I am so grateful for my experience at Life On Mars. It turned out to be the highlight of a tumultuous Seattle trip and I look back on it fondly. We came here mostly for one thing: I absolutely could not wait for their gluten-free vegan chick'n pot pie. A pie i'd been waiting months to try. A pie unlike any other pie. A pie that I still think about to this day. We walked straight into a Cardi B drag show. And by "walked into" I mean we opened the door and Hot Pink Shade sashayed right in front of us. It was exactly the kind of welcome we love. It was also the first green flag in a sea of green flags at Life On Mars. I could barely sit still as I waited to order my GF/VG pot pie. We got the drinks outta the way (a peach hard cider for me and a fancy-schmancy cocktail for the lady). I was positively GIDDY when Anna came to take our order and I blurted out chick'n pot pie excitedly. I nearly died when she said they didn't have any. Normally it wouldn't have been such a big deal, but I was from out of town and had literally been craving this damn pie for months! And I lied, I didn't nearly die but I DID nearly cry and that's almost as bad. Even the bestie lamented about what a let down this was. Anna. Dear, sweet Anna. We must have looked really hard up because this sweet baby angel offered to ask the cooks if they could whip one up special just for me. Let me tell you why this is a big deal: For one, she didn't need to do that. That's going above and beyond, and she was such a graceful little buttercup when she did it. Second, making a gluten free biscuit is a finicky, precise, detailed process. It sucks, honestly, and I don't blame them for not having them every day. I nearly cried when she came back and told us the cooks said YES. And this time i'm not lying. It was beyond the type of customer service i'm used to. It was.... humane. It was...empathetic. It was...totally first world problems but it meant so much to me! Especially since Anna said it had been a DAY and she was at her wits end. For her to have a rough day and still have the grace and compassion to make my stupid GF/VG chick'n pot pie dreams come true.....well, yeah, it made me a bit teary eyed. The pot pie was delicious, as expected. It was nostalgic and comforting, like a big hug in a bowl. The flavors were rich and deep, the biscuit soft and flaky; it was one of the most delicious things i've tasted on my GF/VEG journey. Between the food, the drinks, the customer service and the drag show......this was five stars all around. No doubt. I don't see the GF chick'n pot pie on their menu anymore. This is one of my favorite bars in all of Seattle. The atmosphere is incredible--great music, walls full of vinyl, and a vibe that feels both fun and welcoming. If you love music and supporting local artists, this is your place (they even showcase and sell local vinyl and more). The cocktails are great, the nonalcoholic options are actually great too, and the food is so good. It's all plant-based, and I'm not even vegan, but I still love eating here. It's just one of those spots that gets everything right: music, drinks, food, and atmosphere. read more

Come on now...a vinyl bar???? With fun drinks???? I'm there. On the outside, Life on Mars seems unassuming and you'd walk past it thinking it was like a shop. However, my boyfriend happened to see a bunch of vinyls inside and as soon as we opened the door we heard Dolly Parton streaming through the speakers. You can only come here if you're 21+ right at the door by the way! You have the choice to be seated at a regular table where you have to order their food, which is vegan based. They do a twist on dishes that are meat based, such as chicken being your classic buffalo wings but in this case make it cauliflower (yum!). We did come here for a few drinks and the vinyl bar though, so this review is mainly for the service and drinks. We got the Opener and Florida Beach. The opener tasted like juice with the green tea vodka mixture and elderflower...dangerous really. The Florida Beach was just alright. Not much of the drink as there was more ice cubes for looks? But it was kind of stronger than I anticipated with the description being pineapple shrub and lime. I guess blanco really hits you and I had no idea haha. The lady helping us in the beginning was friendly and accommodating. She even let us know where to sit and that they rotate albums that are chosen by customers on the speakers so that everyone gets a chance to share. I have had Life On Mars bookmarked into my list for I don't know how long. It felt like forever but finally, finally at long last I recently tried it. I am sure the name of the restaurant is a reference to the David Bowie song of the same name and there is evidence that there is a love for music here. Not only is this a restaurant but they are also a vinyl shop as well. They have a very fine selection of vinyl albums to purchase and that really makes this place cool! But not just that. The food is very good too. All of the food is vegan oriented and it's very good! I got a breakfast burrito that was great! Very flavorful and fresh. Steve's breakfast was very good as well but unfortunately I don't precisely remember the name of it. The time we were here was brunch time to early lunch but we got some cocktails as that is something that they are also known for. Very, very good drinks! Highly recommended! I really wanted to like this place. I've gone with friends who also wanted to support the local music industry, knowing the background of the ownership. I've gone four times, and reserved judgement, but the last experience was something I would want to hear about if I owned the business. I looked forward to having a good spot for cauliflower wings. First time I tried them, they were so big that the cauliflower was crunchy, barely cooked. I hoped it was an off day, but the second time was similar. I got other food another time, which I think was fine but was disappointed to learn they stopped having the more veggie burger style, and now only have Beyond burgers. I mean I get it for a meat restaurant, but a vegan spot should have something better, knowing that many vegetarians/vegans don't like meat, and prefer an actual veggie burger over a frozen fake meat burger you can get at any bar. Even a better frozen patty would be great. Last time . . . We asked about the cauliflower wings, mentioning the past experiences. Server acknowledged she knew about the issue, and they've been cutting the pieces smaller so they should be better cooked. Great! We were excited for this improvement. But this was the tipping point. They were still big enough to be barely cooked, but the worst was the batter inside wasn't cooked. Actual wet batter on the inside of the cauliflower. My friend agreed we should say something. The response was so embarrassingly bad . . . She said (almost exact words) "Yeah that's how we do it here." Neither of us knew how to respond. Actual uncooked batter in fried food, and she just unapologetically claims that's normal?! This is not normal, and the poor quality food was met with apathetic customer service. We agreed that was the last straw. We want to support vegetarian/vegan businesses, and the music industry connection, but there is a limit to how laughable the quality can be. There have to be standards for food and service. Vegan establishments get a lot of leeway because patrons want to see them succeed, but there is a limit on free passes. I like the decor and the concept. Hope they improve to be a place place I enjoy spending $. read more

Life On Mars is a hip place that I do dig, and the visits here have been pleasant overall, but there are some snags that just keep from where it should be for me. The ambience with the vinyls and the bar sitting in the middle is cool. My first visit was with friends on a nice day, we had some really nice drinks - "The Opener" - Green Tea infused Misguided Vodka, elderflower, lemon, soda goes down great on a summer day. So, I got a few rounds of those for my friends. Also got an order of the cauliflower bites to share which were ok, kind of expected more, perhaps should've got the "large" though the server said the small was shareable for 3. I recall our server disappearing for some time, so I went to the bar to order, we went to pay our actual server kind of caught an attitude when perhaps she didn't get the tip she was looking for further adding to my issue of the entitled and current wild tip climate but I'm not here to get on that box for this review. On a follow up visit My friend and I got brunch take out. I got the 'Bad Wolf breakfast sandwich - Sausage patty, Just Egg scramble, provolone cheese, spicy aioli on a grilled roll or between two waffles. I actually liked this and found the price was decent, my friend however was disappointed with her Benny and the Jets - "Choice of vegan poached or sunny side up Egg, vegan breakfast sausage avocado, spinach, mushrooms, and tomato, on an English muffin and topped with vegan house-made hollandaise sauce". She wasn't all that impressed with it. The biggest flaw for me though is the additional 20% on take-out orders. From what I understand it's for more "efficiency" but to me that just means code "just because". My friend loves it here, she likes the cool setting, the bathroom and is vegan. Overall, the vibes here are nice and found my food to be ok but the snags I mentioned are a real drag for me. If anything, I'd be cool coming through for a couple of "Openers" while 'hopping' around Cap Hill, but parts of my experiences here didn't leave as good a taste for me. read more

It was nice to have a meal where everything didn't weigh like a ton of bricks in your stomach. Service was great, even for a large crowd I had. I would recommend going there early (4pm open) for a big crowd, since it looked like it could get busy towards the end of day. Vibes was what this place gets this place above the others around town. The vinyl and the uniquely indie vibes in the place is highly recommended, and almost encompasses what Seattle/ Cap Hill is all about. Finally tried Life on Mars recently and we really enjoyed our visit. I tried the taco salad with the vegan ground beef which was fairly basic but was tasty and filling. My husband tried the phish n chips. He enjoyed it, especially the fries which were quite delicious. Our favorite thing that we ordered were the fried Brussels sprouts. Both of us are Brussels sprouts connoisseurs and we thought they were fantastic. Rounded out our visit with tiramisu for dessert which was good as well. Service was friendly and the vibes were good. From the street, Life on Mars projects the kind of effortless cool that suggests a thoughtful cocktail program and a well-curated atmosphere inside. Unfortunately, the welcome does not live up to the façade. Upon opening the door, we were met not with hospitality, but with hostility. The host immediately demanded to know our intentions and informed us, in a tone that felt more admonishing than informative, that a drink would require a 20-25 minute wait--while physically positioning himself in a way that blocked the entrance. This might have been understandable had the space been at capacity, yet multiple seats at the bar sat visibly open. For a cocktail bar--where ambiance and warmth are as integral to the experience as the spirits themselves--the first interaction sets the tone. At Life on Mars, that initial moment felt unnecessarily confrontational. A venue that trades on atmosphere and curated experience should recognize that hospitality begins at the door. read more

I've been here a few times before, but most recently met up with a friend for some after work food and drink. Service is always attentive, even right from the start where there's a host at the front entrance. The menu is fully vegan which is the top reason I drive from the Eastside to go here. Burgers, nachos, and a few entree options highlight the menu alongside some food&drink combos. On Fridays and Saturdays, which are when I've historically gone, the crowd is lively and the bar and tables are full. Expect to wait for a spot to sit on these evenings. Another great find Vegan spot in Capitol Hill. So far the best in terms of ambience and service. It has more of a bar/pub theme so food is more like of American Fusion. But they are so so good. Highly recommended for casually hanging out or even as a date spot. If you really want to taste everything just go for Mars Platter/Sampler. I can't believe it took me so long to try Life on Mars. It always looks so stylish from the street, with a wall full of records, loungy chairs, rounded booths. I went with friend during HH and learned that you can browse records (which are also for sale) and bring them up to the bar for them to play. They'll play a full side. It was really nice to eat, drink, and chat with friends while music you enjoy is playing! The HH prices are great. I believe the menu is full vegetarian. They have excellent cauliflower wings, and despite being fairly plain, I really enjoyed the sliders, and I'm not vegetarian. The Dark Entries cocktail was good, really interesting. I'd get it again to determine how much I actually like it. It had the booziness of a manhattan, a touch of sweetness like an old fashioned, and some bitterness like a vieux carre. It seems having TV's in a place where the vibe is music and atmosphere would really clash, but honestly, I was glad they had them. It allowed me to get away and watch the game while my friends geeked out about something else. Something for everyone. I noticed a review depicting the staff as stressed and grumpy during a crowded night, but I found everyone kind and patient. My only reservation is about the food, and believing it should look a little more appetizing on presentation. But overall, this place just seems like a really cool hang, and I can imagine coming back to spin records, watch games, or just chill with great cocktails and bites. read more

Life on Mars is hands down the restaurant we missed the most after many a date night there. When we came back to Seattle to get married we KNEW we had to go back here. BOOK THE VINYL ROOM. The food was plentiful, delicious, and oh so reasonable for a couple who was already well beyond their budget. Our server, Anna, was chill and patient as can be. Holy peter, paul, and bloody mary! I think I have found my favorite bloody mary. The tomato juice mix is delicious and the alcohol content strong. I had a good ole' time here on a Saturday, where I bopped along to the music, and enjoyed a nice crispy fried cauliflower atop a belgian waffle. And my bloody mary was the fabulous (metaphorical) cherry on top. The brunch menu is available on Sat and Sun between opening and 4pm. This also means the regular menu is not available at that time. Is there Life on Mars? I think the jury is still out on that question, but there is certainly a lot of life in this little gem of a restaurant and bar! We loved it! We were greeted first by a wall of vinyl when we entered the joint. What a selection of music! Want music while you gnosh or drink, come on in! If you're looking for a great vegan restaurant and bar, you have found it! Everything is vegan, including the drinks (for example, no drinks with egg whites). And speaking of drinks, what a selection! We happened upon Life on Mars after an event in the area, and came in just for drinks. Plenty of seats on a Wednesday evening, and the staff were courteous and friendly, getting us seated quickly at a cozy little table for 2 at the back of the restaurant. My date ordered the Stoli Blueberry, and I the Margarita (with well tequila). She also had never had a radler before, and they let us try a sample of a great one that was Grapefruit based. For the life of me, I thought I had reviewed this place before, and realized I haven't. This is a belated review... we go here regularly, and LOVE it. LoM is a vegan restaurant, brunch place, and cocktail and mocktail bar, and they also have a vast vinyl record place. Being in Capitol Hill, they're primarily visited by what we like to say as "the youth," and are of course LGBTQ+ friendly. However, as olds and straights, I can truthfully say that we've never not felt welcome, and I may be giving up our secret here, but they serve a mean brunch, and are always quiet during brunch hours. Life on Mars call themselves a cocktail bar, and I can indeed vouch for that. I went with a friend pre-pandemic and the place was hoppin'. However my partner and I have been to dinner here, and we visit with vegan friends for monthly Sunday brunch, and I can say that their food is AWESOME and their nonalcoholic cocktails are SUPERB. I'd actually go as far to say that they are the best mocktail joint in Seattle, and are easily one of the best vegan restaurants in the area. While quiet during brunch hours, LoM gets lively starting at dinner time, and once you hit 8 or 9 pm on the weekend, they are busy. Which totally makes sense. I'd recommend reservations for dinner, but don't let that deter you from going. On to the food. Totally underrated for Seattle. It leans more towards the casual end of things as opposed to fine dining, with things like faux burgers, tacos, etc. For dinner we'll usually gorge on something like their nachos and cauliflower wings, although I do love their Brussels sprouts. Their brunch thought has to easily be the best vegan brunch in the area. Two words -- "Yo Egg." I think they're the only place in Seattle that serves this. Yo Egg comes in two varieties, poached and sunny side up. Both are incredibly realistic looking; the "yolk" runs when the "egg" is pierced. Frankly, if you haven't tried a Yo Egg yet, that is reason alone to visit for brunch. I'm very partial to their "Florentine & The Machine Breakfast Bowl" and their "Benny & The Jets," and slightly prefer the latter although both are similar. I'll read from their online menu because it's hard to describe. "Benny & The Jets" is "choice of vegan poached or sunny side up Yo Egg , vegan breakfast sausage avocado, spinach, mushrooms, and tomato, on an English muffin and topped with vegan house-made hollandaise sauce." "Forentine & The Machine" is "vegan poached Yo Egg, avocado, spinach, mushrooms, tomato, potatoes, topped with vegan house-made hollandaise sauce." So you can see they're pretty similar. My partner typically gets "Chick'N Waffles," which is cauliflower "chicken" with vegan waffles -- the latter are tough to get in Seattle. Sometimes she just gets a side of a vegan pancake or two and vegan breakfast sausage if she's not feeling overly hungry. On to the drinks... while I don't drink any more, I can say that their nonalcoholic cocktails are EPIC. Seriously easily the best I've had in Seattle, and rivals anything I've had anywhere. I want to say that Life on Mars was one of the first places to serve Pathfinder, the NA version of an amaro. (OK, just checked out ChatGPT, which says that Pathfinder debuted at Life on Mars, which is awesome.) LoM's Pathfinder Spritz -- on the brunch menu -- is amazing. As is their Pathfinder Negroni. I feel so often that mocktails are more like runny smoothies; if someone told you what you were drinking was a smoothie, you wouldn't disagree. But LoM's mocktails are next level, and made with the care and sophistication usually found only with alcoholic drinks created by a mixologist. (Now that I think about it, there was another place that rivaled LoM. But it's in Seoul, Korea.) Some final words about their vinyl collection. It's huge. A lot (most? all?) you can buy. I think there's some type of membership club where you get to select what's playing. I fully admit that I'm intrigued by vinyl, although never have made the plunge (we don't even own a CD or DVD player). But one of the friends we do vegan brunch with says their collection is amazing. At a minimum, to me as an old, it looks amazing. Anyway, with that I'll end my review. You can tell I'm pretty passionate about this place. I've read some 1-star reviews of this place, and frankly don't get them at all. I do understand food and drink are very subjective, though, so I don't want to discount their opinions. But as denizens of Seattle (Belltown), I can say that this is our favorite vegan spot in the city, and the place we recommend to visitors who are vegan. read more

There really is Life on Mars! I was super excited to stop in here for dinner and cocktails with coworkers as I was in town for a work conference. I had been wanting to come here since John and his wife opened up the spot after the height of the pandemic. As an avid listener of KEXP I hear all about the cool happenings here weekly with DJ's and curated playlists at happy hours. So of course when I was town I had to stop in. First of all the atmosphere here is so dreamy for me as a record collector. I loved the art on the walls and over the large booth nearest the wall of records. Seeing the wall of records was mesmerizing and makes my record collection back at home pale in comparison. There are so many records you can choose from to have the staff play it overhead if you make it in time for happy hour (which is daily I believe). Even the hostess stand is a refurbished record player that was just super cute and classic looking. Service was attentive and we always had eyes on our drinks and food as we spent our dinner here. When we asked to move (so we could be closer to the wall of records) our waiter was cool with it and helped us move our tab over to that section. Food was fantastic. I opted for the LoM house made classic "cheese"burger and fries with their special aioli sauce. Oooo...it was perfect! My coworkers had the cauliflower wings and they smelled so delicious from the other side of the table. Loved the cocktail coasters that had John Richards' slogan that I felt and heard the most during the pandemic in 2020 - You Are Not Alone. Next time I am in Seattle I will definitely be back and make it a point to come during happy hour so I can play some riot grrl tunes. read more

All Vegan! A+ for this. The food was amazing. We had TONS. Cauliflower wings, disco fries, a Chkn burger, Chkn Caesar wrap, Brownie with ice cream. All great options. You will be miserable trying all the foods. Staff were amazing. Never felt neglected. Super friendly and informative on options. The Strange Magic is the Panda drink. Very much tasted like a pineapple soda. The Pink Opaque was good, but wouldn't have been my first choice. Glad the waitress suggested. I like to try new things that aren't terrible. We didn't get to see the music wall or swap songs. The music choices were what we like and we were fine with it. It would have been a cool option to play with the music. Bathrooms are very unique. Life on Mars is a bar in Capitol Hill that offers chill lounge vibes. It's close walking distance to the light rail which is convenient for transportation wise! We went with a huge party on a Saturday night and were fortunately seated. However, they made an exception for us so it's definitely recommended to reserve a table if you're coming with a large group! Our server was very prompt to greet us and was very sweet and patient! She was more than happy to provide recommendations and was also very fun to talk to. We came right before happy hour, which has great deals for some of their drinks! We ended up getting the Trust Fall and CREAM punch. The trust fall comes in the cutest panda cup and is definitely more of a tropical citrus vibe. The CREAM punch was like an upscale jungle juice drink. It's definitely strong but also so unique. All the drinks offered here are stronger so depends on your palette! We also tried their fries which were a great snack to enjoy with our drinks! Overall I do recommend checking out Life on Mars if you get the chance to! Really love this 100% vegan bar! My friend and I walked in and were impressed to see they have a full record display on the back wall that you can purchase records from. We came for the drinks - they have a variety of different kinds of unique brands and spirits to try, so I tried the bartender I had's special. Really good - Smooth not too sweet and slightly lemony (I think her name was Vern?) Classic burger - was great! I have never tried a motif patty but I'd say it's similar to an impossible burger! Carrots and cauliflower side - it's one of their small shareable normally, but she subbed this side for their fries or salad options for a slight upcharge. Flavorful and well seasoned! I recommend doing this for a good portion without having to pay for another dish! Sriracha aioli - eh, I would pass on this personally. Didn't taste authentic, tasted slightly nutty/rubbery but they had the texture right, but it's really cool they have so many options of dips available! Everyone was really nice, I'd say the theme inside is like a retro 80s. Would definitely return! read more

Make sure to go during happy hour! I feel like the food was a little pricey, but I can't judge much because I ordered the disco fries which was $15 and an additional $3 charge for beyond meat crumbles. I felt like the portion wasn't worth it. However, I like the vibes with being able to select a record to listen too. And, the servers were very attentive. The espresso martini was delicious! $15 for a solid cocktail. If you wait until happy hour though, the margarita is $10. Worth it! The bathroom is also fun! Great decor and ambiance! read more

I highly recommend this bar. Haven't been there in a long time since moving out of Cap Hill but it's just as good as I remember it to be. I'm not a vegan but enjoy the food here. In my experience, people can't even tell the food is vegan. For example, the fried cauliflower is covered with something that is indistinguishable from animal-based cheese. The drinks are interesting and strong (and changed since the last time I was there). The music is great and you can even ask for a vinyl be played. They currently offer a way to reserve a corner of the room, which was great for our party of 12. Staff is very friendly. It seemed easy enough to get a seat on a Saturday night. read more
