4.5 stars I was visiting a friend on the Upper West Side, and we were looking for a dinner delivery place when I came across Taqueria 86. I found it odd that the restaurant was located on 94th Street, given its name, but that was irrelevant. Its reviews were excellent, and the food looked great in the Yelp photos, so we decided to give it a shot. I ordered a Grilled Chicken Burrito Bowl, which was supposed to be served in a fried flour tortilla that had been shaped into a bowl, but I, instead, opted for the ingredients to be placed in a container without the crispy vehicle. The platter included diced chicken, orange Mexican rice, black beans, lettuce, corn, pico de gallo, and guacamole. The chicken was well-seasoned and tender, the rice was fluffy, and the beans were very flavorful. The rest of the ingredients were fresh, and everything blended well together. I was allowed to select one of four sauces, though there were no descriptions to help distinguish their differences. I just selected the Red Smoky Salsa, which turned out to have a medium heat level and added notes of chipotle; I thought it was perfect. I had also asked for no queso fresco, and the crema on the side, though I wound up not using it. Overall, I was very impressed with my dish, and my friend enjoyed her Skirt Steak Burrito as well. Taqueria 86 delivered (pun intended) on flavor and quality. Next time I hope to visit the restaurant in-person to enjoy their cocktails and what looks like a fun atmosphere. read more

Walked in for lunch and were seated in a comfortable spot. The only discomfort came from the constant opening of their door on a freezing Sat afternoon and non-existent heating at this place. Got the Guacamole & Chips ($16), Puebla ($11.95) for 2, and Mushroom Tacos ($11.85) which were the best on our table. I wish they'd let you mix and match but the condition is to get two of each kind! Taqueria 86 is a very consistently solid, yet unassuming spot for Mexican food in the UWS. The decor is soccer (aka. football everywhere else) themed and the ambiance is always vibrant and fun. Overall, I enjoy the Flautas Doradas with Chorizo, Al Pastor and Toluca tacos, and Horchata and Jamaica Aguas Frescas. A note that the Toluca is definitely a heavier taco, packed with stew and potatoes, and the drinks are refreshing since they're not overly sweet. Make sure to use the spicy red sauce - it's so good on almost everything here! The staff are really attentive when you dine in, but they also package the food really conveniently for take-out. Best of all, they have a Taco Tuesday deal and the first six tacos listed on the menu are discounted. read more

Andrés was the best waiter. He made great suggestions and even brought me a taste of their molé. This neighborhood taqueria serves up fresh tacos and agua fresca. We recommend the chicken tinga and the pastor tacos and jamaica agua fresca. The corn tortillas were fresh and the place was hopping mid afternoon. The tacos are small like street tacos so I recommend ordering three each. The place has fun retro sporty decor. read more

Came for happy hour just to find out it's only mon-thur. That's the only thing i would change about this place. They're open early which is nice cause it's not crowded. The later it gets the more crowded it becomes. Taqueria is a nice spot for groups, date night, or solo. Their margaritas are STRONG! The food is equally as good. I went yesterday and they had Taco Tuesdays where u have the first 6 types of tacos on the menu were on sale and i had a passion fruit margarita and strawberry margarita and a passion fruit sangria aww man everything tasted amazing and it was made quick too. It wasnt so crowded in there and our bartender Julie was so sweet and had the best service. --Location/Parking-- Located on the upper west side. Several blocks west of Central Park. There is a subway line a block or two away. Close and convenient. --Ambience-- Mexican restaurant vibe with its colorful wall and a fully stock bar on the left side of the room. This is a great place to come after work or for dinner. --Service/Staff-- The staff was courteous and didn't mind my big luggage I had on my back. They were quick and prompt in getting my order and I ordered everything they recommended on the menu. --Food/Products-- Fresh Jamaica drink was flavorful, and I couldn't get enough of it. I couldn't explain the flavor, but I order a 2nd round. I ordered several tacos and with it came three types of sauce. A green, red, and darker red from hot to mild. I personally did not think the hot was that hot, but all of the sauces were flavorful and not bitter in taste that would distract from the food. Based on the employee's recommendation I got the Birrea taco and shrimp taco, which came with a side of lime and radish. Authentic Mexican taco that made my mouth drool. I am so glad the staff recommended the Birrea taco, which I couldn't get enough of. --Capacity-- There were several seats along the left and right side of the wall. The center of the taqueria was empty, but it was during the afternoon, in between the lunch and dinner rush. There were plenty of seats and I feel the capacity could handle a large crowd during the dinner rush. --Overall-- If you love authentic Mexican food. You can tell the staff enjoys working there are samples the food quite often based on their recommendations and what meat was been prepared for the day. On a cold early Sunday evening, I dropped into Taqueria 86 mostly because it was close, and it was too cold to go about exploring. Great choice. I was greeted and served by friendliness throughout. I had their Enmoladas - similar to enchiladas, but dressed with a chocolaty mole sauce instead of chili. 4 beautiful bundles of marinated steak cuts were fresh, tasty, and more than satisfying. What a find this place is! Really great Mexican food in a stretch of Broadway that doesn't have a lot of good options. I went with a group of 4 last night and each of us was simply wowed by the quality of the food (we got tacos, a quesadilla, a burrito and a burrito bowl). The food came out fast, was hot, fresh and delicious. They put three sauces (house made) on the table and each one is perfect, but the smoky salsa has my heart. We ended our meals with churros that were incredibly flaky and a true delight. The service was super friendly, the music was a bunch of 80s/90s bangers - you're encouraged to sing along. I've been here twice now. More recently I spent $20 on a burrito to go and it was too much. Unfortunately the burrito was good, but not as good as the previous time. Their prices have also gone up exponentially. It's a good place for authentic Mexican food and a good sit down experience, but if you are taking out or want other Mexican food... it's just too pricey for that. read more

In celebration of my aunt's birthday month, she asked that I meet with her and her friends at Taqueria 86. Apparently she's been there before and enjoyed the food and drinks. I will say that it's a nice space and the wait staff are friendly and attentive, but I was not so impressed with the food. It wasn't bad, I just wasn't inspired. We started with drinks, and since I am abstaining from alcohol, I ordered Horchata. It was good flavor-wise, but a bit grainy. Most of the table ordered margaritas, which they very much enjoyed. I overheard the waiter asking whether or not they wanted salt or Tajin or both on the rim of their glasses. I thought that was nice as most places just give you what they want to give you. We also ordered elote and guacamole. For me, both were just OK. Moving along, since it was Tuesday, it was "taco Tuesday" and while there were many options on their long list of tacos, there were also restrictions as to what was discounted for taco Tuesday. Basically anything that I would have ordered... Shrimp, steak, fish tacos were not at a discount. I ordered a shrimp quesadilla, which was cut into four, but I ate one piece as I was not excited about my food. It wasn't bad, but I wasn't excited (my taste buds weren't impressed lol). One things for certain and 2 things for sure, is Javone knows a good Baja taco. That was my plan when deciding to come here. But upon further inspection I simply didn't like that guacamole does not for standard on a taco here. That's wack. So I opted for the shrimp burrito bowl. Now this bowl was good, I admit. But I did have my heart set on a fish taco . The other thing that I liked was I was with a big group and they were able to split the bill. The only reason I did that was because nobody wanted appetizers and I wanted guac and chips and I thought it would be unfair to ask them to pay for something I wasn't sharing with the table So kudos to them. This place is amazing! We stayed at the night hotel across the way and this place was a great restaurant to have right there and perfect for a little night cap ;) the staff was great! Theresa and Julie were our bartenders, super friendly and fun! The regulars were also very friendly (sam was one of our favorites!) The owner Leo, also came the last night we were there because he noticed wed been there a few days in a row so he came to meet us and introduce himself. How cool is that? Decided to get some food to go and was pretty excited considering the positive reviews! Ordered al pastor tacos, chicken tinga flautas (they gave me tacos by mistake) birria tacos (which they forgot to put on my order for some reason), and guacamole and chips. Would have loved to give this place 5 stars, but the mistake on the overall order was disappointing. Guacamole was also not fresh at all! Had a carbonated/fizzy taste which apparently is a sign that it's spoiling or spoiled. However, the tacos I did get were still tasty. Welcoming staff awaits your visit at this bright Mexican spot steps away from busy Broadway. We went in a group of 5 on a Saturday early evening (around 5:30-6p) and the place wasn't busy. Service is efficient and personable, and restrooms are spacious. Guacamole with chips: the guacamole was a bit sour (maybe too much lemon), but still good. It's pricey, though, probably in part due to high prices of avocados these days. Tacos al pastor: plenty of delicious pork slow-cooked in tomato sauce. It's not your usual al pastor, but it's yummy nonetheless. Very filling and lots of onion (which I like). Tacos de skirt steak: the meat felt like it was a little too charcoaled... gave me the impression that the surface it was cooked wasn't fully cleaned from the previous grilling. I may be totally wrong, but the meat was too blackened. Also, not as much meat as in the tacos al pastor. Chicken quesadilla: the chicken looked overcooked as well, so I'm not sure what happened. It looked dark, black in some spots (it was supposed to be just grilled, but looked like Cajun chicken). Overall, although there were some issues with some meat, we had a fine time. Second I love the sangria but they full the glasses with ice to the top ,you really don't need a full glass of ice with sangria or any drinks, looks like I'm paying for ice instead of my drink. Haven't yelped for awhile, but the service for this place is top top notch (yes I meant to say top twice). They have a little bar as well. I had three beef tacos and a side of beans and rice. The tacos were very clean tasting (aka fresh high quality ingredients). The beans and rice were also top two I've ever had (I'm from Texas). Just clean clean ingredients cooked well and seasoned well, not too much, not too little. My only complaint would be the taco tortillas (corn). Just opened on the UWS and this place is a hit! Great neighborhood place on 94th and Broadway. Watch out, once they get their liquor license, the margaritas will be flowing and it will be packed! The food is exceptional. Nice choice of tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and tortas. All freshly made to order. Cholula Tacos come 2 to an order and the Chicken Tinga is shredded marinated chicken in a chipotle sauce and pled on a fresh corn tortilla, topped with an avocado drizzle and fresh Mexican cheese. - Yum! The steak Burrito is to die for. A crispy flour burrito stuffed with marinated skirt steak, black beans, queso, pico de gallo, and guacamole. One of the best I've had!! This place is very good but it is very expensive. Firstly, the service was actually quite amazing with being checked on and recommendations for the menu.
