I have to thank the hostesses at Theodore's for sending us to Smith's the other night. They helped us skip the 70-minute wait and still dine on the delicious food from Theodore's Booze, Blues, and Barbecue. This was a lifesaver because we were in town for an event at the Mass Mutual Center, and couldn't wait for that long. The staff at both Theodore's and Smith's were incredibly helpful and friendly. We sat at a high top, listened to some retro tunes, drank some wine and dined on incredible barbecue!! We ordered the baby back ribs and cheddar/jalapeño sausage. Both were so flavorful, juicy, and plentiful!! For the sides, my husband and I each ordered the waffle fries and the mac and cheese. The fries were crisp and the mac was creamy, even though it wasn't baked. We enjoyed their barbecue sauces and hot sauce at the table. The food definitely earned an A+. The prices were reasonable too. My husband and I are already trying to find more reasons to go up to Springfield so we can eat there. I love this place as it has more of a Bar & Grill feel instead of a pool hall. Yes, there are many pool (Billiard) tables and a couple of Table Shuffleboard games, but also a bar and a lot of tables, which you can move around depending on the size of your group. The rotating beer taps are awesome, every night I have come here I have had many options to choose from, especially local brewers. The food menu, while limited, is excellent, all the food comes up from Theodore's, which has incredible food, I just wish they had more choices on the menu! I have had the Smoked Wings every time I have been there- they are excellent! Nachos are good as well. The staff are helpful, attentive and friendly, service is quick, food is hot and beer is cold! If I lived here, I would be at Smith's several times a week, but I will just have to make more visits to Springfield! read more

The bartender right next door told us about this place since my friend was looking for bourbon. As soon as they opened at 5pm, we were here and had the place to ourselves. Good, so I don't embarass myself with my lack of pool skills. They have plenty of pool tables, flatscreen TV's and a dart board. I got a Hazelnut Brown Nectar (beer) as he was giving me Pool 101. My first shot was great...only because I was not drunk yet so, learning and focusing was not a problem...but my beer was so good I kept missing my shots and the balls won't go in the hole. I got frustrated, got more beer and moved onto darts. Another game I can play better when sober. The place is in an old building. The women's restroom shows the age of the place and is quite creepy. There's another door inside the restroom and who knows where it leads and what would come out of it...my heart was beating much faster everytime I had to go to the bathroom. The tables are too close to each other so the clowns at the next table are constantly interfering with your shots. Every game is punctuated by one of us getting jabbed in the back with a cue or getting crashed into mid-shot by a drunk idiot. Maybe it's fun for social occasions but not if you actually want to play pool. read more

Monday Night Football in season. Trivia off season. Can't forget the billiards. Over 100 years of tradition, and some of the original fixtures and architecture to prove it. So we were actually seated in Smiths Billiard Hall, but it's managed by Theodore's and they serve the same menu as the restaurant. I was surprised to learn that within 20 minutes of opening, there was already a half hour wait in Theodore's! Thank goodness for Smiths! Anyways, my wife got the BBQ burger with waffle fries. I had a couple of her fries, they were delicious. The burger was half chuck and half steak, she says it was really good. The meal choice was Brisket, and I was not disappointed! The brisket was tender, you hardly have to chew this delicious creation. The taste of the meat itself is mild, but that's what the sauce is for. There's a little bourbon bbq, but that and chipotle bbq and mustard bbq is also provided at the table. Served on a slice of bread, it was fantastic. For sides was a piece of cornbread, honey slaw, and collard greens (which the last was a first for me). Cornbread was sweet, the slaw was a little bland and boring, and the collard greens was actually pretty good (a unique flavor, reminded me of spinach, a little spicy, I'd eat it again). For drinks the wife got what I think was the 'Blue Bayou' which was as delicious as it was dangerous, went down real smooth. I was the DD, and while pondering over the craft beer section was tough, I chose 'Monks Cafe Flemish Sour Ale' which even dark was actually light. It was delicious. Their drink list is great and I wish I could have explored it more! Our server seemed a little overwhelmed, but otherwise she was attentive, polite, and charming. When I ordered the sour ale, she became excited. She was knowledgeable about the beer, where it was crafted, and details of flavor. It was also one of her favorites. She seemed to know the beers inside and out on the beer menu. What I loved about this place was the building. It is a mid to late 19th century structure with intricate molding on the ceiling, the bathroom had the original stalls, urinals, and sinks. There were antique fans still in place, not operational but hearkened back to a different time. I loved this place. I would definitely visit again the next time I'm in Springfield. read more

Smith's is a busy joint. If you're looking to shoot pool there are a lot of tables. The bar area is fairly spacy and there are a lot of TV's. The best part of Smith's (IMO) is the beer selection. It's a point of pride for them to offer finely crafted brews and not the run of the mill. As I made my way up the flight of stairs I'd already decided to put my choice of beer in the bartenders hands. I told him what I usually drank and I asked him to 'dig something up' for me. FYI they don't serve Sam Adams or Newcastle... The Stone IPA he served was perfect for me. A bonus for Smith's is that they serve food from their sister location downstairs. Theodore's offers an awesome (mostly BBQ) menu, definitely worth ordering from. I actually prefer eating upstairs (at Smith's) than downstairs unless I want the restaurant experience. Smith's has some serious history, it's been around for a century. Cool place, check it out. read more

Prices were reasonable as well...at least in comparison to Vegas prices lol. I was happy to see their selection so well stocked :) Plenty of room here to stretch your legs! Not sure if they get much busier at night, but when we arrived, we were the first ones in, and only a small group on the way out. We got a free hour of pool with our receipt from Theodore's downstairs, but we really came up here to drink anyways. A place that gets it, and always has. Spacious, attentive service, great food, they leverage what they have to the max so that you want for nothing. Yea, not every place is blessed with the room, or the staff, or the menu, but when you do great things with what you have, you never want to leave. The service had us drinking full beers before our last one was a quarter gone, the food arrived as advertised and piping hot within minutes, and the space is an adult playland. I hate leaving such a good review in case the place is more packed when I come back, BUT a well run OG spot like this deserves the love. Well done folks. read more

Great beer selection! They have a rotating beer selection and always have some interesting finds. Generally speaking the bartenders are great (there are a couple that aren't the friendliest, but that's OK). They serve food from Theodore's so that's always a win. Pool, shuffleboard and a few other games are upstairs if that's your jam. They also have a handful of TVs if you want to watch a game. They serve food till 1am which is great for those of us working 2nd shift who want a drink and some food after work. It's one of the oldest (if not the oldest) continually operating pool hall in North America. Incredible atmosphere and great vintage feel. it's a big place, so there's lots of room to spread out, kick back and not worry about the goof troop you get on the rest of Worthington. Whenever i'm out with a group, this is the place I come to. The bouncers do a great job of keeping dirtbags out of there and the place never seems unwelcoming. There is always a crowd, but it's never crowded and the beer selection is off the charts. The rectangular window in the front is just freaking cool and there's tons to do in there that doesn't involve pool. It's just a great place. Highly recommended. This place has Brunswick tables, very nice and open, they have shuffle board or whatever it's called, aand the thing is, they have a superb selection of craft brew beer, even true Trappist brewed beer, very fine whiskeys as well as a friendly atmosphere. They offer darts and mellow laid back, primarily quiet place, though people gather here as the long standing Theadore's Blues & BBQ is just below and if you have a meal there and prefer to play pool upstairs at Smiths Billiards, the first hour is free of charge! I like the old school vibe of this pool room. Prices seem to be around 5 bucks per hour for pool, but they also have darts. There are also tables which are seat yourself on the far side of the room if you just want to have a drink and chill. Food is available from Theodores downstairs, but they do bring it up. Jukebox doesn't connect to the internet, but that's fine because it's full of ZZ Top and Van Halen. The history is obvious and yes, the giant window is very cool in the summer. This place is just alright. I've been here numerous times, but my recent trips have been disappointing. They do have a large selection of beer. But. when you ask the bartender any questions about the beer you are looked at like your a simpleton. That is, when you can get their attention. They do serve food but it's from the bar downstairs. The few times my group ordered some appetizers I always noticed they were lukewarm at best. The flavor was what you'd expect from bar food later at night. Good for drunk college kids I imagine. But going here as a destination for food itself would leave you disappointed. The biggest problem with this place is its location. It is located on Worthington St in downtown Springfield. An area that is really known for the shootings and muggings that occur there almost weekly. I never go down that street unless I'm with a big group and it isn't too late at night. A colleague of mine was actually mugged a few months ago after leaving a bar on Worthington St. I don't remember which bar she was at, so I can't say it was this one. Basically, if you like a divey pool hall with mediocre bar food and a super sketchy neighborhood then this is the place for you. If not, I'd suggest Boston Billiards or your own local hang out with a pool table. read more

Sometimes there's a wait for tables on the weekend but they have a ton of tables and it never really takes too long. Plus they serve Theodore's food from downstairs so you can always order something good while you wait.
