3.5 stars. The day with my father in law continued. We decided to head out here for some fish and chips. The setting is sweet...right across the street from the beach. You can even see the Space Needle in the distance. Awesome views! For my food I got an order of halibut and chips and I added a piece of cod. Got a Coke to drink. Total was $24.71. Holy moses that is a grip of money. Was it worth it? Maybe....here is how everything was. Halibut and Chips- Halibut is by far the greatest fish in the world. This halibut was tasty. Small portion but tasty. The pieces of halibut reminded me of chicken fingers as far as their shape. The fish was flaky and I really dug the batter they use here. The chips were great! Huge fries that were crunchy and cut into square logs like my mom used to make. This meal was good but it was incredibly small for the $15.99 price tag. Unless you HAVE to have halibut, get the cod instead. Piece of Cod- I got a solo piece of cod. This was a much larger and flatter piece of fish compared to the halibut. It tasted delicious. I topped this with their garlic vinegar. Man this stuff was good! I'm not the biggest fan of malt vinegar that is usually served with fish and chips, but this garlic stuff was great! The fish was tasty, all white (not like some places in SD where you find grey pieces....nasty I know) and it was a good sized piece. If I came back, I think I might just load up on all cod. It costs less than the halibut and was a little bit better IMO. I really enjoyed my meal. It was a good first fish and chip experience in Seattle. The workers were friendly, the view is unbeatable and the cod was really really good. The halibut was fine too just too small of a portion for the price. Would I go back? Yes indeed! The location of the restaurant was great. I loved the view of the water. The raw cod fish was sitting to the side, on a plate with flour already on it. The plate was uncovered when I saw it. This is our go-to on Alki for Fish and Chips. We live two blocks away, but usually only visit here when friends or family are in town. Here's what you should know- 1. Tartar sauce comes with the meals, but you have to pay (.40) to get more or if you order a la cart. 2. Their fries are delicious, always perfectly crisp. 3. It's all fried. I can't tell the difference between fried fishes, but if you can- go ahead and order the halibut. 4. Bring your sunglasses if you come at sunset, it's bright in the upstairs seating area! I just ordered the three-piece halibut and fries and a banana shake. The fries were OK but the fish was little wedges almost looks like orange wedges about that size may be a little bigger and they were awful. The shake was good but it was only 12 ounces kind of stingy I think. So for $27 I'm walking out of here very dissatisfied. I'm never coming back. It's just that bad. Right off alki. Menu has a lot of under $10 items. This place gives pretty big portions! So I was happy! We ordered the fried oysters and chips. With a big bowl of clam chowder. Fried oysters had light reading and juicy large pieces of oysters. Fries were done the way I like them, crispy on the ends and mushy in the middle. Clam chowder... Not sure why mine was so sandy? Very rich and creamy. It's going to fill you up pretty easily. I didn't even touch the crackers. Make sure to dine upstairs for the "view". Everything is self service. Here's the rundown: *Cod- so good, large serving, and at the price point you can't beat it. *Halibut- good but much more expensive than the cod and not worth the extra money with how good the cod is. *Prawns- INCREDIBLE. When I travel from Minnesota to a watery town such as Seattle I expect to have improved fish & chips options. Spud was obliged to represent, and fortunately it was exactly the kind of place I'd hoped for. The ambiance is very seaside-village-frequented-by-locals. The crew behind the counter were just really, really friendly. So were the people sitting hear us, actually. It's just such a friendly place! What I was happiest with, though was the experience of eating my fish. The exterior was exceptionally crispy, so I was able to drench them in lemon juice and vinegar and the texture remained pleasant. It was my late father's favorite fish n chip spot and a favorite among locals.If price is not an issue, the halibut fish is a must with the tartar sauce and any of the specialty sauces they provide. The staff does an excellent job frying the fish and chips to perfection. If you and your group are feeling it, I also recommend trying out the fried oysters. They are fresh, well-sized, and tasty. For first-timers, try sitting up on the inside deck. You get a wonderful view of the beach. The nice thing about this location is that you can choose to do a beach walk after your hearty fish n chip meal. With a meal at Spuds, you are not just getting high quality food. I use to love eating at Spud's at Alki. Due to COVID and the West Seattle Bridge Closure, it's been 3 years since I was last there and was really looking forward to the usually good food and pleasant dining experience. I went to Spud's on November 3, 2022, at 7pm. There were no other customers in the downstairs Kitchen and ordering area. As I walked in, I immediately saw an employee, an older man (with white hair and a white goatee) stuff food in his mouth, just as I walked in the door. Normally I would have just walked out the door if I saw something like this in a restaurant, but I came all the way in the dark and rain from the Queen Anne Hill area and was looking forward to a long-awaited dinner at Spud's. The employee didn't even wash his hands after stuffing food in his mouth and seeing me come in. He comes to the register and is chewing his food while taking my order....that was so disgusting and unsanitary. That was first RED FLAG this place is filthy and unsanitary. Thank goodness he at least put on a glove before he handled the food (or I would have walked out the door) The raw cod was sitting on a plate, unrefrigerated in flour, that he took and put into the fryer. There were no other customers in the restaurant, so I'll assume the Cod had been sitting there unrefrigerated in the open for quite some time. Then I could see the all the uncooked fries had been sitting in a metal basket over the fryer. He grabs some of the uncooked fries sitting in the metal basket over the fryers and puts them and another basket and puts them into the fryer oil. The French Fries ending up tasting burnt, stale and dried out, even though they just came out of the fryer. They were already hot from sitting over the hot fryer (for who knows how long) before they were cooked and ended up being overcooked. They certainly weren't covered and refrigerated before they were cooked. The Fish was good and at least I didn't get sick from their unsanitary kitchen food preparation. It was close to $20 with tax for a 3 piece Fish & Chips Dinner. The chips were overcooked, burnt, dried out and stale from unsanitary storage and being preheated, sitting over a hot fryer (for who knows how long) and I threw them out...they tasted horrible! As I looked at previous older Yelp reviews of Spud's at Alki, I could see I was not the first person to spot Spud's disgusting, unsanitary food preparation practices. A Yelp review posted 2/28/22 says; "The older man who was working the cash register, lifted his mask and stuffed a piece of fish into his mouth, fingers and all, then lowered his mask while he chewed. They need a visit by the Department of Health. Places this unsanitary are usually shut down by the Health Department, until they make necessary health changes. There are very few fish and chips chains in the greater Seattle area, including Ivars and Spuds. Skippers and Steamers both bit the dust after changing their breading to reduce costs. The cod filets at Spuds are three times the size as Ivars world class cuts. Spuds fries are home cut and cooked to perfection. The Alki Spuds location is second to no other on the West Coast, featuring a roof top seating area overlooking the renown Alki beach, Olympic Mountains, bikers, skaters, ferry boats, and the bluest skies anywhere. I avoided Alki for lack of parking for years, but was delighted to learn Spuds now has its own parking lot behind the restaurant, so parking is no longer an issue. read more

I love this place when you arrive you can smell the fried fish in the air. The meals come with plenty of fish. My family and I visited during Covid they allowed us to seat ourselves as long as we social distanced from others eating inside. It gets very cold on the water front in the fall and winter months so be sure to dress warm. I felt bad that the waiter had to go out to the cold to deliver or call each number. I guess they are functioning well for Covid times but they could have a better systems set up for picking up orders as I saw a lot of people waiting for there orders and nobody wants cold food. I would recommend they take phone numbers with the orders to have people called or texted as there orders are ready. But the food was great and the scenery was to die for. read more

My Mom grew up coming here for fish n chips, and so did I. When we found out my brother was going to do a mission trip to England, we all came here to celebrate! I love the simple menu, incredible views, and delicious food that this restaurant offers. The menu includes fries with deep fried halibut, cod, clams, etc. plus clam chowder and shrimp cocktail. If you like the French fries at Dick's, then you will love these fries! Something that many people don't realize is that there is a private parking lot behind the restaurant that nearly always has spots available. No need to parallel park out on Alki Ave! I honestly find myself craving it and when I moved from Shoreline to Renton I was so sad that I would be so far from my favorite Greenlake Spuds and then I remembered ALKI SPUDS!!! We randomly stumbled in here for lunch on Labor Day weekend after walking along the beach. I ordered the 1-piece fish and chips meal, and my husband ordered the 2-piece fish and chips meal. We agreed that the fish itself was the highlight: very flaky and not greasy at all. I didn't, however, care for the tartar sauce, because it was way too sweet. There were a handful of tables outside, and we were able to snatch one once we received our food. Customer service was not friendly. The employees looked bored and little communication with each other and with customers. In the 20 minutes I was there, I saw two employees out of four on their phone and they only wished one customer out of ten orders, a good day when they left. I did not enjoy the food. I got one Alaskan cod and a cup of clam chowder. The only thing I liked was the clams in the chowder. They were cooked well and were good size pieces. The tartare sauce served with the cod was thick, sweet, and bland all at the same time. It tasted like a spoon full of butter with sweet relish. The cod was cut very thin and over cooked. Since the cod was cut thin, that means there is more bread than fish. I'm also glad I did not get the chips (French fries) since the uncooked ones where in large bowls stacked on top of each other like a pyramid against a wall. The restaurant was also very dirty. There were no clean tables and the floor and counters were dirty. I will say the service was fast, I had my meal in 9 minutes and 2 of the 9 minutes, it sat on the counter untouched until they called my number. Overall, I did not feel good after eating there and I did not finish my meal. This is how I feel eating there today around 6:00 pm, maybe other days or time of day is better. read more

I parked in front of Spud's with my newborn baby on Friday, May 31, 2019 to go on a walk with a friend. After having dined there, my car was GONE. It had been towed, and I found out later it was because a Spud's employee called the towing company on my car for obstructing a nearby driveway. I was NOT blocking the driveway, and have lived in Seattle my whole life and never had unsound judgement on this. I was shocked. I also asked the Spud's employees if they knew what happened to my car, and was met with curt, unhelpful responses. It was an entire evening ruined, having to deal with the logistics of a newborn car seat taken away, a parking ticket on top of the towing fee, and finding another car to pick up my SUV in TUKWILA. I don't recommend entering Spud's for their unfriendly service alone. read more
