Great customer service paired with homey Thai flavors! I came here on a Saturday night with a friend who recommended we try this spot. It was around 8 PM, and it wasn't busy at all, so we were able to get a table right away. The restaurant itself is mid-sized for the city, with enough seating to accommodate a few large parties as well as plenty of smaller groups. During our visit, we shared three dishes: the Thai coconut hot cakes from their specials menu (which they highly recommended), the beef salad for some protein, and the drunken noodles. The Thai coconut hot cakes were warm, gooey, and filled with coconut milk. I really enjoyed the contrast between the crispy bottoms of the cakes and the chunks of pumpkin and corn throughout. The beef salad and drunken noodles were both good, but I will say they didn't necessarily stand out compared to similar dishes I've had at other Thai restaurants. We ordered the Northern Thai Tea Leaf Salad, Panang Beef, Pad Prig Khing with beef, Thai Style Fried Rice, and Chicken Pad Thai. The food was pretty good. The Thai Tea Leaf salad was more saucy than the Burmese style, but still good. I thought our waitress was going to mix the salad for us, as she started to use the forks to mix, but then she was just checking to see if the tomatoes were in there, and then walked away. The chicken pad Thai was good. Pad Prig Khing is beef and string beans sautéed with hot chili paste. You can substitute the protein option. It was really good. Panang Beef is chunks of beef cooked in a curry sauce with coconut milk and Thai basil. It was served with a side of plain broccoli. We liked the Thai Style Fried Rice because of the duck and pineapple, which we selected. The duck pieces were a little fatty, but duck is fatty in general. Overall, we had a good lunch at Marnee Thai. Just a note - the price of the Pad Prig Khing was higher on the bill than what was listed on the menu. The food tasted really good, maybe even better than my usual, King of Thai Noodles. The soup has decent amount of shrimp and is medium spicy, maybe just too spicy for my stomach. Similar to their curry, certain curry only comes in medium and hot, they can't make it "mild", so be careful when ordering. I really like their shrimp rolls , petite and heavy in shrimps, fried not too deep but enough for a crisp taste. Next time, I will try their Thai fried rice and dessert Roti. Ambiance: Dimmed lights, moderate to loud diners but has a homey feel. Food: Been dining here for years and don't recall a dish missing the mark. Chicken satay - Generous size of chicken and grilled so perfectly-- their peanut sauce does lack a bit of depth but it does the job. Imperial rolls - Usually a favorite as it has a variety of meat and is crispy on the outside. Red curry with chicken - GENEROUS amount of chicken in here. Pretty spicy and goes very well with some rice. Flavor is soooo good. Pad kee mao - Very fragrant and delicious. Oily but that makes the dish not dry!! I found this spot in Irving when I was staying in SF for a month while working nearby. They were generous and kind even though I was a single diner. I eventually brought my significant other here, and now it's our favorite Thai spot in the city for the atmosphere, food, and warmth of the staff. We absolutely love the angel tofu/angel chicken wings, the Thai tea, and all of the desserts! All the curries are good as well. Certainly worth trying if you're in the area, and the Golden Gate Park is nearby to walk off the calories afterwards too. read more

Interestingly enough and much to my surprise, San Francisco is not really known for their Siamese/Thai food. In fact, when I go onto the Yelp app and search for an above average Thai restaurant in the city, very few places actually show up. Reason being is simply because this city is heavily saturated with some amazing Dim Sum, Japanese, Vietnamese, and dozens upon dozens of award-winning Chinese restaurants. However, paying a visit to "Marnee Thai" just might change my perspective of how amazing this place was. Located in the Inner Sunset neighborhood of San Francisco, this restaurant is situated directly on Irving St. and tucked in between 23rd & 24th Ave while only being a couple blocks away from Golden Gate Park. This is actually their original location as they also have a 2nd location (also in the Inner Sunset) that is on 9th Ave and close to Lincoln Way. Parking can be a challenge with the vast amount of businesses and boutiques surrounding this area. My lady and I came during the evening of Friday 11/29/2024 at around 5:25pm. The hours of operation are Wednesday through Monday from 11:30am-8:30pm while being closed on Tuesday. As soon as my lady and I walked in, it was very warm, cozy, and inviting. The interior layout showcases a distinctive A-frame roof design complete with wood paneling throughout. In fact, this place has a very strong Thailand presence to it as the artwork and walls looked as if we were dining out in Bangkok and not San Francisco. And even though we came during dinnertime on a Friday evening, there was no wait as we were seated by the hostess immediately. Since I already knew what I wanted, I settled with their "Pad Kee Mao"; this consisted of roasted duck, wide rice noodles, chili, garlic, tomatoes, and string beans. My lady went with the "Pad Se-Ew" which is one of the more popular Thai dishes; she chose chicken as her protein of choice. Her dish had a blend of pan-fried wide rice noodles, soy beans, broccoli, and scrambled eggs. And as a trademark of every Thai restaurant I visit, I went with their "Thai Iced Tea". Both of our meals arrived in around 8 minutes; very quick turnaround time. And best of all, our dishes were piping hot. I absolutely loved the seasoned, tender, and flavorful bits of my roasted duck as they were very generous with the meat portion. Since I do not like spicy, they were able to make it with a more milder chili flavor. It hit the spot in every way possible. All of the ingredient with the wide noodles had the perfect balance of sweet and salty. I also tried some of her Pad Se-Ew and that too was top notch. Even my Thai iced tea had the perfect amount of tea without being overbearingly sweet. Again, the service and quality of food was excellent while not being too expensive. This used to be one of my go to Thai restaurants for years. I was craving Thai food recently and decided to come back here since it's a familiar spot but unfortunately, I was so disappointed! We came in as a party of two for lunch. It wasn't busy at all, just us and three other small tables (groups of 3 or 4). We stuck to our usual orders: Pad Kee Mao with beef and Thai Fried Rice with duck. BEEF PAD KEE MAO I'm not sure what happened here or if they changed the recipe, but what we ate was NOT Pad Kee Mao. Pad Kee Mao usually has that signature "wok" flavor, packed with soy sauce, fish sauce, garlic, Thai chilies, and a strong hit of basil. What we got tasted more like Pad Thai which I am not a fan of. It had a ketchup-tamarind flavor, with barely any basil at all. They also used jalapeños instead of Thai chilies, which changed the whole spice profile. The dish even looked different. It was a bright orange color I've never seen before. I asked the server (the one with short hair) if this was the correct dish, and she just said yes and walked away. The only positive was the generous portion of beef they gave. DUCK THAI FRIED RICE We've definitely had better fried rice here before. This time, it lacked that rich, fragrant flavor and was pretty bland unless you added the tableside sauce (a fish sauce blend with tons of garlic and Thai chilies). We paid extra for duck, but only got three decent pieces of meat & the rest were tiny crumbs mixed into the rice. Overall, we felt totally played for these two dishes. So glad to see they still serve full house dinners at night even after COVID and with all the food deliveries that happen. We tried a few new dishes they had on their specials menu, Coconut hotcakes. I think the gooey coconut on top with cantaloupe, taro, and coconut chunks were really good. it came out sizzling plate with 6 mini cakes and the waitress served 2 for each of us to start. I couldn't tell what the bottom was made of but something of a cakey and starchy consistency. Another standout dish that we ordered for the first time - Seabass with the garlic and black pepper sauce (on side). The best the best! but not meant for delivery moments i think. This is good for dining in while served fresh. Asked the sauce on the side and it ended up being mixed into all the other dishes we ordered. Ended up bringing it home because it was so good! We were are lands End and all the walking around lunch time and the cool weather got us hungry. Some of the options we had saved were about 30 mins and away and so we started searching on yelp (of course) for the closest place to eat. Now finding a place for a vegetarian and chicken meat eater is a dance. First find a place, then comb teh menu and if it satisfies the basic check then confirm with the partner. The great lord Rama decided that we should eat Thai food and led us to Marnee Thai. First time in the Irving area, it is quite a revelation that this is chinatown also, where the real and hard working asian folks live. We arrive here, parking is a bit of a challenge but hey this is San Francisco. My wife was hungry and so went in early to order the apps. By the time I arrive the quintessential Thai tea is at the table. The samosa and papaya salad arrive. Both fresh and perfect to eat. Then on a whim I order the seasonal dish which is really a variation of an Indian dish but nevertheless great to eat. Then we order the pad prak chicken and teh seasonal vegetable and banana in green curry. Both dishes were great and refreshingly good. Service was discreet and fast. Basa Filet Spicy Mushroom Curry: A lightly fried basa filet smothered in a coconut-based curry sauce and packed with plenty of Shanghai tips. This was a fantastic dish. Vegetable Pad Kee Mao: The sauce was more sweet and tangy than expected, and not quite like other Pad Kee Mao dishes (no heat). Although we were happy with the amount of vegetables, the dish was underwhelming based on the taste and the noodles sticking together. Tried lunch at Marnee Thai on Irving based on a friend's recommendation and Yelp's four star rating. Ordered fresh, summer spring rolls with sauce. and a seasonal banana blossom Tom Kha soup coupled with Pad Thai. The springs rolls and sauce were nice and tasty. The soup had hard bits of lemongrass stalks and other unidentified bits scattered throughout the soup creating an annoying experience. I realize the lemongrass stalks are used for flavoring but could have been strained out before serving a customer. The Pad Thai entree was good with the shrimp not over cooked and the rice noodles were not overly sticky. I don't think the experience was memorable and definitely would not take friends for lunch or dinner. I had read that the owners were not Asian but do not think that is true. The wait staff and other employees were all Asian. The restaurant had a Gilligan Island feel to it and I would not go there if it's cold outside. There no insulation in the pitched ceiling due to the construction and San Francisco has many cold days and nights. I enjoy a cozy experience with cold restaurants being a deal breaker unless it's warm outside. read more

I have been wanting to try out this place for a long time and I'm glad I finally got to. I came here with a friend for a late lunch on a Sunday and there was no wait. The service is fast and very friendly. They check up on you several times during your meal to make sure you're doing okay. The corn cakes is a must to get! The sizzling presentation is an experience of itself. If you like coconut milk this is the dish for you. There are bits of taro and corn in it. The roti here is very delicious. It's flaky and buttery. The curry sauce is very runny and the cucumber that accompanies it is light and refreshing. The duck salad was really good and refreshing because of the mint. The amount of duck was amazing and I am grateful that they did not skimp. The chicken pad se ew is my go to when I go to Thai restaurants. I was disappointed with this one. The consistency of the noodles seemed to be over cooked. It was also a lil salty, but still edible. The har mok is the special. Only available on the weekends. It is a fish dish that is wrapped in banana leaves. It was yummy and I advise for you to get it with steamed rice to seep in the sauce, otherwise it would be too salty on its own. Pretty lean team but we felt we got just the right amount of attention. Overall a favorite spot for Thai food in SF both the 9th and the Irving location are great. If you want solid dependably good Thai this is the spot. Give them a try, the specials and curries are particularly good, don't skip the morning glory if you see it on the specials. read more
