We went here after reading the good reviews here on Yelp. My mom got the fried octopus and I got the tomato pasta with bacon (I can't remember the name) along with a basket of bread. The bread tasted exactly like Stacy's Pita Chips and was berry salty. Then the octopus was okay, but EXTREMELY salty. This is coming from someone who LOVES sat and always adds more to everything. The pasta dish was okay, but not super flavorful. The bacon on it tasted like pure salt with the pasta being very bland. Overall we were pretty disappointed and it did not live up to the reviews we read. One star for the nice atmosphere/location, one star for the service/nice owner, and one because while the food was salty, it wasn't terrible. read more

My wife found this place on Yelp just like most of the gems we do find. Yes, as a male I still found this place to be romantic. The ambience and service provided much of that effect along with the nice bottles they had in stock. Unfortunately only one type of beer. How does one even get romantic with one type of beer? Lol. Yes I know wine does the trick. I honestly believe this place will make any date more in the mood for romance. The candle light, the music the lovely paintings and absence of the tourist type tourists you see everywhere else in Rome certainly helped. The price yes leaves something to be desired but in comparison to the other restaurants, the servings were quite large and hearty. I'm a big eater and I went home pretty full with an appetizer and 2 dishes shared either my wife. The chicken leg was delicious. They warned me it was going to take 20 minutes so we ended up taking a plate of cheese and their cannot stress enough uber salted pie breads. Hypertension anyone? This was our first meal in Italy that let us down. The strozapretti with cherry tomatoes was simply too sweet and the bacon was unable to balance out the flavor. My sforno di anellini was first delivered cold in the center (proof that it was pre-made and chilled) and then, after they tried a second time, was just dry and inedible. When we walked in there was only one couple in the restaurant finishing their food. We were seated before two families that came in after us and their orders were taken before ours even after we flagged the waitress down that we were ready. My son and I were in Rome for a few days and were looking for a good neighborhood restaurant that attracted locals, not tourists. The reviews for Ristorante Sofia are dead on. We had a perfect meal there. We started with a pasta dish that was perfect (carbonara with small crispy bacon on top); then had the beef filet with balsamic vinegar and vegetable side dishes. We finished with the tiramisu, which was outstanding. The waitstaff was attentive and engaging; the head waiter/manager made great suggestions, including a perfect nero davola from Sicily by the glass. The menu is limited, true, to a half dozen dishes in each category. But we took that to mean that they only do what they can do very well. The place is small and comfortable. It was only a few blocks from our Hotel (Hotel Fellini, near Fontana Trevi). A fantastic find and would recommend to anyone. read more

We were looking forward to dinner and arrived at 10pm. It's our last night in Rome and even though the closing time of 11pm is posted multiple places they decided to close early at 10pm rather than 11pm. The restaurant was still full and tables looked like they had just been served but the two ladies working would not take another table of just two. They even had difficulty in calling a taxi. Looks like they are under staffed and not well managed. With so many wonderful options in Rome I would certainly skip this one. Ciao read more

They had a smaller menu that they have undoubtedly mastered, which should be preferred over a larger menu that most restaurants have that serve mediocre food. Their menu changes with what is in season, which shows a true, passionate chef. Do not come if you expect a cheap tourist meal. My family enjoys well prepared meals and good restaurants. We watch cooking shows as a family to relax and pick out restaurants to eat to complete our vacation. I chose Sofia based on Internet reviews. The restaurant's tone-on-tone decor provides a relaxed and contemporary, yet elegant setting which is a refreshing departure from most other Italian restaurants. Me and my wife started with a whimsical appetizer of anchovies, cranberries and currants. We also had the pasta with shrimp and the sea bass. Both dishes were excellent and were cooked perfectly. We finished with a delicious phyllo cakes and chantilly cream dessert. The wait staff are attractive and speak English fairly well which is very convenient. Brenda, Marc (from Paris), and myself had the most wonderful meal at Sofia. The food, service, and wine was fabulous. We ordered mostly fish as Marc is Jewish and Kosher. We let the owner select the wine and a great choice he made. It was a white from Sardinia which I doubt will be found in the states. This was the best meal I had in Roma thanks to those who contribute to yelp. By the way, I found out the restaurant is named for the precious dog that greets the patrons lol. One of the best meals I've had so far! 4.5 out of 5. When you are in Rome there are so many places to pick from. Most of the restaurants here are tourist traps skip the really busy places and go to the quiet areas. My husband and I went there and we talked to 4 different people there and they all said Sofia was the best restaurant they had found as well. The bread is fantastic. Their seafood is fresh, the lady that helped us said they don't even own a freezer and that they get their seafood fresh each morning. The red tuna was by far my favorite, it was delicious! My husband enjoyed the gnocchi, he said is the best he has had. I personally thought it was alright because I am not a big fan of clams. The gnocchi itself was amazing. So if you like clams get the gnocchi. For dessert we got the tiramisu and it was heaven! We also had the chocolate cake but I didn't think it was that amazing. Don't get me wrong it was good but I was so amazed by the tiramisu, it was so hard to be impressed by anything else. Great service as well and the restaurant is very clean, quiet and had a beautiful ambiance. We talked to a lady sitting next to us and she had the pork 2 days in a row since she liked it so much. I relied on my other yelp reviewers when picking this place and turns out that wasn't such a good idea this time. Ambiance? Yes. Service? Yes. Food? No. First off, I wasn't thrilled with how many things sounded on the limited menu, but I had faith because the pics from other reviewer's looked delicious. I started off with the scallops, which tasted very average and were lukewarm. Next, I went with the servers suggestion and chose the linguine with mushrooms. This was the best dish of the night but it was still average. The temperature of it also indicated that it had been sitting in the window for too long. My third course was the filet, which I had to send back because it was undercooked. I've found that in Europe they tend to undercook meat, despite how I order it, so I won't hold that against them, but it really just tasted average. Not thrilled by any of it. The service was fabulous. We had two servers (one that I suspect was the owner) and another very sweet girl. Both Spoke English very well and were lovely. However, I wouldn't go back. read more

We found this place through Yelp and because of the rave reviews decided to venture in and I am so glad we did. i love yelp, they even help you on vacation! Anyways, this was a small place (as many are in Roma) but they promptly sat us and the waitress was very friendly. My cousin likes sweet white wines so she wanted a Moscato. Very uncommon to have with dinner but the waitress wasn't weird about it and actually let us know politely that it was a desert wine which we knew and was fine with. The food was fab! Even the bread basket was delish. Our best meal in Rome was here. Sofia's mother waited on us and was a great help in our ordering. The pasta was excellent. We asked for two glasses of red wine and she suggested a 100% Sangiovese from Umbria. After one whiff and taste, we asked for the whole bottle and enjoyed it so much, I took a picture of the bottle hoping to find a way to secure some for home. As a foodie and someone who has eaten at some of the best restaurants in the world- this was by far my favorite restaurant in Rome and I would have to say my favorite restaurant in Europe all together that I experienced. The pasta was incredible- homemade and some of the freshest if not the freshest that I have ever had in my life. The pancetta in the one pasta dish I had literally melted in my mouth it was so well cooked. I can't help but laugh at the yelper who compared this amazing restaurant to Burger King in a review below mine- I can't help but question his level of sanity or whether or not he is being paid off by a competing restaurant because my experience was so completely different. I was able to enjoy meals at many Michelin rated restaurants along my trip and I enjoyed my meal here just as much if not more! I'm already planning my next trip to Europe and making sure that when I visit Rome I eat at Sofia's again. We had salads that were nothing to write home about. We each had the same pasta hoping for a real Italian treat. Unfortunately, the pasta was thick and the sauce very heavy and super salty. I was unable to finish mine due to the sauce. It's a shame because we are only here for three short days and feel like we wasted 1 hour of our time and 50 Euros. This place was also another highlight of our dining exploration while vacationing in Italy. A gem it was for sure! The place is called Sofia, because (as I found out to my surprise) there is a little cute dog that inhabits it which is the owner's of course. She literally startled me because I felt her sniffing through my legs after sitting down! Haha. Upon walking in, we noticed it is a relatively small restaurant, but beautifully decorated with paintings on the wall and white tablecloth setting. There is also an outdoor seating area as well. We opted to eat inside, but either would have been a great choice I'm sure. The food was incredible and pricing was reasonable for the quality of service/food. We enjoyed some red and white wine, fish, and pasta dishes. All were terrific. The owner was very kind and quick to serve, so A+ all around. We came here because of other yelp reviews and it didn't disappoint. We had dinner on a Wednesday night and there was plenty of room inside and outside. The waitress was incredibly nice and it was a nice respite to be in a restaurant that welcomed tourists without being a tourist trap.
