Biscuits and gravy
Abby S.

I have only visited for brunch so far, and was quite pleased! We ordered a nice array for the table, and the standouts (in my opinion) were the chocolate chip pancakes and the breakfast potatoes. The pancakes were perfectly fluffy and a nice treat for the table. The breakfast potatoes were so crispy it was genuinely a marvel. The brunch fare other than that was quite standard, and solid. The atmosphere is nice and cozy. That said, there were a few things I would love to see. The coffee/tea menu wasn't quite too extensive for a brunch spot (would have loved more non-coffee drinks). There are also some upcharges to be aware of not on the menu (like cheese in eggs), which is not all too uncommon for brunch but still something to note!

The worst seasoning for everything ever. Either bland af or inedibly salty.
Shawn H.

We ordered steak and some sides and I was so disappointed. The veggies were wayyyyy too salty. Completely inedible. It's like someone accidentally and heavy hand-idly dumped more than they wanted to in there. The steak was ok. Nothing to sing home about. Went back a week later with a friend and she ordered the salmon which wasn't half bad. I'd say it's more hype than anything else unfortunately.

Really cool vibe accompanied by high energy staff that works well together. I came here with steak in mind but ended up opting for the fish... not a great idea... way to salty and appreciate the willingness to refire...was kinda basic. Extensive wine list may bring me back but not 100% convinced. Perhaps slow down, stop overdressing the food (salt and salad dressing were a tad excessive) and strive for quality along with speed and we may have a winner

Hadn't realized I've been here before but wow, better than I remember! Nothing's changed get those fingerling potatoes with the ranch for sure. The steak and eggs is amazing! That garlic butter is great and it was the perfect medium rare which can be kind of hit or miss at places. The Dutch baby was pretty good but a skip in my opinion, get the buttermilk biscuits instead.

Steelhead Trout

First. Get a reservation. This place was packed and rightfully so! It was delicious! We had the Buttermilk Biscuits, Butcher Steak, and Steelhead Trout. All the food was seasoned correctly and served hot. They brought complimentary wine for our anniversary! So awesome! When in the area, I would highly recommend.

I still find myself craving this place! It came highly recommended on TikTok, and it definitely lived up to the hype. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to take many photos because my phone was dying, but the hostess was incredibly kind and offered to charge my phone for me in their space. That small gesture made the experience even better. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. The biscuits were perfectly done--not dry at all, but buttery, soft, and even better with the pimento cheese spread. The combination was amazing! My steak was tender, juicy, and cooked to perfection, while the broccoli had the perfect crisp texture that added a nice balance to the meal. The restaurant itself has a beautiful rustic yet modern atmosphere. The dim lighting creates a cozy feel, with most of the brightness coming from the natural sunlight that fills the space. Between the incredible food, welcoming service, and inviting ambiance, this spot is definitely one I would return to again.

Wow x3 If you love steak, gourmet cocktail, comfort food with a fine dining twist - this is the place. This place definitely lives up to its name! Place: it has more of a casual feeling with some ambience. Feels comfortable with wooden furnitures. Service: I believe we had Micah who was just exceptional- very personable and gave us the perfect recommendations. Fast and prompt service. Food: every dish we ordered was amazing. Cobb salad was really great- but the bacon on top was theee best bacon I've ever had. I've been content with just that order. Amazing oysters- fresh and condiments went very well. Now steak was Cooked to perfection and seasoned well. Now-- I am not a "bread lover" but Micah said the place was known for its biscuit (they charge for it and I would too if it's this good). Told him about my lukewarm love for the bread and he said "I would order it for educational purposes". I like education , especially this kind of education so I did- and yes, it is true. It was theee highlight of the night. Oh it's special. Crispy- and buttery almost like half croissant and half biscuit. The jam and pimemto cheese just out of this world. We actually came home and researched the recipe of "wanna be- st. Anselm biscuit" Definitely one of the best educational experience I've had. Price: I thought it was reasonable. Great portion of food that's why. St. Anselm - thank you and we shall make some excuse to come back to DC to come here again.

Biscuits and buratta

Loved the biscuits and the potatoes those are a must try. Servers and bartenders are so nice. They also have a really good espresso martini. We were sat in a unique booth that almost made the dining experience feel private which was lovely.

Broccoli... decently charred but nothing more than just a lightly broiled broccoli

Finally got to check out St. Anselm and it did not disappoint! It's a cool vibe for dinner with friends or even a date night. The staff are super attentive to everything going on. They made sure to keep our table clean and gave us new silverware and plates before or entrees arrived. Any food that we did not finish was boxed up and put into bags for us. The manager was actively walking around the restaurant, making sure that every guest were enjoying their dinner. The food was good all around but there are some dishes that outshine the rest. The ribeye and New York strip were very good. The butchers steak I got for my son and he didn't really like it, it was lacking flavor. If you do anything when you go, please make sure to get the biscuits. Hands down THE BEST BISCUITS I've ever had lol. They are the most flaky and buttery biscuits, you can count each layer that these have. Pro tip is to ask for butter and the house made jam. The pimento cheese is good with them but it becomes a little too decadent. Overall I'm happy we made the decision to come here, we will be back soon.

Bobo Chicken and pan fried mashed potatoes
Michelle B.

Came last on a Friday, they were able to seat us with no problem. Got the chicken, grilled okra and pan fried mashed potatoes. I wasn't really impressed with the new recipe for the Bobo chicken however the grilled okra and mashed potatoes didn't disappoint. Our waiter also let us try a Madeira to go with the peach crumble. It was a perfect compliment. I love this place, not just for the food but the great customer service each and everytime

For what it is: *Food is good *Service is also good, but my aunts had to educate our waiter on what the term "dirty rocks" meant when it comes to a martini, but he gave us good food suggestions. *Atmosphere screams date night I had the lamb which I have had very few times. I only order it when I think the restaurant can live up to its reviews. I am happy with my selection and was very tasty. I shared small bites with the family and they liked it to. My aunt ordered the Bobo Chicken, THAT is something that should be ordered if you come. What a bite! Tried some steak and really didn't wow me like the chicken, good though. Overall 4-5, I had a very good meal elsewhere earlier in the week so this didn't quite do it for me, but would still recommend coming.

Watermelon salad
Ayotunde I.

Absolutely loved our meal here. Everything was a knockout. I ordered the chicken and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. You'd assume there's not many ways you can innovate fried chicken but there's was amazing! Other highlights of our meal were the biscuits, the broccoli, the watermelon salad, and the ribeye steak. The service was great and we loved the dark, moody cabin-inspired ambience as well.

Have you ever had a server make your whole night? Abby was that person and more! Her thoughtful suggestions, jokes, and kindness put my birthday celebration over the top! What's more- with just a couple of questions, she was able to pick a perfect wine pairing for me. In addition to the exceptional service, there was stellar food to enjoy ! Everything we ate from the famed biscuits to the deviled eggs to the steaks impressed. I found myself wishing I lived closer so I could get those biscuits on my way home everyday! We sat in a cute curtained booth that felt luxe and comfortable. For the price, St. Anselm is one heck of a restaurant. Glad I got to celebrate there.

One of our favorite local spots, great cozy vibes with a classic DC vibe. Highly recommend the biscuits and pimento cheese.

Ask the Community - St. Anselm

What is the dress code do you wear fancy casual?

You can wear whatever you like. No judgements.

What is the outside like? They only have outdoor seating for most of their reservations but it's winter lol?

The outdoor set up is just tables outside I didn't see any heaters? I wouldn't sit outside in the cold

Is this kid friendly? I have a 1 yr old and an 11 yr old.

The restaurant itself is not un-friendly towards kids, but I would check out the menu to see if there are things that your kids would like to eat. We have a 9 and 12 year old and though we LOVED the food, we didn't think it would fit our 9 year…

Do they have outdoor heaters on the patio?

Yes they do.

Are masks required at the table you're sitting at ? Or just to get around the restaurant?

They are not required while sitting at the table eating. They are required moving through out the restaurant and going to the restrooms o

What is their corkage fee?

$25 per bottle, and the bottle can't be on their list (it's posted online)

Is this kid friendly for lunch or an early dinner?

Yes! The music can be a little loud but it is accepting of families

Do you have happy hour?

No, no happy hour. But the bar opens at 4pm (an hour before dinner service) and stays open between brunch and dinner on weekends (3-5pm).

Is there valet parking?

Nope. But there is ample free parking in and around the Union Market District area.

Are there high chairs?

Yes

How is the noise level at St. Anselms? Looking for a relaxed birthday dinner for 5 folks, one with hearing issues.

I went Friday for dinner and it was LOUD. Lol

The weight was super busy, but we were able to meet a couple on the way in who had a reservation. When we got up to the front, we noticed that the couple ran to the counter at the bar and got seats. When we asked the hostess, how long the wait for a party of two would be she said one hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes. I had to catch my flight so we definitely could not wait that long. Right when we were about leave and walk away, the very kind and nice couple (Montez & Alayna) that we met walking up, told us that they had secured bar seats and that we could take their breakfast brunch dining reservation. THIS WAS A BLESSING! I purchased their first round of drinks because they were generous with their reservation. There are great people in this city, thanks! We were seated right away at a dining table, and the place was packed, as usual. Our server was wonderful. I believe her name was Alisha or Aisha, and she took care of us very well. We ordered: Naan Bread Appetizer, Blueberry Pancakes with Mascarpone, side of chicken sausage, Creme Brûlée French Toast, side of scrambled eggs, and side of Hash browns. For beverages we had coffee and apple juice plus water. Our food came out within 10 to 12 minutes and everything was delicious and amazing. We were so stuffed and really enjoyed our time here. At the end of our reservation the restaurant Manager approached us (named Derek or Ryan) with the gentleman from the couple who gave us his reservation. They surprised us each with a decadent dessert! This was in response to us buying their first round of drinks. The customer service of our server was AMAZING, the food was DELICIOUS, and the surprise desserts were FABULOUS! This is definitely our go-to restaurant in DC. I can genuinely say I've never had anything quite like them. If you visit, these are a must-try! The drinks were just as impressive. I had an espresso martini that was easily in my top five martinis I've ever had. It was that good! The overall drink selection and quality definitely added to the experience. Service was impeccable. Our waiter was attentive, made sure we had everything we needed, and did a great job throughout our visit. It's always nice when great food is matched with equally great service. The atmosphere was also really nice. It has that classic diner feel, but with a more upscale and modern touch. It's a comfortable setting that still feels a little elevated, making it a great spot for brunch. Prices were reasonable, especially considering the quality of the food and drinks. Unconventional Diner definitely made a great impression on me. Between the loaded breakfast biscuits, amazing espresso martini, and excellent service, this is absolutely a place I'd return to. I highly recommend giving it a try!

This is a cute American-Mediterranean spot with an intimate atmosphere, beautiful decor, and not too many tables, which made it perfect for a relaxed family brunch. It wasn't overly loud or crowded, and the service was incredible from start to finish. I would definitely recommend making a reservation. I started with an espresso martini, and this was a 10/10 honestly, a thousand out of 10 . It was strong, delicious, and one of my favorite espresso martinis I've had recently. For an appetizer, we got the Sampler of All, which lets you try several of their spreads. We tried the chickpea tahini, Hripiti with roasted red pepper, Greek feta and fresh thyme, Greek yogurt with Persian cucumber and dill, and beet labneh with walnuts. My favorite was definitely the Hripiti the roasted red pepper and feta combination was so good! The sampler was definitely different from what I expected, but I liked being able to try several of the spreads. For my entrée, I had the short ribs and eggs, which I believe was an off-menu option. It was DELICIOUS. I actually took some home, and it reheated really well the next morning for breakfast, which is always a win! My family also ordered the shrimp and grits, Wagyu burger, pistachio French toast, and Ciftlik Breakfast with scramble and rose & cardamom biscuits. Everything we tried was really good, and there was a nice variety of sweet and savory options for everyone. Another thing I loved was that brunch was pretty reasonably priced for DC. We spent less than $50 per person, including drinks, which I thought was a great value considering the quality of the food, cocktails, service, and overall experience. The service was probably one of my favorite parts of the experience. Our server was very attentive and paid attention to the little details without being overbearing. You could tell they genuinely cared about making sure we were enjoying ourselves. And the decor is so cute! They have a little swing that we took pictures on, which was a fun touch and definitely added to the experience. Overall, Tiffany's was exactly the type of brunch spot I enjoy good food, strong cocktails, beautiful surroundings, great service, and an intimate atmosphere where you can actually sit, talk, and enjoy your meal.
