I love that we're trying to do more authentic and tasty mexican food in NYC. This spot has brought the Burrito Norteno to NYC which is prevalent in Arizona or Northern Mexico and really great. The burritos at Son del North are a good version of these, but not great. I think the best and most authentic actually is the bean and cheese burrito. It really hits the mark for a bean and cheese Burrito Norteno. The refried beans are a little more healthy (less pork/lard/fat) than what I've had when in Mexico or the Southwest, but still really good. The Carne asada is also great, and the flavor of the carne asada is great, but it's lacking the juiciness and fat that flows through the burritos I remember. The dipping sauce you get with it certainly helps bring up the juiciness quotient, but there's still an opportunity to make it juicier. Now mind you, this is better than most mexican food in the city still, and the service shows that there is love and care put into each burrito including grilling the burrito after making which is truly wonderful. If it's cold outside it's going to be hard to find space to eat these burritos, but that's okay, you can find a corner or bench and do so, so just walk with them. They're much more manageable than a Super Burrito or something like that. I'll be back, because NYC does need more food like this, but it does not win my Southern California seal of approval for great mexican food. read more

Also the beans were mushy and wish had more texture. The green sauce was great would definitely recommend buying an extra one. The tortilla had perfect grill marks. Heard amazing things about this place in the east village and was very excited to try the west village location. It lived up to my expectations. Exceptional burrito. I got the carne asada which was perfectly savory, charred steak, caramelized onions and hints of tomato salsa. It comes with a "dipping salsa" that is so good it was critical to the experience. I did not get guac because guac is too good and I wanted see how it was on it's own. That's how good it was. Now the main thing here is it's $18 for carne asada ($16 for pollo asado). I ask myself if I would pay the extra $5 over a chipotle burrito? Yes, yes I definitely would. Would I pay the extra $8 over the one other good Mexican place. Uncertain. Planning to dine-in would be crazy. It's so small. But Father Demo square is two feet away and Wash Sq Park is 3 blocks for overflow seating. read more

I came on a hot Saturday for lunch with husband. A great location across from the park and in close proximity to all the neighborhood has to offer. We split both the chicken and steak burrito and a a fresh hibiscus drink. The chicken was definitely my favorite, I love grilled meats. Hubs loved his steak burrito but I found it to be too heavy for me, very flavorful though. The drink was a bit too sweet for my liking but I can see other people would enjoy. The sauces on the side were fantastic and I really enjoyed eating them with the burritos, they added a lot. Will definitely be back! The line may look daunting but it moves quick and the service is very friendly and patient. read more

I'm sorry but this is TOTALLY worth the hype. The bean and cheese burrito really is IT. I absolutely love that they deliver to long distances as well (added delivery fee but saves commute time if you live far or are busy). The burrito's tortilla is really what makes the difference. Had to give this place a visit once I heard they opened a West Village location. I ordered the steak burrito and it was excellent, arguably one of the best burritos I've had in NYC. Great portion of steak included for the price point, and the burrito was large enough to split between two people. Get extra green sauce on the side for dipping. Finally was able to try Son Del North for lunch. It was honestly pretty packed and they had a lot of online orders, so I would recommend ordering ahead or not going at peak hours. We ordered inside and there were a few stools to sit at and some tables outside to wait at. I opted for the viral bean and cheese burrito, I was pleasantly surprised at the flavor and the green sauce on the side really makes it great. I will say, if you want more texture variety this is not for you, the inside is essentially the consistency of mashed potatoes. It was very filling, I was not able to finish this in one sitting so beware. I will say, watching them fill up the chicken/steak burritos in the assembly line they are definitely very generous with their protein portions which is great. In terms of prices for the area I thought it was somewhat reasonable as well. Overall, this is not something I see myself getting often since it was so heavy to me, but I am glad I tried it! read more

Burrito store front with the peeps cooking where you can see so you know it's FRESH. We had the steak burrito and the shrimp burrito and chips and salsa. Really good and filling. Like come hungry, ok. There's outdoor high tops and small mini stools inside. We came in the dead of summer heat and just sat at the indoor stools and inhaled our burritos. They are lowering their standards. The last 3 times we ordered the carne asada burrito it tasted like all the steak was burnt. Probably wont get it again.
