I came here for Cinco de Mayo and I must say it wasn't the best experience. I've been to the Union Square location which is spacious and had a blast. Although I had a reservation, I was instructed to go to the bar. Literally no home at the bar whatsoever. Granted I know Mexican restaurants tend to be super crowded for Cinco de Mayo but I was a party of one. I should have been seated outside at the very least. I had to drink my frozen Patron Margarita standing up until a space at the bar open up after 20-25 minutes. Once seated, my area wasn't properly cleaned. I felt awkward and uncomfortable. I reluctantly ordered fish tacos with mild guacamole but was given spicy guacamole. The fish tacos were a little cold. The service was rushed. I left without ordering another drink or more food. I was so very happy one of my favorite restaurants was still around!! Love love love the food here and even though 3 people shared 2 meals, we were still stuffed when leaving here. The staff was extremely nice, and even though we were 45 minutes late, they were able to fit us in, so appreciated that. We chose this place for brunch, as it was close to where we needed to be. My friend has been to their other location and said it was good. We had reservations and there was a party ahead of us at the entrance. No greeting or acknowledgment from the hostess upon entrance (red flag). She seated the other party and very lackadaisically returned to her booth to finally acknowledge our presence. She seated us with menus but no brunch menu even though it was still brunch time. I had to ask the waiter for it. Took a while to get order in. We ordered two apps and one entree to share. Took even longer for our food to arrive. Overall, the evening turned out well and the food was excellent. The three of us ordered fajitas and honestly could have shared one or two because the portions were generous. Everything tasted great. Our server was warm, patient, and genuinely welcoming ....the kind of service that makes you feel like you're being hosted in someone's home. He was a highlight of the night. Unfortunately, the experience didn't start that way. I had made a reservation through OpenTable and could clearly see it confirmed on my phone, but the host said she couldn't find it in their system. I completely understand that technology glitches happen ....that wasn't the issue. I was simply trying to show her the reservation so the restaurant might be aware there could be a connection issue between OpenTable and their system. Even after I explained that I wasn't arguing with her, just trying to point out what the customer sees so it could be helpful to the restaurant, she continued to respond in an argumentative way and kept repeating that they didn't have it. The point I was making seemed to be completely missed. Instead of acknowledging the possibility that something might be wrong with the system, the interaction became unnecessarily defensive. It set a negative tone at the start of the evening. Thankfully, the excellent food and our wonderful server completely turned the night around. Because of that, I would absolutely come back. I do hope, however, that the restaurant can help the hostess find a more pleasant and customer-focused way to handle situations like this in the future. read more

I was happy to find same day seats here. The location is very convenient. The food servings are generous and the dishes are so fresh and tasty. Easy to find enough to eat that's fresh- I don't like being weighed down with fried food. The restaurant is comfortable, colorful, and a great place to stop on the way to the Metropolitan Museum. We enjoyed eating a full meal that wasn't too heavy before taking on a day in the museum. My only regret is that I couldn't try one of their cocktails that looked so tasty. The staff was wearing little ear pieces to communicate, they don't mess around with their communication here. I really enjoy seeing staff who really cares about efficiency. It makes me feel safe in my dining experience. It's Somehow I remember the bathrooms were fun, but I can't recall now in what way I guess you'll just have to stop in and see for yourself. While in New York, we met up with family and had dinner at Rosa Mexicano, and wow, what an awesome time. The space was busy and bustling, full of life, and it's easy to see why. The service was attentive, kind, and genuinely helpful from start to finish. Everyone at the table ordered some version of the chilaquiles, and I shared the duck chilaquiles with my mom. It came with a rich mole sauce, which I had never seen paired with chilaquiles before, and it was incredible. The duck was tender, the sauce was layered with flavor, and the portion was more than enough for two. The entire experience was joyful, flavorful, and full of warmth. We had come with friends that had a baby stroller and they were so accommodating and willing to move us to a bigger booth so we could fit the stroller more comfortably. This is a great place to come if you're looking for a late brunch restaurant - I believe their brunch menu is available until 4pm. They also have bottomless mimosas! My friend and I ended up getting mimosa flights (OJ, pomegranate, guava, and mango). The pomegranate was the best by far! The vibes were casual, not loud, and there were a few TVs in the bar area with sports on. This is also a great restaurant for picky eaters (like myself). We said no and we just rush ordered ginger ale. He brought us plain seltzer water from the fountain bar and insisted it was ginger ale. It was not. We would have ordered drinks if he didn't rush us. The guacamole appetizer was ok in taste but the portion served was only about 4 tablespoons spread wide around the mortar bowl to appear plentiful. Ordered steak well done however it was served medium and it was very chewy. Side of rice was bland. Waiter hovered as I reviewed the check (which had higher prices than the menu showed.) The ambiance is nice with blue and purple lighting around the whole restaurant and some TV screens showing sports as well. This Rosa Mexicano is located in the Upper East Side neighborhood of their very first restaurant, ever, anywhere. I can't technically review that founding restaurant location on Yelp since it relocated. l have enjoyed dining at that original location on 1st Avenue before it moved over to 2nd Avenue. In terms of dining options in 3 Manhattan neighborhoods: they have this one, aforementioned location on the Upper East Side, one location in Union Square and one at Lincoln Center. They also have other restaurants across the US, including one Rosa Mexicano in Maryland's National Harbor near DC. I started visiting that restaurant because of how much I enjoyed their Upper Eastside original. Rosa Mexicano is passionate about colorful modern plating presentations, aromatic and authentic flavors and inviting interior design. It's definitely a perfect place for date nights and celebrations because it's gorgeous inside. Rosa Mexicano's Guacamole en Molcajete prepared in a lava rock bowl, tableside, is delicious. For those who are really, really ambitious about guac -- because guac can actually be eaten by the bowl like a salad -- you can make your order a 'double.' Also, their Salsa Molcajete and warm tortilla chips are delightful, with smoky notes in the salsa that really come through. Do they use a hint of molé in their salsa? Or is it the lava rock that they make the salsa in which seasons the salsa so well? I have never asked but I love the deep rich, flavor. Their tortilla chips are legend-worthy because they are so perfectly thin, light and salty. I enjoy their marg's. Guava plus strawberry, by the glass, or mango are favorites. But having a full pitcher of margarita, is at the center my best memories with a friend or two. A Grand Marnier float is available for only $2 more. There is a nice selection of tequila types in multiple brands for blanco, reposado and añejo. The Rosa Mexicano Chicken Tortilla Soup is one of the first dishes I've ordered, here, and have continued to order. This soup is flavorful and a must-try. It is made with a roasted tomato-pasilla chile broth with grilled chicken, sliced avocado, shredded Chihuahua cheese, crema fresca and corn tortilla strips. Delicious. I normally order an enchilada or share entrees to taste more dishes. A sampling of a few different types of the empañadas was once on the menu and I loved them. The Birria and Cheese empañada is delightful. It is made with beef brisket, oaxaca cheese, cilantro, red onion and red chili corn masa. They have a variety of steak options here, as well as a signature cheeseburger. Definitely check the Happy Hour Fiesta Menu available only to bar patrons from 4-7. There are specials rates on food as well as carafas of margs and sangria. I have not tried the cucumber and mint refresco but would like to. Rosa Mexicano also offers a featured tequila. read more

When my friend was in town from the UK I knew that I had to take her out to the best Mexican restaurant on the upper west side. I've been a huge fan of Rosa Mexicana for years and have always loved their tacos and enchiladas. I'm also a huge fan of their guacamole, which they make right in front of you at your table. The only reason why I gave the restaurant four stars instead of five was because they refused to serve dipping vegetables with the guacamole and salsa alongside the chips. What if there was an allergy or if someone was trying to stay away from too many carbs so they could enjoy the entree? The new policy was ridiculous but that didn't take away from how good the food was. I ordered the shredded pork tacos and I died and went to heaven. Everything about the entree was delicious and it was the best pre-movie dinner. I love the restaurant and everyone was so helpful. They were strong but had the right amount of guava flavor. We also had the ceviche and steak tacos. The ceviche was a bit too sour for what i'm used to when I make my own, but the crackers were a good combination for it. The steak tacos were delicious! Rosa Mexicano has been around for years and is a traditional Mexican themed restaurant and watering hole. While it has several locations in NYC and around the country, we were at the East 52nd St. location. As we entered, we were greeted with Mariachi Band music and great vibes among the various groups of people imbibing Margaritas and other Taquila festival drinks. After being seated and served chips with "homemade" guacamole and salsa, we ordered. Arlee had a Taquila based "Mexican Martini" and I ordered a Casa Modelo Especial (lager). The taco chips were delicioso and I could have made a meal on them alone coupled with the sauces. We ordered an appetizer that we shared. It was fantastic. Shrimp Diablo was prepared with crispy shrimp, chile de árbol mayo (made of berries from the Hawthorne tree), and avocado ranch dressing. While enjoying our libations, we also looked around at the themed décor that included glass and wrought iron lamps festooning the ceiling, imaginative pinatas, and in-flight Mexican eagles painted on dark blue walls. It was on to the mains. I had a roasted half-chicken with mole poblano (a traditional sauce made from peppers, spices and nuts), sauteed spinach, sweet plantains, white rice and corn tortillas. Arlee ordered the Birria Quesa Tacos. This dish contained a brisket stew that's native to Jalisco. This was served with Oaxaca cheese, cilantro, red onion and corn tortillas. It also came with a consommé dip that was every bit as yummy as a traditional French dip. We were quite satiated and didn't order dessert although I am sure that we would have not been disappointed by the offerings. I did not expect that this restaurant would be so authentic in their approach to the regional cooking of Mexico. They served classic dishes as well as a fresh approach to their décor and bill of fare. While I would have expected this in some cantina in the Southwest, it was a surprise to find such well preserved traditions to reside in the heart of Manhattan. I heartily recommend Rosa Mexicano to you and know that you will the enjoy "true" Mexican food purveyed there. read more
