You don't know what you're missing until it's gone. One of my favorite German joints near me suddenly closed their doors and left our neck of the woods without a proper schnitzel restaurant. After seeing the rave views for Student Prince, I made the 2 hour trek to Springfield to have dinner there. In spite of making a reservation, the only tables the hostess could seat us at were woefully undersized and without tablecloths. This was in spite of other guests having dinner inside the dining room with tablecloths. After being seated in the overflow room that was extremely chilly on account of the air conditioning, you can only feel neglected and treated like second class throughout your stay after long periods with no one checking on you and the other wait staff making you to feel as if you're in the way. Hearing snide "Excuse me!" remarks as they passed by got tiring. It was a bit of a fight to even get the air conditioner shut off so we could have our meal in a warm space. In the end, you ultimately feel like a barely tolerated guest and far from wanted. Our appetizer was a giant pretzel with honey mustard and "beer cheese" with jalapeños. The term "beer cheese" seems to be far too generous a description because the texture and flavor seemed almost exactly like weak queso with no discernible hint of beer. The greatest offender here was the Kaiser Schnitzel. The breading was extremely soggy and not remotely crisp. The meat itself had almost no flavor and was somehow less than tender. I would say the sauce saved it, but the sauce itself wasn't even that rich or flavorful. The spätzle was completely flavorless and could only be edible once dragged through the sauce. Red cabbage was also nothing to write home about. The two hour drive felt was wasted on submediocre food, terrible service and the constant feeling of neglect. And so, my quest for a decent German restaurant in New England continues. read more

This a new one for me. German! Starting it off with a recommended Paulaner Brauerei Oktoberfest Bier (a half liter stein, 250 calories (like I care), Festbier, 6% ABV made in Munich, Bayern. This is the servers choice! Not bad. Not an IPA, but I like it. Tastes like Yuegling. For my appetizer, I am trying the "Our Famous" (flash-fried), crispy Brussels Sprouts with truffle honey and smoked paprika. I asked for them to be barely "flash-fried" since I like them borderline raw. This place is packed! Springfield must have a large German presence. I'm impressed! The food comes out quick! 5 minutes?! More important, it's done right. Next up, from the Raw Bar, (3) locally sourced oysters with cocktail sauce and mignonette. Curious how they put their spin on this. Yep. They are quite yummy. Next up is an "Apple Salad" made with kale, [more] Brussels sprouts, Julienne apples, diced carrots, candied pecans and "local" mozzarella with lemon (that's new) vinaigrette. This is a nice, light salad! I asked for extra kale and light on everything else. This place has a nice bar (which can get a bit loud, but hey, these are Germans!), and mellow music. The oysters comes with oyster crackers and a bottle of Tabasco sauce! Ok. I am beginning to like this place! Live band playing now too! The head (Executive) chef here (Orlando Carasquillo) is actually Puerto Rican and knows his stuff! Next up, the goulash (a soup made with braised beef, potato, onions and pepper in a spicy tomato broth). Of course, I asked for extra spicy! Very good! It also comes with oyster crackers. For my entree, a wurstplatte with bratwurst, knackwurst and boar/cranberry (?) sausage with a mustard/seed paste. This should be interesting! My first ever sausage sampling. For my sides, I am having the cucumber salad and the sweet and sour red cabbage. This is damn good! read more

I come here a lot, it's one of my favorite restaurants, the staff is amazing and so is the food! They also have really great drinks out right now! I love their outdoor dining in the summer, it is beautiful and the atmosphere feels fun and inviting! I'm always welcomed with a smile, and it's a right of passage to go to the fort/ the student prince when you're in Springfield! read more

We drove over an hour and a half just for some good German food. It was so disappointing. The potato pancakes were 4 little overcooked, dry hockey pucks. Very chewy. Then I ordered the Kaiser pork Schnitzel, came out dark grey in color, not golden crispy brown as it should be. Was rubbery not crispy. The red cabbage was OVERPOWERINGLY SOUR!!! The spatzle was delicious. The best thing there was the old fashioned cocktail, that was just delicious. Service was good. Waitress asked why we did not care for our dinner, we gave her feedback. Told her it did not compare to good German restaurant food. She inquired as to what other German rest. We had been to as there is no others around there. We frequently dined at many in the Chicago and Milwaukee German establishments for years, what we were served was not good at all. We will never come back, we are so sad as we miss good German food. We were willing to drive a long way for it. It's not here. Kudos to the bartender though. read more

This restaurant used to be a great downtown institution . On 12/3, it was a disaster from start to finish . A surly waitress took a drink order. Fifteen minutes later , a bartender delivered the drinks. Then a young man , Ryan, told us he would take our order .The famous Camembert cheese was barely warm and not freshly made . Our orders of chicken paprika were delivered almost immediately after we were served the cheese . Lukewarm mash potatoes , ok red cabbage and positively vile boiled chicken with a sauce that was flavorless. When we told the waiter , this was not the usual preparation , he said : "we have 300 reservations tonight " and shrugged his shoulders and walked away . So , poor service , poor quality food . It's decent, but not something you would remember and think "I would love to come back to". Maybe I am spoiled by what I think is the most delicious and authentic German place in the Catskills, but this one just did not do it for me. The appetizers platter with the giant pretzel and other goodies was good. The main courses, however, were so-so. The chicken schnitzel was thicker than normal, and the breading on it was very light, it was not crisp enough. I had stuffed shrimp and did not taste any crabmeat in the stuffing. The shrimps were also pretty small, and some of them looked green (?). Basically, 90% of my dish was mashed potatoes with the stuffing which tasted like fried flour. A group of 9 of us went there tonight for a traditional German meal. What a disappointment. Sample plate of wursts with sourkraut....was not authentic...then I ordered one of this specialties...Geshenkenes plate veal and mushrooms and onions in cream sauce....there was very little veal and it was swimming in cream sauce....nothing I have ever had in Germany. By the way I was just back from a week in Germany and the food did not compare at all. If you are looking for authentic German fare look elsewhere. I was so excited to stop and grab a bite to eat at this place. The ambiance is great and the dining room looks just as great. Even the food was pretty good. The service is where it all took a turn. Everything started off great with Jeff and we're excited to have him as our server. He checked up on us once after we got our meal and never returned again. We finished our drinks and water and wanted refills and we never saw him again. We finished out food and still nothing. We were parched and still hoping for water. It wasn't until I got up to walk towards the bar that he stopped me from across the room saying that he could take my cups. At that point I mentioned that we've been waiting for refills for a while. Upon his return he passively aggressively slammed the glasses on the table and said "I was waiting for you to finish your food to give you refills." Who does that?! Not to mention that everyone else in the dining room was getting service but us. Not coming back and if anyone asks for a recommendation, this review is what I would say. read more

Best restaurant in Massachusetts! The most authentic-feeling German restaurant I've been to outside of Germany. The beer, the pretzels, the Brussel sprouts, the staff, all fantastic! We got stuck in Springfield after a day at Six Flags with no Uber's available in the area. We ate at this restaurant for dinner and the maître d' was kind enough to provide us fresh t-shirts after dinner (since we could not find any nearby stores for pajamas at the late hour of the night). I've been here twice, once for a wedding reception and once with a group for a pre hockey game get together. Both times the food was excellent and the staff was friendly and accommodating. I prefer the Munich Haus over here only because I feel as though it's a little more intimate but that's obviously personal preference. read more

Came over here with my boyfriend when we were in town wandering around for somewhere to eat. The place itself is ok. Gives off kind of a stuffy vibe to me, but everyone was friendly enough. I would definitely recommend dressing up a little if you plan to dine here. We definitely felt under dressed. From the outside, you cant really tell that its less than casual. The food itself was good, but smaller portions and a bit pricey. Large wine menu which was nice. I would recommend going here if you are looking to try some german food. read more

Dinner with the lovely Cheryl on a weekday. Put our name on the waitlist then headed to the bar for drinks. The wait wasn't long (weekday) and seated at our table. Food wise: typical German affair, heavy and hearty. I ordered one of the sausages and the sausage was very good but the mashed potato was too salty. (Minus one star) The potato appetizer was just alright to me but my friends loved it. It does come with two sauce which I enjoyed. Service: very good, attentive and willing to give you samples of beer before you decide on which beer you'd like. Atmosphere: the best. Even on a Thursday evening, it was bustling with people. The bar was basically full. There's a nice jazz group that plays, they are amazing and they just play for fun (and free beer I think), which I think is awesome.... Any place that allows a bartender to consistently, and openly flirt with one customer, while neglecting other customers has an issue. The shirt red head bartender spoke openly with a couple and one other guy about all of their exploits, while ignoring other patrons of the bar, and that girl kept passing everyone else off onto the other bartender. While the place was really nice, and the food was good, this kind of service should be taken care of, and fixed, as it's obvious it's a continual issue. read more

This place is just off the charts amazing. Went here for dinner after a dance conference my daughter had at Sheraton in Springfield. In addition to the pictured item we also had the Bavarian giant pretzel and a fried cheese as and appetizer. The girls both ordered schnitzel one Jager the other Viener. We had a few desserts. Food was amazing. I would quicker go here at about 45 mile drive than the one that's less 10 minutes from my house. I hope my kid has another conference up there just as a great excuse to read more

So there was an announcement that the resteraunt may close. My family has been going there for 35 years. So when I heard that I immediately flew up from Florida for what I thought would be my last meal at this iconic and amazing place in my hometown. It's not home unless I have dinner at the student prince when I come back to Western Mass which is very rare. The meal did not disappoint, the fried cheese app. The Spaten beer the classic German fair is so unbelievably authentic it's like you are eating in a tent at Octoberfest. Of course a resteraunt is only as good as its staff and owner. In this case it makes the experience that much better. I only flew in for the night to have dinner, without hesitation because of the above factors. I grew up on this food every Friday night seeing the owner Rudy and his father Ruppert everytime. So now the good news besides the unbelievable food. You will have a chance to try it again. They found a buyer for the resteraunt and Rudy will still be there. To be honest I actually discussed with my group of investors buying the place because it's that amazing. So September 2 they will reopen and I am already planning my trip. If you don't stop in and you are in western mass then you would be remiss. I already marked my calendar. read more

A Springfield Classic! True authentic German food, prepared with old school excellence. Well trained bartenders. Seniority matters. The pace has slowed down some since the time of the original owner. My grandfather would tell me stories of the masterful table turners at the Fort. Still a bit quirky where if you are sitting at the bar and want to eat, you end up with two tabs. One for beverage and one for food. Decorations and collection of antiques are wonderful. Be sure to take a moment and wander around to take it all in. Christmas is a particularly great time. I'm about to begin residency in Springfield, and today I arrived in search of not only a car and an apartment, but a decent meal. Twenty minutes from starving I asked the leasing agent at the hipster apartment complex where to get something delicious, and I was was told the student prince was a unique local favorite. Wiener schnitzel a la Holstein (sounds right) was top notch, the only thing that I would have added to the plate would have been another fried egg on top. The "baked onion soup," which was French onion soup but HEY this is a German joint, was 9/10, would eat again. The beer selection was European from what I could see at the bar. Their house bock was great. The Student Prince is cozy for being a labyrinth of connected rooms. Apparently back in the day it was divided into the male dominated tavern, and ladies dining area. The restrooms are located as such, kinda funny. I'll be back here for more schnitzel. read more

I haven't been to this place in years and just stopped in for appetizers and it was just great as I remember. The collection of beer steins are amazing and it's worth stopping in just to see them. We had Fried Camembert Cheese, one hot and one cold Vichyssoise soup, Potato Pancakes and Mushroom Caps stuffed with Fiddleheads and parm cheese. All were very very good. Absolutely perfect. The Less-Good - - It's my fault for ordering it, but the Garlic Shrimp, while okay, left much to be desired (5 shrimp for $20? Really?) I should have gone with the veal and the sauerbraten, but that's what I get for panicking while ordering. - It's a crowded place, and hard to move around. If you get into the back room, you're likely better off than if you were in the main room. Last time I was here was maybe 10 years ago and I just remember being underwhelmed. That's not to say the new ownership is the real reason behind everything that's changed but I'm sure it has something to do with it. The decor has not been updated probably 50/60 years but it is charming, just slightly uncomfortable in straight-backed booths. The real reason you come to this place is for two things beer or German food. My husband and I decided to try a different approach to our meal and ordered the Tomahawk for two with spatzel and egg noodles as our sides. While we waited we ordered the pretzel to start which of course was excellent. A real highlight of the evening was the waiter going out of his way to find a particular whiskey my husband asked about when we were initially told they were out of it. Truly good service is hard to find and I was very pleasantly surprised. Now to the star of our meal: the steak. We asked for medium rare but keep in mind it's such a large piece of meat it's very difficult to get an even temperature throughout which we understand, and even so I feel they were very successful at getting it as close to medium rare throughout as possible. Tender and flavorful we were very pleased with the results. The sides are an excellent compliment to the meat. Certainly looking forward to getting back here before the next 10 years is up! read more

Awful. Ordered the sauerbraten for lunch. The meat was so tough I couldn't eat it. Forced down a few bites. Large portion. One piece I tasted was cold so most likely was leftover. Within 24 hours I was sick. I will never go back. This restaurant was one of my favorites years ago, but boy has it changed. I wouldn't have fed that meat to my dog. read more

The Student Prince/Fort Dining Room was recommended to me by a colleague who lives down here in Hartford, CT...so I made the drive up last night for dinner. Totally worth it! Had a very nice steak salad (could have used a bit more steak than what they provided...but it was still good...), with a custom Roquefort/vinaigrette dressing made table side, and a killer jumbo prawn cocktail with some extra horseradish to kick it up three notches...all washed down with two steins of some de-lish Warsteiner Maibock beer, and I was set. Oh, and EXCELLENT service from Janet...she was a treat and made my dinner a real pleasure. Looking forward to coming back later this summer and have some real German dishes (sausages, kraut, etc...) A little hard to find down a small one-way alley (Hertz Neverlost was not much help...) but I eventually found it. read more

My husband and I have been eating lunch at The Student Prince for many, many years and have always enjoyed the meals until we ate there on March 7, 2020. We came with a good friend and noticed that the lunch menu had been revised since our last visit. The menu is definitely more oriented toward American style food and is no longer to our liking. We were very disappointed that the portions were only 1/2 the size of the ones we previously received. We used to bring the leftovers home to enjoy, but not any more!
