La Scalinata did a great job of accommodating our group of 9 people. This is an authentic Roman tavern - casual and home style food. The staff was warm, fun, and welcoming. We ordered several appetizers- prosciutto with mozzarella, mussels, and calamari. All were great. For entrees, we had pasta with truffles, fettuccine Gricia, grilled chicken and vegetables, Greek salad, oxtail stew, pasta bolognese, and spicy sausage pizza. Note that the pizza is very thin and crispy- Roman style. We enjoyed all the dishes-everything was delicious. Standout dishes were oxtail stew and pastas. The house wine was very good- a little sweet and a little dry. Prices are reasonable and portions are hearty. OK. I've been wandering around Rome for awhile and now I'm getting a little hungry. Stopped into this rustic cafe for eggplant parmesan and it was delicious. After walking quite for a while trough Rome and checking out the numerous sights we felt a bit hungry. Not far away from the Spanish Steps in a smaller street we walked by this place. It looked very charming and the menu had some good items on it. So we walked in. It was pretty busy all night, but always some tables available, so we got seated right away. A really comfy, charming and cosy restaurant. Typical Italian style, felt at home right away. Service was great, very helpful, very friendly....very entertaining. Took care of us very well all night. We ordered the Frittura di Mare (fried seafood) and the veal Saltimbocca (veal with ham and sage) in wine sauce. A half-litre of white house wine with the meal (just for 6 Euros). The fried calamaris could have been a wee bit crispier, but besides that a very enjoyable meal with nice and fresh seafood. The Saltimbocca was fantastic. I've had this dish several times before, but never on a wine sauce. And the sauce is what made it special, really really tasty. Definitely will serve in wine sauce as well from now on when cooking it at home. A really nice, enjoyable dinner in a family-friendly, casual atmosphere. Good times. And keep in mind, we're in the middle of Rome: and we just paid right under 50 Euros for the dinner. Talk about value! read more

We ordered grilled vegetables, fettuccini funghi, fettuccini bolognese, and chicken with peppers. ALL just delicious. Stopped by here randomly because it's near the shopping area. Upon entering, the owner was very friendly and treated us very warmly throughout the entire meal. For food, we got the pizza with spicy salami and pasta bolognese. Both were good, but a little too salty. Just be aware - when you pay, the owner will pressure you for a tip and keep asking until you give it. Tips are typically discretionary, especially in Italy, but to have the owner pressure us so hard for tips ruined the experience for us. Which is why I gave this a 3 star rather than 4. read more

Very conveniently located, just minutes from Spanish steps and Trevi Fountain, Hostaria la Scalinata is a true hidden gem! Don't waste your time trying to find anything else, the place offers the most amazing, authentic Italian food you can only dream of! We ended up coming back almost every night we spent in Rome. Our server, Ameteo, was absolutely incredible, he made us feel so welcome every time, it truly felt like we were are visiting our family. The food is incredible, every bite is like a symphony in your mouth. Everything in their menu is fantastic, but their burrata appetizer, carbonara, lasagna, pizza, meatballs, and grilled meats are simply magnificent! The desserts are amazing too! I read all the reviews for all the restaurants around and we concentrate on gluten free because of my wife's food allergies. This restaurant was full and the neighbors were empty. Typical of Yelp research. The staff were SO POLITE and helpful. We ordered a side salad, vegetable soup (absolutely amazing broth) and a gluten free pasta dish to share between us and it was the perfect amount. From the beginning it was a red flag. When we arrived it took a long time to take our order and there were only 3 tables around. We ordered the lasgna and vegetable soup. The lasgna was average and the soup was tasteless and bland. Campbell vegetable soup had more flavor. When we asked for the check the waiter didn't want us to leave which is weird. I'm not sure what his problem was but he gave everyone around us a sample of the lemonchello except us. When we finally have the check he asked for a tip but charged us for the service fee and bread which we didn't order any bread. Overall I don't recommend coming here with the creepy owner. read more

I love love love this place! The service was the best I had in all of Spain, Italy, and Paris. This was one of my favorite places. The food is outstanding. We had some spicy salami pizza, pasta, wine, and dessert. We had the best cannoli here--seriously the best. And I have eaten my fair share of cannolis across Europe. Our waiter was amazing. He was so sweet. I would have taken him home with me if he'd fit in my luggage. He made me feel like we were friends. The location is right in the heart of things near Trevi and Spanish Steps. We just stumbled on this place as we were walking from the Trevi fountain to the Spanish Steps. Great wait staff, would definitely return for more. There are roman specialties on the menu that we didn't see anywhere else, specifically the fried artichokes. We didn't have a lot to eat, but what we had was delicious. I had fettuccine al pesto and my friend had a spinach salad. I am a home baker and I have to say the bread was excellent. The tiramisu was top drawer. We stumbled upon this adorable little restaurant and absolutely lucked out. It happened to be near out hotel, which is in the Trevi Fountain neighborhood. We are only in Rome for four nights, and have already eaten here twice!! It feels local and not touristy at all. We have had some of everything; braseola with rocket, bruschetta, veal saltimbucca, bacala (cod), pork chop, chicken and grilled veggies, vegetable soup, and the side of sauteed chicory. Can't imagine a place with worse service. After being sat 15 minutes we weren't given a menu or approached by anyone. I had to get up and ask the manager for menus. Then again to place an order.
