I'm a California transplant that's been in New York almost a decade and will be the first to admit that two things are simultaneously true - yes, you can get good Mexican food in New York, and no, it's not nearly as ubiquitous, consistently excellent and cheap as California. So, electric burrito. This review is really for both locations because I'm a delivery burrito type of guy but my last one came from the Chelsea location so they get today's nod. Depending on your particular tastes, electric burrito is either the best or second best burrito in lower manhattan. If you, like me, ride or die for a perfect mission style Baja fish burrito then summer salt is what you're looking for. If not, electric does just about everything right. They do a better California burrito than summer salt and the orange hot sauce is fire, both literally and in the metaphorical sense. It has some real heat to it but you just keep going back. Chips are solid, 3 mins in the toaster oven will make them even more solid. They get 5 stars because it's NYC and I support good burritos in my backyard. In CA, you'd probably get a 4 for chips not being included and no smattering of free salsas to choose from. Like I said in the opener, if you've lived on the west coast then you've been spoiled by a phenomenal baseline where a quality salsa bar is table stakes. Out here, just getting good salsas even at a cost counts. By the way, we're not here to throw shade at NYC - replace the word burrito with the word pizza and the exact same opener applies to California. Can you get good pizza? Yes, but you'll pay a little more, look a little harder and won't have that quality baseline as the expectation to survive your first year in a neighborhood like you do here. read more

Service was quick, and the burrito is huge. You can likely split it with someone, pending on how hungry you are. The burrito itself tasted okay. I felt it tasted a bit bland and was very oily. The sauce on the side helped give the burrito flavor. I opted for the chorizo burrito, and there was a lot going on in there. I felt like since there was so much going on inside the burrito, all the items were competing with each other in flavor and texture, versus working together to make a great tasting burrito. Maybe a different choice will have a different result, but it just tasted bland and was mushy. If the fries were crunchy, that would help kick it up a notch texture-wise. I got a carne asada california burrito delivered from here, and it held up about as much as you could hope for that style of a burrito going through the rigors of NYC bike delivery. The fries in the burrito were still really crunchy, despite the travel, and the flavor of the steak, guac, and fries were all perfectly balanced. I've tried most items on the menu but my favorite is probably the Johnny Utah (carne asada, shrimp, beans, rice, pico de gallo, crema). Think surf and turf in a burrito form. Their burritos are always fresh and substantial in size and I love pairing it with their housemade sauce that they give on the side. Sometimes you'll run into the issue of having a ton of rice and beans and not much meat but for the price and portion, you can't beat it! Another can't miss item on the menu is their chips and guac. I would personally prefer my burrito with lettuce instead of fries -- I think it's lacking that crunch and is really unhealthy with fries. But it suppose it makes it less messy to eat because the fries soak up some of the grease. AMBIANCE: Super casual. Order, they call your number, you sit at one of the counters. Low key. Framed photographs on the walls (of things that kind of relate to California?), which features some exposed brick. SERVICE: Fast, kind. No complaints. Whatever magic their orange sauce is made of is reason alone to eat here. It is delicious and when added to their burritos or bowls just puts it over the top. We ordered delivery so I can't comment on the interior of the restaurant or the service, but the food arrived hot and within the specified delivery window so I was happy. I went with the burrito bowl with carnitas. The carnitas was very tasty and I liked the picked cabbage, it was a great addition to the dish. I didn't like the refried beans and cheese as it felt like smushed canned beans that had been microwaved and shredded cheese added on top. I used to love this place, I really did. Sad to say it has gone the way of Chipotle. Prices rise, quality and size fall. Burrito is now 2/3 of what it used to be, still the same price if not more expensive. This place used to be a great deal, huge burrito quality ingredients and good service. I've been to both locations but I personally like the Chelsea location since it is slightly more spacious and within walking distance of the Meatpacking District. But both locations serve some incredible burritos that are quite filling and have the perfect balance of meat (or chicken or shrimp), rice, and sauce. My go-to order is The Johnny Utah Burrito paired with a Mexican Coke. All the burritos they serve are quite massive so do come with an empty stomach or an appetite for these burritos that serve plenty of everything in one burrito. Another plus is that these burritos are neatly wrapped from the tortilla wrap to the double layer of wrapping so if you wish to take this to-go, you'll still have a secure and warm burrito. Based on my many trips to the Chelsea location, the cashiers are very attentive and helpful especially when there is sauce I do not want added to my order. And the service does get a bit backed up due to food delivery orders on top of in-person orders so be mindful of what time you go to this location for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I was excited for the carne asada fries, because I used to eat a similar dish back in college, but unfortunately, it also did not live up to expectations. I enjoyed all the toppings, especially the guac (although the carne was a little dry), but the fries were disappointing. They were thin and almost soggy, reminiscent of McDonald's fries that'd been sitting out for too long. I think this dish could've been really good if the fries were hot and crispy. I came for Saturday takeout lunch with my boyfriend, and we split the Carne Asada California Burrito ($15) and some chips to go with their salsa ($2.50). Everything was well executed - tender, generous portions of carne asada, and the optimal meat/carb/cheese/sauce/salsa ratio. l liked the burrito's creamy chipotle house sauce and the French fries of course!!! Saw some random dude on instagram eat a burrito from here, and what I noticed in his video is that the burrito's were GIGANTIC, so large that I knew I had to try it! I came here on a Wednesday after work. It was a bit busy. A lot of the seats were filled, but I noticed people came in and out. I was graced with a California Burrito with Carne Asada from a friend as this was my first time trying Electric Burrito. The first bite took me back to having Mission style burritos in SF so, Thank you Electric Burrito for sparking that memory again in my brain. The burrito was tasty, but the sauce it came with on the side definitely elevated the flavors of the burrito. I loved the smokiness of the sauce but wished it was a little spicier. One of co-owners took the order and is from San Francisco while her partner is from San Diego. (So, they understand what makes a great burrito.) She was very kind and the service was pretty quick which lead to a good service experience. The restaurant was cute inside but wasn't busy since my friend went right before the dinner rush. Overall, I think I'll have to personally stop by and try Electric Burrito one more time but my first experience was definitely a good one. Keep up the good job! read more
