I have been a faithful customer of Smokin' D's BBQ for over a decade! We have traveled far and wide for some ribs on many occasion. My family lived in St Augustine for many years and SD's was our go to spot for all things BBQ!!! Their ribs and brisket are to die for!!! Pretty sure I heard they smoke their meats for 7+ hours....ohhhhh yeah!!!! Never forget the homemade sauces!! This review is based on my new SD's experience. We came up for a weekend at the beach and decided to give the Downtown St Aug/ Ponce de Leon location a try because the SR 206 location is ALWAYS packed. We figured it was only right to spread the love!! WE WERE NOT DISAPPOINTED!!! The smells engulfed my nostrils before I ever turned into the driveway! The cute smoke house was just the right size and I enjoyed watching the meat come right out of the smoker then sliced and diced right in front of me. Cameron P the pit master was definitely doing his thing! My budget was $100...we got 2 full slabs, a pound of beef brisket, and a half chicken! Our total was $100.11.....and of course we thru the crew a tip because we appreciated the love and work they put into their magnificent products. Greeted warmly and ordered prom and ribs with potato salad and Cole slaw. The ribs were tough and not tender which was a huge disappointment. The pork is chopped and lacked tenderness and flavor. Potato salad wasn't to my lacking. I am glad I tried it but I will stick to Brisky's down the road. read more

Just finished lunch. I went with the two-meat platter: ribs and pork with potato salad and coleslaw on the side. Both meats were moist and the ribs were especially good. The only downside was the pork portion had quite a bit of fat. My wife also ordered the two-meat platter with turkey and beef along with baked beans and yellow rice. My group of 5 enjoyed the picnic lunch. All the sides were a hit. I especially liked the beans and my mom liked the southern potato salad (with mustard). We arrived, ordered, and left quickly. The drive home was short so I feel like the BBQ should have been warmer. read more

We unfortunately went during a cold month and were visiting from out of town so we had no option but to sit outside. I've had BBQ all around the south and the pulled pork isn't good . It's supposed to be pulled pork but it comes out cubed and not shredded or tender. ( Not to Mention chunks of fat ) . They don't have Mac and Cheese and the sides are not anything to write home about.. it's like rice , coleslaw and potato salad . Sorry I love local spots but I'm through with being disappointed with Smokin Ds I'd recommend MoJos, Bonos, Woodpeckers, anything but this place. read more

When we asked what the guy liked he said "Everything is good , best you have ever had" I have had BBQ across 25 states and never once have I heard an employee so confident about their BBQ I was a little skeptical but ordered a whole chicken , brisket , pork and a slab of ribs . OMG! My husband and I are locals since August 2023 and we've been hunting for some good old BBQ ! He and I have been visiting historic St. Augustine long before we moved here. In fact every time we came into town we said we would stop in and try some and we'd always forget or say next time! Man were we missing out! We always said Mojo was the best barbecue in town, but not anymore! I'm going to be telling everyone about SMOKIN D's! Great little place with a nice view of the marsh & river. The barBQ pork sandwich was on toast and perfect & flavorful, not too greasy. My side of fresh potato salad was also very fresh and delicious. They have a choice of 5 or 6 sauces -- I had the Florida which has our St. Augustine local datil pepper in it. It was not too spicey -- just right. The iced tea & lemonade (I mix them) was also great for barBQ on a warm sunny day -- in February! Love my Florida weather sittin by the river. Delicious, quality BBQ is almost as controversial as politics. Everyone has their idea or opinion of what is good and/or how it should be. Personally, I like all kinds...just not the bad kind...Ha! Yes, I have met bad BBQ and as the old saying goes...if you don't see a pit, it ain't legit! I think Smokin' D's will make any taste buds happy and definitely the BBQ that everyone can agree on. At Smokin' D's you have a pit...oh yeah! It's almost evil during cooking time when you drive by and smell it. That said...it's legit! As they say on their brochure...each day begins with consulting the ghosts of BBQ Kings of the past and then they rub their butts. This ritual obviously works! Everything is made fresh daily and the only bad part is...everybody knows this and some days they sell out. Great for them, could be bad for you! My suggestion...go early and don't dilly dally if you are planning to grab food from them for dinner! As for the BBQ...it gets my personal highest rating of "Apply to the Thigh" good. I would also recommend that you buy one of the family meals and prepare for a few more than you would normally buy for. Why you may ask? Because the next day you're probably going to be looking for leftovers or wish you had more of "that"...I'm just helping you out in advance. There are a few things you should know about the BBQ though...it comes without sauce. That is ok, it doesn't need it! However, if sauce trips your trigger then they have a variety of sauces that are included with the meal. There is not any place to sit inside, however, there is outdoor seating with a nice view of the river in back if you choose to stay there to eat. To me they are mainly a grab and go type of place. Definitely not a family outing type of place. While I'm at it, there is plenty of parking. In addition, it is located next to the Welcome Center on US 1. It is easy to get in and out of the parking lot for the most part, but if it's during the busy time of day it could be tricky (go right to turn left type of thing). Enjoy! read more

Good things can't last forever. Had dry brisket, chicken, and tasteless slaw. This used to be our go to place.

This place is absolutely fantastic. We had ribs, chicken, brisket, and pork. Every last bit was incredible. The coleslaw, yellow rice, and baked beans were all perfect too. If you're looking for good BBQ, this is the spot. Just be warned, it's first come first serve, so if they run out of something it's gone for the day, and there's no inside dining room. Luckily, the outside "picnic" area is shaded and beautiful. And the service was so kind, helpful, and quick. 10/10 recommend. read more

I'm a huge bbq fan, i've had bbq all over the country, but on my first visit to smokin D's I was blown away. Unlike every other bbq spot nearby, they actually smoke their meats making them extremely tender, flavorful, and juicy they truly have mastered the art. I've now been here over 20 times and i've never been disappointed. Great people here who make fantastic food. They have won multiple awards for best barbecue, so that should speak for itself! I will say their sides aren't too impressive, as they have no mac n cheese, fries, or mashed potato's, but their bbq is top tier so it completely makes up for it. Highly recommend! read more

Texan BBQ standards might be different from Florida standards, but this was undoubtedly the worst BBQ I've had. I assumed pork sandwich meant pulled pork. But this was totally unseasoned, cold in the middle, taste like it was just raw and cooked in a microwave. Almost feel pranked. Stopped here for lunch while visiting St. Augustine and was not too impressed. The pork was super tender, definitely slow cooked...but was lacking flavor. Sort of wish they would add the BBQ sauce to the meat before serving, or at least offer that option. Also, the sides were a bit lacking: no fries, no mac and cheese, baked beans were just ok. No kids options and no inside sitting. My advice would be to improve on the menu options. You definitely have something going with the pork, but need to take it a step further with the flavor and sides. read more

I dont normally order barbeque chicken, especially when travelling somewhere new, however, when my sister stumbled in here to look for the Welcome Center of St. Augustine, the smell of real pit barbeque was so tantalizing, that my sister begged me to come out here the very next day, which was exactly what we did. The menu is pretty simple and relatively limited, which is a good sign because it means the food is always fresh and that they're a master at what they do. It always makes the decision making process easier. So while my sister got the turkey bowl, I went for their dark meat chicken with cole slaw and texas toast for sides. Probably the best barbeque chicken I've had as it was fall off the bone tender and flavorful even without sauce. But I still got sauce, of course, and went for the sweet barbeque that definitely tasted homemade and complemented the chicken very well. Coleslaw is coleslaw, so theres not much to say, but the texas toast was buttery thick and hearty. Its a small place and theres no sitting room, so everything was to go which is ideal for the pandemic times. read more

I dunno we were heading someplace south for lunch, then the whiff happened. A U-ie and boom we were there. We were noobs..apparently looked the role, lol. First time here? Yes. The recommendation was turkey, no brisket due to supply issues. We went pork sammich. The meat artist pulled a shoulder out of the oven, sliced a healthy piece off, went to dicing. He smoked pot in 78 and now he smokes pork. Had the brisket! Yummy, the sliced style not the pulled. Had some awesome smoke flavor. Tried the sweet and tangy and the Texas heat. Both very good. There advertisement says sold out for pass 15 years, I can see that, no places to sit, except outside on a filthy Picinic table ridden with bird droppings. No clean bathroom, to wash your hands with, so filthy, loaded with German roaches, no soap, cracked toilet seat, if that's what you call it. I asked, what kind of method for cooking the food, wood or kerosene, Tyrone, speaks out, no kerosene used here, we use apple, cherry, and oak. Places, that use kerosene, find it cheaper to cook with than wood. Problem with kerosene causes you to Belge all day long with strong after taste and heart burn. Well, that's exactly what happen to us after eating at this place. Not real BBQ cooking. Smell's good outside, but I was not there to smell the food. Ordered ribs, chop pork sandwich, wife said sandwich was ok, but ribs were huge greasy, all fat, barely had meat, on them. read more

Being spoiled by KC & St. Louis Q, I was dissappointed that the brisket was tough & not the best quality meat. Flavor was excellent however, the same for everything I tried. Turkey was great. Sides have great flavor, but they are very small, maybe three bites. TX hot sauce has great flavor & more than average heat. Roadside shack, lots of parking but no inside tables. There are a few improvements worth noting. The first and most important is that they accept plastic, debit and credit. That's nice. The new location is run by the son, who's been there since I recall my first visit to the original. The kid says he pushed for the credit card change. I suspect he was a force behind the choice of location, but I'm not sure. You an eat outside by the river. Excellent views. Speaking of the location, it's closer to downtown which is a positive for many, and is located next to an Old Town Trolley "Welcome Center". He also says he has some menu changes he's hoping to implement. When I mentioned the stellar beans he said it was his Grandma's recipe from a book that goes back generations. He says he might be bringing on pickled okra, and a possible, but much anticipated moonshine pickle. So for the details on the food, read my review of the original.
