We ordered crispy Roman artichoke appetizer, good flavor but it was cold. We shared 2 pastas - carbonara and amatriciana.... The carbonara is definitely pecorino dominate as it was gamey/barnyardy with the sheep-y taste than then 50/50 pecorino/parmesan I'm used to... understanding that pecorino is the most traditional choice, it was too gamey for me. The amatriciana was tasty but nothing to call home for. Just as I thought this was a complete flop we decided to order a couple tiramisus to finish the meal. They really redeemed themselves, the tiramisu was divine and oh so delicious. I still think about those tiramisus. Without the dessert this would have been a 2-3 stars place but I'd come back to give them another try with different dishes next time I'm in town. Seriously would just come back for the tiramisus.... On another visit in Rome, line was very long for dinner. So we decided to skip it. But last December 2025, me and my friend got lucky to get seated right away at 2pm. They have a lot of seats downstairs and upstairs but they still get packed. True enough in one of the reviews, their bathroom has limited stalls so line gets long. On our visit last December, it took our server a bit to approach us and instead she went to another table that was seated after us. But hey, I am having a great time with my friend so I was distracted. Food was not served quickly as well. Really loved the pasta here! It's really popular so wait can be a bit long. We came on a Tuesday at 9pm and it wasn't bad (waited around 20 minutes). You put your name down then wait around the area for them to call your name. Ordered the tonnarello Ametriciana which was so good! Loved the tomato flavor as well as how al dente and thick the noodles were - pasta texture felt very high quality. My husband ordered the Cacio e Pepe which he thought was good but wished there was a bit more of the black pepper taste. Food came out very fast! There's both indoor and outdoor seating. There are better places! Overhyped and lacking flavour. None of the dishes we ordered were good, sauce either lacked flavour or the dish was overly salty. I was rather disappointed since it was such a hyped restaurant! Service was decent but the whole restaurant was cramped and everyone always rushing you to finish. It was not the typical Italian 4 course dinner I was use to. It felt more American and our bill was given to us without asking for it. We felt like we were being kicked out and we hadn't finish our dessert yet. My group and I wanted to check out another place for aperitivo and since we walked a lot today, we wanted somewhere close by. We walked by this restaurant with a board stating €10 for 2 Aperol Spritz and some light bites - sounds fun! That was exactly what we got + a wine for my boyfriend. The drinks were much smaller than the other places we've been to which makes sense as it was only €5. But it was strong! My mom and I were immediately flushed, and she felt kind of tipsy. Maybe it was the lack of carbs we got but it was definitely much stronger than the previous restaurants we've been to. I also made a joke to our waitress that it was strong, and she definitely judged me quite hard for it LOL. We received a small board of the light bites that included French fries, flatbreads, and bruschetta. Everything was ok except the bruschetta, omg. That was AMAZING. The flavors of the bruschetta were probably one of the best I've ever had. It was a bummer that we only had two to share amongst the three of us but so so so good. I was thinking of ordering another drink but both me and my mom could barely finish one (lol, we're lightweights). We also ordered their Meatballs in Oxtail Sauce and Focaccia as our waitress recommended it with the sauce. The meatballs were delicious! It fell apart easily and wasn't gummy like some of the ones in America. There was some oxtail meat inside the meatball as well. The focaccia with the sauce was sooo good. It was a great recommendation even though there wasn't much sauce from the meatballs. We also really liked the chicory greens. Overall, an okay restaurant in my opinion. It is a little on the pricier side since I feel like it's more catered to tourists after a day at the Vatican City. Tonnarello has an insane social media presence - it's apparently commonly recommended all over tiktok and its popularity is also reflected in just how many locations there are around in Trastevere. I decided to stop in to see if it was worth the hype - and ultimately wasn't wowed. I think the food itself is solid, but I had a lot of better, more memorable dishes elsewhere around Trastevere in my two weeks staying in the area. The pros: service was very attentive, fast and nice. My waiter was excellent: he took my order quickly and cleared my plates quickly as well, despite how busy the restaurant was. I was very impressed by the speed. He also did an excellent job creating a welcoming environment and was fun to speak with. The vibe is also excellent - you have the option between indoors and outdoors and both atmospheres are warm and welcoming. The food itself was "meh". I ordered the tonnarelli carbonara and found the noodles a bit overcooked. I have no problem with pastas that are cooked a bit beyond al dente, but even I found this pasta way too mushy. The sauce itself was good, but the noodles really did detract from the food. Whenever family and friends ask for restaurant recommendations in Rome, Tonnarello is on the list. Been eating here for many years when in Rome and it never disapoints. In the last few years TikTok and Insta have helped drive attention and well the lines are longer and in the summer waiting for over an hour in the heat is not pleasant but the kitchen still delivers pans full of yummy pasta. In the busy months they set up outdoor dinning areas and would love to know how many dishes the kitchen produces. The Roman pastas here are all excellent, I tend to like the Cacio e Pepe is best and the pizza and appetizers are all great. Found this place on Google Maps as I was trying to decide what I wanted to eat for my last day in Rome. With more than 100k listed reviews on Google, I felt FOMO and felt the need to come here to really see what it's all about. My friend and I came here for a late-ish lunch, maybe a bit past 3pm, and there was still a good line around the corner. It moves fast though. They have two lines - I think one for larger group and one for groups of 1-2. They have indoor and outdoor seating and we waited a bit longer because we really wanted to sit indoors to be away from the smoking outside. The food was delicious and came out quickly. Friendly servers when they first seat us and take our orders, and that was about all the service you'll get. We got the peppers and zucchini pizza was some of the best I've ever had. We also got carbonara pasta and a salad to cleanse our palates and feel healthy about eating so many carbs. The only complaints are: 1. Bathroom lines. There's only maybe 2-3 stalls serving the entire restaurant. Not enough. Because of the way it's laid out and the small space, even though the sinks and toilets are separated and technically people can be going to the bathroom as soon as you come out and are washing your hands, it's not immediately obvious with the the multiple divider doors and the small space of trying to shimmy past people so you're essentially drawing out the wait time as you wait for people to use the bathroom and wash their hands before you can even enter to do your business. Coupled with the fact that the bathroom is upstairs, it's not the most accessible. The line also extends down the stairs and there are waiters going up and down the same narrow staircase, causing many close calls of spilling food. 2. Our server had to be reminded of our drink orders multiple times - it was a simple orange soda that we ordered (3) of at different times. It also felt like a struggling trying to get the waiter's attention to finally settle the check at the end. read more

I am only giving this place 3 stars because if you are really hungry, and just want plain food, but it's 4 P.M. and the real Italian restaurants are all closed, then this may be your option if you are an American tourist. Italy Trip March 2025 This place is popular with good reason. The food is good, the service is good, and it's located in the popular charming Trastevere neighborhood. I can't figure out how they keep track of the que but it seemed they had three different lines depending on your party size. I did hear a lot of Italian being spoke amongst the customers so I felt comforted that I wasn't getting sucked into a tourist trap. Locals are always a good sign. Calamari to start off with was perfect. Crisp coating and not greasy. Straccetti was recommended as a hearty dish (I was hungry). Sliced beef with roasted potatos. I felt okay on this one. I'm not a wolf or something but the beef was so thinly sliced that I just felt I wasn't getting a good chew. Flavor profile, beef in a wine sauce, could have packed more punch. Great presentation. The stand-out here is definitely the FRIED ARTICHOKE. You must try this. It's reminiscent of a bloomin' onion, but way better. Apparently there are four traditional Roman pastas. At this point in time, I was just missing one to try, so I ordered it here -- AMATRICIANA. Check mark! It's a tomato-based pasta with pecorino cheese and guanciale, which is cured pork. It was good, but not my favorite. I also got an APEROL SPRITZ, which I decided was my accessory for this trip. Completely confused about the hype around this restaurant (and the 4 other locations). We decided to eat at 5p.m. in order to avoid any lines. If we had to wait in line and experience the food we ended up with, we would have been upset. We ordered several pastas to try as well as meatballs. The pastas were either dry, drenched in oil, or the sauce was overall just thick/ not tasty. The meatballs were hefty but lacked flavor or any depth. Nothing on the table was worth finishing. We left a lot of food. The cherry on top was when we went to check out, they had added an order of focaccia bread for 6.5 to the bill. We had initially thought this is part of the "cover charge" and therefore hadn't said anything. However, there was also a cover charge. The employee played it off, shaking his head that the server added it and thanked us for bringing it to his attention.
