I came here with my parents on a Thursday afternoon and we got one 3 piece cod and fries, 2-piece fish only, clam chowder tanker, and large piña colada fresh milkshake. Our food came out quickly and we took it upstairs to eat. The view from up there was quite pretty as it was facing the Puget Sound, and there was plenty of seating. The food itself was pretty mediocre, nothing special. Fish has quite a bit of batter and not a lot of fish, and the fries didn't seem fresh and looked like they were double fried or something. The clam chowder was quite tasty and had a lot of ingredients in it. I also enjoyed the milkshake but the ice cream wasn't really present, just tasted like drinking milk and cream with pineapple chunks and coconut syrup. All of the food came out to be around $45, which is pretty pricey. I did appreciate that all of their packaging was industrial comparable, and they had garbage cans for garbage, compost (with a sign explaining what could go in that bin), and recycling. read more

Tonight I paid almost triple what the price used to be, but i figured it's spuds so whatever. When i started eating I immediately noticed the halibut tasted super fishy and stringy, almost flexible. Let's talk about fish, baby! After riding for two hours up and down Alki on a 3-seater bike catching Pokemon with my 7 year old and my boyfriend, it was time to grub! My 7 year old has raved about coming here before, so we told him we would come again today. Their menu is pretty simple, easy to read and makes it nice and quick to order. I got the 3 piece fish and chips to split with my son. That was more than enough. It tasted so fresh I couldn't get it in my mouth fast enough, even though it was so hott it was burning my taste buds off. The food was fantastic! I don't come to Spuds very often because it's not in the most convenient location for me. But after a long day in Seattle we decided to venture over here. Alki is always packed and it's usually a struggle to find a parking spot but Spuds has it's own small private lot. We ordered several different items: "The Special" for $13.49, it included a 3 piece cod fish and chips, an extra large drink (free refills), large tarter sauce and ketchup. I shared this with my husband and it was enough for us and we brought home leftovers. I covered my fish in the garlic malt vinegar and it added good flavor dipped with tarter sauce. The fries are unsalted and were a little over cooked and some were burnt and hard. We also ordered a bowl of clam chowder for $5.79. It tasted ok today. It wasn't as delicious as I remembered it to be, but it had a decent amount of clams. We were initially going to order popcorn shrimp for my kiddo, but they didn't have any here like the Greenlake location, so we settled on "chicken strips only" for $6.69. I didn't try this but my daughter said it was better than good. We sat upstairs and it was nice and quiet with a beautiful view of the water. The women's bathroom was clean enough. SPUDS! It's a Seattle institution! What can I say that hasn't already been said? This place is awesome! The Alki Spuds Fish and Chips is busting at the seams with charm and character! It's one of the few restaurants near here that actually has a parking lot too! Located directly across the street from Alki Beach, Spuds has amazing views of the Puget Sound, the Ferry's and the Olympic Mountains! Great food, good customer service, okay prices... all with some of the most gorgeous views in the city! Eat in one of the dining rooms (there's a 1st and a 2nd floor,) or take your foodie goodies to go and walk across the street to the beach. You can't go wrong either way! Of note is that this Spuds is located in West Seattle. As such, the restaurant pays homage to the historical surroundings with its wall art in the downstairs hallway. Very cool pictures of old Seattle and some of the old Alki waterfront gems! Definitely worth checking out! This place is really 3 star food quality- but add in the historic charm and the million dollar views and its 5 stars all the way for Spuds! read more

Spud's is a classic institution in the same way Dick's is. If you're wanting fish & chips and you're in Seattle, especially at Alki, then you have to at least consider going to Spud's. The last time I was there we split the 3-piece cod & chips, the clams, and a cup of New England style clam chowder. The filets if fish were fairly big. It was much larger than some of the other Seattle-bases chains that I've been to, but it wasn't the largest piece of fish either - that distinction still belongs to the Burien Fish House. Anyway, the fish was crispy, not dry, but a little flaky. It was cooked really well. The fries were good as well. It wasn't difficult to enjoy the crispy, fried fish and the crispy, fried French fries... with the crispy, fried clams. What I'm trying to say, it's pretty darn good crispy, fried seafood. Incase you're wondering, the clam chowder was not fried - but still good. The three drawbacks to Spud's are 1) price, it's a little pricey for what it is, 2) how busy it gets - I wouldn't wait 20-30 minutes in line for it, and 3) in a busy day, good luck find seating inside, which is fine - just don't come with the expectation that you'll have a guaranteed seat. I would definitely recommend Spud's to someone who hasn't tried fish & chips is looking for something iconic. It's right up there with Ivar's on the pier. read more

Spud's is a great spot for those new or visiting Seattle and is on Alki Beach - a wonderful area just a few minutes outside of the city that, to me, still has a grungy/90's vibe to it that I absolutely dig. Spud's is exactly what you'd expect and want from a quaint seaside shop and just about everything (if not everything?) comes fried - the way it should be at a Fish n Chips spot. Overall, everything looks and tastes like it should - nicely fried fish and seafood that's crisp and has the right amount of breading/protein mixture and decent fries that go up a notch with their garlic vinegar (def a must get with it). Overall, if you find yourself visiting one of the parks in the area, or going biking along the water on a Lime - visiting Spud's is the perfect accompaniement to your seaside day. read more

Egads! Personally, I go out of my way to avoid Spuds. Not just this location Spuds in general (assessment comes after years of giving different locations a try since I was a kid.) I read somewhere that this location was the first, opened in 1935 and Ivar's bought this location after the founder's (Jack Alger) death. I don't like the ultra-processed, thin, strange looking fish pieces, or the hard breadcrumb batter, or the greasy limp fries. I can do the milk shakes though. Them I can do. It's cheaper than Sunfish, maybe that's why it's usually busy. I wish Ivars would turn this into an Ivars. I'd be all over that! read more

It's strange how many mediocre fast food places are considered "institutions" in Seattle. Dicks, Taco Time, Kidd Valley and Spud. I get it in a way, people grow up with a place and have affection for it but that doesn't mean it's actually very good. I can sort of understand that part of Dick's appeal is that it's cheap, but that's just not the case at spud. An Oyster plate and a bread bowl of chowder comes to about 15 bucks. I can almost pay that at a sit down restaurant and get a salad too. If the food were really good I'd say fine but the fried food is chewy, the chowder is gummy and the bread bowl isn't even warm. I'd even understand the appeal of this beach side location if there wasn't a far better place like SunFish just down the street. Add to that the bored teens working the counter and it just come to a whole bunch of ehh. read more

My friends that were visiting ordered the regular fish and chips with fries. So got to taste the best of both worlds clams and fish fried. Talk about the perfect fish fry. Both clams and fish cooked to nice crispy brown on outside. The inside was steaming hot! More so can tell with the fish soon break a piece see all this steam coming out, the meat of fish moist, and flaky. The clams something that can be hit or miss I have found. The clams smaller pieces so easy over cook them and the inside all dry out. In this case it was on point. The fries were ok. I do like mix it up with some skin on them. The star of the show was the fish and clams. They also have oysters and chicken on the menu. Why would you come here order chicken. Just saying... The vinegar station though was pretty cool. They have lot of different options. I just wanted stick with the original plan or with little tartar sauce. It all open kitchen or say open fry station since everything is deep fried. I can appreciate simple menu that does it right. They fry everything to order so be careful first bite. The service at the counter was fabulous. No waiter service you just wait hear number called then hopefully find open table. They have upstairs dining area so don't be discourage if the bottom part if full. The restaurant sits right along the boardwalk in Alki. The upstairs dining area really nice cause you get the view of the boardwalk. On clear day (thankfully on that day could not have ask for better weather) nothing more relaxing seeing people chilling out on the beach, people on bikes, and good food. Oh man... what do I say about Spud? This is Seattle Fish 'n Chips... not Ivars. You can't go wrong with Alki Beach in the summer and a nice 3 piece. I've been coming here for years, and I'll continue to go as long as they are around. Some things I noticed on this last visit... they stopped charging extra for tartar and ketchup?!? I thought the world had ended! Amazingly smart decision. I don't mind paying $13 for great fish and chips, but charging for tartar is just stupid. My cousin was stopping through town on his way to Iraq, so we had a beach afternoon and some Spud. My aunt and mother both worked here as West Seattle-born teens, and I think that nostalgia + location is reasoning for pricing. The fish was perfect underneath it's cloak of crusty butter (I peel it off) and the garlic vinegar is fresh. The scrimps were bigger than expected, and mighty encrusted. The chowder was not as meaty as Ivar's as far as 'fast food' chowder, but tasty with some condiment power. The soda had a perfect CO2. The dog and motorcycle watching is unsurpassed. The Alki stereotypes make people perusing less than stellar, and the kite surfers were entertaining. Worth a date with someone who understands the value of indulging in artery blocking while holding paws watching the sunset on Alki. :x read more

I am a fan of Spuds. I like the larger sized pieces of fish, and I love the way they wrap takeaway orders in paper, sort of like the English. Some other reviewers have noted the prices. As fast food genres go, fish 'n chips just isn't cheap food, but Spuds seems to be in line with other fish 'n chipperies in the area (Sunfish, Ivar's Fish Bar, etc). If there is cheaper good f&c, let me know! Their chips aren't crispy like McDonalds, etc, but it's important to note these fries aren't coming from a bag of frozen prefried fries from JR Simplot. Spuds chips its potatoes every day. Not as crispy, but genuine with great flavor. If they need to work on anything, it's consistency. Most visits the fish is divine, but on other days the breading mix is rather salty. Most of the time the facility is clean, but on summer weekends when the place and it's restroom can get overwhelmed by divers, skaters, volleyball dudes and various beach rats, the place can get a little grungy. Finally, regarding the tartar sauce, I like it a lot. There are a couple schools of thought on tartar sauce, some like a less sweet, dill-heavy taste (Ivar's), others like me prefer a sweeter, more tangy sauce. Sort of Miracle Whip v. mayo. Spuds is the place for fish and chips in West Seattle. The portions are large and meaty with tasty chips to boot. For around 20 dollars you have 3 pieces of Cod (enough to share with my Pop), fries, tartar sauce, drink and a cup of chowder. Parking is a breeze. Even though right on Alki point they have spuds only spaces. There was an art festival and we still parked right away. This was clutch. Clean inside and service was friendly. Do not forget to try the different vinegars. I chose the garlic and the pepper and the former I was on point. Good compliment to round out the salt in the fish. Oh. Have been coming to Spuds since 1995 or so. Used to live at Alki so it was very close. Now live by the UW so it's a far drive to get to and there is one near Greenlake I can go to. Took a friend here for lunch to cheer her up. Hubby dealing with cancer & she really needed a day to get away. We split an order of fish & chips and some clam strips. We ate upstairs & enjoyed the view of the beach & water from up there. Food prices seem just a touch high but I'm sure the rent on the buidling is ridiculous & the food quality is pretty good. The restaurant's nostalgia is pretty incredible. The Fish and chips were pretty on par with what I expected for the price we paid. The quality of the prawns, cod and halibut we ordered was pretty good. The french fries we ordered were a bit undercooked and soggy but when I asked employee to re-fry the fries she was very gracious & apologetic and gave my wife & I a fresh, more crispy batch. GREAT FRIENDLY STAFF!! The parking at the West Seattle location is pretty crummy in the evenings. But overall a solid four stars for this Seattle iconic establishment. read more

Very good. I am a fish and chip regular, in this city I have yet to find a great spot! I would defiantly come back and order the fish and chips. I noted in a different review the tarter sauce is homemade. It is good, however if you are not a fan of sweet pickles, that is their spin on it. I am not usually a fan and still enjoyed it. The chowder is thick and chunky and has bacon in it. After this meal I prefer the traditional clam chowder and tarter sauce. You can't go wrong when it's done right. That is a personal preference. So, I just have to say that I can recommend Spuds. It's definitely comfort food for the Northwest. And, I believe it's probably what Ivar's used to be like. I don't usually get the cod, I upgrade to the halibut fish and chips. The chowder is also very good and can recommend. I like the way that they wrap your fish and chips in paper for your, giving you an opportunity to put some vinegar on them before they're closed up. Once you go to Spuds, every once in a while there will be a craving to go back. You can ignore it for a day, you can ignore it for a week, but eventually it catches up to you and you will find yourself back there! read more

Rain, rain... Go away. Come again another day... Well, the rain did not comply so this is where our rainy day eat-athon began on one moist Saturday in April. Located on Alki Beach, this haven of deep fried seafood has been in existence since who knows when. It claims to be the oldest fast food joint in Seattle, and you can tell. It's a bit scruffy on eyes, but it'll do, especially with a great view of the water (outdoor seating near the entrance). Had the 2 pieces of fish + fries for $9.49. It came in a small carton container, could have used more fries but I am to fries what Hamburglar is to hamburgers. The fish was fried in a well-seasoned batter that had a great crunch without drying out the fish. They offer the usual malt vinegar for your dipping pleasure but also have garlic vinegar to mix things up. Still have to try their clam chowder...they even serve it in a bread bowl! read more
