It was okay, for what it was to us. Specifically, we each got their clam chowder ($9.25) in a bread bowl (+$2.50) and a bottle of water. The restaurant was pretty full when we arrived, but the line to get to the register to place our orders went pretty quickly. We were able to find a table for two towards the back of the restaurant, with a view over the street below and the Sound beyond that. The chowder was tasty - creamy and full of potatoes and clams, but I'm not sure it's worth the price tag (I mean come on, almost $10 for a bowl of soup? Fantastic view of the Puget Sound from a cafe tucked away down a ramp from the bustle of Pike Place Market, on the "main" level (re: Level 4, "street level" from Pine Street). In fact, if you walk under the colossal neon "Public Market" sign with the clock and keep going forward, you'll practically bee line right to it. Not sure how things were done pre-COVID, but currently, the Sound View operates a bit like a cafeteria, where you stroll up to the counter (past what looks like it was once a salad bar, in the Before Times) and order directly from the register. Laminated menus are provided for you, and a list of daily specials, including the Soup du Jour ("It's the soup of the day...", "Mmm...sounds good. I'll have that!") and some brunch cocktail standards. My wife ordered the clam chowder in a bread bowl, which I *should* have ordered, but instead went with the A1 Angus Burger...because I saw the word "A1", and that, along with "habanero", are basically guaranteed sales with me. The soup was served immediately, piping hot, creamy, savory and delicious, with some ludicrously-sized pieces of fresh clam within. My wife's only complaint was that some were large enough that they required some intense chewing, which is not something you generally want to experience with mussel-based foods, but it did not detract from the experience. My experience was a bit different. My burger took ~20 minutes to arrive, which seemed a bit long, as the cafe wasn't all that busy with special orders. The chowder was devoured, and the bread bowl M.I.A. before my dish had even arrived. A miscalculation on my part, but the wait did seem rather long for something that simple. I can slap together a burger in less time. As for the sandwich itself? Good, not incredible. The A1 saved it, and honestly, did taste like something I could/would make, so I won't sing its praised. It did the job, and I enjoyed it, but in hindsight, I should have ordered something else. Like that clam chowder! Come for the view, stay for the chowder and the bread bowl, and maybe a mimosa or Cranberry Zombie. I recommend sticking to things that can be served up immediately, instead of waiting for the grill. read more

FYI: If you're not getting soup, be prepared to wait on busy days. The first time I came here was around 1:30pm on a Saturday and my breakfast sandwich took upwards of 30 minutes. Pretty affordable old-school eatery conveniently located in Pike Place with a waterfront view. They're known for their soups and in addition to their clam chowder, they have daily seafood and veggie soup specials. Each soup can be ordered by itself or in a bread bowl. Tomato soup is also a permanent fixture of their menu but can only be ordered with a grilled cheese--would've been nice to have the standalone and bread bowl option for that as well. Even though soup is their speciality, I actually enjoyed the breakfast sandwich I had more than the clam chowder that I ordered on my second visit. The chowder was alright: a little bit too salty for my preference but there was a generous amount of clam bits. I got this as a standalone but it would have been better as a bread bowl; I had a bit of the sourdough from my friends bread bowl and the bread tasted complementary to the chowder. The breakfast sandwich was fairly standard with egg, tomato, and lettuce (I omitted the cheese), but the bread was toasted nicely and it paired well with the Tabasco it was served with. Both orders are around $8-$9, but the portion of the chowder is so small that I felt that the breakfast sandwich had more bang for buck. Regardless the menu is overall affordable considering the location and view. read more

The cashier seemed a little out of it, but a very nice person. They messed up our order and thought it belong to a different table. It's reminiscent of an old childhood haunt as it's low key and old school. I got the clam chowder which was delicious and saw other orders that looked good too. And it was so affordable!! It felt festive for the holiday on a rainy afternoon- and I was in heaven. The staff was so wonderful and guided me to find the light rail station to get back to the airport. It completed my journey and I was HAPPY! I have to say some of the comments on here are so snobby and it's a bummer. I am so upset and disappointed. We actually did not eat there. The food looked good but there was one woman who said we were not following the rules. Actually we were sitting with two kids and my daughter was in line and the old woman said you were not following the rule because we sat down before we ordered. I saw no sign. My daughter was in line and I was watching her two kids. The old woman then kept arguing and would not let up because this other nice couple should have sat there. By the way the place was not full. I was already there. She would not stop arguing and kept telling me to say I was wrong. We decided we did not want to give them our business and left. The portions are decent and will fill you up until about lunchtime. We did order bloody marys and let me tell you there were very lackluster and were missing so much flavor. Stear away from their drinks. Focus on the breakfast and you will be fine. One great thing is that you are able to see the water and the Ferris wheel from the table. It was about $60 just for breakfast but can't blame them with everything going up and this place being in the Pikes Market place which is very touristy. The views are great and are a highlight of this establishment. The restaurant has a fairly typical lunch and breakfast menu, where you pay at the counter and take a number to a table. The restaurant is fairly speedy, so there's decent turnover on the limited number of tables. The food itself was pretty basic and would be appropriate for the blandest of palates (based on the burger and salads we ordered), so it's not bad, but it's certainly not great either. Sound View Cafe is great when you just need a break from the bustle of the market, want a relatively quiet lunch, and a decent view of the water.
