The people are so warm and have had some of the same chefs for the last 30 years and family managed in the last three decades as well. Have been coming to Battambang for nearly 2 decades now and one of our favorite Cambodian eats in the East Bay. We slowed down on eating in since Covid, but their takeout is still easy and consistently as delicious as eating in. It's impossible to pick our favorites here as there are too many. Practically every menu item is a hit and well executed. From appetizers to soups to salads to grilled options to stir fries to noods and rice. Even desserts here are the bomb! Our go to faves include the grilled pork, Smokey eggplant with ground pork and prawn, and any of their soups. The crab fried rice is also spectacular! I will say that you may want to up the spice levels when ordering as I fear they may cater more to a somewhat spice averse clientele. So don't be afraid to ask for "Cambodian or Lao spicy" when ordering if you want some heat. Portions are easily shareable and make it easy to mix and match so everyone gets to taste a selection. And don't sleep on the dessert, in particular the mango and sticky rice. Inside is warm and comfortable space and a bit of an oasis from downtown Broadway in Oakland. And the owners/hosts are always friendly and welcoming. My favorite Oakland Cambodian eats are either Battambang or Cambodian Street Food, and their vibes are very different... so it's great to have these choices for when you want something fast and "street style" or sit-down and a bit more refined. Cozy Cambodian spot located in Oakland Chinatown. Warm and friendly staff with fragrant and unique menu items. I don't often come by many Cambodian restaurants, so I was excited to flip through the menu and try some new items. We ordered the Tamarind Eggplant, Pan Fried Catfish, and the Battambong Noodles. All dishes had ingredients I was familiar with, but slight flavor differences to what I usually eat. The Battambong Noodles are reminiscent of a pad thai without the bean sprouts; peanutty with a savory and slightly acidic sauce. Very good texture on the noodles. The eggplant was soft in texture and mixed nicely with the rice, and the tamarind sauce gave it a nice acidic punch. I really enjoyed the catfish and thought it was cooked well. I have been meaning to try this mysterious restaurant on Broadway for years and I finally did! And so glad I did! Everything we tried here was delicious! The eggplant and the noodles were standouts. I didn't realize I needed Cambodian food in my life but I truly do! We came on a Friday night, walked in for a table of three, and it was easy to grab a seat. The Cambodian auntie (maybe the owner or manager?) was taking care of us and was so so friendly and lovable lol. The restaurant has a cozy, calm atmosphere, with Cambodian artwork and decor throughout that really enhance the dining experience. I may be biased, but this is the closest I've found to truly authentic Cambodian food that isn't homemade. During my visit, my party ordered fresh imperial rolls, sweet and sour soup, deep-fried salted shrimp, and sweet iced tea with half-and-half. The deep-fried salted shrimp was my favorite. The batter and seasoning are incredible. I've never had anything like it before and it's definitely one of their standout dishes. The sweet ice tea with half-and-half is also a must-try, with a unique flavor I haven't found anywhere else. The sweet and sour soup was another highlight, perfectly balancing tangy and sweet flavors. All of the staff are pleasant, but Aunty Vee truly stands out. She's outgoing, friendly, and adds so much to the overall experience. Great customer service always leaves a lasting impression. It's within walking distance from my work and the Trorb Trung Kor - Grilled* Baked Eggplant with shrimp and ground pork, stays as a top 5 item to crave during lunch. Restaurant staff is always friendly and able to deliver within 10-15 minutes from ordering, which is always appreciated since our lunches are short. They have kept their décor minimal with simplicity, cleanliness, and brightly lit indirect lighting set up. They have also managed to keep their prices grounded (like a good Costco $1.50) making their value unparalleled despite the CPI adjustments and increases of the price of ingredients in the recent year. It came with a small salad greens and sliced cucumber. The crepe was slightly crispy and delicious. Price: $10.95, excluding tax. My sisters had the grilled pork and eggplant dishes. I can only guess those two dishes were on point. They enjoyed them and had some leftover. Service was prompt and I did not wait long for my scrumptious appetizer. The waiter brought out the menu twice, as I needed to know the name and description of the tasty appetizer. Ambiance: casual and comfy. Nice artwork on the wall. Cozy spot for a somewhat underrepresented cuisine. I've been a couple of times. Once, I went with a group where one guy in the group was proudly a former regular. The owner recognized him and everything, and I was super impressed. But then he put in his "regular" order, and it was a basic chicken yellow curry, and he didn't share, and I was less impressed. It was pretty empty around noon when we arrived, and a couple more parties trickled in later, but overall it was fairly quiet. They offer lunch specials Monday to Friday, 11-3 pm, which come with rice and a soup. We shared a couple of items: #29 slarb muan baouk (stuffed chicken wing) for $12.95 #94 amok trei (steamed catfish custard) for $18.95 #7 kari sach ko (beef curry) on lunch menu special for $16.95 We started off with the complimentary soup for the lunch special, which was flavorful and light. It comes with plenty of tofu and veggies, so I appreciated the healthy start to the meal. The stuffed chicken wings were really good. They take out the bone from the wing and stuff it with ground pork and bean thread, among other things. It's definitely a very unique way to eat chicken wings! The beef curry was pretty standard. It comes with beef and a good amount of veggies in a red curry sauce, which we asked to be mild. What was really interesting was the amok trei. According to the description, the dish consists of thinly sliced catfish in a coconut lemongrass egg custard, steamed in a banana leaf. I wasn't sure what to expect from it, but the catfish meat was very tender and flavorful. The texture was mushy, which was unexpected. The lemongrass flavor really comes through in the dish. Would definitely recommend for others to try as it's very unique. It's a smaller portion too, so it's a good complement to heartier dishes like curry or noodles. Lunch special is M-F from 11AM-3PM and comes with soup and rice. I ordered the troub trung kor (smoked eggplant) for $16.95. For a lunch special, the amount of food you get is a steal. I ended up taking about half of the plate home as leftovers. But the dish was basically a mixture of smoked eggplant and pork, topped with shrimp, on a bed of rice. A bite of everything combined was sooo good. Seasoned well and brought together by the lime sauce. It can be a little oily as a heads up. For me, it just made the dish even more flavorful. I never really go for eggplant dishes but this honestly changed my mind. It seems like a fairly small, cozy restaurant. Staff was friendly and offered suggestions for lunch items. For my office lunch, someone suggested we grab Battambang. I am so glad she did and that I got the privilege to experience their Troub Trung Kor, which was recommended by the staff person I spoke to when making my order. IT WAS SO DELICIOUS. My mind may have been blown. I don't know if I've had anything like it before. It is sweet, savory, fishy, tangy, and perfect. The person on the phone said the food would be ready in 10 minutes. We walked over and the food was all ready and we were warmly greeted. My Coworker said that the inside has looked the same, and it was such a pleasant escape from Broadway. I absolutely love Battambang it was love at first bite! This is one of those hidden gem that's a staple in Oakland Chinatown. We decided to share the following items so we wouldn't have leftovers: Sampler Appetizer Platter - If you can't choose which appetizer you get, this is the platter for you!
