After trying Lowell's (which can be great, but which is also inconsistent), and The Athenian (which is awful), I decided to stop in at the Sound View Cafe. First, the place seems immaculate. Second, the staff are welcoming, and eager to explain options. I settled on smoked salmon hash with eggs, plus a bowl of chowder. The chowder was surprisingly good. The salmon in the hash was adequate, and the eggs and potatoes were cooked well, but the presentation was so sloppy, and the flavor, well, everything was under-seasoned. The staff were helpful with packaging leftovers. The view of the Sound was nice. I just wish the food had been more flavorful. Still I will probably return just to see what a second visit has to offer. read more

Oh sound view...we could have had something special. I wish I could give them a better review but I only ordered fries. My review isn't bad because the food was bad it's because they forgot my order. After waiting fifteen minutes for fries they still never came. There wasn't even anyone working anymore or cooking so we asked them about the fries and they said they were still cooking. That's about the moment the guy ran to the back to start cooking them and cmon we can see you cooking them. No apologies no nothing just here's your fries. The problem with this place is it has a great view, and it is located in the biggest tourist attraction in Seattle; so if they treat you like trash, there's always another tourist. We used to be regulars until one day the waitress took our order but the food didn't arrive. I flagged down the waitress FOUR TIMES and was told 'I checked and its coming' - well, after one and a half hours, she had to admit she had been lying and our order was lost. No apology - and when she snapped at me for demanding an explanation, I asked for the manager. Did he fix the problem?? No - we left, and he charged us for the coffee we drank over the two hours of waiting. So - enjoy the view. Just remember, you're tourist cattle to these people. You're not going to get a view and a meal in Seattle for less than it is here ($17). I had the salad bar and a roll and he had half a chicken sandwich and some chow-DAH. My salad was decent and he devoured his sandwich. The staff here is friendly and efficient and the food is served promptly. I used to make it a point to come here when I'd visit Seattle years and years ago before I moved out here. They had this breakfast special for $4 -- eggs, toast, and home style potatoes all for like $4. Add coffee and you had a wonderful (if not standard diner fare) meal for a stupidly cheap price. Alas, the days of cheap specials are gone and I find the menu mostly lacking these days. Their toast is pretty good, but I account that to the quality of the bread used -- not the skill it took to make it a little crunchy. The eggs always seem bland no matter how I order them, and the coffee could stand to be a lot stronger. The service has always been aloof, self serve coffee, grab your own silverware, bus your own table sort of affair. Not saying the folks here are not nice, you just don't interact with them much aside from placing your order and paying. That said -- most days you have a little oasis in the market with Sound View. I've seen it packed, but personally have never been when it was even busy. A respite from the masses, with one killer view of Elliot Bay. So an extra star is earned for the mere fact that I can drink a weak, but albeit warm cup of coffee and take a break from reality and enjoy many of the reasons why Seattle is just so damn beautiful. read more

High price for low quality. Plus they're thieves. I was charged for the wrong item because the woman that took my order had terrible hand writing. Then the cashier decided to charge my friend more to make up for mischarging me. He said I could pay my friend the difference. We waited 25 minutes for our sandwiches. When the food arrives they were thrown in front of us. I asked for silverware, and the waitress pointed to the other side of the room and said "it's over there." It felt like I was in some cafeteria. Pike Place Market can be a little overwhelming at peak tourist time, and finding grub on the main concourse can be one helluva challenge when the place is teeming with people. The Sound View Cafe is hidden away in the southwest corner of the market, and sports one of the best views of the Puget Sound for your dollar in the city. Two pieces of advice for the unitiated: 1. If you're in a group bigger than four, don't bother if it's busy. 2. Go for breakfast. It's much quieter during the morning hours, and there's nothing like a hot cup of coffee and that view. We found this little cafe buried in the bowels of Pike Market. We were planning on catching the Ferry over to Bainbridge Island but I needed to get some food in my belly pronto. GF asked a pasta vendor where we could find some breakfast food and she pointed us toward...the lower level. There's nothing fancy about Sound View Cafe--except that view. We were lucky enough to be visiting Seattle on a crystal clear, blue sky day. The view of the Sound and the snow-capped peaks on the other side was nothing short of spectacular. I ordered the Salmon hash with eggs and I recommend it highly. GF got the French toast and her breakfast was almost as good as mine. We decided to eat at Sound View Café for dinner because of the beautiful view. The café is located inside Pike's Place Market where people were selling shirts, flowers, jewelry, etc. We were seated and since we were snacking throughout the day trying different food items, we weren't that hungry. I ordered the salad and soup and a local Seattle beer, the naughty Nellie. There was a salad bar and I was very happy to see fresh vegetables out. The soup and salad combo is one trip to the salad bar and a large bowl of either clam chowder or salmon chowder for $10. The clam chowder was creamy and very tasty with chunks of clams and potatoes. My salad was refreshing and very fulfilling. My sister ordered the salmon chowder which I thought was better than the clam chowder! Think clam chowder but it's red with chunks of salmon! One downfall: they ran out of bread which was really lame because uncle really wanted bread with his soup so he went on a journey to find bread so we had something to dip into our soup! If there's a place to get seafood on the west coast, it's definitely in Seattle. This cafe was located in Pike's Place and I thought everything inside had to be good. After all, Pike's Place is widely known for their good stuff....right? Not this place. Their menu had little seafood to offer and whatever seafood items they did have were below sub-par. The calamari appetizer looked disgusting. It was a disgrace to calamari appetizers in restaurants around the world. The calamari, itself, had little taste to offer. It was drowned in a pool of soupy sauce that didn't even taste that great. The garlic bread that was served with it had too much butter with not even flavor. How that happened I have no idea. Usually there is more flavor when there is more butter. This wasn't the case. You can tell they put a lot on the bread because there was a deep layer of yellow on the surface. I saw the butter but where was the flavor? They probably didn't even use real butter. For my entree, I ordered the Crab Burger. It was another disappointment. The texture of the crab patty was similar to that of baby food. It easily fell apart and was mushy. It tasted more like a spread you put on your crackers after buying it from the grocery store. $15 for this? No thanks. It was such a big let down. For the price you pay for the quality of food, it's such a rip off. Basically, you're just paying for the view outside- which isn't really that amazing. Half of the view is the roofs of buildings that are blocking the way. I recommend you find somewhere else to eat. read more

Get there on a weekday or really early to grab a window seat or just wait a bit and one will eventually open up. The weekend mornings are extremely busy. My boyfriend and I walked in here after deciding to go down to Pikes Place for breakfast. Our original plan was to just eat from a street vendor, but these places were surprisingly rare for healthy eats, so we walked downstairs and noticed this little cafe. We sat down and took off our coats after grabbing a menu. We decided what we wanted and then we waited. And waited... and waited. finally, we saw someone else come in and order at the front, so we realized you have to go up to the counter to order. Woops! I ordered a vegetarian omelette and asked for no cheese and egg whites instead of reg. eggs. I was pleased that this was no problem. Our food came out in about 15 minutes..not too bad of a wait, and we had plenty of view to take in in the meantime. My omelette tasted really good, although it was a tad bit greasy. They definitely give you a lot to eat (which we were glad of because it was about $10 apiece). The guy working was really friendly and it was a cool little cafe atmosphere. I've been to this place two times...the first time, I don't really remember. I think I got chicken strips years ago and you can't really screw that up...so. I was up visiting from Portland for the weekend and it was very quiet (the market had just opened) so we stopped by for some breakfast. It's obviously a sustainable kind of restaurant, so it has organic/healthy foods. They only had turkey meat products for breakfast. Yuck. Picky eater, but I had it anyway. It was flavorless...and I know that's not usually the case because I've had flavorful turkey bacon before. I had french toast, and it was also flavorless. Eggs were dry. Portions are pretty small for the price ($10 for two eggs, two french toast, and two bacon/sausage)...plus tax, which EEK...I'm not used to paying! Views are great, food was not so great. The cashier didn't even greet me, before asking what I wanted, and this was while my sister was still paying for her meal. The waitstaff who brought out my food didn't even say anything, either. The cafe is way too fucking small for Pike Place Market. There were about 35 seats in the cafe, which is inside Pike Place Market, an attraction that attracts about 4,000 visitors per day. As well, there is only one cashier stand, and the salad bar is placed such that the salad bar-goers have to share a space with the people in the ordering line, and you can imagine how that works out. The food takes way too fucking long. I waited about 30 minutes for my meal from the time I ordered. Yes, I like talking with the other people I go with. Yes, I like looking at the ferries coming and going. Yes, I like going to restaurants. No, I did not have sex with that woman. Yes, I think that a cheeseburger and fries should take about 20 minutes. I had a lovely, quiet, late Thursday afternoon here. Is was warm and dry and besides the two guys discussing wall street like they were straight out of American Psycho it was a great place. I got the traditional clam chowder in a bread bowl and in my opinion I LOVED it! The bread was soft and fresh, the chowder too! I went to the counter to order my food and completely missed the "Be seated and your server will be with you" So just know that option is there. And to the people who had to wait for 30 minutes for their food just keep in mind this is Pike Place Market. It's a busy place. People from all over the world come here. In the middle of my delicious meal I realized I had forgotten an important item in my room and had to run and get it. Alex, was kind enough to HOLD IT for me. I was so embarrassed by my predicament of wanting to come back to a restaurant for half eaten food but so pleased that Alex treated it like no biggie. one thing for sure is that this place provides a good view of the harbor. the place has limited space though, so if you want to eat here better arrive early for lunch or a bit late in the afternoon. we ordered the clam chowder, shrimp cocktail and seafood platter. the clam chowder was average...we still prefer the chowder at pike's. the shrimp cocktail was good and the size of the shrimp was big. the seafood platter was good too! the platter is consists of seared salmon, crab cake, shrimps, and it also comes with rice and veggies....good for two people at least. the place has good customer service. every one was pleasant. read more

My boyfriend and I flew into Seattle for the weekend to visit friends and we decided we would fly in early and take the train right into Pike Place Market before meeting up with others. With our backpacks on our back we came to Sound View Cafe which had a GREAT view of the sound and the food was great. We MAY have been super hungry too, but I enjoyed my cafe ole and my egg breakfast. Only had the crab cake burger. It was pretty awful. The description given was of a pile of crab with a little breading on the outside. I was hard pressed to find any crab lumps.
