Service always great at The Fort. Never better! The food is typical German faire. I've been there many times myself, been there for functions, catered buffets and dinners, and I take family from out of town there whenever I can. I've had the spetzel, the pretzels, fried Camembert, the bratworst/knock wurst platters, the viener schnitzel, game-hunters dinner, and Never a bad meal. The ambiance is also very old-time family style sit down place. It is moderately pricey, but worth it for what it is. The food is cooked to perfection. As some of you may know, I'm a food snob. And when it comes to German restaurants in the US, I'm usually disappointed. Often the meals are "not right", i.e. the veggie or starch does not go with the meat. German food rules (regulations)! At the student prince this is not a problem. Whereas the "non-German" dishes give you a choice of "Beilage", the traditional dishes are set. So, I like the place. The atmosphere is ancient Bavarian hunting lodge. The waitresses wear Dirndl. When I asked our American waitress what type of Pils they had, she gave me an appropriate answer. Jack had Gulaschsuppe and I ordered the cold Vichyssoise. Both were good. For our main course, he chose the pot roast and I the Sauerbraten. It seemed that we both had exactly the same beef, just with different gravies. Whereas my sauce was quite good as restaurant sauces go, the meat had not been marinating for a week. I don't believe it was marinated in vinegar at all. The red cabbage was good. The dumpling was not a potato dumpling but a Semmelknödel (bread dumpling). It had zero flavor. I'd like to try the dinner menu one day. So I'll be back! read more

Came here on a weekend evening for dinner after driving by it a million times and hearing decent things about it from friends. First, the location is great, it is downtown and in a historic building that has retained a lot of it's charm. The inside is beautifully decorated and maintained in both a historic way and in a way that is true to the theme. We ordered beer, how could you not...and specifically a flight, which was quite affordable given what other places charge for flights. We sample a bunch of beers we had not had before and enjoyed this part of our experience as well. Food wise the french onion soup was excellent! My partner, who doesn't like french onion soup, enjoyed it. The brussels sprouts were also AMAZING. I ordered the platter of three sausages and overall the entire meal was quite bland. The spaetzle needed salt, the sausages all needed more flavor/spice. The sauerkraut was perhaps the best part of the dish. I make German food at home on a regular basis, and so maybe I am just biased towards my palate's experiences, but I'd probably return for some beer and the atmosphere with friends, but I'd probably pass on the food. read more

Really spectacular. There's a wide and well curated selection of German and local beers on tap, my beef on weck (see pic) and roasted Brussels sprouts were great (particularly the rye bread with seeds - yum), the servers are friendly and knowledgeable and best is the atmosphere - old school German restaurant with wood paneled walls in part, painted plaster on the other side. In true German style, they have the proper glasses for each beer on tap, most eponymous. Comforting lighting seals the deal. It's clearly been here a long time. It reminds me of the old German restaurants in Chicago, which I'm pretty sure are all gone (feel free to let me know if I'm wrong!). I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch here and recommend it to all y'all. After scanning pictures of food here on Yelp, I was very hyped coming in. I was craving some well done German food going into Oktoberfest season. After getting seated and setup very quickly, the waiter helped walk me through the menu and all their popular items. After I ordered a nice plate of warm bread came out promptly. After a bought of decision making fatigue, I got the veal schnitzel. I couldn't resist the image of a juicy, oily, crispy piece of meat on a chilly day. It was quite pricey though, clocking at $24 for the single dish. I got to choose 2 sides, so I went with this pastaesqe side (can't remember name but waiter recommended it) and pickled cabbage. The schnitzel was fried well, but the meat it self was very tough and tendony. With some bites whole chunks of the schnitzel ripped out and flung all over me and my plate. The pastaesqe side lacked seasoning and butter ladden. The sunnyside up egg was a plus as that was cooked perfectly. The food was decent, but the price didn't justify the quality. First time here and what a failure. Ordered the sauerbraten and so did my friend. Three slices of thick cut meat covered with a thick brown gravy. I came here for dinner while I was spending the night for work in Springfield, and it was a great spot. I like how they order the beers from light to dark on the menu. The food was also excellent. Went to this restaurant with a group of coworkers. We had a reservation for 7 p.m. and were not seated until 8. While I understand Saturdays are busy especially around Christmas, a one-hour wait for the reservation is never acceptable but if you have to wait that long you should at least be comped appetizers Desserts and Drinks. The food was good not great. Service was average not cheery at all. The restaurant itself is very nice inside makes you feel warm and cozy. However after waiting over an hour to be seated when we had a reservation our server you are the manager did not go out of their way whatsoever to acknowledge the outrageous wait time that took for us to sit down. Planned a date day for my hubby and this was where we started. What a cute place! Lots of authentic decor, very spacious. Another perk is they validate parking at the lot on the end of the street. I got a coupon at The Big E for a giant pretzel and it did not disappoint! It really is the size of your head with a side of beer cheese and honey mustard for dipping. It was very good, but pricey at $10 (glad it was free lol). For lunch, I had the wurstplate--Bratwurst | Knackwurst |  Boar & Cranberry Sausage with a side of sauerkraut-- I don't even like sauerkraut but theirs is excellent. The Student Prince is a good place to get authentic German food and drinks. We found the wait staff is super helpful and more than knowledgeable to guide us through the menu, (what's in the meal, how it's prepared, etc.) They have a great and lengthy beer menu and bartenders that will assist with any questions you may have for them about the list. Although it's in the heart of the city, it's located on a quiet side street. I would easily suggest this place for a quiet night out for good food and drinks, that won't break the bank. read more

It was very interesting how I ended up at this place. I was up the night before looking for events to go to on Facebook and this spot came up for Springfield Restaurant Week. Not having eaten German food in a while and I wanting a reason to get out on CT I figured, why not? It was a great experience, my server Leah was great, and what a great restaurant with a lot of character. For my appetizer I ordered Pretzels with cheese sauce. I've had better cheese sauces but the pretzels were very good. The cod for my entree was delicious paired with the butter noodles. I squeezed a lemon on top which made the dish taste extra good. So good in fact that if I didn't add the lemon I don't know if the dish would have tasted the same. The lemon cake I had for dessert was probably one of the best lemon cakes I've ever had (no lie). I was topped with drunken blueberries & raspberries (soaked in Jim Beam) with a whipped cream frosting. The drink I ordered, The Bee Sting, was a great drink with the right amount of sweet and tart. I totally see myself visiting the place again, hopefully the next time to eat actual German food. read more

They have some nice beers and it's great to come in and sit by the bar. Bartenders are very nice and helpful. The food does leave a lot to be desired. We ate here several times and it wasn't the best. One of the sausages I got ( beef) was ground to the consistency of a hot dog. I've had sausages in Germany and in Poland, which are the sausage capitals of the world. I've had pork, chicken, beef, boar, and venison sausages. They are usually nicely smoked, ground yet still retaining bits and pieces of whole meat, spiced heavily with garlic. The ones I had here were finely ground without the proper spices. Usually, in the sausage world, the more finely ground a sausage the worse the quality of the meat (it's easier to hide bad quality meat when you grind it very finely). The sausage I had here said it was house made. I'm not sure if the meat was of questionable quality or if it was an unknowledgeable chef that decided this was acceptable, but judging by the quality of the restaurant, I think it was the chef that didn't know any better. The sausages here are cooked not grilled. Usually sausage would be grilled. I asked for grilled and very well done since I like it charred. I still got it cooked. I told our server. She took it back and I got it slightly grilled after about 20 minutes, at which point my husband was done with his dinner. It was a fail. We've had other instances when we've come here and didn't receive good food (once we ordered the special of the day which was awful) but this time stands out since it seems they pride themselves on the sausages which are just not authentic. You are better off purchasing a sausage from an authentic Polish or German store and grilling it yourself. You will get a true feel for what it's supposed to taste like. read more

We have been coming to this restaurant since the early 90's and are never disappointed. I was so happy to see the Fort reopen after Rudi had sold it. The classic German dishes are just that; classic! You won't go wrong selecting any of them. On our most recent visit we enjoyed the famous fried Camembert cheese, salad with Roquefort dressing, paprika schnitzel with pork and Kaiser schnitzel with pork. We didn't save room for dessert this time, but there's always room for a Chauvinette to wash down a delicious meal. read more

What an experience! My son brought me here after he tried it because he had recently moved to area for a job. We went for an early dinner and decided to share several of the appetizers and smaller plates so we could try different things. We ordered the buttermilk chicken fingers, the crunchy Brussels sprouts, the big soft pretzel ( pictured below, is it big enough for you??) the bratwurst and a side of the red cabbage. This has been on my list for a long time and finally had a chance to go last week when we were passing through Springfield. Our group of 6 started with an appetizer sampler - it was a nice mix and provided something for everyone in the group (crispy brussels sprouts -yum!). For the main course we stuck with traditional German: a wurst platter, some jaeger schnitzel, some wiener schnitzel, pork chop and a paprika schnitzel (with a fried egg, because "why not?"). The sides were all great - spatzle was done just right and the sweet/sour red cabbage was perfect. A couple of us washed it down with draft German beer - it was nice to have such a selection of German on draft. Ther main course portions were all generous, so there wasn't a lot of room for dessert. But we managed to share some Creme Suchard (a sort of mousse with Kirchwasser) and Black Forest cake. What to say.... a Springfield staple with its origins in yesteryear's dining experiences. I am a fan. Dark woods and european charms are ever present especially in the room with the bar where the booths were clearly made in the early and mid 20th century when americans were much smaller LOL. The jäger schnitzel and spätzle are delicious. The gravy-to-meat ratio needs a little fine tuning. Other than that it was great. The beer was flowing. Located in a shady-looking-dark-alleyway... this quite large restaurants entrance is located on the side of a building in the heart of downtown Springfield. They have lots of side street parking and they also have valet. Service: slow.... we walked in and there were two groups in front of us... just standing and waiting bc there was no host/hostess. The restaurant wasn't even full. Confused, the couple in front of us grabbed a passing server and asked to be seated. The server went to the back and the host came out to seat us all. We had a reservation... and the host said there was nothing written. That was weird and I would've probably gotten upset if there was a wait, but luckily, we got seated right away. Our server was very friendly, but also quite slow... overall, wish she could've refilled our drinks and came to check up on us once or twice. Food: heavy heavy heavy but oh so hearty. It was delicious!! We ordered the giant pretzel for appetizer, German sampler, and Hungarian beef with egg noodles and a side of coleslaw. The pretzel was DE.LI.CIOUS. Super soft in the inside but crispy on the outside. The German sampler was super heavy... but loaded with food and was great, but just a tad bit salty. My Hungarian beef with egg noodle...... was amazing. The beef was ultra soft and tender. It was a little salty so I mixed it with the egg noodles and it was so good lol. Tasted like hamburger helper lolol we also got the cheese cake and I mean.. you can't go wrong with it! Overall, delicious!! Highly recommended. Definitely will be back. read more
