This restaurant is a gem. Best food yet in Italy. And everything was gluten free! Eating here was like eating art - especially the artichoke... absolutely amazing. The noodles were great, it rivaled some of the best Ramen noodles I've ever tasted. Service here was good. The servers were attentive and nice. It feels like an underground secret atmosphere, not too loud, so you can speak easy here. The Salmon was great, and they included squid ink as a side sauce, which was a nice surprise and made the dish memorable, and artistic. This spot was recommended by our Vatican your guide, RafaElla of Liv Tours. Very quick service here even though it was jam packed (by tourists), but it was big with lots of seating. Food came quick, the portions were pretty big: a primo piato of pasta might as well have been the main as it was so large. What stood out was the they can make anything gluten free, from pizza to pasta, etc. Our antipasto, was a fiori di Zucca--stuffed zucchini flower with mozzarella and anchovy. Very good and without even asking, they brought me a gluten free without my even asking because they remembered I inquired about GF options. I appreciated their attentiveness. Amatriciana was good and so was the GF Grigia pasta--simple but deliciously flavored with guanciale. We came here for lunch and ordered a Magherita pizza and their Diavolo pizza. Both were just okay, one was burnt. But what really soured the experience was that the waiter added a mysterious €10 charge to our bill. We caught it and argued with him & he said he could refund us €5 but a €5 tip is required due to "something with the owner". We ended up letting him keep the €5 because we were confused and in a rush, but walked away feeling scammed. This was my favorite meal I had in Rome!! It was the best gluten free pizza i had ever had, the sauce was sweet and flavorful and it had the perfect amount of cheese. Very disappointed and angry, we left feeling like scammed tourists. We came here because we have some tricky food allergies and this restaurant came up multiple times as a highly rated allergy friendly restaurant. It was gluten free friendly but in our experience NOT generally allergy friendly. First were seated on the corner table of the busy sidewalk, and had to request a table in a less busy thoroughfare. This was not a big deal. But then the waiter acted harried and impatient while taking our orders. After explaining our food allergies, we felt pressured to order the catch of the day as one of the only options despite other dishes looking good, like the salmon or pork special. The fish itself wasn't good either. The waiter cleaned it at the table poorly, the texture was wet and mushy like it was too old, and it and under seasoned. Also there were no sides included. Then when we got the bill we realized it was priced per pound (not made clear to us when the waiter suggested it) and was triple the price of the other fish plate on the menu, so we were shocked at the price. We had to dash to make our tour time so I just paid and left. Not only would I not recommend this place, I would actively discourage anyone from eating here. read more

We stopped here for lunch during the week around 2pm and were able to dine outside. They have a separate, all-vegan menu that you have to ask for. My wife & I split a couple pizzas, a Capricciosa (artichokes, mushrooms, and vegan salami of some sort) and a Fume vegan (smoked cheese and spek, a type of smoked ham, vegan of course), €13 each. We also got a side salad (€7), pretty lame really, as it was just some leaves, 4 slices of tomato and shredded carrots -- you dress it yourself, as per standard in Italy (and many places in Europe). Both pizzas were quite large and very filling, with the flavours and textures balanced well. Good bases and crusts, on the thicker side. Very friendly and astute service. I visited La Soffitta Renovatio for lunch on my recent trip to Rome, before heading to the Vatican nearby. I heard very good things about their gluten-free pizza and pasta so I was excited to try this place out but sadly my expectations were not met. By the quality of my food, I felt like I had been transported from Italy to Stoke On-Trent. Upon arriving at the restaurant, the point where to queue for a table was unclear, Firstly I went inside before being told to go back outside to be "checked in", after explaining to the waiter that I wanted to sit inside, I was then directed to wait somewhere else before being escorted back downstairs to my table a few minutes later - I felt like a Yoyo and would have preferred to just be in one place. It just left me feeling awkward. During my time in Rome, I wanted to try out a Cacio e Pepe, a traditional pasta dish from the Lazio region which includes Rome, my guest opted for a Margherita, we both ordered our food gluten-free, so I could try a bit of both. The pasta was dreadful, it was just so bland and dry, the pasta itself just didn't taste good and even the pepper and the sauce just couldn't save it and make it edible. The pizza was equally as bad, there was a lack of cheese and I originally thought they'd made the wrong order. The toppings again had no flavour, and the base was dry and gritty, I needed water just to stomach it and the dried rice from the flour was just leftover in my hands. Service seemed quick enough but neither attentive nor overly friendly. The chairs inside the restaurant were also incredibly uncomfortable, this is a trend I noticed during my time in Rome, I had to stand up multiple times during my meal just to get out of the discomfort. I'm not sure if they were having an off day or if there's a more glaring problem, as I also noticed the diner next to me being displeased with her pizza, where she was just taking the meat off and left pretty much everything - I noticed the gluten-free flags in this diner's food too - the only thing I liked about this place was the flags for gluten-free, but given how bad the pizza and pasta was, you'd know they were gluten-free on first bite anyway. I really wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, as unfortunately my excitement was met with regret and fury. 1* read more

Very hot day out when our group found this place with outdoor seating as well as basement seating with air conditioning. The English was partially in English and the staff seemingly all knew enough English that we had no issue. They take credit card. Everyones's meal was good, except the pizza was 'wet' (oil, maybe some grease as there was a lot of cheese) the ox tail was good, but as expected, very small portions. I was excited to find a restaurant so close to The Vatican boasting a full gluten-free menu. They were open all afternoon, so we didn't worry about making reservations as we were planning on dining early. We arrived around 5, and they were only seated outside, and we got a table immediately.  Service afterward took a really long time, even just to get water. I think we sat for about 30 minutes before finally waving someone over and requesting water. The menu is pretty substantial with gf pastas, pizzas, and calzones. Though the stuffed pasta like ravioli was not gf. The husband of mine ordered a normal calzone (not gf), and I had the lobster pasta and swordfish specials.  Food took a really long time again (even compared to normal Italian restaurant timing), and his calzone came out about 15 mins or more before my pasta. The gf pasta was clearly homemade, which was quite impressive, and there was a large lobster split down the middle. It was very messy and awkward to eat ig- cracking the shell and trying not to get it into the pasta, and the sauce was not very flavorful so I wouldn't get it again if I was returning. The swordfish; however, was delicious. Seasoned well, perfectly cooked, and very flavorful. The husband also enjoyed his calzone. I read great reviews about the gf pasta here, and maybe I just didn't order the right thing, but it definitely wasn't my most memorable gf pasta of the trip. The variety of gf options, though, was quite impressive and the fish excellent, so I'd definitely recommend trying this place out and maybe going for a pizza or calzone. read more

I had an early dinner at La Soffitta Renovatio on 8/8/2022 after a visit to the Vatican. We found the restaurant through the Find Me Gluten Free app and would say this was one of our favorite restaurants in Rome. We were seated right away and everyone was very friendly. The ambiance is casual and could be a nice spot for lunch as well as dinner. GLUTEN FREE TIPS* The staff is very knowledgeable in gluten free dining and they offer all of their pastas in a gluten free version! It's common that a restaurant offers a single pasta (such as a penne) and then can use that pasta to make any of the dishes, however La Soffitta has a one to one matching for all of their pastas and it was amazing! My husband tried both and could not tell the difference. I would highly recommend this restaurant even if you aren't gluten free, as the food is great and the service is wonderful, and it's in a great location to all of the sites. *As of November 2021 my reviews are written from a celiac, gluten free perspective. Two years ago, we were in Rome for Easter. I needed to eat in a gluten-free restaurant and so we reserved a table here for Sunday dinner. We were NOT disappointed. Upon arrival we were treated like royalty. Even though we did not speak Italian, the waiter helped us as best he could and asked us to trust him, so we did. We had the most delicious lamb and vegetable dishes such as roasted Jerusalem Artichokes that were out of this world. The wine was fantastic. The restaurant was cozy, and the couple next to us (Italians) also made us feel welcome by using Google translate to explain things to us. We were so grateful to them! The servers made sure everything was safe for me to eat. From appetizers to dessert, everything was top notch. The next port on the cruise was Rome. We booked a private tour to take us around to popular tourist attractions including the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum. Our guide Federico took us to a popular local restaurant La Soffitta Renovatio. My family and I ordered a few things to share. We got two Supplí's and a Margherita pizza. My dad loves Arancini so we decided to try Supplí which is similar to Arancini except it only has Arborio rice, sauce and mozzarella. They were really crispy, hearty and sweet from the sauce in the middle. The Margherita pizza is cooked with a wood fire oven. It was doughy and sweet from the sauce. For my meal I wanted to try Cacio e pepe which is a popular Roman pasta dish. Cacio is pasta mixed together with grated cheese and freshly ground black pepper. The word 'cacio' means cheese in Roman dialect. The pasta was made in house and was Al dente which literally means to the tooth but with pasta basically means its firmer. The sauce was creamy and peppery perfect for cold rainy days. I would highly recommend coming here to have a traditional Italian meal. read more

In my three days in Rome we ate here twice... and my wife and I love to try new places. My wife is celiac so we got everything gluten free. Recalling what we ordered it was the special pasta with mussels (ordered this both times we were there), a Parma ham pizza, a mozzarella and cherry tomato pizza, Arancini, and mozzarella and ham appetizer. For dessert we had a cheesecake which was great but the day before we had a chocolate orange cake that was amazing. The waitstaff was friendly and knowledgeable of celiac/gluten. My husband and I loved this restaurant! We made a foolish decision and walked in without a reservation. Somehow they fit us in. What followed was fabulous service and amazing food ! We first ordered the artichoke Roman style , and the supplì for appetisers. Amazing ! The artichoke was the best I've had so far, the supplì was crunchy on the outside and so creamy saucy delicious on the inside. Such a hidden, little gem close to the Vatican (but outside of the tourist trap area). My husband and I had an intimate wedding in Rome - they have a small room downstairs for private parties/large groups, which was perfect. The pasta was the perfect consistency - dense, and not chewy, the produce fresh and the meats/seafood delicious (as I heard). I'm vegetarian, but everyone else eats everything - they easily accommodated and had an extensive gluten free menu too. What really stood out here aside from the food was the service. We had a v sweet Bangladesh waiter (can't remember his name unfortunately but have his pic!) who graciously waited on all 18 of us, and when he found out it was my niece and nephew's birthday, he literally squealed, and got the managers/owners, who came in w a cake w a firecracker candle and sang happy birthday and gave Kinder eggs w toys in them (kids love these, and they're not cheap!). First class, genuine warmth and hospitality. My husband and I are avid cyclists, and have frequented the best Italian having lived in SF/NY - we love good carbs :) But, this was truly a special meal that will not be forgotten. TOURIST TRAP! This was the first bad meal we had in Italy. Milan, Bologna, Florence, then this. The service was abrupt with bus boys bringing the food and dropping it without a word. Didn't pour the water, nothing. Meals were out in 10 minutes and looked like it. Neither entree was hot, but like warm. The salmon steak was dry, the potatoes had no flavor. The pasta was actually undercooked; not all dente, but crunchy. The Carbonara was flavorless except for salt. The beer was 3/4 full at best and the waiter was like a ghost. This was our favorite meal in Rome, and how lucky for us that it was our last night! We chose it because it's near the apartment we rented, and we were all so tired of walking. We got there early, by Rome standards, so our expectations may have been low. Also, it was about a block from the Vatican so we were a little worried that it would be a tourist trap. Our waiter Christian immediately started entertaining us with his friendly jokes and theatrics, even though there was a bit of a language barrier. We told him that one member of our party didn't eat dairy and he elbowed him, gave him a knowing nod and implied "me, too". We ordered simply (I mentioned our expectations were low). For example I ordered an ensalata mista and homemade pasta with tomatoes, basil and pecorino. Christian acted like we were breaking his heart by not ordering the grilled chicory with roasted garlic, so a few of us did. I stuck to my ensalata choice though. Things came out in stages and Christian was very entertaining and theatrical about serving things family style, since we had implied we wanted to share. We had read that the owner's wife was from Portugal and so we were excited to see handwritten specials of the day. We tried a swordfish special which was absolutely amazing- rolled up, tender, not at all dry, stuffed with breadcrumbs and herbs, with amazingly fresh cooked tomatoes around it. Another special we tried was a roasted porcini mushroom dish- it was supposed to be a second course with ham, but he turned it into a starter with no ham so our vegan could try it (after dramatically running over to another part of the room and proudly bringing us a mushroom the size of his head for us to smell!), and it ended up being delicious! The ensalata mista ended up being arugula, bacon and cheese, so delicious! The perfect green accompaniment to our entree selections. Speaking of green accompaniments, Christian brought us sides of steamed spinach with lemon to squeeze on top. So good! And I can't forget the "pizza bread" as he called it- basically Napoleon style pizza dough, and instead of toppings there was olive oil and salt. Delicioso! The wine we tried was also amazing. The pasta dishes we got were to die for- thicker, chewier, al dente spaghetti noodles with the simplest, freshest ingredients on top. I will be dreaming about that pasta. The vegan said his risotto was good, but I didn't try due to so many other amazing dishes! Finally, as we were finishing up, Christian looks over at us and his whole face lit up. He raced over to another side of the room and grabbed an enormous bowl of peaches. We looked at each other, wondering what was happening. A few minutes later he came over and said he'd made us something special for dessert. He enthusiastically gave us each a martini glass, then went and got what he'd been working on. It was delicious, ripe peaches tossed in a little sugar and maybe some kind of liquor. He walked around the table serving us. It was absolutely amazing and the perfect way to end a delicious meal. I would highly recommend this restaurant, and I hope you get Christian as your server- he made the meal so fun an a wonderful memory! Don't go hoping for a quick bite, but rather for a (seemingly) authentic Italian experience. After being burned at another supposedly authentic place in this same Vatican neighborhood a few nights prior we were absolutely blown away by La Soffitta Renovatio!
