    Bruschetta
    Shawn H.

Possibly our absolute favorite in Rome. The meats/cheeses sampler was new to us this trip and really amazing. The bruschetta and eggplant parm were also new to us and both basically perfect -- we didn't order the bruschetta until we saw it going by and I'm so thankful we pulled the trigger. The pizza here is about as good as it gets for this style. The gricia is one of our favorites, although the guanciale was slightly less crispy this time. And of course the maialino is one of my favorite dishes anywhere in the world -- if there's any problem with it, it's that it comes after so much other incredible food that I'm barely even hungry for it, but it's just so perfect. We also got the pistachio cake for dessert, which was amazing and I'd need to get that again.

We had an amazing lunch. I'd recommend the lard with honey, the white wine from Sicily, the pasta and the cod which paired amazingly with the garlic potatoes. This is a 3rd generation family restaurant and their hospitality is first class.

I'm writing this review from the perspective of dining at La Tavernaccia during our last pre-COVID visit to Rome. We had an apartment near Stazione di Roma Trastevere (the Trastevere trains station), and our landlord recommended La Tavernaccia to us, which was a short walk from our flat as well as a #8 tram stop. Our first meal here was pranzo (lunch), and we returned a couple of days later for cena (dinner) on our last Sunday in Rome. We arrived for pranzo about 10 minutes before opening time, but we were seated promptly and provided menus. The overall experience was excellent. Our favorite dishes that day were Maialino al forno con patete (roasted suckling pig served with fried potatoes) and Petto di vitello alla Fornara con patate (slow roasted veal brisket with potatoes) -- both were awesome. The wine list was very good, and we shared a bottle of 2016 Arnaldo-Caprai Montefalco Rosso -- one of favorite wines. When we returned for cena on Sunday, the restaurant was fairly packed, and we were seated next to a four-top of twenty-something Brits. Nothing against the Brits, but this group had evidently been drinking heavily. They were loud and crude. This distracted from our overall dining experience. Our food again was excellent, as was the casa rosso (house red wine) that we shared. Our server apologized repeatedly for the adjacent table. La Tavernaccia is definitely a restaurant that where we will have pranzo on our next trip to Rome ... in 2021 or 2022. We hope that they fare well during the current pandemic. Service is great! Food is terrific.

Up near the railroad station, around the corner a pretty place with home cooked fare. Worth looking for!

no photo of the veal but pictured here is the rabbit!

Good and service was amazing! We came in before 3 pm as they were about to close to get ready for dinner. They still let us in and we are grateful since we haven't eaten for the day busily roaming around the city. My husband and I went to Travestere to get out of the tourist spots and try authentic Roman cuisine and this place is surely highly recommended! We ordered the wild boar pasta, the veal with potatoes and rabbit! It was very good!

One of the best meals of my life. Treated like family from the moment we walked in the door. The food was absolutely amazing. This place is a must if you're visiting Rome. We had our Easter Dinner here. Did not disappoint.

Handwritten menus, hand crafted pasta, freshly shaved cured meats and a friendly staff served up in a modern clean restaurant. A location friendly for both locals and foreign ex pats, this gem just South of the main center of the city is worth the short taxi ride to have what was my 2nd best meal in Rome. It's slightly ironic that there is a McDonald's restaurant right across the street and that there were people eating there, when they could have been eating some of the finest fish, pasta and of course the house special lasagna. You will want to tell the waiter when you sit down to reserve you a healthy portion before it runs out, as it usually does early in the night. In contrast to many of the other restaurants I dined in, this location filled every table early in the night. This is not a dig on the other restaurants which are excellent in themselves but speaks to the level of quality and the experience you will receive here. The portions were much larger then I found in other restaurants in the city but not too large like American style eating. Staff was friendly and willing to exercise what little English they could speak mixed with Italian to help us navigate through the menu and pick the best for our nightly experience. Our only mistake was to order a bottle of wine not from the region and therefore the waiter did not have good knowledge of the selection we made. We should have ordered a caraffe of the local wine as we did everywhere else and it would have made the night perfect.

This was low-key our favorite meal during our most recent Europe trip. For starters, be sure you make a reservation online in advance! We booked a table for right when they opened, and when we left, there was quite a crowd outside waiting for a table, despite the weather being a little cold and rainy. Venue: 5/5 The building (inside) was rather rustic, and the restaurant was well lit and well decorated with wine bottles everywhere (I'm assuming they're available for purchase.) In the front, they have their appetizers on display, and there is a dessert display to show what is available for the day. Food: 5/5 Their food was as good as advertised. Ciauscolo salami bruschetta: Unlike what we Americans think of when we hear "salami," this salami is soft. The flavor isn't too different though. It was decent; nothing to write home about. Bufala mozzarella: On par with the mozzarella from other restaurants in Rome. It came with a side of tomatoes and pickled peppers, which were delicious. Spaghettoni with gricia: This tasted like cacio e pepe with guanciale, or cured pork jowl. Pasta was solid, as expected. The pecorino and guanciale were okay. Fettuccine with porcini mushrooms: This dish was fantastic. As mushroom-lovers, we were stoked to try fresh porcini mushrooms for the first time. The pasta was well made and had a perfect texture, and the sauce was subtle enough to allow the mushrooms to shine in this dish. Oxtail with tomato and celery sauce: Our favorite dish of the night, the oxtail was cooked so well that it fell right off the bone. The meat was tender, flavorful, and moist, and the sauce was a perfect complement without overpowering the meat. Tiramisu: The best tiramisu we had in Italy this time around. Everything was immaculately made, from the rum-soaked lady fingers at the bottom on up. While they also had a passion fruit dessert available, we were glad that we chose this one. Total damage of all this along with two orders of wine came to ~70€ for two, which we found to be quite reasonable, given the amount of food we ordered. Service: 5/5 Our waitress spoke English and was incredibly helpful to explain everything on the menu and make sure we had everything we needed. Overall, this place was quite the gem. Would recommend it to anyone visiting Rome!

My husband and I were the first to arrive at the lunch hour opening of the restaurant. For the first 10 minutes, we were the only two people there. It appears to be the spot for locals. The people who came in after us were greeted as if they were old friends. My husband and I received no greetings. I brushed it off as us being newbies. Complimentary bread and olive oil were served. I ordered a glass of wine, and my husband and I shared a caprese salad. It was more than enough for two. I ordered the oxtails and my husband ordered the rabbit. My husband got exactly what he ordered and so did I. There was nothing to compliment our meals. Just the meat itself. Both dishes were tasty; however, I received approximately 1 1/8 oxtails on my plate. I wanted to rate this restaurant 5 stars. The food was delicious, but the portion was too small for me. I left the restaurant feeling somewhat unsatisfied.

The space is warm and inviting, and filled with locals during lunchtime. I was the only non Italian speaker every time I went at lunch. Dinner crowds were much more international with virtually every language spoken in the dining room. The wait staff are all warm, friendly, and professional. I can't decide what my favorite dish was, it's a tie between the wood oven roasted veal, with the tastiest crunchy skin served alongside garlic roasted potatoes for 13 Euros or $15 US, or the moist wood oven roasted suckling pig redolent with rosemary and garlic, 13 Euros or $15 US, or the most tender succulent tripe I've ever eaten for 12 Euros or $13 US, or the meltingly luscious eggplant parmesan with a crackly crust, 10 Euros or $12 US. The easier decision is the winner of my favorite in side dishes because after I tasted the chicory with garlic and red pepper, dressed in olive oil and lemon, I ordered it every time with every meal, 5 Euros or $6 US. The price for a very good quarter liter of wine was only 2 Euros or $2.50 US, which was also the cost of a liter of water, all the main courses ranged from 10-13 Euros or $12-$15 US, and the sides were 5 Euros or $6 US. They have pizza at night if you want a classic Roman version, and an espresso is only 1.5 Euros or $2 US. All my four meals were about 20 Euros or $23 US for a main, side, wine, and water. The best thing about a neighborhood place like this is that they all welcomed me like family after my first visit, and I made friends with people at the neighboring table, who shared two meals with me there. If you only eat one meal in Rome, eat it HERE!

    Roasted pig.

Make sure to try the roasted pig...it was delicious...skin was super crispy and the meat was super tender. Only reason why I'm giving it 4 stars is because the grilled squid we had was just ok - it was a bit rubbery.

Roasted pork, great flavor but skin can be rubbery.

After an unsuccessful stop in Rome to visit favorite restaurants, my bf and I went out of our way to visit La Tavernaccia. Reading reviews and a CN Traveler "must visit" list I was a bit spectacle, and couldn't really shake the feeling of regret. We started with the fresh mozzarella di buffalo with fresh tomatoes. This was the best part of our meal along with the house wine. To start we had their carbonara- spaghettoni with guanciele and Pecorino cheese. While the guanciele was thick and crispy and the spaghettoni was fresh, it was very salty. Sadly it made it a bit difficult to finish the plate. As entrees we had the suckling pig and the lamb. The flavor profile on the pork was strong, juicy and perfect with the roasted potatoes. While I can easily see why it's a huge favorite, I do have to make a complaint that the skin. Since it's oven cooked, and I can imagine for a while as it's very tender, the skin remains rubbery. Such a disappointment because it was thick enough to make for great crunchy chicharrones had it been fried. Unlike the pork, the lamb completely fell on flavor. Like the pork the entree was huge, but didn't have enough to make us want have more. My bf left his entire meal, which was pretty heartbreaking as the Nonna of the establishment seemed very worried! All in all, I've had better in Rome and was disappointed to go out of way. Do book a table in advance and avoid the wait. Service can be a little slow, so I definitely recommend starters.

My family and I started with the prosciutto and buffalo goat cheese served with oil and pepper, which was my favorite part of the entire meal. We also ordered a pretty good vegetable lasagna, a chicken dish with a delicious sauce, and two gnocchi dishes, including a carbonara-style one. Everything came out quickly, and there were unique items displayed around the restaurant that you could try and buy, which made the experience even more fun. We were so full from the appetizer that we only ate about half of the gnocchi. The owner noticed and kindly refunded those dishes, saying we should not pay for something we barely touched. That level of thoughtfulness is rare and left a huge impression on us. Overall, Masto is an amazing restaurant with fantastic food, quick service, and some of the kindest staff you will ever meet. I would DEFINITELY recommend it to anyone visiting Rome.
