There are not too many sit down restaurants near the St. Augustine outlets -- mainly fast food. So after being up since 5 am, I was starved and happy to have a place with a real meal. Had one of their lunch specials for $8.99 which includes 2 sides and choice of bread (garlic or cornbread). I chose the chicken plate with BBQ beans and sweet potato and corn bread. The very good? The beans! Some of the best I've had in quite awhile. This is not the canned veggie style ones. Seasoned with sweet BBQ sauce,it had big chunks of pork in it. Really good. Also very good: the pulled pork (my husband ordered that). Good was the corn bread. It's the sweet kind with bits of corn kernels. More like a desert than a side. But this is my fave kind. (My husband likes traditional corn bread which to me is dry and tasteless. What can I say, he's a native Floridian/southerner.) I added a touch of butter and I was a happy camper. Ok was the sweet potato -- served while in the skin but in foil so a bit more cooked than I like it. Also ok was the chicken -- I didn't think to ask what part. I'm a white meat chicken gal and they served a leg and a thigh. The chicken is smoked so the skin is a bit fatty. Took off the skin and the meat underneath was tender and perfect to mix in with the BBQ beans. Oh : the iced tea comes in a humongous glass. This was the worst Sonny's ever. Nobody goes to Sonny's because it's fancy, but the bathroom was soooooo dirty. Wait, it was sooooo very dirty. Only giving this place one star because you have to give it something. Every single time I go here the service is awful and I tell myself I'm not gonna go back. However, it's been a while since I have last been here so I figured maybe something has changed. I was very mistaken the service sucks. They take forever just to greet you. The food is always cold no matter how long it takes for them. Today the waitress brought the food out and never once came to check on us. We had to get up to ask for silverware because if we didn't, we would have never gotten any. Told the manager and he just said they were short staffed and asked me if I wanted an application to fill out because they need the help. So we sit down and the kids are given the standard paper menu with pictures to color, so we ask "may we have some crayons please?" to which the waitress replies "sorry we are not allowed to have crayons since the remodel." We've been going to Sonny's for a long time. My wife and I were celebrating our 30th anniversary and Tuesday night we went there and ordered big deal sandwiches. I got the pulled pork and my wife got the chopped chicken as they didn't have the smoke turkey like she normally gets. It was really good. Wednesday afternoon we went back for dinner (we like Sonny's) and we got the same thing. We sat outside both times as we had our small dog with us. (she was born on the same day as our anniversary). Worst Sonnys ever. Went in for take out. Ordered a grilled cheese on garlic bread. They said "we don't have grilled cheese". Asked - "On the kids menu? You don't have grilled cheese?" They said "oh, yeah, we do on the kids menu..." what the heck? Wait times are ridiculously long for take out. Staff is oblivious to common sense. And although it's not the restaurant's fault- customers are rude too- must be because it's at a tourist spot, who knows. There are BBQ places all over the south but there is only one Sonny's. I've eaten Memphis bbq to Kansas City and Texas as well. Sonny's is your vegan recovery center if you need the meats. Took out of town family and they loved it. From the huge cups your drinks came in to the portions and quality of food. I love the beef brisket and the fried okra is always spot on. Has the best fries and the sauces on the table are always incredible. From chicken to ribs, pork to sausage Sonny's is always my goto. read more

Coming out of my Yelp retirement to pen this hangry, bad review. Look, I've frequented a few Sonny's in my day and I definitely do NOT expect much when I go (after all It's Sonny's, not a Ruth's Chris) but I at least thought I could count on receiving the food I ordered?? Guess I thought wrong. What an idiot! Visiting St. Augustine for the weekend, we wanted something semi-fast causal to eat before an evening tourist trappy event we had already booked in advance. Knowing a typical Sonny's turnaround is usually fairly fast (my running theory is that any given Sonny's kitchen staff consists of just 10 microwaves and 1 guy using them) we popped in to fill up and go. Our server Matt (who henceforth shall receive the brunt of this reviewer's gripes) started things off hopeful with some fun, playful banter, lulling us into a false sense of security, leaving us sipping our sweet tea (unsweet for my diabetic father in law -this will become important later-) as he went off to do... god knows what with our order. 10 minutes passed... Then 20... 30... Glasses nearing empty, we broke out of our conversation to wonder: Where on earth was our server Matt? Was he okay??? Also... where was our food? Finally, Matt graced us with his presence long enough to break the news that he had been unable to put our order in at all in the 30 minutes since we placed it due to a fellow server falling ill (obviously unfortunate, if true). Matt, valiant, had stepped in to tend to her, keeping him busy and preoccupied. He then left us checking our watches, now nervous about making our event on time. Another 10 minutes passed and the five of us were hungry and increasingly thirsty from our long-empty glasses (refills are after all the hardest part of waiting tables- I should know: I'm a former server and the sheer thought of topping off someone's drink still keeps me up at night). We went back and forth on whether or not it might be best to just leave and grab fast food or something else quick to avoid being late (and to get SOME sort of sustenance in my father in law who's blood sugar was plummeting by the second) but our buddy-ol-pal Matt made the decision much easier for us when 5 minutes later he strolled up and informed that the kitchen was out of ribs (the star of 2/5 of our order). Matt was so so so so kind enough to comp us our drinks (what a gent!) as we got up and left. This was our third visit to this location since the renovation. Our server was super friendly and promptly greeted us once we were seated. Our order came out quickly although the restaurant was busy on this Sunday afternoon. I'm giving this 4 stars based off my sides not coming out as hot as I would prefer. My baby back ribs were hot and perfectly cooked, falling off the bone, just the way I like them. My husband loves the salad bar and Brunswick soup. And my daughter is the biggest fan of the corn nuggets. The new bar and the TVs are a great addition. We will visit this location again! read more

We always like Sonny's but we do get it to go and we have not found it to be cold. Find the food to be delicious, prefer it to bonus however regretfully they have removed their delivery from GrubHub so as I cannot drive I am forced to go to Bonos as no one delivers Sonny's neither DoorDash, GrubHub or any other they are having a real mess by taking their delivery away from GrubHub as I was really utilizing that a lot and I'm sure others were as well. The pulled pork sandwich on garlic bread with sweet sauce is delicious as it is the chicken sandwich on garlic bread The chicken has a great flavor as does the pork and it is such a good flavor with their sweet barbecue sauce. Corn nuggets are delicious. The cinnamon donut holes are absolutely delicious as well and I highly recommend - even their side salads are amazing. I highly recommend them if they really need to get GrubHub or delivery service back delivering. I came in for lunch today in hopes of having a decent sandwich. Well let me start with as I was being seated the waitress used a soaked blue rag too wipe down the seats and table. I would have assumed she would have dried it when done but nope... I received a soaked butt as I had too sit down to reach the paper towels to continue drying everything. I started wiping the table and my waitress walked up and just watched. I'm amazed... I then ordered and received this dried up brisket and a coke when I ordered I sweet tea with two lemons... the large amount of paper towels I used to clean the table and bench seat have been sitting half in and half off the table since I finished 15 minutes ago and no one seems too care. We did not have any expectations but we were surprised on the up side by the friendly staff & good food. We ordered the family feast, supposed to feed 4 people for $45.00. It was a great deal! Have to say, ordered a meal before 5 to avoid any anxiety of rush for the business. I ordered Sonny's Sampler and was disappointed with the ribs, Mac and chz side, and the pork. Meats were very dry, especially the ribs. A dry rub should not taste like it has been in a basket awaiting sale. Mac and chz was over done pasta to extremes. Chicken and garlic bread were better, and Cole slaw tastes like KFC's. This makes me think of Kelly's in Boston, when expansion occurs, customers pay for it in in disappointing experience.
