I'm always on the search for a good taco spot. It's amazing that with all the good food in NYC, finding good tacos is a rarity. That said, Carnitas Ramirez is pretty damn good. Located in the East Village, they serve primarily pork. There's some seating in the front on a nice day with additional seats in the back. They have an amazing toppings bar for you to customize the taco your way. We ordered the surtida, costilla, and chicharron tacos. We also got the guacamole and side of chicharrones. The surtida was the best. I also highly recommend the side of chicharrones with the guac. Overall the food is pretty legit. They happened to be filming something today and the camera folks were pretty annoying getting in the way and oblivious to it. Otherwise, I would really recommend coming.
Big fan of Taqueria Ramirez so was very excited to try out their Manhattan spot and it did not disappoint!! I was initially a little nervous to come since Taqueria Ramirez's lines are always insane, but showed up around 6pm on Saturday (in February though) and there was no line. Seating-wise, they have seating inside in the front (probably comfortably sit about 8 people), and then additional seats in the back (probably comfortably sit about 16-20 more folks). They also have some standing tables outside if the weather is nice. In my two visits, I've gotten: - Surtida (mixed special, all the pork bits) - Maciza (pork butt) - Barriga (pork belly) - Lengua (tongue) - Carnudo (fried pork belly) My personal favorites were surtida, carnudo, and lengua. The surtida offers a mix of everything. The carnudo had great crispy textures. And the lengua was a nice tender texture. Overall, this is a worthy follow-up to Taqueria Ramirez and definitely worth a visit if you're a fan of pork! They also have some very out there cuts of pork like ovaries or snout if you're feeling adventurous. Service is FAST and friendly which is also a huge plus and the topping/salsa bar is great. I still might say I prefer the variety of the Greenpoint location since they have different meats, but this will definitely hit the spot if you're bound to Manhattan.
I found out about this place through the Bon Appetit video on YouTube and had to check it out immediately. This restaurant uses every single part of a pig and even cooks most of the food in lard! Sounds super decadent but I have found that each taco is pretty well balanced. They have a salsa bar with homemade toppings that you can use to customize your taco to your heart's content. The vibe here is super chill and food comes quick. The tacos are so yummy I can never take a picture before my first bite.
Stopped by on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't too crowded! I tried: + Lengua - tongue + Surtida - carnitas + Maciza - pork butt + Chicharron crumble Tongue and carnitas were my favorites, though the pork butt was also amazing. Just be prepared for rich and greasy (complimentary). It's a nice touch that they have a sink for you to wash your hands in - and free tap water!

Like their Brooklyn sister restaurant, they have fantastic salsas and a toppings bar, and they sling tacos out very quickly. There are a few counter seats in the front of the shop, with smaller tables in the back.
they got pork tacos here with cuts i doubt you could find elsewhere in the city. the surtida was great but my favorites were the trompa and rabo with an indulgent texture and fattiness but i wouldnt recommend to most. the place is tiny and will probably be busy but service is fast. its a beautiful place.
"Real deal Mexican" This is the outpost transplant from Williamsburg that everyone from Eater to Infatuation to fellow Yelpers have been raving about. And yes it deserves it! They take a whole pig, cook and serve every part of it, down to the snout. Go here for some of the most authentic Mexican food. Just make sure you actually like pork. What's to cheer - Great food - Don't shy away from some of the more unusual cuts like head, neck, cheek, stomach and more - Reasonable priced - Fast service What's to jeer - Not much. Very fast service, definitely a busting lively atmosphere with some open air seating in front and indoor seating in back. Tacos are really solid. They make their own tortillas in front of you and have so many different cuts of pork. As someone who enjoys a bunch of different types of pork and is indecisive, I always get the surtida (mix of everything) and the combo of textures is great. My sister has been slowly exploring each individual cut and has enjoyed everything as well. The salsa bar is well stocked and they don't skimp out! Always a great time here.

They served the food really quickly and we were glad to find a seat. I liked the little knickknacks throughout the restaurant that gave it character. I would definitely come back.

Wow, finally, NYC has tacos that can compete with LA and CDMX! Before I moved to LA, I thought the NYC taco scene was really good. Then I got to try LA's taco trucks and realized everything I've had in NY pales in comparison. So when I read about this place on NY Times I was apprehensive. But then I happen to walk right past it and I figured, I might as well try it out. I'm so glad I did because these are legit!
Awesome pork tacos with 12+ niche cuts. I tried Surtida (everything) and Burriga (skin on pork belly) for $5 each with cash, add tax with card. The braise flavor is delicious and shared between the cuts, but what sets them apart are their distinct textures. Of course belly, butt, and rib are familiar skeletal muscle, and I could pick out the jowl and ear (Taiwanese cuisine has those too) but the squidgy uterus, tender tongue, and whatever tongue is... Handmade tortillas are pressed and griddled fresh. The meats are cut to order. There's a self-serve counter with a mild green salsa, a spicier red salsa, pickled red onions, pickled hot peppers, and lime wedges. The place is more spacious than you might expect. A humble back dining space seats 14 or so. There's a tap water spigot.

DANG, this food is fire. My favorite tacos were the carnudo (fried pork belly) and costilla (ribs). The gordita with chicharrones was also delicious. Even with the fattier cuts of meat, I didn't feel gross afterwards. The red salsa was really good. Beware that the onions are pretty spicy. They have a decent amount of seating in the front and back. A very unique taco spot! Never been to a place where you could get every cut of the pork (even the uterus!) My favorite taco was the belly, it was crunchy and had an interesting flavor profile. The chicharrones were also delish! Overall, the meat was tender and fresh but lacked a bit of flavor and variety. I couldn't taste much difference between them and I started thinking about the body parts I was eating, which didn't help lol. Cool experience and cutie location but not sure if I'll go back. read more

Another one of my favorite taco spot in nyc! Specializes in carnitas tacos, but the best part is that you can choose the cut of pig you would like. Ex. They have tongue, ribs, pork belly, etc! & the surtida taco is a mixture of all the different parts. The concept is you order first & then they call your name. There's a topping bar with salsa , onions, cilantro, lime, which you help yourself with! (Btw less is more!) there's seats in front & a couple more in the back, but overall pretty small & won't be able to sit large parties. great decor throughout! I really want to try their sister restaurant( taqueria rameriz) now!! read more
Just like Taqueria Ramirez, this place does what's in its name to complete perfection. Every cut of pork you can imagine, melt in your mouth tender. I'll be honest, I got the safest cuts on my first visit, loin and butt (as opposed to more exotic cuts like uterus). I also got one of their special of the day: cochinita pibil, which I once fell in love with during a Merida visit. Funny enough, the cochinita ended up being my last favorite! The butt and loin were both just perfectly cooked, amazingly melt in your mouth tender, went perfectly with their salsa's and a squeeze of lime with pickled onions. I'd like to go back and try their torta's, given how perfectly cooked and tender the meat is I think it would be amazing on a sandwich. It's a small place without a lot of seating (the seating is actually on upside down buckets on a window ledge), but has a *really* nice touch that there's a sink on the condiment counter to pre-wash your hands and clean your hands after eating some wonderfully messy tacos. This one is worth going out of your way for! read more

Barriga (Belly) little too fatty for me but that's my preference. The salsa roja was quite spicy so be mindful on the amount. There's a back room with more seats in the back as well. Authentic Carnitas Heaven in the East Village! Carnitas Ramírez at 210 E 3rd St is hands-down one of the best hidden gems in the East Village. If you're a fan of slow-cooked pork done right, this place needs to be on your radar. I tried the taco sampler, and every bite was packed with flavor--juicy, tender meat with the perfect crisp on the edges. You can tell this is family-style cooking with real heart. Their tortillas are fresh and warm, and the green salsa? Absolute fire. The place is small and casual, but that only adds to the charm. It feels like you're stepping into someone's kitchen. Service is fast, friendly, and no-nonsense. This spot delivers authentic Mexican street food without pretense. Come hungry--you're gonna want seconds. read more
Pretty solid spot! There's a quick rotation of people here throughout the day, although I did see a line here at some point. Of course I waited for a moment when it's chill, walked up straight to the register and asked for a recommendation. Their menu is in Spanish but if you ask they'll tell you their top sellers. It's only pork here and they pretty much use all parts of the pig. I asked for the least fatty ones:) The tacos are served as plain meat on a tortilla then you head to the salsa bar to choose your toppings. I love that they have pickled carrots. Yum! Overall the tacos were really good. But there was an herb I wasn't a fan of..not sure if it was in the one of the salsas. I loaded up without a taste test. The bucket seats at the window counter are uncomfortable. Too make shift for my taste. And I couldn't find a fork. Yes I'm that person that doesn't want to drop a piece of avocado from my taco without being able to put it back on. read more
The best Mexican food in Manhattan, in my book. Go with friends and get carnitas by the kilo. It's better value that way, and also more fun to assemble your own tacos. One kg of carnitas allows for 3 choices of cuts and comes with 24 tortillas and unlimited accoutrements. Easily enough food for 5-6 people. We got the surtida, carnudo, and costilla and it was all incredible - fatty, porky, delicious. Not a place for a light meal, but for a highly satisfying one. read more
one of the best taco spots i've found in the city! I tried two costilla tacos and one lengua taco. They were each $5 so a little pricey but definitely worth trying. Service was fast but it is very popular so there was a line down the street to try them. There's barley any seats though so usually it's a to go situation but since I went during summer there was some seating outside! Definitely will be back!! read more
This is not like any other spot I've been to- they specialize in pork tacos. Serving all different cuts of pork- I couldn't tell you what I got, but with some of their salsa and lime- these tacos were fantastic. The service was quick- the seating was tricky...we got lucky and found a spot. Good for a quick very casual grab and go. read more

I loved everything about this experience. Very good food that's cooked well and flavorful with a standard set of toppings. It's bee much a no frills spot but the staff is nice and the service is quick. This place is made for you to grab your favors, eat and go. But I love that they have all the parts of the pig available for you to try. I will definitely go back! read more

My husband wanted to try a new place he found on Instagram, so we decided to check it out. This spot prefers cash but does accept cards, and while there's no traditional table service, the cozy atmosphere makes up for it. Food: 5/5 I loved these tacos--it was hard to stop eating them! This place specializes in using the whole pig, so I knew I had to try some of the more unique cuts. All the salsas (verde, rojo, etc.) are on the side, ready for you to customize your tacos. My husband and I are big eaters, so we each had around six tacos, but you could definitely have fewer and still be satisfied. My favorite was the tongue taco. As someone who eats beef tongue regularly, I was worried it might be tough, but it was buttery soft and super meaty. My husband went for even more unique options like uterus and snout. I wasn't a fan of the irony taste of the uterus, but I'm glad we got to try it. Overall: I'd definitely go back! The staff was super nice, the food was top-notch, and it was a great, affordable dinner in Manhattan. read more
I was dying to check out Taqueria Ramirez, but couldn't make myself go all the way to Brooklyn. So I decided to check out its sister restaurant in Manhattan! Note though that this taco spot specializes in pig so it only has pork tacos. Service was extremely fast and friendly. Ambiance was very casual-- there's some seating spots, so perfect to pop by to eat a few tacos. Tacos: 100/10 (amazing tacos!!!! I especially loved the crispy pork belly-- it was to die for. Carnitas Ramirez is the sister store to Taqueria Ramirez, specializing in carnitas (a traditional weekend/celebratory meal in Mexico) rather than tacos al pastor. Needless to say, each visit of mine has felt like a little celebration in itself. The store is quite simple, and in the usual Manhattan fashion, quite small. There is a bench with stools along the display case, as well as seats facing the window (and on nice days, seats facing inwards from the street with the window open). In the back you can see the cauldron of carnitas frying, and right in the front there is a display case with each part of the pig separately labeled. Service is as you would expect as such a store, where you order at the counter and wait for your tacos to be prepared. Once prepared, there is a counter with pickled red onions, pickled jalapeños and carrots, and salsa (in particular I was a fan of the avocado salsa, very tasty and free!) As is tradition, they use the whole pig. The display case shows you what each part looks like, and they have something for the brave, as well as the less adventurous. My two favorite cuts are probably the costilla, or fried rib meat, as well as the carnudo, which is an extra crispy version of pork belly. On your first visit I'd recommend trying a few different cuts (be adventurous, it's all good!), and then on your next visit order what you liked best the first time (or whatever looks particularly good that day). I cannot stress enough how important the toppings are. Carnitas on its own is very rich and fatty, you could quickly find yourself having an unpleasant meal. The toppings solve that problem. The pickled onions, jalapeño and other vegetables add a lovely acidity, and the salsa a welcome spice. I would also certainly recommend the chicharron for crunch (basically Mexican for pork rinds). Overall, a welcome addition to the New York City Mexican food scene, and somewhere I see myself visiting many times this summer for some tacos and a beer on a sunny Sunday afternoon. read more

Carnitas Ramirez in the East Village has a simple, welcoming vibe and is all about pork tacos. I tried a few different cuts and they were all really flavorful. The woman at the counter was super helpful, walking me through the menu and even giving me three tacos for free. The service felt friendly and genuine, and I'll definitely be back to try more. read more
Finally got the chance to go here on a Friday night. By the time I got here (8:30pm) the only tacos left were the Maciza (pork butt) and the Surtida (mixed) tacos. You can tell there is a lot of love and effort put into this place, judging by the flavor profiles (on point), homemade tortillas, and self serve salsa bar. Put some salsa verde, pickled onions and a generous squeeze of lime and chowed down. FYI- seating is very limited and the "seats" are literal buckets lol. The real deal. I honestly think if you did a blind taste test of this versus some of the best street tacos in CDMX this would do pretty well. The pork belly is other-wordly, and the surtida, lengua, and especially that gordita are incredible as well. My wife loved the maciza and even the surtida, even though she prefers leaner meat. I haven't been to the original spot so I'm not sure how it compares, but Carnitas Ramirez is a great taco spot I'd definitely swing by again if I were in the area. There's a good selection of tacos made from different parts, but I'd recommend looking online - there aren't any descriptions in real life, but the website goes into detail about the flavour / taste / texture of each part. I ordered an assortment, plus the must-get Surtida taco and enjoyed it all! For ambience, it's a simple, no frills spot with a hand wash station up front. There are some stools up front both inside and outside, as well as a larger back room for seating. read more

Super fan of their other taqueria, so had to check this one out. I grew up eating carnitas on the weekend with the fam, super pumped about having this place in Manhattan! Nomz: Had the costilla taco, very flavorful. And a buche taco (add lime and salt, chefs kiss), deliciously cooked. They have a bunch of salsas and toppings to add to your taquitos. Drinks: Victoria, my fav Mexican beer, still confused why so few places carry it. Service: Helpful on what to have, counter service. Ambiance: Mexican music, green flag. Super nostalgic details inside and around the restaurant, authentic design, love. Seating inside with more in the back. Nope or Dope: Dope, will be back for more! Carnitas Ramirez is casual taco spot in Alphabet City--a sister restaurant of the insanely popular Taqueria Ramirez in Greenpoint. the taco menu is all about different cuts of pork from popular ones like shoulder to more off-the-beaten ones like ear, tongue, brain, etc. very clean down-to-Earth eatery--there are seats by the window inside and outside; sometimes sidewalk tables, and there is a small dining area in the back, inside. Carnitas Ramirez is a counter service taqueria: order and pick-up at the counter. there's not table service. it's first come, first served. no reservations. ordered 3 tacos. took about 5-10 minutes for my order to get called. my trio was 1) a lenga (tongue) topped with chicharron crumbles; 2) cachete (jowl); and 3) barriga (pork belly)--all of them come dressed with onions and cilantro. there's a small variety of add-ons like salsa roja, salsa verde, and variety of pickled vegetables like onions and such. take advantage of the salsas and pickled veggies...as the tacos would be pretty bare without them both visually and taste-wise. the lenga (tongue) is sliced into thin strips and are very tender. added chicharron crumbles to it for more texture and fatty flavor. throw in the pickled veggies and the salsa roja for flavor. cachete (pig cheeks) is tasty. nice juicy chewy soft meat that soaks up the salsa verde and really makes a savory taco. the barriga (pork belly) is pork belly and the fattiness of the pork belly is satisfying in the corn tortilla. if you're looking to make a meal of tacos--you'll need ~5 as they are on the smaller side. to me, Carnitas Ramirez is perfect for a quick bite of 1-2 tacos on a sleepy day or evening. the service is friendly and quick if you have's q's ask them. warning: be prepared for lines on prime time days like Friday, Saturday, & Sunday at meal times. read more
