This place gets a lot of love from me for having exceptional care that's gone into their mocktail selection. Yes, the alcoholic drinks are great, too...but when out with friends that don't drink or I'm taking the night off from alcohol, this place truly delivers a great drink experience. Sit at the bar at one of the UWS's best happy hour (please don't make me regret sharing this advice) and enjoy your drink, the showmanship of the bartender and the extremely good food. I stumbled upon this gem when I left the museum of American History and I'm glad I did. First off they have a decent happy hour and they don't skimp with ingredients when making a decent drink. My recommendation: order the mezcalita. Thank me later. Now on to the food. My party and I ordered the queso fundido (very yummy), jackfruit taco and cauliflower taco. I barely got a bite of the cauliflower taco before other people at my table scarfed it down. It was tasty but apparently so tasty no one wanted to share. Same for the jackfruit taco. We ordered three for the table and apparently it was so good someone ate mine. In my defense I was busy eating my chicken mole. Now if you don't get anything there get the chicken mole. The chicken skin was nice and crispy and the mole sauce was amazing. I wanted to lick my plate clean but there would be too many witnesses, and I don't want to end up going viral. All that to say, get the chicken mole. Thank me later. And get the mezcalita and queso fundido too. Okay just get it all. The service was amazing and the vibe made you wanted to stay longer. So we did and ended up getting the tres leches for dessert. Best tres leches I've had in a while. All that to say for three people the total came out to 170.00. That consisted of for mezcalita, two jackfruit tacos and cauliflower. Chicken flautas (normal serving) and half chicken mole. Oh and queso fundido. And tres leches. Not a crumb was left behind. *some items were from the Happy Hour menu. Sooo if you want to eat good and save some coin. Go during happy hour!!! read more

Six of us - my daughter and boyfriend, his parents and my wife. We have an upstair loft area with only one other table. it felt like a private room. Very nice for a small group get together. Service was very good. This is now my favorite Mexican place in the city - in the past I have traveled as many as 17x in one year to Mexico City. And I would go here if it were in DF. Stopped in here this afternoon during a walk up Columbus--I hadn't noticed it before but it caught our eye today and I'm glad it did. When we arrived, there were only two tables available, but we were seated quickly and greeted warmly. We split the guacamole ashes, a very smoothly pureed guacamole with finely sliced onions, full cilantro leaves, a ring of chile oil and the ashes from toasting chiles. The chile oil and ashes added some nice heat and the smooth guacamole contrasted very nicely with the sliced onions and unchopped cilantro. Nice to see a different take on guacamole. I had the huevos rancheros and opted for both salsas (divorciado). They were delicious. The salsas were a good contrast in flavors, deep and smoky (the red) and bright and fresh (the green). I would definitely get this dish again, although the menu was full of temptations. My friend had the roasted tomato soup which was topped with crema, avocado, and crispy tortilla strips. It looked great and she thoroughly enjoyed it. She lives in the area and will definitely go back--next time I visit her, perhaps I'll join her. read more

My sister picked out this place for her birthday dinner. We had a great time! The food was incredible and tasted like it was made with love. I don't eat meat but they had plenty of vegetarian options. I got the enchiladas with wild mushrooms and vegan sour cream. Also, neither my sister nor me drink alcohol, but the mocktails were better than average. The flavors in their food were mesmerizing! The service was also great- everyone was friendly and our waitress was helpful without being overbearing. It was the cutest spot - there was this kind of indoor balcony seating area that I'd love to eat at in the future. The run-down floor tiles and the colorful and dirty walls reminded me of downtown Juarez cantinas. Pedro Infante hung from the walls along with vintage random pictures. The bar was attractive with the green-painted wood and the crate and metal light fixtures. Visually, the place made sense. However, the music clashed a bit, as it was mostly music from Spain and Brazil. To start with the food the quesadillas negra was deceiving; tiny but powerful in flavor. The cilantro, lime, serrano salsa was to die for. It was bright and spicy! The quesadilla was closed, like an empanada, with a delicious and soft huitlacoche filling. For our entrees, we chose the chilaquiles rojos con barbacoa and the benedictinos con chorizo. The benedictinos had a spicy hollandaise with two perfectly poached eggs. The potatoes were soft and fried in a salsa macha that gave them a nice smoky note. The chilaquiles had a salsa roja that started mild but grew quite spicy in my mouth. The beans reminded me of home. The barbacoa was closer to a brisket but the flavor was excellent and smoky. The avocado and cream were nice reliefs from the spicy salsa roja. Last but not least. The service was quite friendly from the start. I guess our faces pointed them in the right direction and they spoke to us in Spanish. They were prompt, attentive, and very friendly. Overall, this was a nice experience, a bit of home away from home with plenty of favor and comfort for the soul. read more

Stopped here for happy hour on a Tuesday and was seated quickly. They had some seating outside, but it's right on the sidewalk so we ate inside instead. The air conditioning was working great! I got the Spicy Reaper mocktail - honestly, best and cheapest mocktail I've ever had. Didn't taste like sweet juice, had a nice kick to it, and only $8! Chicken flautas were tasty, had the perfect crunch, and a yummy green sauce. My shrimp taco was filled to the brim and tasted really fresh. My favorite had to be the queso fundido with chorizo - sooooo good, it was perfect. The only things I will say are the happy hour portions are on the smaller side (as expected) and the prices aren't amazing for HH. You can tell everything is really high quality here. It was also really busy on a Thursday for lunch which is a good sign. Service was a little spotty as we had multiple people come and check on us, drinks were forgotten for a bit until we asked... But nothing too terrible. I got the tepache mocktail to start which had their house made pineapple probiotic kind of drink. It was delicious! A different flavor than I've ever had. During lunch they also had a lunch special where you could get two tacos and a side for $18. The tacos do need to be the same flavor though. I got the shrimp tacos with pickled veggies. Finally, a great neighborhood spot! A gem for sure, the back area has a fun and more adult ambiance, where the front enclosed in glass is good for kiddos as there is more space with the tables, and fun for people watching if you're facing the street. The back area has a fantastic bar that is lit wonderfully and great for date night. I've been here twice in the past two weeks, each time with a reservation. The first time we had to wait about 15 minutes despite having a reservations, but we didn't mind. There isn't a great area to wait so we were stashed a bit in front of a room where they prepare food but no worries for us. We have ordered the guac with ashes each time and that has been consistently great. The chicken enchiladas and both the barbacoa dinner platter and the barbacoa burrito served during brunch are fantastic. The hibiscus mocktail drink was refreshing as well and a great way to start -- I asked for mine with less sweetener and they did a fantastic job. I'll definitely be back and bringing friends, especially as the weather gets nicer and they open those windows! read more

Super cute little taco place near the American Museum of Natural History. The portions may look small but they were super filling. My friend and I were stuffed by the end. When we went the service was quick and everything was super clean. Beautiful decor and a good view if you sit bye the windows. I have celiac, so I need scrupulous gluten-free food. Went with my husband and another couple and we all shared the dishes (with one non-GF exception that they shared). We had the root veggie salad and esquites appetizers, chicken enchiladas, grilled fish and fish tacos for mains, and the chocolate and avo mousses for dessert (they also shared the non-GF "quesadilla" which is an empanada.) Everything was fantastic! They were knowledgeable about GF and went through the menu with me right away (nothing is marked on the menu.) GF options are limited, but the options they have GF are so good that we did not feel limited. So delicious that we vowed to go back again and get the same meal! The non-GF food also looked amazing. Dining experience is between casual and nice - great for a date or with friends. They do make a big deal over birthdays there, so be prepared to sing a bit! read more

We had reservations and came five minutes early and they had our table ready for us and sat us down. Everyone from the host to the server was amazing. The food didn't disappoint. The fish tacos, burritos, cauliflower, buñuelos, and avocado desert were incredible and the lemonade was made with freshly squeezed lemons. The place was fine. The food was good. The drinks were good. It has a nice vibe. It's a small, cute place. While the food was good, the physical environment felt kinda uncomfortable. I get it's a small space, but the tables were very close and people walking through kept bumping into other tables, etc. It kinda distracted from the experience. So, I would say this would be a fine place to come with friends, but I dunno if it's the place to take grandma and grandpa for a meal. That being said, everything about this place was fine. If you're in the neighborhood, it's a good place to visit. I dunno if I would say you need to travel cross town to come here, though. read more

Located in the UWS, this cute spot had a very welcoming vibe. Since the weather was beautiful, we decided to sit outside. We started off with the happy hour menu and got the delicious queso fundido and esquites (not on the happy hour list). I was not a fan of the esquites as it was a bit too sour for my taste. For main course we had the cauliflower and jackfruit tacos. I did not like the jackfruit tacos at all but the waiter was gracious enough to offer an alternative to my desire so I ended up getting the flautas (comes in 2 but I requested 1 only). We had delicious guacamole, esquites, to start- i went light with crudo, soup and beans and others went for veggie enchiladas and quesabirrias, all of which were satisfying. But maybe that's my mistake and I should have known. Also there are no traditional taco options - beef or chicken? There is a shrimp taco. These pork belly tacos were $20 for 3 tacos. I stand by my favorite taco place in Greenpoint that does $5 for tacos that are WAY authentic and top tier flavor. The spicy salsa for the tacos wasn't spicy, either. I think maybe I just shouldn't get tacos at sit-down restaurants. If I come back here, I'll order something else as other people seem to really enjoy this place. Was very excited to try this place out because it was on the Michelin Guide. Got a reservation beforehand but I feel like you could walk in here fine and still get a table. I will say after this experience I'm not sure if the Michelin Guide is the most trustworthy list to look at for food recommendations in the city, but I guess that is that. - Guacamole Tradicional - Yes this guacamole is really good but is it good enough to pay $15. Maybe I'm a bit delusional with the +$2 add-on with guac, but I feel a little weird that this dip was worth so much. I will say that I really liked the lemon-y flavors associated with it as well as the round chips that went along with it. - Pork Belly Mole Dulce - I think my favorite part of this dish was the crispy enoki mushrooms which literally tasted like chips, they were insane. Also, with the mole sauce, it was so heavenly - I spent majority of the time dipping the tortillas into the sauce. I also really liked the pickled red onion which cut through the heaviness of this dish but I do have to say that I wasn't the biggest fan of the pork belly because although crispy on the outside, it wasn't particularly tender. I did appreciate how filling it was though! Overall, not a bad place for Mexican food especially for the more innovative of sorts but I also don't think the quality of the food necessarily justified the high prices. read more
