Very comfortable restaurant where regulars gather and owners make you feel welcome and at home. Service 5/5 They were close to ending service when we arrived. They serve breakfast and lunch. We were immediately greeted and seated. Our server Chloe took our drink orders and returned to get our meal order. Nice menu options and both of us ordered the capris pain's which come with their country style potatoes. I also ordered a chopped salad for a little protein. Food 6/5 The meal (food) exceeded our expectations. The chopped salad was huge so we shared it. This salad was really yummy and the vinaigrette was delicious. Pro-tip The chopped salad is a meal onto itself! The Capris pani was fresh. Loved the tomatoes, thick sliced mozzarella cheese, basil(?) on a nicely toasted and pressed bread with a pleasant oil dressing. First time at Cafe Hodgeodge in East Mesa. One of the few breakfast options available at 6:00 a.m. Located in a strip mall open for breakfast and lunch. Food was good, prices reasonable and it is not a chain! I ordered the waffles served with two eggs and bacon. I was the only customer, what a treat. Quaint ambiance and good service. Wanted some breakfast and try a new place.. This spot used to be fried fish place but guess not anymore. I had high hope for this place with good reviews. First walk in and greated with friendly welcome.. On Sunday so seems like family is working which is cool. Looked at the menu and selections looked pretty good but I already had my mind set on chicken fried steak, since that's my all time favorite breakfast dish and always in search for the best. First I was little turned off by the price. Seemed pretty high for the dish but hey you never know.. Could be huge portion.. Also ordered coffee and half order of biscuit and gravy. Plate came and it was pretty good portion but not huge one. Side of potato was pretty good, with nice seasoning.. The chicken fried steak was nice and crispy but lacked in flavor. The gravy was not too bad but also lacked in flavor. If I'm thinking I need to add salt to my dish then definitely it needs more seasoning.. Eggs were cooked perfect. Biscuit was pretty good, pretty darn big size biscuit. Over all the service was great, nice cozy restaurant, I just wish the food tasted little better. Oh well.. This cute cafe is located in a strip mall with many of the stores closed up, but don't let that scare you off. When you enter the cafe you are greeted by friendly staff and you pick your table. There's variety of options on the breakfast/lunch menu. I ordered the green chili bake and it was delicious! It came out bubbling hot, egg on top (I opted for a scrambled egg instead of fried) with the perfect amount of spice. The others in my party ordered the Eggs Benedict and two egg entree. They had no major complaints, but they stated the potatoes could use a little more seasoning. The toasted bread were thick slices and the coffee was spot on! When I tell you the pancake was the best pancake I have ever had! The edges were nice and crispy but the inside was still soft and fluffy. It also had so much flavor for such a basic breakfast item. The syrup also came out hot! The hollandaise sauce for the eggs Benedict was delicious and had a lot of flavor. I'm not the biggest fan of breakfast potatoes normally but these were nice a crispy. The servers were so nice always checking in and asking if anything could be better. The little restaurant is tucked in a little shopping complex. Friend of mine and I stopped in there because he was told by another YouTuber that the chicken fried steak was really good so I tried it. It was pretty good. It wasn't great, but it was pretty darn good. My buddy had the omelette which was just about a taco omelette, but with a little bit of more mixture to them than normal, he gave him a 7.2 I gave him five stars because it's not always the food that makes the place. It's the people that worked there. The food is good. The people that worked there the service was awesomeand Cafe is like old time mom and pop from back years ago so the ambience was right up there. I ordered the omelet with ham , mushrooms spinach and green chilis ... the start of my meal I shook the hot sauce , seams the lid was damaged so hot sauce went everywhere all over my shirt pants table ect , when I told the waitperson she apologized but never offered to maybe bring a damp cloth to wipe down my shirt , table ect , when our breakfast arrived , I did see the spinach in the omelette but had to look extremely hard for pieces of any other ingredient, ii finally found a few micro pieces of ham , green chili , mushroom my wife had eggs and pancakes, the pancakes were good , the bacon seamed odd texture to me .... Absolutely amazing biscuits and gravy. Owner stopped by the table and I had to tell her it was the best I'd ever had! The biscuit was huge and buttery and fluffy yet dense. The fruit was fresh, the hodgepodge potatoes done perfectly. Can you tell I'm fantasizing about this meal right now? Pricing was perfectly standard, but the quality of the food makes it feel like a steal. The waiters were very friendly and felt lighthearted. My wife and I have eaten here twice now and each time we had a wonderful experience. The food, we had biscuits and gravy the first time and it was excellent. Great portions and the flavor was wonderful and the prices are very fair. The second time we had eggs, bacon and sausage and I must say, the sausage was wonderful. Very good flavor. We will continue to go back for more. The service was so friendly and personal. We met the manager as well as the staff there and they are great people. The ambiance is so warm and comfortable. Oh no. Oh no! Ohhhh nooooo!!! Mom and I have been coming here for breakfast for months and months. At least once every 2 weeks on the regular. It's our go to spot for breakfast. I religiously order their avocado toast and mom, who is a bit more adventurous, generally orders French toast-eggs-bacon or sometimes waffles or pancakes. We wandered in last week and grabbed a table. First noticeable distraction is the overwhelming odor coming from the restrooms . It was tolerable in previous visits but this time we were sitting closer to them and oh my goodness the smell was so,so strong. It smelled like the overuse of bathroom cleaner and hung heavy in the air. It was quiet the morning we were there. One customer at the table next to us was finishing his breakfast . The waitress quickly takes our order and comes back with mom's water and my very small cup of orange juice . By the time breakfast arrives my OJ is almost gone. She sets the plates on the table and walks away. Mom asks if I think she's coming back ? Lol. Don't bet on it mom. By now the OJ is gone and I've had a few bites of watermelon. I need a sharp knife for the avocado toast because it's thick bread but she doesn't come back . I start to cut into my toast, which is slathered with an odd color of avocado, and boom - waitress swaps out OJ without saying anything and leaves. I didn't get to ask for a better knife . She didn't ask how everything was. Nothing. Whatever. I go back to sawing into the toast and notice it's burnt. Black . Burned crust and burned bread. So I start dissecting it.... Trying to find an unburned part to eat. Never found it. I gave it and ate mom's burned bacon and my watermelon. We pushed our plates forward and waitress appears . "How was everything?" I told her the toast was burnt and it was inedible. She said "you should have told me earlier! We could have done something! You ate most of it!" I told her : you never came back to the table and checked on us. It's all still here. I didn't eat any of it. This is all the burnt parts! She looked at it and said "It's not THAT burnt" I still had to pay $13 for a burned meal I couldn't eat even after a 20% discount on that one item. She gave us the OJ for free. I had my phone out and was trying to take a pic of the burnt meal but she pulled the plate from the table in a hurry as I was snapping the pic. lol Farewell Cafe Hodgepodge. We had a good run.
