Can't believe I have not reviewed this place. Easily top 2 or 3 in DC for me. Unfortunately COVID prevents me from enjoying the wonderful lodge easier interior but the staff is doing a great job keeping guests safe. The biscuits are insane. Must get. Not pictured in my photos because #notimeforthat. The deviled eggs were great as well. But let's be real, it's about the steak here. Yeah the monster pawn is great as well, but you come here for the steak IMO. The 55 oz ribeye and the butcher steak are my fave. New York strip was great, but not like the other two. This is one of those tough five stars because usually that means it's among the best restaurants. And I'm not sure the food alone gets it there. This is largely because it's a "steak restaurant" and they miss the mark on those. They are cooked perfectly, with respect to both doneness and seasoning, and the sauces are nice. But the cuts themselves don't match the price well. This is the source of my hesitation for five full stars. Everything else, though? Out of the park. I was a little ashamed spending $10 on collard greens, but damned if they weren't some of the best I've ever had. The mashed potatoes are more like a potato pancake, and are incredibly good. Very tasty layered biscuits with pimento cheese. We had the chocolate cake and ice cream for desert and they were outstanding. Great wine list with some very good cheap glasses and solid cocktails. Service was outstanding. That enviable type where it's so good you don't even notice it until you leave and it occurs to you that you never had to wait for service, but also it didn't feel intrusive. The atmosphere is warm and just flirts with kitschiness. The booths make a great date-night location. Might become a regular here. read more

Let me start by putting this visit into perspective: 4 people eat for $350. That means I'm tipping $70 for a 1 hour meal. We were seated and waited about 5 minutes. Server introduced herself and discussed pouring water at her next visit. 5 more minutes elapse...she pours water. While she is pouring, we ask about ordering drinks. She stops us and is clear: this visit is for pouring water. She tells us she will take our drink order on the next visit to the table. My wife, who used to train servers for high-end dining establishments, laughed and said, "well, she made it abundantly clear that SHE will be deciding what happens and when during this meal. We asked her what she likes from the menu. She ignored the question and just old us what to order. She never told us about her own preferences or even gave recommendations. She just said order this, and this, and this. The ambience of the restaurant was nice. The food was good...solid...but surprisingly not special. We all tried each other dishes and I will say my wife's lamb was the most distinctive item on our table. Is was delicious. People had raved about the biscuits, so I may have had unreasonably high expectations....They were really good but not amazing. Interestingly our food was dropped by a different server. I say "dropped" because she came to the table and put the plates down as quickly and abruptly as she could without speaking. She never looked at us nor spoke. Look, if you are someone who drops 350 for dinner on a regular basis, you might not bat an eye, nor have a complaint about this meal. But for us, when we spend this much, we expect special. Instead we had a very expensive decent meal served by someone who took every opportunity to let us know serving our table was not where she wanted to be. read more

Located right next to Union Market, this is a cool steakhouse with a historic/presidential decor. Lot of old Western bar vibes and they use plates with pictures of US presidents on them. My family had baked oysters, okra, branzino, axe handle rib eye, mushrooms, mashed potatoes, NY cheesecake, and oreo brownie ice cream cake. The oysters were yummy, nice zesty oceany flavor. The okra was also good although I would've liked it more if they were crispy instead of slightly soggy. Also, I felt the sauce was a bit too spicy. We had a 42 oz axe handle ribeye for ~$130. I felt like it was overpriced because 1/3 of it was bone and I can't say it was one of the best steaks I've ever had in terms of flavor. The mashed potatoes and mushrooms were alright, same with the cheesecake. The ice cream cake was a hit...not sure if I've ever seen that on a restaurant menu before so you know I had to have it. Service was excellent. However, the steak didn't live up to the price. The food was good but nothing was unique. read more

Friends and I were looking forward to this - and it did not disappoint! There was tons of heated outdoor seating for COVID, but we sat indoors in the corner away from others. We appreciated the contact info for tracing (if needed) + temperature checks at the door. Indoor patrons were decently distanced with plastic barriers around each booth. The interior was quite beautiful and comfortable. *Note that around 6:30ish on Sat night it did start getting a bit more occupied indoors. I can make a very delicious steak on my own at home, so I don't usually go out for steak. But wow, this place was amazing. New York Strip - very delicious on its own (good size also), but the sauce *made it*. I can't make a steak like this. All of the sides we had were fantastic; it's hard to really recommend just one. Ice cream cake was as decadent as you'd imagine. This is a place you want to make an occasion and shell out for the sides. The ax handle ribeye is the novelty here. We learned that they have a limited supply at any time, and when we were there (around 6pm on a Sat night), the ones remaining were around 55-60oz (good for four total people, but kind of a stretch for three people with so many sides). They could go as small as say 40oz for three people, but it's kind of luck of the draw on if it's in stock. The plan is to return with a fourth person to join us and we get the ax handle ribeye to split between us, expecting something around 60 oz. With of course requesting a side of the fantastic au pauvre sauce. We can't wait to come back! read more

We slid into a cozy booth at St. Anslem and were brought plates with past president's portraits on them. The decor had a colonial, yet country western vibe. Our waiter was very attentive and made our experience an enjoyable one. Now... on to the food! We had the apple, cinnamon and walnut French toast. It was absolutely delicious! I was concerned it would be super sweet, but it wasn't. The apple were a great touch and the French toast has just enough sauce on it that it was enjoyable to eat but not obnoxiously sweet. If you love bugs like I do, you'll love this brunch classic. The hash browns were delicious! They were nice and crispy on the outside. The bacon was pretty fatty. But the flavor was delicious and we were able to cut around the fat to find bites of meat. The crab omelette was today's special. If licking the plate were appropriate, we would've done it! 5 star brunch for sure! read more

Nestled in Union Market - St. Anselm is a gem. I've been a lot since it randomly got recommended to me by an Uber driver. It is very loud inside but still I'd say it's a great date place. When it's warm - the outside seating is lovely. The drinks are always great (Planters Punch - tyvm!) and the staff is attentive but not helicoptering around you. I've never had anything there I hated but some things I'm definitely more keen on than others. The wedge salad is PERFECT. I typically hate a salad that requires work but I will order that one every time. The deviled eggs are astounding and if you like oysters? The smoked ones there are *chef's kiss. They also have a crab leg served with a smoked butter that is so, so good. And like everyone else will tell you - the biscuits with pimento cheese are an actual revelation. Entree-wise (if I manage to get that far!) the salmon collar, the fish and the bobo chicken are all standouts to me. I DO think it's kind of odd at that price point that none of the main entrees come with sides but it hasn't stopped me from going. The potato wedges are my fav and their housemade ranch is great (secretly, I think the wedge salad dressing would also be legit with them too!). The kalettes are very good also. For dessert I always get the carrot cake to go. Perfect for eating in your bed at midnight or for breakfast or whenever the hell you want because you're an adult and rules for eating dessert are for suckers! read more

If you like comfort food this is the place for you. We had the buttermilk biscuits with the pimento cheese. Big, hot flaky biscuits you will love. I liked the pimento cheese but I asked for butter because hot biscuits and butter my thing. The baby iceberg salad is NOT small. Most people will love the large slab of bacon across the top but this was a bit too much for this gal and a little heavy on the dressing. I'd ask for it on the side so you can control how much on your salad. Creamed spinach the best I've ever had! Butchers steak was delicious and melted in my mouth. We took the carrot cake to go because the portions are large. You won't leave this restaurant hungry! Carrot cake had great flavor but I'm not a fan of walnuts in the cake. Our waitress was amazing and took such good care of us. Take my advice, order the Buttermilk Biscuits. They are amazing and worth every single calorie and carb. We also loved the Mushroom Toast, and the guys devoured the Crispy Pig Head (eek!). All of the entrees were expertly prepared, and we thoroughly enjoyed the rustic hunting cabin atmosphere. Easy five stars. We had two individual group reservations (one for four persons, one for two), but the staff at St. Anselm were able to accommodate us at a larger table. During a busy brunch window, this favor was something that could've been easily refused - props to their staff for helping us out. Our group ordered the biscuits and cognac punch (to share) as starters. The biscuits were super rich and buttery, and the savoriness of the pimento cheese spread was a superb complement. The punch is served in this antique glass bowl with an ice block floating in the middle with citrus slices frozen inside. Cool presentation and a refreshing aperitif on a blistering hot day. I had the steak and eggs with a side of their thick cut bacon. The portion was perfect and the quality noticeable. Their hash brown "hockey pucks" are unique (somewhat akin to Mickey D's) and the perfect fried starch to soak up the egg yolk and steak juice. read more

4.5 stars for a fantastic Union Market steakhouse. My friends and I were looking to grab a late bite near Union Market recently. Most of the places inside Union Market were closed, so we decided to walk across the street and give St. Anselm a try. Located on 5th Street (you'll see some fun art as you walk over from Union Market), St. Anselm is a Washingtonian Top 100 restaurant that earns the name. We went inside to see a big, fun and beautiful venue with lots going on. While we didn't have reservations, we were able to snag a seat on the venue's spacious patio. A server came to quickly greet us and tell us a little about the menu. She was very friendly and attentive throughout the meal. We started looking over the menu (and through some Yelp tips and pictures) and found a plethora of good and relatively inexpensive options. Most items on the menu (aside from the famous Ax Handle steak) are priced in the $20s and $30s price range. We decided to get some of the buttermilk biscuits to start, which were wonderful and came with a delicious pimento cheese spread. We then moved on to ordering, and everybody generally seemed to enjoy their items. I ordered the lamb sirloin and salmon collar. While they weren't by favorite versions of lamb or salmon (thus not the full 5 stars), they were still very solid dishes and excellent for the price charges. Overall, St. Anselm provides an excellent and well-priced steakhouse experience. If you are looking to grab a bite while over in the Union Market area, you should definitely give this venue a try. read more

St. Anselm is fantastic! I had a large group of friends at brunch today after running an 8K in downtown DC. We split the biscuits with pimento cheese and monkey bread. The biscuits were phenomenal. Biscuits usually aren't anything special but these were so soft and buttery, and the pimento cheese elevated them. The monkey bread was just average. It was good but if I had to choose a carb, I'd choose the biscuits. My husband and I got the steak and eggs. The steak was tender and flavorful. The crispy potatoes were to die for. Our other friends enjoyed the chocolate chip pancakes, the blue crab deviled eggs, and the plate that came with eggs, sausage, and toast. The cocktails were also amazing. We had mimosas and one with rum that's name escapes me. Overall 15/10 brunch. We'll be back for the biscuits, and we definitely want to try dinner some day soon too. read more

Definitely my favorite steak experience I've been to in DC. It is a nice steakhouse where food is served a la carte but it has a unique twist / vibe. My boyfriend turned down ramen for this place he knew of. I walked in and was in amazement at the cool decor (taxidermy animals above the bar). We sat at the chefs counter, and was immediately greeted by our wonderful server, Keith. We started off with the oysters which were amazing. Probably the best I've had. We also had the blue crab deviled eggs and okra. Both were also good. Finally we enjoyed the butchers steak and lamb leg steak. I REALLY want to give this place 5 stars, but I just can't because the menu doesn't have a single kid friendly protein option. I understand that this is a steakhouse, but when we were there for an early dinner I would say more than 50% of the tables had young kids under 5. Seems like it could be worth throwing all these parents trying to have a nice meal a bone by including a small hamburger patty or chicken breast on the menu. (My kids loved the bacon, but I can't just give them bacon for dinner...) Also worth noting that the staff generally was great with the kiddos. Our only issue was that the kids were getting testy while we were finishing our entrees, so we ordered dessert. It took 45 minutes to get dessert, which obviously made the situation with the kids worse. I was SHOCKED we didn't get our dessert ASAP so they could get us out of the restaurant! read more

Lively, noisy atmosphere which was fine for us but if you're looking for a quiet romantic dinner it might not be for you. I expected DC steakhouse prices and wasn't disappointed. Ribeye was $53, Butchers Cut (think Medium Rare's sliced hanger steak) was $38, lamb steak looked good and was a bargain at $28. For those prices add a scoop of creamed spinach and mashed potatoes- all sides were extra. Also drinks can really run up the price, wife had a classic Margarita (no special tequila)it was $20 - she had two so with tax and tip that's $52 for two drinks. I know everyone has their own financial situation but $850 for a party of six might not make it an every week place. read more

The menu may not jump out as too exciting or new age american boundary pushing enough but the food here is solid. Seemingly simple things like a small plate of okra is devilishly delicious. Salmon collar is perfectly charred outside and supple with fat. I tried rock fish with mussel juices and that combination was delicious too. Try to go with 3, 4 people so you can try more of their dishes. Based on my two visits, some dishes will be classics that can't go wrong and many will delight your senses like they have been prepared and cooked by seasoned chefs who know exactly what they are doing and what they are doing well. read more

TDLR: spent $300 at this place on a Tuesday evening to not even have napkins or silverware nearly the whole dinner. incredibly slow service, no apologies; and barely any recognition. shameful the food was okay but the lack of service for the price of the meal was not worth it at all. -- First off, we were sat on a dirty, unclean or set up table, despite having gone through all the safety requisites. After we were sat, we didn't receive service for at least 20 minutes. All of a sudden, a random person came saying they heard we wanted wine and was visibly upset by the fact that we didn't in fact, want wine and haven't received any service whatsoever. Instead, we ordered 3 shots of tequila. It arrived 15 minutes later without limes, we asked for limes and 4 cokes, and we received the limes again 15 minutes later and without the cokes. We politely reminded the server to bring us the cokes and she replied that the bar is handling it, which confused us since the bar handled the tequila, too. The cokes finally arrived, hot, with the ice melted, and opened without any fizz. Then the food arrived, we didn't have any silverware or any plates. We asked and again, had to wait again to receive basic service like silverware and napkins. The food was again, pretty okay, but the whole experience was awful. When we finally asked for the check, the server left it at the table without a simple 'thank you' for $315. It was awful and im embarrassed to have come here and spent money in the first place. Everyone near me was receiving the same level of service and im surprised that this restaurant is so well rated to begin with. Not only did you lose our business, you lost the opportunity to make even more money because we wanted to enjoy more but getting service was a chore. I wouldn't eat here for free, if it meant coming here again. I also just want to iterate that the entire party who ate there, had backgrounds in the service industry. We worked in the restaurant industry for more th an 5 years, and this is in the top 5 worst dining experiences ever. read more
