I had my 40th birthday party here and that was fabulous. It's been a favorite for many years but isn't as fabulous since the pandemic hit. Things changed: more breading on the chicken (spicy crispy chicken) and reduced protein in some of the other dishes, too. But the flavors still hit and its popularity hasn't dimmed much on the nights I've gone over the last few years. I bought their cookbook years back but much of what I like isn't in it, so I keep coming back for the food and community vibes. There is a communal table, which I appreciate though I tend to sit at the bar when I go alone. It's worth it to get a view of what's happening all around you. The B S in Alameda doesn't have the same energy or coziness, but it is easier to access with safer parking (now windows broken there but I've had that here and been hassled walking to/from) and dramatically shorter waits. The diversity of the diners is much lower than this one though (Alameda is still mostly old white people) and the menu has more options here, so I'll continue to return again and again and recommend it to others ... and hope to not have to replace car windows. read more

I had the mohinga, pumpkin chicken stew, and Burmese vegetable samusas. Pumpkin chicken stew was AMAZING. I just wish there was more pumpkin. There was like 2 pieces as you can see in the picture.... Samosas were very good. Loved the sauce. Mohinga i thought would have actual catfish in it.... There was nothing. Unless that's shredded so thinly it was floating in the broth. Burma is a great spot for dinner and drinks! It is cute and quaint inside with limited outside seating. The service was slow for a Monday, however it was busy! Our first server forgot about us and didn't put in our last order of drinks. After 20 minutes, we finally flagged someone else down who came over and apologized and removed those drinks from our tab. I normally come here for dinner, but tried their lunch for the first time and loved it. Usually we would order family style and share lots of meals, but during lunch time they had a lunch menu that came with a smaller portion of entree and side which was perfect! The tea leaf salad and samusa soup was amaaaaazing. The tea leaf salad has lettuce and cabbage tossed in fermented tea leaf dressing and crunchy mix of nuts, tomatoes, and jalapenos. The samusa soup was very hearty with vegetarian samusa, falafel, and fried potato. It was literally a samusa soup that tasted just like a samusa. Highly recommend this vegetarian lunch option. Also, the chili lamb tossed in the wok with onion, rice wine, and thai basil was a lovely entree. It came with a side of ginger salad and coconut rice. Their holiday menu is interesting and there is quite a lot to experience from it. Nice ambience, location and the staff is cordial. The staff are extremely polite and attentive. The ambiance of the restaurant is clean and thoughtful, with a few cultural pieces and warm colors throughout. Offerings: - Tea Leaf Salad: 10/10, no notes. Okay, some notes for those who have not had one... it is the perfect balance of flavors and textures. Crispy lettuce with crunchy roasted spices, and a savory unctuous fish sauce based dressing. And the fermented tea leaves just provide the perfect texture, flavor, herbaceous addition. I cannot get enough. - Eggplant Red Curry with Chicken: This was a good dish, all the elements were fresh. I felt like the curry could have been a bit bolder, but perhaps I'm used to Indian or Thai curries. - Garlic noodles with Shrimp: again, a basic dish at its core. The red sauce served on the side was the star here. It provided a tangy pop of additional flavor that I was looking for. - Iced Burmese Milk Tea: I really liked this. 3.5 stars but am feeling generous and rounding up to 4. My friend and I decided to hand an early dinner/drinks at Burma Superstar on New Year's Eve. I made a reservation on Open Table and we were seated immediately. We were told, and I was aware because this was mentioned on OT, that reservations were limited to 90 mins because of the holiday. Not a big deal as we wanted an early dinner to avoid the crowds and chaos that comes with being out late on NYE. We started off with drinks - I had a cocktail with lychee, lime, and dragonfruit and friend had a nonalcoholic mango mocktail. Unfortunately I forget the name but it was pretty and tasty. Almost too pretty to drink, lol! For our entrees, I had the mango tofu and she had the spicy & crispy chicken. We each got an order of coconut rice. The mango tofu was one of the few dishes they said they can't adjust the heat when I asked for mild. My spice tolerance has been growing so I can now handle medium spice. Waiter said the spice ranged from medium to high. At first I was able to handle the spice, especially with the coconut rice. About halfway through the spiciness kicked up and was too spicy for me to handle. Sometimes (like tonight!) I crave spice but then regret it later. However, I was a bit surprised they couldn't adjust the spice. For comparison, Burma 2 in Walnut Creek's mango tofu CAN be customized to mild spice. If B2 can do it, I fail to see why BS can't. Although I didn't try it as I'm pescatarian, my friend said the outside of her chicken was spicy too. As for the service, our waiter was friendly and made good recommendations. However, we waited a LONG time for the check. Having said that, I don't think the delay was his fault and more the restaurant getting busier due to NYE. Splitting the checks and paying by card is easy. Prices are a bit higher compared to Burma 2. Verdict (for future CA trips): -Would come back for sure for drinks, especially during happy hour -wouldn't order the mango tofu but would order other dishes that are/can be made with mild spice. -coconut rice is a great side! Still love this place. We showed up with a party of six and something went wrong with our reservation. The gentleman at the front of house did everything he could to accommodate us and we were seated in less than five minutes with a pretty packed house. The cocktails tend toward the sweeter side but there are a bunch to choose from. We ordered a bit of everything and it was all really good. The pork belly with mustard greens was a little light on the greens but the pork was perfection and the spice was just right. The other thing to call out is how quickly and piping hot the dishes were delivered to the table. Items are family style, if you wish, and we all got to take a little something home to remember the experience by so the portion sizes are not small. We love the B Star restaurants in The City and have been to the Oakland location once before. We love the food at this restaurant and that we always find something new when we visit. They always have plenty of options for our pescatarian lifestyle. Parking is sometimes an issue here with no designated lot and only street parking. Service was good and food is always very good. My group and I ordered a large variety of items to try. Of course the tea leaf salad. It was okay! Not as good as other tea leaf salads I've had, but maybe because I had this one w vegan sauce. The platha dip was yummy, satisfying little flat breads. We also had this mung bean tofu? Which was a super smooth texture, and slightly sweet. Didn't hate it, didn't love it. For mains, I tried the sesame tofu, which was bad. The sauce was okay, and the proportion of batter fry and tofu was v off. And the tofu itself was firm and dry. All the other mains I had were really good tho. I tried the pork curry and the ginger pork belly which were both delicious. I really enjoyed their coconut rice as well. It's on the sweet side which is interesting, but it was so addicting to eat. Overall, some things were a big hit for me. Big flavors that weren't too heavy. But some others were a miss. All I said was just make it a little bit sweeter and he made it on point with some loving love. When I ordered it the second time, I literally told the bartender that I would like him to make it because it was fantastic. We ordered the fried calamari as an appetizer and honestly, I was a little bit taken back because many of the pieces were just dough. I even had to break a few of them apart just to make sure I was not crazy! But let me tell you it was still delicious and that sauce that it came when was on point and fire! We ordered the garlic noodles and man let me tell you those were on point. I ordered mine with tofu and my friend ordered hers with chicken and let me tell you great. My partner ordered the fried chicken and it was interesting because the batter that they use is a mixture of flour and cornstarch. That's what makes them so fluffy and delicious . It came topped with a little bit of saffron and it just looked like a beautiful plate. Another thing that bugged me was the charge for just rice. THE BLACK AND WHITE: We came here around 7pm on a Wednesday night and it was popping. Fortunately the wait for walk-ins wasn't too terrible. I had a great time at Burma Superstar! My friend and I went on a Tuesday night, and we sat by the bar. The place was pretty packed, and the lighting is pretty dim. We had servers checking in on us often, and asked for their suggestions when we placed our orders. The food came out soon after, and they were all very good! We got their Tea Leaf Salad, which is what they are known for. Personally, it is not my favorite. I think the fermented tea leaves are too strong for my taste, but I like how generous they are with the toppings. Super crunchy salad. However, the Burmese Samusas were delicious! They were packed with potato, and the sauce that accompanied it pairs so well. I think the outer wrapper was a little thick, but overall this dish is very hearty and warm. As for the entrees, we got the Fiery Tofu with Lamb, and Fried Chili Catfish. The lamb was really good, it was not too gamey and the tofu was tender. This dish was saucy, and they gave us a bowl of Coconut Rice on the house to pair! The rice was so good, and matches well. The fried catfish was also not my favorite, I felt like there wasn't enough fish meat and had to pick out a lot of bones. This dish was also on the drier end as there was no sauce. My only thing against Burma Superstar was how expensive everything was though. The total bill ended up being over $100, and so this is not a budget friendly place. But for the quality of food and experience, I would recommend to check out this restaurant for a nice date night. read more

LOVE the food here. Definitely on the pricey side, but it feels upscale inside and they also have heated outdoor seating for those with pets. Plenty of vegetarian options. We tried the Shan Noodle with tofu. At first I was hesitant to about the pickled greens, but it all tasted delicious and balanced. They brought it out plated beautifully, with each ingredient separated, and then the waiter mixed it up for us. Forgot to snap a pic before he mixed it up! We also tried the string beans which had a great crunch to them. We were lucky to get free street parking, but it's very busy and parallel parking skills are a must. Funny enough I was looking for a different restaurant and I came across this spot and I'm so glad I did! Right off the bat, we were quickly seated, greeted and given water while we looked over the menu. The staff was really kind and informative. I happen to have asked one staff member what his bracelet was made out of he wasn't sure and when he came back, he found out for me, which was so unexpected and so funny and sweet. The food was absolutely incredible. We ordered fully vegetarian and you would never have missed the meat anyway. We had the vegetarian fried rice, the sesame, tofu, plain garlic noodles, and the string beans a very basic but strong combo they all paired really well with each other and was a very delicious meal. The string beans gave a really wonderful kick and with the fried rice added so much depth to the flavors. The garlic noodles are a classic staple, but with the sesame tofu, we got a really great savory flavor with a touch of sweetness, and I really loved that the tofu fried and a nice crispy way I love tofu, but I noticed that it has a tendency to be prepared a little too soggy so this had a great texture to it! The bartender and our server were both delightful and took great care of us. They gave us great recommendations. Unfortunately they don't do reservations for small parties but you can join the waitlist online. There is seating outdoors, indoors, and a decent amount of bar seating. Service is always friendly! Super helpful that I could put our name on the waitlist online. Drove for 30 minutes, arrived, and our table was ready. Staff was fantastic and our waiter, in particular, was super helpful to help curate the menu which was full of new flavors and combinations we were unfamiliar with. The tea leaf salad, of course is, outstanding. The salt and pepper shrimp was mediocre, tiny shrimp in too much batter for my taste. The chicken with mint dish would have been better described as chicken with cumin. It was fantastic, but the mint was indiscernible. The Burmese lamb curry was phenomenal! We also had the eggplant that was solid. I have another favorite Burmese spot in San Francisco. But Burma Superstar does more dishes well than my favorite restaurant. My team and I ordered Burma Superstar for takeout, and it was one of our tastiest team dinners to-date! We ordered the tea salad, sautéed garlic eggplant, sesame tofu, and garlic noodles. While the tea leaf salad is best experienced in the restaurant - the servers do an excellent job tossing all of the ingredients at the table - we tried our best to toss the salad ourselves without everything flying all over the place. The tea salad is always a standout dish, as is the sautéed garlic eggplant that melts in the mouth. The sesame tofu was decent, although it could have benefited with more sauce. The garlic noodles were solid, but next time, we'd probably stick with jasmine rice as our side dish. The portions were on the smaller side; although we ordered one dish per person, we could have benefitted from two more dishes to share. "Excellent Burmese food on Telegraph Ave, little bit pricey" Came here as a party of 3 for lunch on a Friday right around noon. The interior was open-air on one side and a bit dark, but since it was a beautiful day, we opted for the outdoor covered area in front of the restaurant. We were sat very quickly, but the place was already hopping. We decided to share dishes and ordered the mango shrimp, eggplant with garlic sauce, and the wok-tossed broccoli. And a side of coconut rice to eat the other dishes with (and cut the heat if anything was spicy). I had the sparking lemonade & fresh ginger, and my daughter had a yogurt/ mango drink. Every dish was excellent. I really liked the mango "matchstick" pieces that came with the shrimp-- the full dish was super tasty. And I appreciated that the shrimp was already fully peeled (why doesn't every place do this???). The eggplant was absolutely delicious-- it was Japanese eggplant slices cooked to perfection and flavored just right. The broccoli was also really good, also adding the needed "green vegetable" to the meal. And the coconut rice went well with all dishes. I will add that I absolutely loved the sparkling lemonade with ginger-- felt super refreshing on a warm day. My daughter really liked her drink as well. Service was spot on-- super friendly with big smiles, great information on all questions asked, checking on us and refilling water as needed, and promptly letting us pay when we were done. To be clear, this is not a cheap place-- most entrees are in the $17-30 range, and the portions are good but not "big"... one dish alone may not leave you full if you came in hungry and have a big appetite. But the quality was very high, which made me more inclined. I cannot say enough good things about our experience at Burma Superstar. My nephew and I were running late and arrived around 2:20 PM--after the kitchen had technically closed. Instead of turning us away, the staff graciously seated us and welcomed us with genuine warmth and kindness. That level of hospitality is rare and deeply appreciated. Our server, Hameed, was absolutely wonderful--so patient, attentive, and gracious even though we arrived at such an inconvenient time. He made us feel completely welcome and never rushed us. The food, as always, was extraordinary. The Tea Leaf Salad and Samosas were exquisite--bright, complex, and perfectly balanced. This was my nephew's first time trying Burmese cuisine and he was completely blown away. For our mains, I had the Shredded Mint Chicken, which was fragrant, fresh, and packed with flavor. My nephew ordered the Chili Lamb, and he loved every bite--rich, savory, and beautifully spiced. It was one of those meals where every dish delights, and you leave already thinking about what you'll order next time. Burma Superstar has long been one of my favorite restaurants in Oakland, and experiences like this are exactly why. Burma Superstar has been on my must-try list for a while and they did not disappoint! (aside from the priciness...) We ordered the Platha & Dip, Laphet Thoke (Tea Leaf Salad), Pork Belly with Mustard Greens, and a side of Coconut Rice. To start, the Platha & Dip was pretty scrumptious but the serving was smaller than we wished for at $17. Next, there was the star of the show, the Tea Leaf Salad. The flavors were flavoring and the freshness was freshing. The flavor combination bursts in your mouth - the nutty flavors and acidic crunches mesh perfectly. Finally, there was the Pork Belly with Mustard Greens with Coconut Rice. Again, amazing flavors of spicy, sour, sweet, and savory. I enjoyed the dish but I wouldn't recommend it if you do not like spicy pickled flavors. Also, the dish did not come with rice. We ordered a separate side of rice for $4. Amazing service and cute interior too. Overall, good food but pricier. I know that Tea Leaf Salad will cross my mind from time to time. I'd likely come back but sparingly... because my bank account cannot afford regularly eating here. If you live in the area, I'd definitely recommend checking at Burma Superstar at least once! read more

I joined the Yelp Waitlist at my home and by the time I got to the restaurant I was seated within 5min! I ate here on a Sunday night ~7:30pm with my boyfriend who was visiting. I highly recommend checking the wait times on yelp before going. There are metered street parking options available but it was a little challenging to find parking. There were a lot of indoor and outdoor seating options. The outdoor seating option is well-lit, covered by an overhead awning, and has some heat lamps. I sat indoors this time and the interior is cozy and lively. To start, I of course had to get the iconic tea leaf salad! The salad is mixed table side. This was my favorite part of the meal because the salad has lots of different crunchy textural elements like the peanuts and other seeds. It had a nice balance of acidity, spiciness, and refreshing flavors. We also got garlic noodles with chicken, pork curry with potatoes, and garlic rice. The garlic noodles were ok I felt that the noodles were overcooked and mushy. The garlic taste came through and the chicken was moist. The pork curry was another noteworthy dish because the pork was super tender and soft. The coconut rice was very tasty with the pork curry and it gave the curry a lift so it wasn't super heavy to eat. The coconut rice by itself had a mild coconut milk flavor. Throughout the meal, the service was friendly and prompt at taking orders/refilling water. Overall, I think that this place is a good spot for Burmese food. The highlight was definitely the tea leaf salad. The food came out promptly and the service was good. read more

Food was amazing! First time eating Burmese food and loved everything. The ginger lemonade was refreshing and tasty. The spicy noodles were so good. I chose shrimp for the protein but they also had tofu and other proteins. We sat in the bar because it had seating but we got excellent service. The restaurant is small but super cute inside. When we left, the waiting area was packed. The only downside is the parking. Parking is tricky around that area and we drove around in circles many times until we found a spot. Food was very delightful. My family went here to celebrate my Uncle's birthday. The burmese chicken and the chicken curry were seasoned very well. Palate felt colorful and some dishes were customized due to one our members having a peanut allergy. Service was great although you can tell how busy this place gets because we had to move to make way for another table. All in all, a great experience of authentic Burmese food.
