We had made reservations earlier in the day for the same night, but it didn't seem too busy either way. We looked at the menu via QR code scanning before the waiter came to take our orders. We ordered a focaccia to share. I got the carbonara and my partner got a truffle cream based pasta that I can't remember the name of. All items were vegan. As a non-vegan, I was very impressed by all the dishes! The sauce for the carbonara mimicked the creaminess and cheesiness. I wasn't the biggest fan of the "bacon" / "guanciale" - it was a bit too squishy and needed to be crisped up a bit more but that's a personal preference. Really yummy traditional Italian food made vegan, right in the middle of Rome! This restaurant is so conveniently located, it's less than 5 minutes from the Pantheon, so pretty much all major attractions are short walking distance as well. I highly recommend the pinsas, and I thought the lasagna was delicious as well. I also tried the amatriciana and cacio e pepe pastas, which were both pretty good but for vegan pasta I have to say Rifugio Romano easily does it the best so I would recommend you go there for pasta instead. This restaurant is really cute. We got the olive appetizer and it was fantastic. My husband got the lasagna and it was HOT and really yummy. I got the carbonara and whatever the veggie bacon is they use in it I would like five pounds to bring home it was sooo good. I wasn't blown away by the service but for Italy it was pretty good! My only complaint was that my carbonara came out a bit cold (I suspect it was done before the lasagna) but it was still totally fantastic. read more

Definitely not something I would order again. Additionally, I ordered the Caico de Pepe which was amazing!!! Heavy noodles, creamy and delicious sauce omg! This was the best meal I had during my trip to Rome! If I knew about this earlier in my trip, I probably would've come everyday for lunch. If you visit, I urge you to order the Caico de Pepe. Great vegan options for breakfast, lunch and dinner but in my opinion you should order one of their many pinsas which are different from pizza because the dough is fermented and lighter which makes it slightly crunchy. We had one with mushrooms and the other with chicory and they were both delicious so stop by if you're in Rome. read more

Incredible! We were in Rome for 8 days and ate here everyday, sometimes even twice a day. I tried near enough everything on the menu but the meals that outshone everything were; vegan carbonara, vegan truffle pasta and vegan truffle pizza. The staff were lovely and so friendly, every time we went in they treated us like friends, we would get free little biscuits and the staff would even teach us some Italian We tried other vegan spots in Rome but we always ended up back here! Vegan aperitivo, anyone? Oh, Buddy, how I love you. How much? Enough that I vow to next trip arrange for accommodations closer so that I may visit daily. Buddy is an absolute lifesaver for vegans looking to take a break from grilled vegetables, plain bruschetta, and pasta/pizza marinara in Rome (which, do not get me wrong, is 99% of the time delicious but we love us some variety). I had two legs in Rome and was only able to visit Buddy once, sadly. I had it on my list and then we just never seemed to be in proximity until one evening, in search of aperitivo. I swear it was like angels had sung on me that evening and we turned the corner and saw Buddy and the word "aperitivo" on their window. Yes, please! Let me note that later that night I might have been kicking myself for not ordering more because the menu is so delightful (truffle pizza with vegan mozz!) It was around 6pm, though, and I just wanted something light so I ordered off the aperitivo menu. There are a couple options and they are seasonal (the Halloween aperitivo was still available but I went for the option with chips/guac and a couple other light bites that I'm forgetting (not that they were forgettable but I can't seem to find the aperitivo menu online!) The aperitivo cost is reasonable and yes, this includes a drink. I want to say it's 11 Euro, but don't quote me on that! I also ordered an avocado bruschetta that was outstanding. They have a variety of bruschetta and I had meant to order the one with olives but no regrets because the avocado was so delicious. My rule of thumb for next time: order plenty. And don't skip out before vegan tiramisu. read more

This place is really pricey for what you get and the food is hit-and-miss. My husband liked his pizza a lot and I tried it - it was indeed yummy - however, my Buddha bowl was lacking. Not kidding- it had exactly 1 tablespoon of scrambled tofu, one small broccoli floret, and two small cauliflower florets. So what was in there? It was a bowl of grain (barley, I think, or kamut?) and chickpeas. I'd ordered it because I thought it was full of veggies, but sadly, no. Despite being near Pantheon and having decent reviews on Google, I was disappointed to be told to wait because they were full. Now I totally understand if it was full, but their definition is slightly OFF. Full as in-- their restaurant was half full, and they didn't want to break up the "big" tables to seat their only waiting guests. We were quoted by one wait staff as 3 minutes. Then another person quoted us 10 minutes since they were "full". When we started looking for alternatives to eat and eventually walked out, they were suddenly able to seat us. We eventually walked another 20 so minutes to another restaurant which gladly sat us down, and separated out the tables not just for us but for 2 other parties as well. Also, FYI those other 2 parties were just individuals dining alone so it was just a total of 4 people using 3 tables, which was really meant for 6 people. Definitely grateful we had one of the best experiences at the second restaurant because this restaurant failed our expectations. read more

Let's face it..as yummy as Roman food is and pasta is the mainstay of this Italian cuisine, sometimes you just want a salad and pizza. We had been traveling all over Italy for 2 weeks and were hankering for a light bite. This corner cafe conveniently located in the heart of Rome is adorable. They serve everything from smoothies, salads, pizzas to entrees all in a casual cafe type setting. Service is good. They have nice beer and wine choices as well. We enjoyed the green smoothie, a pizza and fresh Greek salad. Nothing fancy but it hit the spot. read more

After walking around Rome all day it was wonderful to end the day here. We were seated outside right away and the service was extremely friendly and helpful. We started with the forest salad to split. It was super fresh, a huge portion, and delicious. We both had pizzas for dinner; the white pizza with mushrooms and truffles and a margherita. This was our first stop in Italy for food. Before I totally threw in the towel on my no gluten, no dairy regimen (I paid after 2 weeks but it was worth it!). Though I realized after I ordered, I didnt ask the other ingredients and it probably had bread or bread crumbs! It was simple but very good. My husband had a pizza and it was good, not the best we had in Italy but good. I did walk through one evening to check out the dinner buffet but there wasn't a lot to it and there was nothing that really jumped out at me, so we did not eat it. As four hungry kiwi vegans, we came across Buddy by accident as we rambled our way around the Pantheon. We revisited the next day for a big late lunch/early dinner. We were blown away. The service was exemplary. The food was crazy good. So good, in fact, we committed to returning the next day. We weren't disappointed. Again, great service and the food was divine. Rome is not the most vegan friendly city. Vegan markings on groceries is really subpar and, let's face it, traditional pasta and pizza ristorantes have slim plant-based pickings. But Buddy more than makes up for this with its veganised traditional dishes. Basically, Buddy is a great place for vegans to have a great 'Roman' food experience while in Rome. I used to LOVE Buddy, but it honestly seems like the quality has gone down quite a bit. In the past they baked many of their pastries and croissants fresh but they don't really seem fresh anymore. Additionally, I ordered an açaí bowl which was gross, it was very grain/powdery which was strange and it was very warm... which was also very strange. The pineapple on top wasn't cut correctly because it had much of the core and outer part still attached. Their menu is VERY pricey (€3 for caffe). Strangely, this restaurant in the heart of Rome seems designed to cater to young US/UK travelers. Our Uber driver recommended it to us when we asked for a good breakfast spot. It's more upscale than we were wanting. We paid quite a bit for an Italian breakfast: crissont with filling, espresso, and orange juice. They seemed more focused on the smoothies and vegan items. They also offer English breakfasts, which is probably why our driver suggested it. If you want the real Italian breakfast on the cheap, I'd venture somewhere else. read more

Buddy popped up on my vegan radar the morning I was leaving Rome. I was looking for fuel to power up my day, which was going to be filled with train rides and the great unknown (like would I find food to eat in Cinque Terre?! The answer is a resounding "YES" but I didn't know it at the time). I was hoping for a pastry, something I could pack in my bag for later, but the kind server told me none of their pastries were vegan. However, they have a lot of smoothies! I figured I could stand to ingest something healthy so I had some pineapple banana concoction. While I was waiting, the server helped me with my "grazie" pronunciation, which was very sweet and I remembered throughout my trip. I took my smoothie to go and I enjoyed it. It wasn't completely smoothe, a little icy, but it was really good fuel for the day. I didn't think I'd be drinking smoothies in Rome but it was a good break from the onslaught of pizza and pasta. I stumbled upon Buddy on my way to Campo de' Fiori and decided to stop in for lunch. They had, what looked like, an amazing buffet set up, but I was too tired to wrap my head around it all and decided to just order off the menu. And I'm so glad I did! I was given two menus, one was their regular menu and the other was vegan. Even though I'm not vegan, as you'll soon see, that menu had some tasty sounding choices. I was also excited to see that they had a fairly large list of fresh squeezed juice combinations and smoothies! I ordered The Benito: Pineapple, apple, ginger, and passion fruit. First of all, it smelled amazing. Second of all, I would have happily drank ten glasses. It was so fresh and tasty.The only downside I would say is that the size versus the price didn't quite seem to match up, but that could just be the greedy American in me. For my lunch I ordered what is, hands down, the best salmon I've ever had. And I am someone who eats a lot of salmon. It's my go-to. Buddy's was served over a bed of arugula. It also came with a wedge of lemon and a sauce on the side (I don't remember what it was). Neither were needed or used because the salmon was absolutely perfect on its own. It was juicy and flavorful and the seared bits made me want to dance on the table. Is there a chance that this was all a fluke? That fate brought me to Buddy's on a day when the chef was on their A-game? Sure. But, I am more than willing to go there over and over again to find out! If you're in Rome for more than a week, there will come a point when you don't want straight up Italian food. When that time comes, run over to Buddy's. But if you end up dancing on the table, don't blame me. Unless you get some tips...then you owe me a cut. read more
