A month later and I'm still reminiscing about my experience at Mastros last month. If you didn't visit Mastros DC for Valentines Day dinner, then you missed out. I enjoyed Herb Roasted Branzino with a side of Garlic Truffle Cauliflower. I asked for a mocktail with mint, and Eli executed it perfectly. The only problem with the menu is that there are too many delicious options, and one can only eat so much. Everything worked out perfectly for my Valentine's Day dinner though because I left with a to-go bag of chocolate cheesecake and a separate order of chocolate covered strawberries. Both were delicious even after a couple of days in my fridge because they were already so freshly made. The chocolate cheesecake is out of this world. What makes this cheesecake extra special is the Oreo cookie crumb crust and premium cocoa, espresso, dark chocolate ganache. It also came with plump raspberries. I came to Mastros for a stress-free experience and delicious meal; my expectations were exceeded. Customer service is 5 stars, the food and drinks are 5 stars, and the live music and ambiance are icing on the cake. read more

I'm a Yelp Elite reviewer. I don't write reviews like this lightly. But what happened here deserves to be documented. We walked in at 7:30 PM. We didn't leave until 10:30 PM. Not because we were enjoying ourselves. Because we spent the entire night chasing down our server, Elena. It started early. My friend, a Native American attorney, asked a question about the menu. Elena didn't answer her. She turned to me and asked me to explain the menu item to her. A grown, accomplished woman sitting right in front of her. That's when we realized what was happening. She assumed my friend didn't speak English because she's an older brown woman. That's not a miscommunication. That's a assumption rooted in bias. It set the tone for the entire night. We ordered Wagyu steaks. Expensive ones. Two of us ordered medium rare. One ordered medium well. We received the opposite of everything. No one came to check on us. We had to physically hunt Elena down to flag the problem. Management eventually agreed the steaks were wrong, but only replaced one at first. We had to flag him down again for the second. We told Elena at the start that food and alcohol needed to be on separate checks for business expense purposes. Simple request. She brought one combined bill. Then when she finally separated it, the comped drink that appeared on the first bill was suddenly back on the alcohol check. When we questioned it calmly and asked for the manager, she got an attitude, walked away, and stood with other staff pointing at our table. We asked for the manager twice. He never came. She grabbed my card in a rush without taking the other person's card for the separate alcohol bill. More confusion. More waiting. The food, when cooked correctly, was fine. But no steak is worth three hours of being ignored, talked about by staff, and treated like we were the problem. Elena made it clear from the first interaction that she had already decided what kind of table we were. That's not a service failure. That's a character failure. I'll be calling management tomorrow as well. This needs to be addressed. read more

We went on a Friday night with family and had a reservation for 6pm. It was relatively quiet when we arrived, with most tables still empty, which made for a nice, relaxed atmosphere. Our server, LK, was amazing--attentive, friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the evening. We started with the Blue Point Oysters, which were fresh and flavorful. For my entrée, I had the 8oz Filet Oscar Style, and it was absolutely delicious--cooked to perfection and so tender. We shared garlic mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts on the side, both of which were excellent. To finish off the meal, I had the warm butter cake for dessert, and it was incredible--rich, buttery, and perfectly sweet. I even took some home and can't wait to enjoy the leftovers today! This is my ultimate favorite steakhouse! I will find any reason to keep returning. The staff is efficient, kind, and well knowledgeable about the menu. The bartenders are skilled and the cocktails are great. You can buy a bottle of wine, as well as request cocktails. Went to Mastros for a company party of sorts. It was a lovely evening with a delicious, robust meal. A few things were just a little off but otherwise a great time had by all. We led off with calamari and some other appetizers. I felt like these were the only real areas for improvement. The calamari was fine but lacked flavor on its own. This was the same with the beef carpaccio. They both just needed something more. The shrimp presented in dry ice were the largest I'd seen and flavorful and the cocktail sauce quite good. The accompanying ground horseradish was yummy and potent. The bread assortment was also quite good with the pretzel loads particularly tasty. I also had a wedge salad, which actually wasn't a wedge but it tasted quite good. Especially the blue cheese and bacon. Might have been a bit better with a little blue cheese dressing too. I ordered a filet at 8 oz and medium rare with wagyu butter. I also had the DAOU Cabernet arrive with the steak. We had a variety of sides with mashed potatoes, lobster mashed potatoes - which I'm generally opposed to because it usually lacks lobster. This actually has a good bit of lobster but it felt a little overdone. We also got some asparagus and broccolini. They were fine but ordinary. The steak was perfectly cooked temperature-wise. I usually prefer a ribeye but I wasn't going to tackle a 22 bone-in cut. I wish there was a smaller option. The wagyu butter sadly melted completely on the scalding platter. It tasted great. I wish I had salt later and a fellow diner agreed. We were headed towards full already when the butter cakes arrived with ice cream and whipped cream. The butter cake was delicious and some complimentary chocolate layer cakes were fine for coworkers celebrating milestones. I feel the butter cake was just short of another local steakhouse but it was a close, close race. Service throughout was attentive, quick and professional. It was as one would expect from a classic steakhouse. We also appreciated the live singer/pianist in the bar. I don't think my peers had any complaints. It was a very good evening and dinner. I went to Mastros last night to celebrate a friend's birthday and unfortunately I was left disappointed. We were a party of 9 with a reservation and unfortunately we were not seated until about 20 minutes past our reservation time. We went on a Friday and while I understand the restaurant was quite busy the service was very slow all night. It took a while for them to come take our drink and food orders, and once those orders were placed it took a while for the drink and food to come out. We ordered appetizers, bread baskets and our drinks all at the same time. The drinks came out first but it took such a long time that the waitress's has to come and inform us that the bar was backed up. As a table we ordered about 4-5 appetizers and it took over an hour for them to be delivered. The 3 bread baskets we ordered also arrived after the appetizers, so it was an over hour wait for bread. For my meal I got the pork chop and creamed spinach. I appreciated the waitress informing me that the side dishes were very large and letting us know if someone in our party already ordered a particular side dish so that we would not have too many. While my pork chop was nicely cooked it overall lacked flavor. The creamed spinach was good; however l, I was disappointed with the protein. At the end they brought out a slice of chocolate cake with "happy birthday" written on the plate for my friend which was nice, but she and the rest of my party was disappointed in the overall service from the meal. From waiting an extended time to be seated, and waiting a long time for drinks and food, it did not seem like the experience was worth the over $1,000 we paid as a group. To not make this review all negative I wanted to add some positive things I enjoyed. The singer in the longer/bar area was excellent. She took requests and because she was right next to our table we got to interact with her a lot. Additionally my creamed spinach tasted well, and I could see the effort our waitress was making to reassure us about all the delays. The ambiance of the restaurant was also nice; however I wish we were seated in the main part of the restaurant not the lounge section. I'm not sure if the person who made the reservation requested that area, so I can't speak on why we were seated there. This was probably thee best steakhouse I've been too. Our server Colin was attentive, informative and uber friendly. The steak was perfect and if I could have the oysters shipped, I'd eat them over a month. Pittsburgh needs a Mastro's. I will travel just to go back to this place. Mastro's never disappoints. It's my favorite steak house in DC. As soon as I walked in I was greeted my the hostess who was very friendly. I arrived a little early so the table wasn't ready yet but it did not take long for us to be seated. The ambiance was nice as always. They offered entertainment which included a singer on the piano which was delightful. The waiter was very friendly and attentive. She made sure that we had everything we needed. I like Mastros because their service is impeccable. They make sure that our glasses are always full and they serve us family style. Mastros has outdone every other name in the game (Joes, CG, Occidental, even...) Love it when I come in and there is music; I'll change my table reservation to a bar setting for that alone. For NYE they had the restaurant decorated in balloons! So pretty! This is definitely a dining experience place to visit. They stressed the dress code at reservation as well as follow up call, which made me worry if I was dressed well enough. Although most patrons followed the code, I didn't see anyone turned away who didn't. We both tried the Mambo salad which was like a Caesar Salad but with a horseradish kick which was intense at times but still with the try. We ordered the pork chop and tuna for entrees which both had amazing flavors. My only wish would've been to have the sashimi prepared sushi over sticky rice rather than diced carrots. I would recommend the creamed spinach as a side. It was delicious. We were surprised with a slice of chocolate mousse cake they presented us for our special event. We chose this spot to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. The atmosphere was great: a spacious, dimly lit interior with live music. However, we hit a bump right away with a long wait for our table--even though we had reservations. Standing at the front for nearly twenty minutes(!!) was uncomfortable, especially with the two hosts who kept glancing over and whispering, which felt quite unprofessional. But mashed potatoes were heavenly -- pureed to perfection with a strong garlic flavor and an almost melt-in-your-mouth softness. Mastro's takes fine dining with a live entertainment music atmosphere. There is a cozy atmosphere vibe. Offering both bar seating and dining room options. The menu offers a full menu of chops and seafood and the sides and appetizers can all be shareable. The bone in ribeye was cooked perfectly and we had delicious wedge salad to go with it. Of course if there is anything you have to order is their butter cake. It is what they are known for and served with a very generous portion and served with whipped cream and warm ice cream. I always look forward to having this whenever I dine here. It is an absolute must. Of course I always get fantastic service either from the dining room or the bar. The initial host that welcome us was friendly at first, then that turned into rather awkward behavior as him and another staff were arguing about another staff being on shift way longer than he/she should have been. Tip to management, proper etiquette- remind your host/staffs not to show negativity to/around your guests! Any disagreement should be taken aside away from the eyes of your guests! Besides that initial awkward moment upon check-in, our server was great! He was cordial and attentive and made sure our experience in the dining room was exceptional. Freshly baked bread/pretzels is welcoming and tasty. Perfectly broiled and well-balanced flavor Rockefeller Oyster served in a hot plate is a must. The filet cooked to perfection, and the branzino was mouth-watering is a good pair. And a massive portion of lobster mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach to complement the main will fill you up! Was actually shocked to see a full-size lobster tail in the mashed potatoes- nicely done! And finally, simple elegant vanilla ice cream to end the night. The dining room was busy that night, but due to the high-ceilings and perhaps deadening materials around, it reduced the noise to an acceptable level. Celebrating my birthday I decided to visit one of the most talked about steakhouses in DC. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. When you first walk in there is a bar that you can sit at before the reservation is ready. As a starter I choose scallops and I never had one like this, it was well cooked and the sauce and cheese paired well. For dinner I had way steak with Mac & cheese. This was my first time having wagyu, what they say about it melting in your mouth is true. I recommend this to anyone who would like to try it but I wouldn't make it a usual item, it isn't filling at all. I felt like I was floating like I was on cloud nine or something when I was eating. I also had the garlic mashed potatoes which was family-sized, fluffy, and absolutely delicious. The service at Mastro's is probably the best service I have had at a restaurant in over a decade. Our wait staff knew how to serve food from the right corners, the food came out at the right time, together, and the attentive staff was close by but not hovering in case something was needed, impeccable service. The food was out of this world, three of us had the fish, salmon, halibut and one pork loin. The sides were exceptional, the lobster Mac & cheese, broccolini, cauliflowers and truffle mushrooms. The butter cake which is indescribably delectable signature dessert with an enormous king sized amount of delicious ice cream served with home made whip cream, OMG, is this heaven?? It was good, different but wasn't a huge fan until I had it cold the next day with Icecream --- yummy!!!! This definitely a 2-part 2-day dessert. You need to experience the warm and cold version and I promise no regrets. Definitely pricey but worth the experience and you will definitely have leftovers for the next day which tastes even better. Dinner and a dining experience done right. It's often stated that first impressions are lasting impressions; if that adage is correct, Mastros made such a lasting impression on my dinner party last night! Of the eight people in attendance, six had never been to Mastro. By the end of the evening, indeed, every single one was blown away. The mix of contemporary tunes and timeless classics in a live performance sets this place apart. As we descended the grand staircase, we were led to a large room that easily accommodated our party. Edwin was the star of the evening as a server who was so knowledgeable about the menu that there was no question too hard to answer nor pairing suggestion too tricky to make to ensure our perfectly cooked steaks had the best tasting accouterments. Edwin was so observant that even during casual conversation, he heard me raving about the butter cake and made a mental note that was a surprise, sweet ending to the meal. The drinks were delicious and hand-crafted to provide the perfect balance to enhance the meal. What was most satisfying to see was the teamwork and responsiveness by Lobo, the server assistant who sprung into action when one of the guests accidentally spilled a cocktail; not only did he reset the table for our comfort. He also helped Edwin to ensure the guest had a fresh cocktail and kept our evening moving forward. There are many steak places in Washington, DC, and I have visited many top steak restaurants nationwide. And Mastros continually ranks at the top of the list. The steaks were fantastic. From the bone in 12-ounce fillet to the selection of Wagyu available, it is truly a stake lover's dream. I had both the 12-ounce fillet and Salmon before ordering. I was graced with the presence of Che', who stopped by to ensure that our party was enjoying the evening. I asked for a recommendation for the salmon. As I mentioned, I always have steak, and he suggested the Cajun salmon. The delicate nature blew me away that the fish was prepared and balanced seasoning for the salmon. Not only was my fish and steak cooked to perfection. I added garlic, mashed potatoes, and cream spinach to round out my meal. As I celebrated this evening with friends and family, the sweetest treat arrived: a decadent display of desserts ranging from crème brûlée cheesecake to key lime pie and the famed butter cake. The Crab Cakes That Ruined My Self-Control Stopped by Maestro after work around 8 PM, starving and planning to grab takeout. Walked into this dimly lit spot with sounds of piano playing on the left and a lovely woman singing. The vibe hit immediately, mid-week crowd, warm and inviting, with the bar to the left where it belongs. I ordered crab cakes and asparagus. Simple. I've been on crab cake kick for a few weeks now. I order, Paid, left, got home in about 20 minutes. My plan was noble: eat one crab cake, save the other for tomorrow. Then I took the first bite. It melted. Actually melted in my mouth. I poured the side of garlic butter over it and fell completely in love. One bite turned into two, and suddenly tomorrow's lunch was gone. Both crab cakes, demolished. No willpower, no shame.
