Salmon burger and fries!
Nicole D.

Tucked away on a residential street, the South Ocean Grill is one of Patchogue's hidden gems. Every time I've been here, the food has been phenomenal. I love the grilled salmon and salmon sandwich. Although I haven't ventured outside of my love for salmon here yet, family and friends who have dined with me always enjoyed their food, whether it was steak, chicken, or salad. The only downsides are the lack of parking and the size of the restaurant. I enjoy the homey feel, but it has limited seating. Overall, the South Ocean Grill is a must-visit if you're in the Patchogue area.

This was a very nice restaurant.

This was a very nice restaurant. The food was very good. We were the only ones there at the time, so we can't know what the service is normally. Yet, it was incredible while we were there. I had the shrimp. They were very good. Actually, they were great. Nice large shrimp with nice flavors.

The food exceeded our expectations! Super flavorful, fresh, and unique dishes here. It's a small and cozy establishment and has a pretty small staff, but they deliver a great meal. We cannot wait to come back to explore other menu items. A hidden gem for sure!

Nothing quite like restaurant week to open my eyes to new places! I stumbled across South Ocean Grill while looking at restaurants participating in restaurant week. My boyfriend and I immediately fell in love with their price fixed menu and decided this was where we were having date night! This place is small, like really small. HOWEVER, it is super cozy and inviting. If you don't like tight spaces I don't recommend dining in. I immediately fell in love with the decor and the ambiance. It's very rustic and like I said above super homey. For the food I ordered the Korean cauliflower, it was cooked to perfection but there were a few pieces drowning in sauce, could've used a little less. Otherwise amazing. My boyfriend started with the crab cake which was a $4 add on, he wasn't too thrilled but he did say it was amazing (crab cakes aren't my thing personally). For our main we both got the grilled salmon. We were slightly disappointed that they had run out of the filet mignon but the salmon proved to be an amazing choice. It was perfectly cooked and came with a delicious sauce on the side so you could add as much as you wanted. The green beans were cooked perfectly as well as the potatoes. We were both really impressed considering we thought we were gonna get a steak. Dessert was also great I had the gluten free chocolate cake, since I'm watching my figure, obviously. And it was heavenly. Creamy with a raspberry jam drizzled on top of it. I'm not gonna stop thinking about it. My boyfriend had the crème brûlée cheese cake which was also great, it wasn't saturated and held a great shape. Our drinks were alright, we both got "snowy" cocktails and they came in very "summery" glasses. My boyfriends margarita had coconut in it and it just seemed like a cocktail for the wrong time of year. I had an aperol spritz which was delightful but but also a little sweet with the "snowy" aspect to it. Overall, we had a great time and we definitely agreed on coming back in the summertime since it's right by the water and the summer cocktails look INSANE. For the winter season I'd just be prepared to be really close to other patrons since it's really small and there isn't a heated outdoor section.

Everything tasted fresh and was well made. PROS: great little place! The waitstaff was so friendly and all wear shirts that say the restaurant is Veteran Owned. That's awesome! The seafood is great. Mussel appetizer was good. The toasted bread with it was so good, I didn't expect to love the bread so much. Volcano shrimp were good, but the coleslaw was the star. I could have ate a bowl of just the slaw. So fresh and not too heavy with mayo. The steak was well cooked to temp. It was sufficiently seasoned as well. Delicious roasted potatoes and veggies on the side. The burger was the star! 5 star burger. Fresh roll, perfectly grilled patty. I would go just for the burger. It was insanely good and I would swear it eclipsed the seafood. The brownie sundae was incredible. Safe room for this warm, cake brownie topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. GET DESSERT! CONS: They were out of Calamari, which was really disappointing as I so wanted to try it. The risotto in my flounder special was not very good. I left it after one bite. Risotto is a tough dish to do, and quickly turns into wall spackle if done incorrectly. The risotto was the only real miss here. OVERALL: No waterfront dining, but it's close. Small place with really great food. You can tell they care about the end product. Everything tastes like it's from scratch. I highly recommend this place. Make a reservation. Note that if you make the reservation and don't show, it's $20 per person. I understand this in the time of covid.

Pan Seared Jumbo Scallops and Rock Shrimp Lunch

My husband and I ate here today on a day trip to Long Island during our vacation. I told the staff that in ten years of marriage this meal today at South Ocean Grill was in our top three restaurant meals. I was wrong. On the way home we tried to think of two other meals that came even close to this one, and we couldn't. We agreed that this meal was easily our favorite meal in ten years of marriage. My husband's risotto was creamy, the rice was not grainy, spinach was cooked to perfection. His scallops were perfect... and he is a scallops person, as well as a picky eater. He is usually disappointed in restaurant scallops... but not today. These scallops, he said, were perfect. The clam chowder was just clammy enough. My vegetable platter was gorgeous. The grilled flavors of the artichoke, corn, squash and potato were perfect. I ordered mulled wine to go with it and was not disappointed. Last night we ate at a far more expensive restaurant near a ski resort in the Catskills. The meal was good, but we will probably forget it. This meal will be a forever memory. The restaurant itself has an interior design that is simultaneously elegant and relaxed, perfect for a spontaneous lunch as well as a special occasion. The service was attentive but we still enjoyed our privacy. If we didn't live near Chicago, we would be back regularly. This restaurant is a real gem.

Doesn't look like a beet patty to me.

When we went here the bathroom was out of order. The waiter was nice to let us know when we arrived before getting us seated. Long story short we had to leave but went back because it was the only one open in the area. So I ordered a veggie burger without bun because they don't have a gluten free bun. According to the description it comes with a BEET patty. However when my order arrived, it was rice and beans with teriyaki glaze. I didn't complain because I actually like rice and beans. It's just not what I ordered or how I expected it to be. It looks like they tried to make a patty out of rice and beans that didn't form like patty. Taste ok. They also accommodate dogs in their outdoor patio. So we were sitting with a bulldog who kept on staring at us because it wanted some food.

Off…read morethe get go, customer service was great and offered a coat check free of charge for my jacket and umbrella since it was raining, definitely helped make it feel just a touch more upscale than your usual restaurant. Our wait staff was nothing but kind and patient with our moderately large party and checked up on us without being overbearing. Ambiance is very cool, and definitely leans into its classic and nostalgic feel of its name, but not in a campy way. If you bring a date here, they would be impressed by the nice tile and wooden features alone, but it's the food that is really going to blow them away, but we will get to that next. The menu and cocktails do rotate seasonally a bit, so your experience may vary on availability for some items, but if you come back often enough (and spoiler, you will want to), you'll see them comeback! We started with Caesar salad, calamari, and Korean fried wings with the easy standout being the fried wings, a bit spicy but delicious but buyer beware they are messy (don't worry though, they give you moist towelettes to clean yourself off), calamari was cooked exactly how it needed to be and not rubbery, and the Caesar salad was as good as I've had it anywhere (although there's was made with tahini, giving it a little sesame flair). For mains, we had a pesto pasta, steak frites with an au poivre sauce, with sides of jersey asparagus and mashed potatoes. Steak was cooked just right and I'd dip almost anything in that sauce, and the pesto pasta was a nice lighter and herby balance to the meal. Fries were perfectly crisp shoestring style and the other end of the potato spectrum was the delightfully smooth mashed potatoes and gravy. Asparagus has always been my favorite green, and adding a cream sauce with bacon only makes this version of it that much more enticing. Capping off with dessert, we had the chocolate Basque cheesecake, a brown sugar pie, and a pistachio cake. Choosing a favorite out of these is like choosing a favorite child I'm sure, but I am still craving more of that cheesecake, RUN do not walk to get that at the very least. Parking can be crazy in patchogue, there is a small attached lot and some street parking, but I'd advise using one of the municipal lots nearby and walking a little bit for your own sanity. One of my favorite dining experiences in patchogue to date, and will be happy to comeback here to try more of the menu for any occasion!

I've come here a couple times, mostly for happy hour since they have great specials on drinks and food during that time (a Sunday happy hour?? sign me up)! There's a rotating list of cocktails as well as the staples. Last time I got a potato chip martini of sorts, because why not, and it was actually super tasty! Brunch is also a good time to come with a limited menu so you're not overwhelmed with a little of everything on it. I tried the salmon caesear salad which was light with a nice dressing. We also tried the pancakes which were fluffy and delicious, as well as the steak and eggs (can't go wrong). Bottomless mimosas are also offered for $25 additional. I can't wait to do lunch/dinner here in the future.

On top of that, my damn car decided to up and die, so I've been bleeding money on Ubers just to get to and from work. I even had to go into work on my day off just to sit around waiting for the tow truck so they could junk it. Love that for me. After I handled business with the junkers, I said eff it and headed to Whiskey Neat. I was starving--no breakfast, running on fumes--and since my job's in Patchogue, I figured I'd finally try them for lunch. First of all... happy hour on a Saturday from 12-6?! Uhhh hello?? In my Angelina from Jersey Shore voice. And if you pay cash, you get the discount. Say less. They've got a fabulous small plates menu. I started with the French onion soup--ooey gooey mozzarella, cheese pull was undefeated. Soup was delicious too. I haven't had French onion in ages and it really hit. Then I had the pulled pork slider, which was really good, but BABY... those short rib croquettes? To. Die. For. I also had to get my classic deviled eggs. A little heavy-handed on the paprika, but still solid. Drinks were half off, so of course I indulged. Started with an espresso martini because I needed something to jumpstart my day. Then I had a French martini because duh--I'm a French girl ‍. That one was good. Finished with my classic cosmo. Not gonna lie, I've had better, but it did what it needed to do and helped me forget my troubles for a couple hours. Also great playlist of music. I got there and they were playing Ska. Love me some Reel Big Fish and No Doubt. Mixed with some Motown and Bob Marley. Made me remember the good old days.

I've been to Main Street Patchogue a few times before and I'm always amazed at how it's now like Huntington, with tons of eateries, bars and places to hear live music. It was a busy late Spring Friday night and my cousin told me if we were there just two weeks later (ie, post Memorial Day), there would have been lines to get in anywhere. So make resos! I made one easily earlier that day and when we arrived around 7:30, it was not packed, but it is pretty loud in there even half full. Our waiter, Jonathan, expertly took such great care of us from start to finish, even taking my father's dad jokes in stride. There's a solid cocktail menu, but I had a couple glasses of a better-than-decent prosecco. My cousin loved his espresso martini. For food, count on a couple respectable vegan entrees and I went with the Japanese eggplant with cashew ricotta. The eggplant is delicious, slightly sweet with a creamy rather than chewy (thank god) texture. The cashew ricotta is also tasty, but I do think it needed to be blended a bit more to remove the slightly grainy texture (the cashews might have needed more soaking). My father loved his French onion soup and pastrami sandwich. Separate paragraph for the fries. They deserve it. I'm glad we ordered these to share- it's an enormous platter of them. I appreciated that they were salted perfectly. I appreciate restaurants that can make satisfy a variety of preferences and dietary restrictions. The vibe here is festive and vibrant and a great choice for groups and families.
