    (Top) Negi-Tan Bento ($19.75) w/ Grilled Saba (+$1) & (Bottom) Deluxe Bento ($19.75)
    Evonne C.

[Food] Takeout - Deluxe Bento ($19.75): Got this with agedashi tofu which was alright; a bit on the bland side. Out of the 4 skewers, the chicken wing was my favorite followed by the pork belly. - Negi Tan Bento ($19.75): Got this with grilled Saba (+$1) which was good. I prefer this bento over the deluxe but not just because I am a fan of beef tongue but overall it wasn't as dry as the other meats. [Overall] - Everything was ok, but does tastes like they pre-cooked these then left them in a warmer since all the meat were on the drier side. If these were cooked fresh then they might've overcooked them. The rice could've used more sauce since there's not enough meat to be portioned with the large amount of rice. I'm also never picky with salad but I noticed their salad wasn't very fresh as a few leaves were super withered looking. I picked the yuzu citrus dressing for both bentos but it just tasted like oil. Even after mixing it, the yuzu citrus seems a bit too subtle. - I would rate this more of a 3.5 but unfortunately since I don't think I'd go back I didn't bump it up to 4 stars.

This is my go to place for Japanese skewers bento. I have visited numerous times but often forget to give them a 5 stars for their food. Their prices is at the right price point and cheaper than dining out at a Japanese restaurant because its self served. The only thing I dislike are the stools in the dining area. I think it's on purpose as they don't want you to dine in for a long time and it's a bit easier to clean. They lack hot drinks which I think would complement bento very well w hot green tea. I have visited their other dine in Sumiya in Sunnyvale and the bento quality is comparable. Overall I would recommend coming here if you want to get quality Japanese skewers bento. I have also gotten their take outs many times as well. Still good for take outs. This is my first time having their ramen and overall quality was better than expected. Very rich soup base. Love it!

Small amount of broth for paitan ramen. Salt bomb.

Swing and a miss on this one. Ordered the paitan ramen and got 1.25 cup of broth. It was a giant salt bomb, my taste buds are sizzling from the salt. I couldn't even eat it. Can't comment on service or ambiance as this was a GrubHub delivery. Maybe stick to the bento's?

I wonder if there's any relation of this establishment with the one in Los Altos. FOOD// - ordered negi-tan (beef tongue) and combo B: beef tongue was the best (great flavor, great chew) but overcooked; combo B was just flavorless skewers of meat... perhaps they forgot salt? - I added an additional +$1 for the salmon appetizer and it was cold as a rock... I expected torching to cause a lukewarm temperature which makes me concerned that these torched slices of salmon is just left sitting in the refrigerator for hours (and I was very afraid to try this dish due to reading reviews here of food poisoning... I am happy to report, I did not have any symptoms!) - agedashi tofu was flavorless even with the sauce but nicely fried AMBIENCE// - workers taking their lunch break - lots of 2 people groups just chowing and conversing - appreciate the number of seating and how it is not so very tightly squished together - modern and clean decor SERVICE// - Lots of to go orders - If you do not know what you want right away, you are practically ignored and have to call the person over to take the order (this happened to us). - you presumably pick up your own food at the counter after your number is called (your number is given on a receipt), the individual taking orders assisted us, I do not know if this is the norm (because I had a medical device with me) or not as we went during the lunch rush but there were only 2 other groups (one in the middle of eating and one that just arrived and ordered; therefore no idea how they obtained their food)... however, super appreciative for the help! - service is nonexistent: you have to bring your trays to the trash, separate food waste with recyclables, and place the empty "cleaned" trays on the rack OVERALL// - Kitchen is filled with Hispanics... what happened to authenticity :( Will I be back? Unlikely, but it was a good try!

salmon don and agedashi tofu with miso soup and salad

Decent food options! I got the salmon don with agedashi tofu and the salmon with ikura (salmon roe) and rice is pretty yummy, I'd recommend. It comes with a salad where you can pick different dressings, I got the yuzu dressing but at least with the salmon don, it was a bit of a weird combo lol. Agedashi tofu was okay, not as flavorful as some I've tried. My boyfriend likes to get the chicken skewers, which I tried with the mayonnaise dip and it was really good too! It comes with rice and a salad too, and overall is plenty of food, neither of us finished the rice. I've gotten the ramen here before and I didn't love it, but maybe I'll give it another try. Seating is plentiful whenever we come too and service is pretty fast, you go to pick up your food at the counter and when you're done you put the tray and dishes on the rack next to the counter. Overall a decent place!

Negi-tan bento with chicken karaage and soboro rice
    Yuki K.

The plaza is a bit crowded even on a weekday noon due to all the other stores around but I was able to find parking in the corners. Ordered on ChowNow and pickup was smooth. The two pieces of chicken karaage (appetizer) still retained their lightly crispy texture even after almost 30 minutes. Salmon tataki (appetizer) consists of 2-3 pieces of sliced salmon cooked to medium on a small bed of something like slightly sweetened radish. The other meats on the skewers are all tender and refreshing. Would definitely recommend the negi-tan (beef tongue with special green onion sauce). The soboro rice is mostly just plain rice with some crumbled egg and ground meat but the takikomi rice with mushrooms, carrots, and some other unidentified vegetables was full of flavor, albeit a little oily. Ume miso and shiitake mushroom salad dressings were both delicious - highly concentrated and umami!

Food is always amazing here, especially the sides! Service is also superb! worth every penny!

I ordered the salmon and ikura don (Samon & Ikura Don). I got 5 pieces of salmon that I can finish in a bite. I am so baffled... Does my shock come because I'm a fat American or something? This is my first order from Sumiya Bento. I haven't tried their skewers. This has soured my experience, I'm never coming back. This meal should come with a warning: You will be hungry, plan accordingly.

Ok $20 for 3 skewer meal maybe seems a lot on paper but wow, I thought with the amount of rice provided and salad and even small appetizer (I chose 2 piece chicken karaage) it was actually filling. The best part is almost all pieces were perfect. The beef was tender, meatball was flavorful, chicken wings perfectly seasoned with salt. Pork is slightly tough due to inclusion of tendon - just need to cut smaller pieces. Karaage was so deliciously fried and included yummy kewpie mayo. Even salad dressing was amazing (I chose ume-miso). It was just the right amount of saltiness with a hint of sweetness from the sour plum. They have a few other salad dressings to choose from I would love to try next time like the yuzu one. The meal was ready in 20 minutes for takeout after ordering online. What a satisfying find for me - new yakitori place!

We found this little bento place in the plaza and decided to try it out. We got Bento A and C. A skewer had all chicken (thighs, wings, and breast). And C skewer had pork belly, chicken wings, and chicken balls. Each bento box came with rice, an appetizer and salads. There were a few options for sauce too. Ordering was at the counter and food was ready in 10min. The food portion was pretty generous. Chicken skewers were super tender and nicely seasoned. The pork belly was the only one that was not tender, so I'd not recommend it. Overall it was a well balanced meal with carbs, proteins, and veggies. It was a great place for a quick lunch/dinner.

A quick bento stop: set up is almost like a chipotle where you line up on the side, order at the counter and pick up. I like how there are varieties of selection to mix-match. I ordered the chicken skewers set A with eggplant and Soboro rice. They are all very good. Eggplant is tender and well marinated. I love the okra and wished they offer okra as an appetizer or a la carte.

    B Bento + Ontama + Tofu

Surprisingly I loved the bento! I am not a big meat eater and have been to their original restaurant. This bento spin off shop was a genius idea. The beef, chicken, and pork skewer were all perfect. I absolutely do not like dried or flavorless meat-- Sumiya Bento's skewers were delicious and cooked to perfection The agadashi tofu was not soggy, delicious, and I appreciate they put the dashi on the side. The Ontama egg was cooked perfectly Will definitely be coming back with the family!

Bento Negi-Buta w/ Soboro Rice, Agedashi Tofu, and Yuzu Citrus dressing
    Trung N.

Sumiya Bento is a little offshoot from its bigger Sumiya and Gaku origins, and it can be viewed sort of like a Sumiya Express. Sumiya Bento focuses on a condensed menu that offers the best and popular items that you would want in the area without the need to drive all the way to Santa Clara. I've tried out a good portion of the offerings here, with the Bento Deluxe being a standard favorite. Otherwise, I venture around with other combos if I'm not as hungry. Customizable in different rice options, salad dressing, and a side that allows many different flavor combinations to keep things interesting. Each side is delicately prepared by the friendly staff and the casual dining room complements the meal. The Yuzu citrus dressing is my personal favorite that adds an amazing bright and fresh flavor to the side salad. Especially complementary if you decide on getting skewers that are a little more on the heavier side. Also, miso soup is complementary if you dine-in. Great value and delicious food.

It is in the general area with Cere Tea and Koi Palace. We arrived around 6PM and were seated immediately. We came for the seafood don and both got the UME with an addition of the ochazuke set. For $26 + 4.5 for the set, I think it's really worth the price and you get a good amount of fresh fish. Each bite felt like I was transported to Japan and eating a Kaisendon. Strike 2 only restaurant I have been to in my life when I asked for a hot water they charge. Hot tea is understandable, but charging for hot water is wild. Strike 3 was we ordered the treasure box and 3 out of the 4 sushi items were not fresh and ended up only eating the salmon and left the rest. Didn't bother taking pictures of it, but the teriyaki chicken was also burnt and not seasoned good at all and barely edible. If you want garlic edamame or hand rolls or basic rolls those options are actually better than average for the most part. I advise to stay away from sashimi options as it is below standards.

I feel like I could have had a better experience, since it seems I went on an off day. FOOD: Fish Katsu (3/5) - First off, I felt that the oil used to fry the katsu was old. I had a strange filmy aftertaste with each bite. I kept dipping the katsu in the different sauces to mask the aftertaste but I stopped eating because I couldn't ignore it anymore. The fish used in fish katsu is cod, I felt like the waitress thought I was dumb for asking that question, even though it's not clarified on the menu. Sorry for asking... :/ It's normal for katsu places in Japan to have huge piles of cabbage so I wasn't surprised. The cabbage added a relief from all the fried fish I was eating. Miso soup was standard with nice big chunks of tofu; the rice was fluffy and light. Chicken Curry Katsu (3/5) - Chicken was juicy and plentiful, but honestly the curry had no taste. It added a that gravy like texture but didn't have that deep, rich curry flavor we think of when it comes to Japanese katsu. Usually at these spots you're asked how spicy you want the curry to be but here it's all mild, with no option to add your own spice. VIBE: Interior is simplistic, almost a little cramped. The tray that the food comes out on takes up the whole table space so don't expect to put anything on the table. It's very loud inside. Hard to have conversations. Also strict no outdoor food/drink policy. We were satisfied with the portions and, and didn't leave hungry, but still desired more from Katsu Gin. I'd love to give this place another try if I'm in the area.

Actually the first time that I've ever seen it happen. I got to try the baked salmon, snow crab (with lemon aioli), spicy tuna poke with krab salad (imitation crab), and the fried purple yam fries. Everything else was sadly impossible to consume later on. LOVED the spicy salmon poke onigiri and my boyfriend did too. Had a good kick and is everything you'd want out of a regular poke bowl but in a smaller portion. Good stuff. I really liked the snow crab too, not too fish and went great with the tangy and creamy lemon aioli. Rich, indulgent taste. Purple yam fries were a nice treat to snack on and wasn't too dry or oily. The baked salmon onigiri was standard and fine.
