Went for lunch with hubby. Server was very attentive and friendly. We got the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer they were ok. I got the special which was a smoked wing basket. I ordered the wings naked. the flats were great has good smoke flavor and well done the drums had good smoked flavor but were a little chewy probably because they were so big. Hubby had the three meat platter with sausage, pulled pork and brisket. The brisket had a lot of fat on it and not much smoke flavor, pulled pork didn't have any smoke flavor either and was better when using the variety of sauces which are good The sausage was the best. While traveling through, we asked a couple of locals where the best barbecue place was, and they all agreed that Bono's was it. So glad we asked because we definitely have to agree with them. I got the large rib platter with collards and sweet potato, the birthday girl, got a slawpy pig with baked beans, and my other friend got a three meat combo platter with pulled pork, brisket, and ribs, with a side of collards and green beans. We have stopped by a few times, but after discovering the BBQ places around St. Augustine our visit was a little disappointing. It took awhile for us to be seated but when we were the waitresses were very nice and attentive. The food is ok, but it is a chain restaurant so I didn't have high expectations. The price is comparable to what you would pay at a restaurant nowadays. As it got crowded it got a lot noisier. Not that it was the restaurants fault but there were a number of kids that were really loud and one who had an iPad that was turned up way too loud. We have two young kids with us so we know what it can be like having kids at restaurants. I would say if you are looking for great BBQ head to more of a local joint. read more

Restaurant claims BBQ feast comes with "Serves 3 to 5 people. 1lb. meat of your choice. 1 whole chicken (white and dark meat unless otherwise specified), 3 pints sides, and six toast." However it never came with any chicken or the other half of the feast. The sides potato salad and coleslaw were rancid. Not tangy from vinegar but rancid. The mac and cheese was swimming in watery cheese (if you can call it cheese) and tasted like the pasta had been drowning overnight in water. Quite honestly pig slop tastes better. As for the half of the main entree the brisket. It was tough and chewy and as a formed chef tasted like it was boiled and then microwaved until every last once of life was out of it. It looked CLOSED and uninviting. No lights. As we proceeded to drive around the building, we noticed the takeout window open and were told they are open for business. They were maybe a bit short staffed because of Covid-19, but they were in good spirits. The place wasn't spotless, but I've never been to a good bbq place that was. No sign asking folks to mask up due to the pandemic. Is this a covid denial? My husband and I will not go back knowing the staff could be a carrier. I wear a mask to protect them they need to wear one to protect me. We are both high risk due to age and health. The owners are loosing business and appear not to care. Too bad had a decent business going. I feel sorry for employees who are put at risk. We need to get this virus under control. Let's start with easy location on AIA from the beach, just down the road from the Walmart. Stopped in for some takeout on our way back to the beach from shopping. Building was nice, seating area was nice and clean. Bar area was very small, facing the "open pit" oven. Husband ordered pulled pork stacker with baked beans, and I ordered brisket sandwich. I asked prior to ordering if the brisket was tender and was told it "cooked" for 9 hrs. OK, and added onion rings and potatoe salad. I was told the brisket comes on texus toast garlic bread. Odd to me, but ok I'll try. Paid for it, and went home. Opened the order at home and was shocked. Tiny containers of the beans, potatoe salad and 4 onion rings. The pulled pork was not pulled, but chopped and very dry. The coleslaw on the top was small and looked very underwhelming. The bbq sauces came in prepackaged containers, like in a fast food joint. The brisket was on soggy cold toast, one inch thick, no garlic or even butter. The brisket itself was dry as shoe leather. The dog even found it chewy, as I shared with him as it was not edible for me. I should have paid attention to the word cooked, cuz it was! Isn't brisket usually smoked? Anyway, I don't write many reviews, but I didn't want any visitors or locals to have to experience this as I did. While looking at the menu I found fried corn on the cob. I ordered a three meat platter with sausage, brisket, and pulled pork with baked beans and the newly discovered corn. A short time latter I was enjoying sweet wonderful goodness of the corn and wondering why I had not discovered this delicacy earlier in life. Bono's Pit BBQ seems like one of those "typical BBQ joints". You know what I mean...kind of like Sonny's, Woody's, Dustin's, Dickie's, and countless others. Normally it's a dried out, over smoked, over cooked, and over-sauced BBQ mess on a plate. Little did we know Bono's has been around since 1949. Mostly scattered around NE Florida in Jacksonville, with a place in Denver, Gainesville and St. Augustine. Sixty-seven (67) years is almost unheard of in the restaurant business. Bono's St. Augustine has never looked crowded, but the drive-thru is always hopping. We visited on a Thursday evening. The crowd was minimal, the staff was cordial and efficient. Food service was very fast, almost too-fast. You know, the kind of fast where you think the food is coming directly from the microwave to your table. Not so at Bono's. Always fresh. We both ordered combo platters of meats, sides, and sweet tea. SIDES: Mac/Cheese - very, very cheesy and obviously handmade. Piping hot with just right amount of cheese to pasta. Not one to share mac/cheese, we each had our own. Brunswick Stew - smoked brisket, beans, veggies, and spices. A cupful of lovely homemade goodness. We could eat this by itself with some garlic toast. Baked Beans - somewhat typical of most BBQ joints, but with their spices and meats it's above par. Definitely not from a can. MEATS: First, let me say that Bono's is the FIRST BBQ joint that we enjoyed ALL of our meats without adding any sauce. Every meat was tender and juicy with an excellent bark. Their slow cooking shows through with awesome little crunchy bits from the bark. We tried the brisket, pork, ribs, turkey, and chicken. Secondly, who offers turkey? My other half spied the turkey and added it to her combo. Man-o-man was that some juicy, tender, and flavorful bird. Major kudos on that one Bono's. SAUCES: We're not fans of BBQ joint sauces. Most of them are generic and taste the same from roadside joint to roadside joint. Bono's is no different, except for the Reggie's Pit Boss Sauce. This sauce was freakin' amazing. Hot, spicy, peppery, thick, and just plain yummy. This sauce was a creation of one of their cutters in Jacksonville. He took their basic hot BBQ sauce and added some tasty bits. Reggie...you're the man. If I ever meet you I'm going to hug you and slap your butt. That's some tasty sauce. CONCLUSION: Being a Southerner, it takes a lot for me to get excited about BBQ. I've had bad, fair, decent, good, amazing, and great BBQ's. I would class Bono's as one of the greats. A pit master is judged by his meats, not his sides. The meats are great. Tender, juicy, and flavorful. So good you don't need sauce. In fact, if you need to sauce your meat you should be going to a different BBQ joint. I was born and raised in NE Florida, how I've never been to Bono's before is beyond me. We have finally found some great BBQ meats, and it is Bono's.
