love this place !! been a great place for years !!! great location great staff and great food !!

This restaurant used to be a great downtown institution . On 12/3, it was a disaster from start to finish . A surly waitress took a drink order. Fifteen minutes later , a bartender delivered the drinks. Then a young man , Ryan, told us he would take our order .The famous Camembert cheese was barely warm and not freshly made . Our orders of chicken paprika were delivered almost immediately after we were served the cheese . Lukewarm mash potatoes , ok red cabbage and positively vile boiled chicken with a sauce that was flavorless. When we told the waiter , this was not the usual preparation , he said : "we have 300 reservations tonight " and shrugged his shoulders and walked away . So , poor service , poor quality food . The old Fort is long gone !! , read more

This place is just off the charts amazing. Went here for dinner after a dance conference my daughter had at Sheraton in Springfield. In addition to the pictured item we also had the Bavarian giant pretzel and a fried cheese as and appetizer. The girls both ordered schnitzel one Jager the other Viener. We had a few desserts. Food was amazing. I would quicker go here at about 45 mile drive than the one that's less 10 minutes from my house. I hope my kid has another conference up there just as a great excuse to read more

It's decent, but not something you would remember and think "I would love to come back to". Maybe I am spoiled by what I think is the most delicious and authentic German place in the Catskills, but this one just did not do it for me. The appetizers platter with the giant pretzel and other goodies was good. The main courses, however, were so-so. The chicken schnitzel was thicker than normal, and the breading on it was very light, it was not crisp enough. I had stuffed shrimp and did not taste any crabmeat in the stuffing. The shrimps were also pretty small, and some of them looked green (?). Basically, 90% of my dish was mashed potatoes with the stuffing which tasted like fried flour. The cocktails were very good. read more

Service is excellent. Not the value for the money or quality of the food. Went for lunch. Friend had bratwurst - one link and buttered noodles for $17. I had paprika schnitzel - one tough piece of veal the size of a piece of bread and buttered noodles for $17. This place does not live up to the hype. read more

I was so excited to stop and grab a bite to eat at this place. The ambiance is great and the dining room looks just as great. Even the food was pretty good. The service is where it all took a turn. Everything started off great with Jeff and we're excited to have him as our server. He checked up on us once after we got our meal and never returned again. We finished our drinks and water and wanted refills and we never saw him again. We finished out food and still nothing. We were parched and still hoping for water. It wasn't until I got up to walk towards the bar that he stopped me from across the room saying that he could take my cups. At that point I mentioned that we've been waiting for refills for a while. Upon his return he passively aggressively slammed the glasses on the table and said "I was waiting for you to finish your food to give you refills." Who does that?! Not to mention that everyone else in the dining room was getting service but us. Not coming back and if anyone asks for a recommendation, this review is what I would say. read more

it's very good German food. Comfortable and friendly setting. I wish the prices were a bit more reasonable, but it won't stop us from coming. read more

Food is amazing and delicious drinks were good will return soon. Service is top notch

Delicious food and we left full. Brats and goulash outstanding. Wish rouladen was offered, but wasn't on the menu. Wife is a vegetarian and she had ample choices, and she loved the Pilzmitspatze: Brussels sprouts, shrooms and spatzle. Quaint, if somewhat dated dining ambience. Only qualm was the Muzak in the dining room: piped in Muzak. Would have loved some German ooom-pa to enhance the ambience. Waitress was very good. Free valet parking is a nice touch. Was packed on a Saturday. Barroom looks like fun. Live singing doing oldies (Gordon Lightfoot, James Taylor). Will return. read more

My favorite restaurant in the world. Been coming here for for over 10 years and it is so consistently good. Kaiser schnitzel with a fried egg is the go to. I go out of my way to stop here. read more

For an authentic German restaurant, this place does a great job. Located downtown, just a few blocks from a hotel I was staying at, I decided to give it a try. I got the Jäger Schnitzel and was quite happy. With a side of spätzle and sauerkraut, the whole dish was great. The beer selection puts it over the top for me. There are certainly a few locals that call this bar home, but I like to see that in a place. Enjoy your meal or drink(s) here like I did! read more

Last time I was here was maybe 10 years ago and I just remember being underwhelmed. That's not to say the new ownership is the real reason behind everything that's changed but I'm sure it has something to do with it. The decor has not been updated probably 50/60 years but it is charming, just slightly uncomfortable in straight-backed booths. The real reason you come to this place is for two things beer or German food. My husband and I decided to try a different approach to our meal and ordered the Tomahawk for two with spatzel and egg noodles as our sides. While we waited we ordered the pretzel to start which of course was excellent. A real highlight of the evening was the waiter going out of his way to find a particular whiskey my husband asked about when we were initially told they were out of it. Truly good service is hard to find and I was very pleasantly surprised. Now to the star of our meal: the steak. We asked for medium rare but keep in mind it's such a large piece of meat it's very difficult to get an even temperature throughout which we understand, and even so I feel they were very successful at getting it as close to medium rare throughout as possible. Tender and flavorful we were very pleased with the results. The sides are an excellent compliment to the meat. Certainly looking forward to getting back here before the next 10 years is up! read more

My husband and I have been eating lunch at The Student Prince for many, many years and have always enjoyed the meals until we ate there on March 7, 2020. We came with a good friend and noticed that the lunch menu had been revised since our last visit. The menu is definitely more oriented toward American style food and is no longer to our liking. We were very disappointed that the portions were only 1/2 the size of the ones we previously received. We used to bring the leftovers home to enjoy, but not any more! As they say, good things never stay the same. Note: We emailed the above comments to the manager on March 8 2020 and never received the courtesy of a reply. read more

Spent a few days in Springfield with my mom and began yelping places to take her out for her birthday. German food is always a great option and this place definitely should not be missed. We started with the fried Camembert cheese and a bratwurst. The cheese was not overly fried and not greasy, making a perfect starter. The bratwurst was one of the best sausages I have ever had. The meat was perfectly seasoned and juicy! Mom had the pork shank (delicious) and I had the jager schnitzel. Both were fantastic. Having been to Germany and having multiple dinners there, this restaurant is truly authentic and is just as good as anything I have had in Frankfurt. The decor is great and the waitstaff was incredible. Can't wait to return. read more

I just went to the Student Prince for the fifth time in the past year, and I will definitely be back many more times to come! This restaurant is a gem, and such a great asset to Springfield. I love seeing all of the authentic decor as well as the amazing collection of beer steins around the dinning rooms and bar. I'm a big beer guy, and always find something great on tap here. For this specific dinner we came here before a Springfield Thunderbirds hockey game, and had an excellent meal. The giant pretzel is outstanding and a must have with one of the many excellent beer choices. Dylan, our server was very knowledgeable about all parts of the menu and was great throughout our meal. I ordered the knockwurst plate with the Brussel sprouts and spaetzle and everything was excellent. Definitely some of the best Brussel sprouts I've ever had, and of course the knockwurst was great too. My wife got the chicken schnitzle, my father in-law got the cod and my mother-in law ordered the sauerbraten. All of these dishes were outstanding as well, and none of us had to get any additional snacks at the hockey game. The Student Prince is a must-visit if you're in the Springfield area and are a fan of good German food and beer. Springfield is working hard to reinvent itself and attract people to the downtown, and this restaurant is hopefully going to be here for years to come. Can't wait to come back! read more

Found this place while traveling. All of the 5 star reviews are justified. They have the entire side street next to the building blocked off with tents and tables. Good social distancing between the tables. We went early (5:30) and glad we did as the place filled up quickly. Food was excellent and portions huge. the $21 - $24 dinner entrees gave you a full meal to take home in addition to the one you ate in the restaurant. Service was spot on. Recommend very highly and will stop again the next time I happen to travel in the area. Dan - Massapequa NY read more

Great food from appetizers to dessert, great German beer selection, great waitstaff, great atmosphere. It is downtown, so parking can sometimes be a little tricky, but they sometimes have valet service, so I've only ever had trouble finding a nearby spot once. I don't have any specific recommendations, because I've never ordered anything I didn't really like. It really is all good. Just try to get in towards the beginning of dinner service rather than the end, because they have run out of the more popular items many times I've gone there. It's a great choice for special occasions or large events if you're looking for someplace to host a larger gathering. read more

Its already the new year, but should you ever get the opportunity to try the Student Prince's holiday eggnog, you will experience a transcendent beverage that will have you transcending off your chair in no time at all. That being said, the Student Prince is one of the oldest and finest restaurants in Springfield and as such I make it a point to visit whenever I am in town. Pretty much everything on the menu is great. Last time we had jumbo shrimp cocktails, potato pancakes, brussels sprouts, and of course the fried cheese (pro tip: if it comes in a triangle or square you know its the good stuff). All of it was superb and a step above most other places downtown and in the surrounding areas. It is hard to try to capture an institution in a review, so you're better off just visiting yourself if you ever have the chance. It is well worth the time (and possible wait)! read more

Awful. Ordered the sauerbraten for lunch. The meat was so tough I couldn't eat it. Forced down a few bites. Large portion. One piece I tasted was cold so most likely was leftover. Within 24 hours I was sick. I will never go back. This restaurant was one of my favorites years ago, but boy has it changed. I wouldn't have fed that meat to my dog. read more

This would be 4 or 5 stars but for the Jaeger schnitzel. Unfortunately it's not a fried and breaded schnitzel with mushroom sauce like most German places. Instead, it's an unbreaded cutlet that is just cooked in the sauce. Flavor was good, but definitely not what I was expecting. On the plus side, they were very accommodating for the Gluten Free members of the group so we will be back, just not for the jaeger schnitzel. read more

I go here every single time I'm in Springfield. I absolutely love it! Everything on the menu is delicious, and then they have a Game Month? That's so cool! Their cocktail shrimps are HUGE and the short rib is drool-worthy (as is everything I've had there) Highly recommend the cucumber salad and sauerkraut sides as well. The atmosphere is so comfortable, and the staff is great. Shout out to Patrick! The Chauvenet is a really fun finish to a meal as well. read more

There is no better restaurant in the entire world. I know, I'm biased. I've been eating here my entire life. There are more memories packed into this place than you could imagine. And the great thing is, every occasion is memorable. The staff is second to none, the food is creative/traditional German, and these days continental, the bar is THE place to be and the pours are always generous (wink wink and-a-thank you!). I'm hoping heaven is like The Fort, and I'm hoping I get there. read more

High priced. We were rushed to make room for another group. Food was not very hot ... probably sat for delivery for a while.

I've been here before and it rocked my world, but oh man, tonight was NOT their night. We came in a party of 4 and it was pretty slow. Our server began the night on a great note - got us our drinks and apps (oysters and a pretzel) fast enough. We put in our main order and it went downhill from there. When the dishes came out, they were coming out one at a time and the sides were all over. One of us asked another member at our table, who has worked for years in the restaurant industry, why the dishes were coming out one at a time. We were talking about how much food there was when our server came over and said "well we are not octopuses, you know." Maybe she intended to be funny, but she was not smiling and the four of us were a little shocked! The main part of this chicken shnitzel dish was a pasta called spaetzel and I was really excited to try it! But my dish came out with spinach instead. The chicken itself was really dry and hard to eat. The rest of the dishes were great as usual. Our waitress refilled our tiny water glasses once, and offered to clear plates while people were still eating and then did not thereafter. When we tried to get our bills, we were waving down servers grouped together chatting who made NO move to come over. We got the bill dropped finally and after a long wait whee again we were trying to flag down some talking staff, one of us finally stood up to bring it over to a server. There was an element of carelessness the entire night that I'm not quite sure what happened. I like this place and enjoyed take away from there, but maybe the trick is just to not go in? read more

Another place from my childhood they've ruined. When there for brunch recently w/ my family it was terrible. They keep the mimosas is coming to help you forget about the food. If you just want a drink no problem this place is fine. But do yourself a favor don't go here hungry! read more

The male bartender was quite rude to my travel companion who is disabled and hard of hearing. We were so insulted we left before dinner.

If you enjoy so so food, served cold hours after ordering with extremely poor wait service, this is your place! Ask for the manager, Nancy. There was free valet parking but we were able to find on street parking on the next street. We had reservations for 6:15 last night and seated shortly therafter. The atmosphere was nice. There was live entertainment and the restaurant had a good feel. We ordered drinks and simple apps shortly after being seated. The drinks arrived about 15 minutes later. After sometime our waiter Dylan mentioned the apps should be out shortly as he saw the onion rings were up. About 20 minutes later (an hour after being ordered) food arrived. Two of the three "hot" apps were cold. Have you every had onion rings 35 minutes after they cooled, if I had even eaten a pile of grease thats what I would compare these too. It then took another 45 minutes for our entrees to arrive about 8:00. They tasted good and were warm. The waiter mentioned the kitchen might be challeged with the new game menu. He offered to send the manager, Nancy to our table after as she had some additional issues to deal with. When she spoke to our table, she never apologized for the delays just blammed the waiter for not entering our entrees until after the apps arrived. She stated she would take care of us and be right back with the bill. About 30 minutes later both the waiter and manager had disappeared. It's closing in on 3 hours (9:15) so I decided to wander the restaurant looking for her. I found her near the kitchen and said she would do it right now. She then tried to avoid the situation by sending the waiter back to us with the bill minus a few apps. The waiter retrieved the manager who then stated the owner had her in the back room discussing our bill for over 30 minutes. Again, never appologizing or taking ownership, just blamming another. Very unlikely an owner would spend 30 minutes discussing $30 worth of food. I would not recommend this restaurant for any evening or celebration dinning. If you'd like a few drinks with some entertainment you could take a chance. Worst dinning experience ever!! read more

this cozy, german restaurant has plenty of dining space and an extensive bar area as well. sad to miss the oktoberfest celebrations, but i had a nice oktoberfest beer to make up for it. had the traditional wiener schnitzel (fried veal cutlet) with pickled red cabbage and spaetzle. the wiener schnitzel was really really good, and largely portioned so i got some to go. i loved the greens and the anchovy on top- really added flavor! the pickled red cabbage was great, but the spaetzle was a bit disappointing... a little greasy like other reviewers mentioned. all in all great experience! can't wait to come back and try the fried camembert cheese and pork belly!! read more

We were driving through Springfield on a road trip and this popped up on a website as a "must do" in Springfield. The interior is set up to replicate a traditional German restaurant with its dark wood paneling and it boasts an enormous collection of beer stains. In the summer the street is closed to vehicles and they use the street as a nice sized outside dining area. Service was friendly and the food came out quick. The menu had traditional German food such as sausages and schnitzel. We ordered the jager schnitzel and the Hungarian goulash, both of which were average in my opinion but which my wife found very tasty. I did not like the sauerkraut - which had bits of sausage cooked in it - but my wife said it was the best she's ever had - it all depends on your tastebuds! The red cabbage was delicious and I really enjoyed the beer wings and the Roquefort mustard dipping sauce. If I was ever in the area again, I'd be open to trying it again to see if I can get this review to four stars. read more
