Came in on a busy weeknight with a coworker for dinner. Started at the bar, where the bartender was very helpful and did a great job describing the menu, as well as his wine list. They had various wines available by-the-glass which came in either a bottle or were on tap, which I found interested. After a couple of drinks at the bar we moved to our table. Service at the table was just as helpful. The menu is loaded with many options for vegans, pescatarians, and beefeaters alike! I opted for their Bobo Chicken, which was a nice Peruvian style chicken and it came with an amazing green sauce. The chicken was perfectly charred and tender - lots of great flavor there! I started with their Baby Iceberg salad which came with a slice of their thick, smokey Heritage Bacon. The Bleu Cheese and chopped egg on the salad was great and the combo if it with the bacon and lettuce in each bite was incredible! All of the side dishes looked great, the one I chose was their pan fried mashed potatoes - what a great concept! The slight crust was excellent and dipping it in the green sauce that came with the chicken. Save room for dessert... They have an amazing dessert list! I've been here a few times before but last night was one of my all time favorite experiences! We were seated in a booth, and our server was so detail oriented and attentive. We started out with the biscuits which were rich, delicious and came with the creamy cheese spread. We then tried half a dozen grilled oysters, which had the most savory garlic butter on top. My mouth is watering just thinking about them. The two of us also shared a 32 ounce steak and the kitchen was kind enough to cut it up for us so that we could share it better. It basically melted in my mouth - that's how good it was. The cocktails were also good! We had the Floral Julep and Poncha cocktail. I really don't understand the hype. I've been for both dinner and brunch and it's honestly average food at expensive prices and hit or miss service. The biscuits are good but really not worth it to come here for them alone. The steaks are not that great, and if you want good steak, go to one of the many many better places around town. The creamy spinach was good and better than average. Drinks are fine but beware that the beers are essentially half pours (maybe 8 ounces?) The female blond hostess is incredibly rude and flat out lies about tables, which is shocking for this price point. Maybe all the publicity around Steven Starr and his treatment of employees has driven the good ones away (Google it if you're curious but service at his restaurants in DC has noticeably declined). The food was good and as a hunter myself,I really liked the Outdoorsman decor. The service was decent. I had to wait over 10 minutes for the check however the server was knowledgeable about the menu and the background of the restaurant. Wife and had dinner before heading to a concert and both had the butcher steak, acorn squash, and brócoli. We also ordered the biscuits and deviled blue crab eggs (4 pieces). Never had butcher steak before and this was good I ordered mine med-rare and it was cooked perfectly. The biscuits were good wo the pimento cheese and while I tried the cheese and it was ok I didn't need it. My first time eating pimento cheese and tbh not knowing what exactly it is biased my taste buds. The eggs we really good. I could have had another serving. Lastly the bearskin is awesome. Enthusiastic, professional, and very focused. bar: Big selection of wine and plenty of cocktails and beer. My wife drank a Malbec on tap and thought it great ($17 as of 06/2025). I asked for a West Coast IPA, which the bevvy menu lists as a Denizen Southside, but I received their Hazy IPA, the Veil White Ferrari ($16). It's a good beer. food: My wife thought the cheeseburger and fries were good ($25). She asked for the 1000 Island on the side, but it was on the burg. No problem, it's scrapeable. At Eli's suggestion, I had the pit beef and - he's right - it's a great rendition of that Baltimore classic ($21). I asked to sub sweet potatoes for fries, but received fries anyway. Pretty great spot! The neighborhood is a lively area. The ambiance is super rustic, basement vibes as soon as you walk in. Taxidermy, 70s decor, low lighting, and a great view of the cooks in the kitchen. Service was awesome -- super attentive staff and very polite. Entering the restaurant feels like being transported into rustic America. We came in with a reservation for a party of 8 to celebrate a birthday. Our server was very friendly and explained the menu to us very kindly. He always asked if we needed drink refills and made great suggestions! My personal highlights were the buttermilk biscuits and the endive salad. The buttermilk biscuits are large and melt-in-your-mouth buttery and pair so amazingly with the pimento cheese. I loved the endive salad for some greens and its acidic vinaigrette to contrast the rich biscuits and beef. We ended up ordering the largest ax handle ribeye they had that night, and to be frank it was not enough for our party, and was sliced unevenly to share. Perhaps we should've ordered a few different cuts in smaller portions and for more variety! The ax handle was tender & delicious, albeit not the best steak I've had. Our server gave our birthday girl a mint chocolate cheesecake/fudge dessert and thoughtfully split it into 8 pieces for us fo share. I'm not a fan of white chocolate, but the texture was fun! Wowwwwww wow wow, I was NOT expecting St. Anselm to go this crazy my GOODNESS!!! Came here for a buddies birthday and glad we did. Every last thing was outstanding!!! Our waitress told us that the oysters and the Buttermilk Biscuits are a MUST so started with those and let me tell you something....... THESE MIGHT BE THE BEST BISCUITS I EVER DONE HAD!!! I used to say Loveless Cafe in Nashville had the best Biscuits but Anselm might have taken 1st place my WORD!!! So insanely soft and delicious. The oysters were right up there as well shoot, had us ordering another 6 after we tried them. I had to see what this Monster Prawn was talking about and it was a beast for sure but I devoured that thing. Best meal I've had in DC! I decided to go here for my birthday dinner and was blown away by everything. First off the interior is really cool and dimly lit which I loved. All of the waiters and hosts were super nice and welcoming. We were a little cold by the door so they moved us to a spot towards the back of the restaurant. Now the food, OMG. You will be fine in jeans & a tee although some patrons see the word "steakhouse" and head out in their seersucker suit. The food is stellar. The fluffy and flaky biscuits cannot be missed with the pimento cheese. The cuts of meat are large and we shared the perfectly seasoned and sliced pork chop with a horseradish mustard. In town for work, I had to stop at one of my new favorite places in DC for dinner. I arrive early for my reservation (recommended) and take a seat at the bar until my table is ready. I try their Old Fashioned which has a combination of bourbon and rum (interesting). When it comes out it has both a lime and orange wedge which further gives it unique flavor profile. Not bad but I'll stick with my traditional Old Fashion. After a look over the menu I start off with an order of the buttermilk biscuits (a must), then the cucumber salad, followed by the salmon collar and finally the sweet potato pie. The biscuits come out first and are absolutely a beautiful golden brown. I love these biscuits because there a perfect blend of fluffy and flaky. The pimento cheese is a nice add too. If you like biscuits, you have to try there's. The cucumber salad is very colorful and lite. It would make a great summer dish but since the radishes were in season it made it to wintertime. The crunchy granola was a real nice touch, and the whipped feta brought it all together. The salmon collar comes out and it a nice portion size. The fat located in this part of the fish gives it a buttery consistency the melts in your mouth. The only concern is with the bones so be careful not to eat them. So, it takes a little fork work to strip the meat from the bones but well worth the effort. Last up is the sweat potato pie. It is prepared with a gingersnap crust and served with a side of ice cream (I chose vanilla). The actual consistency of the pie is that of cheesecake (not complaining) and was really good. Love... Here goes another love story. I have extremely high expectations and standards when I dine. St.Anselm was nothing short of spectacular. First, even though I've been to the Union Market District hundreds of times, I've never had dinner at St. Anselm. Shame on ME! My perfect significant other planned date night and kept this one a secret. I was excited to find out this was where we were coming because it was bookmarked! Yes, I've been wanting to come, for years. (I know, crazy) Thanks to my Beau, I made it! The wonderful host accommodated us when we encountered a mishap with our reservation. We were seated in minutes. Points for the smooth last minute accommodation. We started off with Monster Prawns, they were fantastic! Now this is a BIG Prawn and there was actually a lot of meat inside! Yummy! We then got crab deviled eggs, they were excellent! Observation; the egg whites were plentiful. Points for that! Good Quality eggs! Superb plating. I got the butchers steak and my Beau got the salmon! He shared. They both exceeded expectations. Brussel sprouts were great. Drinks were awesome!! Food and server were terrific, nothing amiss. Now, although service was great there was no manager presence and if there was, we missed it. I'm big on manager presence. Although this is only rated a 3 ($$$) for price it's not a low end establishment. It's one money sign away from fine dinning territory. It's moderately priced for great food. Kudos to that! With that being said, it would have been nice to have a manager come over and ask how things were. At the very least do a temperature check, let me know you value our presence in your home. We are spending money, you should want us to come back. You should want to make sure every guest, new and old, are happy with the experience. Dining is like dating in D.C. There are so many great restaurants it's hard to commit to just one place. Some can't get a commitment and that is where I am here. I'm not sure I can commit. I mean it's good! As my boyfriend and I were looking into dinner options in the Union Market area of DC ahead of our trip, we were excited to find St. Anselm recommended through Yelp as "good for dates" and "great for happy hour." When they had a reservation available for the Friday night we would be in town visiting a friend, the choice was basically made for us. To start, we ordered some Little Things and Smalls From the Grill to share and some cocktails. We enjoyed the blue crab deviled eggs, Waldorf salad, and oysters! The Walford salad came out first, and I was happy that the portion was substantial enough that it easily split three ways. I enjoyed the interesting texture of the chicken cracklings. Next came the oysters, which went down far too easily. The smoked herb butter was to die for! With a total of 6 oysters, I was glad these also split neatly, and we didn't have to fight over who got an extra oyster. For my cocktail, I ordered the Poncha, which is on brand for me since I will always order the egg white cocktail. It was light and refreshing with the perfect amount of lemony uplift.  It didn't make sense for us to each get our own entree, so we decided to split the Ribeye and the Charred Bobo Chicken. We also shared the grilled broccoli and pan-fried mashed potatoes. The ribeye was perfectly cooked to our medium rare preference, and it melted in my mouth. The chicken was also very good and served with a delicious aji verde sauce. We were very tempted to ask for more of the aji verde sauce so we could put it on everything! This iteration of mashed potatoes is definitely the most interesting I've ever experienced. It was almost like a pot pie the way it formed a crust on the outside and was soft and creamy on the inside. We started with sharing appetizers: cucumber salad and the grilled okra. Both were excellent. The spicy mayo with the grilled okra was really good too. Then we each had the buttermilk biscuits, recommended by our waiter and that came with a pimento cheese spread. Wow. They were excellent!!! For our main course we all shared the 32 oz T-Bone steak, med. rare and ax handle ribeye. OMG was that superb, BOTH cuts of those meats. HEAVEN! Cannot even say enough. The buttermilk biscuits were insanely delicious. The pimento cheese was a great touch to go with them! They were huge biscuits, so we took some to-go. The star of the show was the charred bobo chicken. The meat was very tender and juicy, and the sauce was so good. It was a big portion, as well. I want to have a really good steak before I give up red meat forever. Saint Anselm seemed like a good steakhouse to try. It might've been the chargrilled oysters that tempted me the most. Dining alone, I chose the butchers steak, otherwise known as a hanger steak. And, of course, the oysters. A new spin on an old delicious classic with the oysters. instead of breadcrumbs and Parmesan chhese ( NOLA style) , there was an herbed butter and the oysters are micro grilled for 20 seconds. That made the oysters soft & tasty- hello butter. It needed the breadcrumbs for texture. Next my steak arrived it was perfectly cooked, medium rare. The steak was tender in some spots and tougher in others. I think it was accidentally cut along with the grain instead of across the grain. And there was a good deal of gristle. I'm not gonna lie, I was a little disappointed. That includes my drink, the gold rush, which should've been more like a Bees knees, but was very lemony, and not will balanced. On Sunday, August 17th at around 1:00 PM, my group of eight arrived and was seated. Our server was Anastasia. While she wasn't the most personable, she was doing her job. One member of our group, who can be quite particular, asked if her sandwich could be cooked a bit more. When she expressed this to Anastasia, the server seemed visibly annoyed. Instead of simply bringing the sandwich back to the kitchen for adjustments, Anastasia carried it around to several spots in the restaurant before addressing the request. At that point, we asked to speak with the manager, whom I believe was Candace. She was absolutely wonderful--charming, professional, and attentive. Candace personally stepped in, ensured all of our orders were corrected, and took great care of our group. The buttermilk biscuits were melt-in-your-mouth delicious and the oysters were delectable. The butcher's steak and ribeye were perfectly cooked and the duck pot pie was a yummy unique twist on "the usual." For our side, we had the pan-fried mashed potatoes which was tasty and due to an unexpected error in our fortunate favor, we were served the roasted sweet potato and wild mushrooms on accident. The ambiance here is so cool, the decor takes me back to Teddy Roosevelt era. The food is so good my favorite was the buttermilk biscuits and pimento cheese spread. Since its nestled in an area with lots of other restaurants and shops it's a perfect place to walk around before or after eating here. The inside of the restaurant is dimly lit and creates a nice vibe for a date. Service: We were well attended to at the bar even though it was a pretty busy weekday night. The bartender constantly checked in with us and every time that my drink got low checked in to see if I wanted another and he made some delicious French 75's. Food: So before coming to St.Anselm I'd heard that it was a great restaurant and was recommended by many of friends to check it out. However before arriving I didn't think to look at the menu and didn't realize it was a steakhouse lol. So when I arrived and saw that there was nothing that really caught my attention at the time, I was kicking myself. I ended up going with the Portobello mushroom entree that came with an adobo marinade, lime slaw, pickled onions and ordered a side of fingerling potatoes. Let's just sayyyy I was struggling to eat this and will not be ordering that ever again. I wasn't really a fan of the marinade. All in all, I would only come back to St.Anselm if I knew that I was in the mood for what they're known for and that is their steaks. read more

St. Anselm - Portobello mushroom - Steakhouses Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

I've been to St Anselm a few times over the years and it is a very good restaurant. My favorite items on the menu are the biscuits (four for $15, they can also do a half order), salmon collar ($22), and lamb leg steak ($28). The menu is focused, with standard steakhouse fare like oysters, salad, sides, and beef steaks. The restaurant decor is interesting; there's no other place quite like it in DC. It reminds me a bit of an 1800s hunting lodge, with lots of wood paneling, shutters, curtains, vintage USA memorabilia, and more. The best seats are a couple booths on the side of the restaurant that have full walls on three sides, so they feel very private and cozy. They also have lots of outdoor seating. On my most recent visit, I got the biscuits, salmon collar, and lamb steak, along with a side of brussel sprouts. The biscuits were excellent as usual. The salmon collar was bigger than I remember but just as succulent. It's rich, tender, and fatty. You have to watch out for some bones but it's worth it. It's in the "smalls" section but it could be an entree. The lamb steak was not as good as I remember, mostly in texture -- it was more fatty and sinewy than last time. The brussel sprouts were great. I was skeptical of the walnut caesar dressing, but it was delicious. It was like a caesar salad dressing but with bits of walnut in it, and the flavors worked great together. My companion got the butcher's steak ($35) and it looked fine. All the food together was enough for leftovers. To drink, I had the Gold Rush cocktail ($16) which was nothing to write home about. Then, the Schlenkerla Marzen Rauchbier (smoked beer, $18 for 500 ml bottle) which is a delicious beer that I've had before elsewhere. I was pleasantly surprised to see it on the menu. Service was friendly but very slow. Cocktail and beer prices are higher than they should be, especially since all of the draft beer is $7-$9 but only for a 9oz pour! This is disclosed on the menu but it's not customer friendly. I suspect many people miss this. IMO it's not appropriate to serve beer in anything smaller than 12 oz (standard can size) unless it's a taster, and really all drafts should be a proper pint size (16 oz). read more

Came here for my 30th birthday dinner (was last minute because trip was cancelled) and was so happy to be able to get a table. Our server was welcoming, attentive, and quick. I truly have loved every server i've had here. The food is always top tier and i'm close to have tried everything on their menu! This is what I call my "deathrow meal" - their ribeye, crispy fingerling potatoes, and any of their apps! They were out of their cookies n cream ice cream (which was the driving factor of me wanting to come here, it's out of this world!) but went with a second favorite - their ice cream cake! The ambiance is normally chill, busy, but still able to have a nice conversation but this night there was a loud couple on a first date next to us so it was hard to hear each other. Dinner with Friends on a Friday night. Place was packed, great energy and vibe. Had a great corner booth. Service was excellent. Server knew the menu inside and out and guided us to some great shareable apps. The biscuits were amazing, hot flaky and not too dense. Had the jumbo prawn, and I emphasize Jumbo and the grilled oysters which my wife really enjoyed. Are eyes were bigger than our stomach. we shared a ribeye which was plenty for two. Side dishes were delicious as well. For desert we had the ice cream cake which was a great finish to a great meal. Can't wait to come back. read more
