My cousin suggested we visit her as our Nanny was born and raised in England. She always loved a good pasty, and we wanted to honour her memory with a pasty! As she would say, "Be rude not to." Upon entering we were greeted immediately and noticed it was an order at front then seat yourself kind of location. Not my favorite, but also reminded me of some of the small shops we visited in England. For vegetarians/vegans, you will want to call ahead. I didn't realize and only had one option, which was full of onions which I don't tolerate well. Either way, it was a decent pasty though the crust was a little dry. My cousin said her's was good, but nothing crazy. We may be a bit biased of the nostalgia of having with our Nan but it's a great local place!

I was excited to try Sonsons Pasty Company as the pasty is close to my heart. Had to stop in with Diele K to honor our heritage. Upon approaching the location, there is a nice, large patio out front. When we entered the building, we were greeted. The menu is on display and you place your order at the front and pay. Once the order is complete, you can walk up and grab it from the employee at the front. This is a very casual dining experience. The walls of the location is decorated with lots of fun things to look at. I enjoy the type of decor as it reminds of my Nanny's house growing up. The menu has a variety of filling options and the option for vegetarian if you order ahead. They also offer take and bake. I ordered the cottage pie pasty ($10). The pasty is served on disposable plate with disposable silverware. It was good but not my favorite. The crust was a little dry and the gravy was very loose. If I returned, I would try a pasty with a different filling. I think it was worth the stop in, but I would not go out of my way to come back.

Sonsons is a small pasty shop tucked in the corner of a shopping complex, you probably wouldn't notice it from the street. It had a lovely little makeshift patio set up outside and inside a cozy dining area and counter to order. The family each picked a pasty to go as well as a freezer pack for lunches. I had the steak special for August. It didn't have a ton of steak, but between the vegetables, crust, and gravy, I was satisfied. My daughter got a cottage pie, which was stuffed with ground beef, potatoes, and mixed vegetables. We're looking forward to going back for more.

Ground beef pasty. - A partially eaten meat and potato pasty with a golden-brown crust, filled with meat and potatoes, is placed on a black tray. A small plastic container of gravy accompanies the pasty. The tray is on a white table, with a background that includes a white surface and some indistinct objects. The image captures the food in a casual dining setting.

Sonson's has been on my radar for a while. This is a small little cafe that specializes in Cornish Pasties. As a mater of fact that's about all they do. Pronounced (pass-tee), a pasty is a small baked pie resembling a calzone. Traditionally they were made by the wives of Cornish miners for their lunch. With a few small tables inside, and a couple outside Sonsons is geared for take out. With about a dozen different pasties to choose from I wanted the traditional pasty. This is a pie pastry filled with steak, potatoes, onions, and rutabaga, baked to golden brown perfection, served with brown gravy. I have only had a pasty in upper Michigan and parts of Wisconsin that have a history of mining. The pasties here are the real deal. Unfortunately the traditional pastys were sold out, but there were a few left in the warmer. Rather than waiting 35 minutes for a fresh traditional, I chose the ground beef pasty with the difference being it is made with ground beef instead of steak. This pasty did not disappoint. It was just like the ones I've experienced in the midwest. I can now get an authentic pasty in my own neighborhood. Next time I will call ahead so I can get the one I want without the wait.

Steak Pasty

Updating my review after trying Sonson's again about 10 days ago. I ordered via DoorDash for lunch. I picked two pasties, one chicken pot pie and one steak. Both arrived nice and warm with a warm gravy on the side to go with them. They were delicious (steak just a tad bit on the saltier side for my preference) and they were big enough that I ate only a half each and saved the rest for later. Prices are good for what you get. Will be retuning more frequently for sure. We love delicious options that are close to our home!

I love the pasties from Sonson's more widespread competitor, and these pasties seemed to have more of a traditional flair to them so when I was in the area I figured let's try them out for lunch! Unfortunately, unless you have around 30 minutes to 1 hour+ to spare for lunch you're SOL for a quick meal. I called to place a to go order and most of their pasties at noon were either premade and cold or frozen. Some of the meaty ones I wanted would take 30 minutes to cook in their oven and the frozen veggie medley would take an hour because it was frozen. Hmmmm well I'll just take them home and heat them up myself then. They did have some pasties in the oven baking but those would be 20 minutes, still a bit too long for me to wait at the moment. The shop is in a not-too-busy strip mall area and occupies a corner spot away from the main street. They've converted part of their parking spaces to an outdoor patio so when it gets cooler or in the morning/evening dining al fresco might be a nice option. The shop inside is a bit small and most of the space is devoted to the kitchen and pasty storage. For your reference, the cold pasties bake at 350 F for 30 minutes. As for the frozen pasties, the instructions are as follows (From their website): - Remove wrapping. - Preheat oven to 450℉. - Place frozen pasty on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. - Bake at 450℉ for 15 minutes, then turn down to 350℉ and bake for 45 minutes. - Remove from oven. The pasty is hot, so let it sit for five minutes. We know this is the hardest step, but it is worth the wait. There was a container of gravy included with each pasty but those were frozen solid which made thawing them out a bit of an interesting challenge. I got the traditional steak, green chile chicken, and vegetable medley. I asked the toddler when we got home, do you want steak or chicken? My budding food critic answered promptly "'TAYK!" But then she had a tired toddler tantrum so off she went in her bed for a nap. Don't worry I saved her half for when she woke up! The steak pasty was done just as expected in 30 minutes according to the instructions. The exterior was nice n flaky, with a super buttery flavor. The steak was tender and the potato+ rutabaga was shredded. It was full flavored with salt and pepper but on the verge of being too salty for me but I'm more salt sensitive than other people. The gravy went well with the pasty. I really enjoyed the green chile chicken pasty. The flavors were spot on and it was just the right amount of spiciness for me. I'd get this again! I haven't tried the veggie medley yet. It's still nestled in my freezer but I look forward to heating it up next time I'm in a pasty kind of mood!

I ate half of it before taking the picture lol

My husband stopped by for a bite and he picked us up two for dinner!! My favorite dinner (one I don't have to cook) you can stop by for fresh hot food or you can pick up their take and bake. They come frozen so you can pick up a few! We popped them in the oven for and they came out so golden and flaky! He got the steak and potato and I prefer meatless so he picked me up potato and onion! It was so flavorful and the filling was so good! They heat up beautifully and it makes a great dinner! They make fruit pies as well and I am sad we didn't pick one up because this crust is so good!

Reservations were easy to make online and were confirmed quickly but beware that your confirmation email might get filtered into your spam folder which is what happened to mine. Our table was ready and waiting for us. We had the afternoon tea for three which included a varied selection of finger sandwiches, sweet treats, and scones. Two pots of tea are included and we chose the pudding tea and the gingerbread tea. Both teas were delicious and the gingerbread tea was nice in that it's caffeine free. All the food selections were fresh and fantastic. I would venture to say that I liked the food selections even more than at the previous location! While this new spot isn't as lavish as the golf resort it was previously at, the interior is still charming. Service was very friendly and we were checked on as needed.

Dear Mark C., I…read morefound the Quirky Royal Tea Room on YELP, however I pray that the commumity won't risk their health by eating at your restaurant. I came to your so called Tea Room on Dec. 14, 2025, with two of my dear friends to celebrate a birthday. It started out with us having a terrible time just finding your location. There is absolutely no signage on your store front and its very apparent that you must be struggling, due to your choice of being in a very run down strip mall. You say on your Yelp site that your Tea Room is classy, however, what we walked into was not the case at all. I would say it's very "tacky ". And, what is very interesting is that most of the pictures on the Yelp app. are a misrepresentation of your Tea Room. It doesn't look anything like where we were expecting. Except, for the pictures with the pink walls. What a disappointment for my myself and my friends birthday celebration. The food appeard to be all store bought, even though you say you have a baker on site. That is really hard to believe, based on what we experienced. The tea wasn't even warm and and what else surprised me was that the napkins were paper and the water cups were plastic. Yet, here's the aweful part, we had to rush one of my friends to the hospital. Approximately half-way through our meal, one of my friends had to be rushed away due to a sudden and horrible stomach ache, severe pains, a complete loss of facial color, and she could no longer sit in her chair. All she wanted to do was to lay down. We almost called 911, not knowing what was happening. It was that bad. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, she was diagnosed by an emergency room doctor with a case of food poisoning. It was confirmed that she hadn't eaten anything so far that day, except the food items at the Tea Room. She ultimately had a stomach ache and cramps for almost a week, following this incident. Just a few days later, our birthday girl also went to the hospital ER with stomach cramps, and ultimately had to spend 3 days in the hospital herself. In a later conversation between the 3 of us, we recalled that two us had in fact eaten the same lunch meat sandwiches. I did not eat these sandwiches and never felt these ill symptoms. Once my friends felt better, we went to talk to yourself, since you were confirmed to be the manager in charge. We made you aware, Mark C., that we in fact had documentation from the ER doctor that our friend had food poisoning from her only meal that day. Upon presenting our situation with Mark C. in a very calm and polite manner, explaining to him our experience that particular day, we simply wanted him to refund our $130 spent for that meal that day. At this moment in time, she hadn't even mentioned the cost for the ER hospital visit. It was only our intention to recover the cost of the meal. Shortly after our initial meeting with Mark, he became very rude to us. He kept insisting that there is no way she could have received food poisoning from this restaurant, saying that it takes a full 24 hours for symptoms to occur. In doing some research, this is what I found: "Food poisoning can strike from as quickly as 30 minutes (like with Staphylococcus aureus toxins) to several days or even weeks later (like Listeria or Cyclospora), depending on the germ or toxin, with common bacteria like Salmonella or E. coli often causing symptoms within hours to a couple of days. Viruses like Norovirus usually appear within 12-48 hours". Shortly after, in the same conversation, Mark told us to take him to court, to which we were very shocked that a manager and business owner would respond to us in the manner. It was at this time that we suggested we may report him to the Board of Health and let them sort this out. We simply wanted our money back and then we would then leave without so much nonsense. There absolutely was no bargaining with you Mark C, or the big words you seem to like to throw around like extortion and blackmail. All over $130. Shame on this man!

With several locations in Phoenix, this one was closest so we made our way and didn't have any trouble parking in their complimentary lot. Ambiance (5/5): I loved the vibe. Think of it as a pub with a lot of character. There's wallpaper on the walls which you don't expect at an English pub. But it works. There's seating at the bar, high tops, and tables/booths. They also have two pool tables. Cool decor abounds, including some cool pictures a flag of the area in England where pasties were invented. Service (4.5/5): While they weren't packed while we were there, there were a good number of people hanging out. Our waiter did a good job of taking care of us. He checked in with us regularly and closed us out efficiently when we were ready to make a move. He also repeated our orders to make sure they were right, which is always a nice touch. Drinks (4.5/5): While they have a full bar, when I'm at a pub, I'm thinking about beer. They have a good beer list consisting of both European beers and craft brews. I went with a Bavik pils. Their beers are reasonably priced too, which is always a big plus in my book. Given that they're a pub, I wish they had a larger menu, but outside of that, exactly what I was looking for. Food (4.5/5): If you're like me, you probably have never had a pasty. Or heard of them. If that's the case, you're in for a treat. Think of pasties as essentially British empanadas. They were invented in England and the menu gives you a nice history of how they came about. Most of the menu consists of these delectable pies. You have 30 or so of them to choose from (including vegetarian options). Outside of that, you have some appetizers and desserts for the most part. I went with the meat and cheese pasty which has sausage, beef, and cheese and is served with your choice of one of three dipping sauces. I went with the red wine gravy which was the perfect compliment to the pasty. The pasties were baked just right, flavorful, and a unique experience. They're a little pricey for the portion size, but still pretty filling. If you're feeling more adventurous, they have non-traditional pasties too like the Cubano, Tikka Masala, etc. They even have a dessert pasty with apples and cinnamon which is served a la mode with ice cream. I preferred the savory option as the pasty was a tad overcooked. But overall, an awesome meal. Cornish Pasty, I'll definitely be back. Stay pasty, my friends.
