was friendly and made good recommendations. However, we waited a LONG time for the check. Having said that, I don't think the delay was his fault and more the restaurant getting busier due to NYE. Splitting the checks and paying by card is easy. Prices are a bit higher compared to Burma 2. Verdict (for future CA trips): -Would come back for sure for drinks, especially during happy hour -wouldn't order the mango tofu but would order other dishes that are/can be made with mild spice. -coconut rice is a great side! Last review of 2025 so happy new year! read more

Burma Superstar - Mango Tofu, Coconut Rice, & lychee/dragonfruit cocktail (forget the actual name) - Burmese Near Me - Oakland, California

Still love this place. We showed up with a party of six and something went wrong with our reservation. The gentleman at the front of house did everything he could to accommodate us and we were seated in less than five minutes with a pretty packed house. The cocktails tend toward the sweeter side but there are a bunch to choose from. We ordered a bit of everything and it was all really good. The pork belly with mustard greens was a little light on the greens but the pork was perfection and the spice was just right. The other thing to call out is how quickly and piping hot the dishes were delivered to the table. Items are family style, if you wish, and we all got to take a little something home to remember the experience by so the portion sizes are not small. There is something for everyone here and no one will leave hungry. read more

Let's just say if this was a talent show everybody would get a 10 and this would be a winner. We went when it was downtime and lunch was ending. One thing I did not like is that they give me a lunch menu with the specials knowing that's already past 230 and I was not able to order. As frustrating that was, I said, forget it and then I got my beverage and let me tell you the gentleman that made it was fantastic. All I said was just make it a little bit sweeter and he made it on point with some loving love. When I ordered it the second time, I literally told the bartender that I would like him to make it because it was fantastic. We ordered the fried calamari as an appetizer and honestly, I was a little bit taken back because many of the pieces were just dough. I even had to break a few of them apart just to make sure I was not crazy! But let me tell you it was still delicious and that sauce that it came when was on point and fire! We ordered the garlic noodles and man let me tell you those were on point. I ordered mine with tofu and my friend ordered hers with chicken and let me tell you great. My partner ordered the fried chicken and it was interesting because the batter that they use is a mixture of flour and cornstarch. That's what makes them so fluffy and delicious . It came topped with a little bit of saffron and it just looked like a beautiful plate. Another thing that bugged me was the charge for just rice. It was interesting because one thing that also got me was seeing everybody that worked there eating at the bar and when my drink was empty, nobody came and filled it. I guess maybe I'm old school and just want service when I go out. read more

This Burma superstar is quite different from the location in SF. Their portion is definitely big and enough for even two meals, which is a good plus. We liked all dishes. They are flavorful and delicious. People here are also nice and quick to respond. What I liked the most was the coconut rice. When we asked for boxes, they even packed us some extra coconut rice. THE BIG: Located in Oakland in the Temescal neighborhood. Indoor and outdoor seating available and beautiful rustic interior. Street parking available. THE BLACK AND WHITE: We came here around 7pm on a Wednesday night and it was popping. Fortunately the wait for walk-ins wasn't too terrible. Seating is a bit tight, but that is what happens for a popular spot. For food, we got the garlic noodles, tea leaf salad, and burmese spicy chicken curry and mango lassi. The favorite was the tea leaf salad, it had so much unique textures and flavors. The other dishes were alright, not as a good as the tea leaf salad but definitely a must is to wash down the meal with a nice tangy mango lassi. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall, we spent around $86 on the meal. Highly recommend getting the tea leaf salad. read more

Food: 3.75 out of 5 First time here and I was surprisingly underwhelmed. When I hear Burmese food my taste buds often salivate thinking about it. Our table of 9 ordered a handful of dishes and I was impressed by only the tea leaf salad and beef dish. The pork pumpkin curry and chicken fried rice had you feeling something was missing. Service: 4 out of 5 Friendly server, but ran out of table water a few times without a refill. Environment: 5 out of 5 Cozy restaurant in Oakland. Would recommend a group of no larger than 5-6 people. Can feel a bit tight with anything larger. Overall:3.75 out of 5 A restaurant where you can dip your toes into Burmese cuisine for the first time. Unfortunately my taste buds crave the balance of spicy, fermented, & aromatic spices I know Burmese food is. Would recommend Mandalay in SF if you want the pioneer & James Beard Foundation award of Burmese food. read more

Now my second time having Burmese food, so still not a pro, but have stuff to compare to! Came in on a weekend for lunch and it was surprisingly super empty. I had a reservation, but did not need it. The interior is warm, pretty modern, full bar, decorated for Xmas which was cute. Service was fast and super accommodating as our group had a few dietary restrictions. My group and I ordered a large variety of items to try. Of course the tea leaf salad. It was okay! Not as good as other tea leaf salads I've had, but maybe because I had this one w vegan sauce. The platha dip was yummy, satisfying little flat breads. We also had this mung bean tofu? Which was a super smooth texture, and slightly sweet. Didn't hate it, didn't love it. For mains, I tried the sesame tofu, which was bad. The sauce was okay, and the proportion of batter fry and tofu was v off. And the tofu itself was firm and dry. All the other mains I had were really good tho. I tried the pork curry and the ginger pork belly which were both delicious. I really enjoyed their coconut rice as well. It's on the sweet side which is interesting, but it was so addicting to eat. Overall, some things were a big hit for me. Big flavors that weren't too heavy. But some others were a miss. I do love the huge variety in their menu though. And all their drinks sounds super yummy! read more

Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 I've always been a loyal fan of Burma Superstar since 2017. I've went to 4 of their sister restaurants. They never fail to satisfy my cravings. Skillet Shrimp: 5/5 DELICIOUS! Would love to order this again. Mango Shrimp: 5/5 SOOO GOOD. Something about cooked mangos, it hits the spot. Salt and Pepper Calamari: 5/5 Calamari is perfectly battered! Flavor was on point. Braise Pork Belly w/ Pickle Mustard Greens: 4/5 There was a little too much dark soy sauce which over powered the dish. Honestly I personally think their sister restaurant Burma Love make it the best. Second would be Burma Superstar in Inner Richmond. Platha & Dip: 4/5 Good but to be honest, I think the Inner Richmond location has the best Platha & Dip. Tea Leaf Salad: 4/5 Good and nutty as always. Salt and Pepper Calamari: 3/5 Chicken was a bit dry but flavorful. read more

I had a great time at Burma Superstar! My friend and I went on a Tuesday night, and we sat by the bar. The place was pretty packed, and the lighting is pretty dim. We had servers checking in on us often, and asked for their suggestions when we placed our orders. The food came out soon after, and they were all very good! We got their Tea Leaf Salad, which is what they are known for. Personally, it is not my favorite. I think the fermented tea leaves are too strong for my taste, but I like how generous they are with the toppings. Super crunchy salad. However, the Burmese Samusas were delicious! They were packed with potato, and the sauce that accompanied it pairs so well. I think the outer wrapper was a little thick, but overall this dish is very hearty and warm. As for the entrees, we got the Fiery Tofu with Lamb, and Fried Chili Catfish. The lamb was really good, it was not too gamey and the tofu was tender. This dish was saucy, and they gave us a bowl of Coconut Rice on the house to pair! The rice was so good, and matches well. The fried catfish was also not my favorite, I felt like there wasn't enough fish meat and had to pick out a lot of bones. This dish was also on the drier end as there was no sauce. My only thing against Burma Superstar was how expensive everything was though. The total bill ended up being over $100, and so this is not a budget friendly place. But for the quality of food and experience, I would recommend to check out this restaurant for a nice date night. read more

Finally trying Burma! We got takeout since it was a bit late. LAPHET THOKE Tea Leaf Salad Our Tea Leaf Salad was voted by Sunset Magazine as the Best of the West-Salad and winner of the "Good Food Award" in 2017. Mixed table-side, this salad/appetizer is enjoyed by Burmese people throughout the country. It is a fermented tea leaf dish tossed with a crispy mixture of nuts, chickpeas, sesame seeds, fried garlic, with lettuce. Contains shrimp powder and fish sauce. It is truly "a party in your mouth" and it will change your mind about what salad can be. Vegan Upon Request, Gluten Free It's good, but nothing up to the hype. Maybe because we got it to go and didn't get it to try it there. I do love the different textures. COCONUT CHICKEN CURRY Chicken thighs simmered in an aromatic stew of coconut milk, turmeric, Thai basil, string beans, and chili. Mild or extra spicy upon request. Gluten Free The chicken curry is good, but the rice outshined the curry in my opinion. COCONUT RICE Jasmine rice cooked in coconut milk. Vegan, Gluten Free SO SO good. So fragrant and coconut-y. GARLIC NOODLES A Chinese influenced dish sold from pushcarts throughout Burma. Egg noodles with fried garlic, sprinkled with scallions, fresh onions, cucumbers, and our house sweet and spicy sauce. Best thing we got! Garlicky, sweet, savory. Definitely would order this. read more

LOVE the food here. Definitely on the pricey side, but it feels upscale inside and they also have heated outdoor seating for those with pets. Plenty of vegetarian options. We tried the Shan Noodle with tofu. At first I was hesitant to about the pickled greens, but it all tasted delicious and balanced. They brought it out plated beautifully, with each ingredient separated, and then the waiter mixed it up for us. Forgot to snap a pic before he mixed it up! Funny enough I was looking for a different restaurant and I came across this spot and I'm so glad I did! Right off the bat, we were quickly seated, greeted and given water while we looked over the menu. The staff was really kind and informative. I happen to have asked one staff member what his bracelet was made out of he wasn't sure and when he came back, he found out for me, which was so unexpected and so funny and sweet. The food was absolutely incredible. We ordered fully vegetarian and you would never have missed the meat anyway. We had the vegetarian fried rice, the sesame, tofu, plain garlic noodles, and the string beans a very basic but strong combo they all paired really well with each other and was a very delicious meal. The string beans gave a really wonderful kick and with the fried rice added so much depth to the flavors. The garlic noodles are a classic staple, but with the sesame tofu, we got a really great savory flavor with a touch of sweetness, and I really loved that the tofu fried and a nice crispy way I love tofu, but I noticed that it has a tendency to be prepared a little too soggy so this had a great texture to it! I definitely plan on coming back and exploring more of the menu and drinks! read more

Overall four stars, but had a three store experience last time. Got the rainbow salad for pick up and there was no dressing. Too much of a hassle to drive back, but so disappointing for an almost $30 item (large). My main gripe is that the prices have really skyrocketed since they've popularized while I think quality has gone a bit down. It's still a fun place to take out of towners and I love the coconut rice, garlic noodles, and samosas. read more

Super helpful that I could put our name on the waitlist online. Drove for 30 minutes, arrived, and our table was ready. Staff was fantastic and our waiter, in particular, was super helpful to help curate the menu which was full of new flavors and combinations we were unfamiliar with. The tea leaf salad, of course is, outstanding. The salt and pepper shrimp was mediocre, tiny shrimp in too much batter for my taste. The chicken with mint dish would have been better described as chicken with cumin. It was fantastic, but the mint was indiscernible. The Burmese lamb curry was phenomenal! We also had the eggplant that was solid. I have another favorite Burmese spot in San Francisco. But Burma Superstar does more dishes well than my favorite restaurant. You likely will have nothing bad at this place. Everything will be good and some things will be fantastic. It's well worth a visit! read more

My friend made a reservation for outside on a cold Monday evening in December. Thankfully, the staff were able to find us a spot at the bar where it was much warmer. The bartender and our server were both delightful and took great care of us. They gave us great recommendations. We got the tea leaf salad - a must at any Burmese restaurant - and this one did not disappoint! We also ordered the chicken curry plus green beans and the mango chicken. I preferred the curry. My team and I ordered Burma Superstar for takeout, and it was one of our tastiest team dinners to-date! We ordered the tea salad, sautéed garlic eggplant, sesame tofu, and garlic noodles. While the tea leaf salad is best experienced in the restaurant - the servers do an excellent job tossing all of the ingredients at the table - we tried our best to toss the salad ourselves without everything flying all over the place. The tea salad is always a standout dish, as is the sautéed garlic eggplant that melts in the mouth. The sesame tofu was decent, although it could have benefited with more sauce. The garlic noodles were solid, but next time, we'd probably stick with jasmine rice as our side dish. The portions were on the smaller side; although we ordered one dish per person, we could have benefitted from two more dishes to share. The meal was delicious overall, and Burma Superstar has now entered our team dinner rotation. read more

Burma Superstar - Tea Leaf Salad, Garlic Noodles, Sesame Tofu, Eggplant with Garlic Sauce - Burmese Near Me - Oakland, California

"Excellent Burmese food on Telegraph Ave, little bit pricey" Came here as a party of 3 for lunch on a Friday right around noon. The interior was open-air on one side and a bit dark, but since it was a beautiful day, we opted for the outdoor covered area in front of the restaurant. We were sat very quickly, but the place was already hopping. We decided to share dishes and ordered the mango shrimp, eggplant with garlic sauce, and the wok-tossed broccoli. And a side of coconut rice to eat the other dishes with (and cut the heat if anything was spicy). I had the sparking lemonade & fresh ginger, and my daughter had a yogurt/ mango drink. Every dish was excellent. I really liked the mango "matchstick" pieces that came with the shrimp-- the full dish was super tasty. And I appreciated that the shrimp was already fully peeled (why doesn't every place do this???). The eggplant was absolutely delicious-- it was Japanese eggplant slices cooked to perfection and flavored just right. The broccoli was also really good, also adding the needed "green vegetable" to the meal. And the coconut rice went well with all dishes. I will add that I absolutely loved the sparkling lemonade with ginger-- felt super refreshing on a warm day. My daughter really liked her drink as well. Service was spot on-- super friendly with big smiles, great information on all questions asked, checking on us and refilling water as needed, and promptly letting us pay when we were done. To be clear, this is not a cheap place-- most entrees are in the $17-30 range, and the portions are good but not "big"... one dish alone may not leave you full if you came in hungry and have a big appetite. But the quality was very high, which made me more inclined. Overall, not a place I'd go to weekly given the price, but a delightful excursion to get try/ enjoy again some Burmese dishes or to share with visiting friends. I recommend. read more
