My family and I started with the prosciutto and buffalo goat cheese served with oil and pepper, which was my favorite part of the entire meal. We also ordered a pretty good vegetable lasagna, a chicken dish with a delicious sauce, and two gnocchi dishes, including a carbonara-style one. Everything came out quickly, and there were unique items displayed around the restaurant that you could try and buy, which made the experience even more fun. We were so full from the appetizer that we only ate about half of the gnocchi. The owner noticed and kindly refunded those dishes, saying we should not pay for something we barely touched. That level of thoughtfulness is rare and left a huge impression on us. Overall, Masto is an amazing restaurant with fantastic food, quick service, and some of the kindest staff you will ever meet. After shopping at Porto Portese, we walked to this Testaccio neighborhood to taste their blueberry risotto among other items. We arrived as soon as they opened, and the Chef was very friendly and offered some samples of cheese including his burrata, which was incredible! Everything we sampled was delicious! We arrived as a group of 12--without a reservation--and were welcomed with such kindness and ease that it felt like coming home. I had chosen Masto after reading glowing reviews online, hoping for delicious, authentic Italian food. Not only did it live up to the hype, it surpassed it. The food was phenomenal. We started with a beautiful charcuterie board and tastings of cheese paired with a divine truffle sauce. Every bite was a testament to the love and care they put into their food. The lasagna, ravioli, eggplant Parmesan, and gnocchi carbonara were all absolutely delicious--rich, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. To top it off, we enjoyed a wonderful selection of wine, decadent chocolate, tiramisu, and a smooth pour of limoncello. It was the kind of meal that lingers in your memory long after the plates are cleared. Emiliano and his staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed and cared for. Their hospitality was genuine, thoughtful, and deeply appreciated. Masto is just as good as we remember! My husband I were here the last time we were in Rome, & made a return visit. It was nice to be remembered by Emiliano, & were we're sorry not to see Rita. We had a charcuterie plate that was delicious. I had a glass of Montepulciano, & Dave had a glass of crisp white wine . Both paired very well with our gnocchi. Out of all the great food in Rome Masto just made the top of our list. Rita was the first to greet us and she couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful. We started with eggplant parm, then lasagna and a mushroom risotto. All were amazing. Rita also gave us tastes of cheese with a balsamic glaze, olive oil and chocolate. This beautiful, little restaurant was a highlight of our trip! We tried a good bit of the menu, and there isn't a thing I wouldn't recommend. But the star of the show is Rita, the owner. Apparently, she hand-chooses everything in the restaurant, and her passion is contagious! She was flitting around the store, chatting with every table and bringing samples of food and drinks that we just had to try. If you get to meet her, your day will be better for it! Our server, Ava, was great as well! She was attentive and speaks 3 languages. The restaurant is small and was bustling for a weekday night in the winter. I'd imagine any other time, there might be a wait, but it would be worth it. We had: *Meat and cheese sampler- Loved it! *Blueberry risotto w/ blue cheese- Blueberry flavor was muted, but the Gorgonzola fondue was amazing *Gnocchi carbonara- The gnocchi was perfect! This was a magical experience we won't soon forget. We happened upon Masto truly by accident, and it ended up being one of our best dining experiences in our month-long stay in Rome. It's on a nicely tree-lined street in Testaccio, very far from the throngs of tourists. It has a very cool vibe inside and a comfortable outside seating area. Our server Maria was just a delight. So warm and friendly. We miss her already. She first brought us a tasting of Parmesan bites with a small drizzle of truffle infused aged balsamic. Wow! There were four of us and we sampled pretty well across the menu - gnocchi, different braised meats, and salt cod in tomato sauce. All were outstanding. The risotto was definitely the best of the two and had a very unique, savory taste despite the use of blueberry and the cheese was not overpowering. Ambiance (4/5): this is one of those cute street side cafe restaurants. Very pretty but also very packed. It's practically impossible to bump into people when you're sitting near the street. LOVED this place. My husband found it on the map and was intrigued by the menu. So we trekked 10 min in the cold to get there and was not disappointed by the food or hospitality of the place. The food was on point for every dish. We had the mixed meats and cheeses which didn't last us much, the selection was perfect. Then for 2nd course, my husband had the blueberry risotto, I had the carbonara gnocchi, and my father in law the roasted beef. All of which were savory and well cooked with no complaints from anyone at the table. The best part of the meal was the hospitality of Rita the owner. Emiliano was welcoming, witty and gave some great recommendations. There was a little wait since we didn't make any reservations anywhere and Rome is busy if you want great food. We were so lucky to get a table for five for lunch here after the flea market at Porta Portese. Our hostess Rita was amazing and was a wonderful guide for wine and food. Started with buffalo mozzarella and charcuterie followed by two bottles of red later with blueberry gorgonzola risotto, Barolo braised beef, gnocchi alla cacio e pepe. My husband and I learned about this little restaurant on a Food Tour we took through Rome. On this tour, I won a free glass of wine to redeem on a different visit, so we knew we were going to be back. We went later that same evening for dinner and shared 2 of Masto's 3 lasagnes. We had the ragu and asparagus lasagnes and they were both amazing. The asparagus lasagne was, arguably, my favorite dish I had while in Rome on our 10 day trip. To end the meal, we shared a black cherry tart and it was very good. All of the food and wine at this restaurant was exceptional and was priced well for the quantity and quality of the food we received. We ended up buying our souvenir bottle of olive oil from this location. (We spent 32 euro total, including 1 glass of wine for my husband and the bottle of olive oil.) The staff here was, also, super friendly. No one seemed to speak English very well, but they seemed to understand us and put more effort into communicating with us than staff at other restaurants. (To be honest, you know the food has to be good if they don't speak English very well--it's not a tourist trap.) This place is so wonderful! We wandered in without a reservation, not realizing how small the space is, but the woman (who may also be the owner?) there was able to accommodate us and I'm so glad. Our waitress was so kind and navigated us through the menu, so we ended up with wine, a beautiful board of meats and cheeses to start, two pasta dishes and dessert, not to mention grappa and chocolate on the house. My ravioli was not the most exciting dish I ate in Rome, but the rest was all so good and space felt so intimate that it didn't really matter. read more

Visiting Rome with my family and are staying right down the street. Saw the reviews online and decided to check it. We speak a VERY limited amount of Italian. Stopped by here for solo dinner on a Saturday night. During the day, Masto sells gourmet meats, cheeses, wines, and other delicacies, but also serves lunch and dinner. I had the asparagus lasagna and broccoletti; the lasagna was incredible, and the broccoletti - while more like a spinach than a broccoli (if you're from the U.S.) - was seasoned perfectly and added the bit of green I've been missing on my trip to Rome :) There aren't too many tables here, so I would recommend making a reservation, if you're a group of 3 or greater. We walked and walked trying to find that great Roman food experience and then we stumbled into the best. Emiliano, our waiter was simply amazing and made our visit stellar. He gave us a true Italian lesson and was so patient as we all stumbled through butchering his beautiful native language. My two girl friends and I had dinner at this place after our morning food walk tour in the area. We had a cheese plate that the owner selected, a bottle of red wine and prosecco. We enjoyed our wine and talked enjoying the ambiance of this cute little place. We decided to get dinner there as this was not part of the initial plan but we were having such a great time we didn't want to leave. So we ordered the regular lasagna, cabbage and blue cheese lasagna (which was really good and intense), ravioli with cheese and basil and meatballs. All of it was amazing!
