WOW. WOW. WOW! Do not miss this restaurant! My husband researched restaurants for months leading up to our visit to Italy. Trattoria Pennestri was at the very top of our list & it did not disappoint! The restaurant is quaint, I'd say 12-15 tables, FILLED with local Romans, just off work, ready for a laugh, a great wine & tasty bite. The waiter informed us that the menu changes seasonally. We ordered the onion tart, Cacio e Pepe & Amatriciana. The onion tart knocked our socks off! I asked our waiter for lessons! The cacio e pepe was the best I had in our entire visit. The Amatriciana made me husband a believer! We both went home with full bellies! Cannot recommend this place enough! Go & let me know what you end up ordering!

Think of a leisurely three hour dinner, where every dish just delights the senses. Definitely get the chocolate mousse is dessert and don't be shy to ask the kitchen to make any classic pasta you might be interested in. The service is top notch and makes all the difference. Never felt rush, perfect wine pairing, and fresh ingredients. It's in a bit of an area outside of the main neighborhoods visitors are likely to stay but worth the trip.

Outstanding food, wonderful ambience, excellent service all at a very reasonable price. The best meal I've had in my vacation in Rome thus far. This is a "Slow Food" restaurant meaning all ingredients are locally sourced and fresh and the owners are dedicated to preserving authentic Roman/local cuisine. The eggplant caponata and rabbit with mixed vegetables were both delicious. The roast duck was perfect, cooked medium rare, and paired nicely with the wine suggested. The tripe was a daily special and THE best tripe I've ever eaten. (I guarantee that even if tripe is not your thing, you would like this!) The pastas were all delicious and perfect. The waitstaff were all very attentive asking how we liked their food without being annoying. I will definitely come back and highly recommend this gem of a restaurant to anyone visiting Rome!

A whole villa to cater to your every appetite, you can't help admiring the architecture of the place. And when you seat down, you find an interesting menu with plenty of options, some of which are bold enough that you can't pass. Prosciutto&olive-wrapped mozzarella, with grilled veggies? A bit too salty, as is expected when you cook ham, but tasty. I also enjoyed the mini-fried-calamari, the right size and quantity to open up the stomach without becoming overwhelming. Portions are not overly generous but prices are also very moderate, you're really tempted to order away and then share with the rest of the table. Unless you're in the mood for pizza, because that's the exception that confirms the rule: incredibly large but thin, with the classic crispy border you can expect from Roman cuisine. The entrees are probably a better choice, with both seafood and meat creations. My grilled and breaded squid was light and delicious. The service is fast, with a smart button to push when you need to call the waiter, and they accept credit cards, but not Amex. All in all, always a pleasant experience, but I do tend to enjoy the ambiance more than the food itself. Eating outside in the terrace with the good season is an experience in itself, and the fact that the bar is well stocked doesn't hurt either.

At first when we arrived at Sofia's we were skeptical since the restaurant was completely empty (this was around 6pm). But then we realized that europeans tend to have dinner after 8pm (the restaurant filled up around that time). So don't hesitate to go inside if it's looking a little empty! What we had: Focaccia Bread - Possibly the best bread we had in Italy. It was made fresh and very well seasoned. Seabass carpaccio - light dish that was very well balanced. Duck ragu - omg this was beaut. Highly recommended Pasta with bacon? - pretty good as well but wasnt as good as the duck ragu. Duck breast with salad - cooked to perfection and all the flavors were very well balanced. Beef fillet - it was also cooked to perfection. The sauce complimented the dish very well. Overall, i wish we had the opportunity to eat here again rather than trying other restaurants that werent even half as good as this place.

As a Southern American trying to navigate Rome, I'm still completely confused. I cannot for the life of me figure out north vs. south or east vs. west in this city. Every street somehow looks historic, beautiful, and exactly the same. By 9 PM, after walking more than 10 miles today and standing in countless lines -- one for over an hour -- I was exhausted. I was close to my hotel and started looking for somewhere to eat. I had already passed Sofia earlier and really didn't want to backtrack even a few blocks. But after going the wrong direction again and somehow ending up right back near it, I figured that was a sign. So, Sofia it was. My ordering skills in Italy are still not exactly professional level. I really need a local Italian to help me. Yeah, I'm slow... remember, I'm from the South. I ordered the Mezza Maniche Carbonara. I mean, you can't really go wrong with noodles, cheese, and pork, right? A few minutes after ordering, they brought out this little appetizer-looking thing that I'm still confused about. It was this tiny little ball about the size of my thumb. I took one bite and it was absolutely delicious. Honestly, I'm not even sure I want to know what was in it, but at that point I was hungry enough not to ask questions. Then the pasta arrived. Drumroll... First bite? Absolutely divine. Rich, creamy, cheesy pasta with perfectly cooked pork mixed throughout. Fantastic. I devoured the entire plate, chased it down with a Coke, grabbed my glass bottle of water, and walked down the street carrying it like a Roman wino. Great food, great atmosphere, and a perfect little outdoor dining setup on one of Rome's tiny city streets

After this round of entries here are the main courses: my Jerusalem's filled chicken with rice, pine seeds and cinnamon was amazing, but they serve also a shawarma plate, a good beef, cous cous and some pasta dishes. A pita bread turned out to be a standard bun (seemed industrial to me). The cutlets seemed like they had been taken out of a supermarket. Then we had a vegetable cous-cous and a "baccalà alla romana". The cous-cous came in a tiny plate and had only a few vegetables in it. It must have cost less than 1 euro to make, and was priced 8 euros on the menu. The baccalà had the sauce which was almost raw, practically uncooked, with random raisins and pine nuts thrown in, and a couple of olives which did not mix at all, giving the experience of a dish prepared by arranging a few ingredients with no binding whatsoever among them. A bit pricey, too, given the quality.
