I had heard this is a "tourist trap" with long lines and mediocre food. But with 108 thousands reviews on Google, how could I not be intrigued? We arrived around 12:30pm on a Friday in July. We were seated right away! Again my hopes were not too high and again I was pleasantly surprised! There are four pastas that you MUST try when in Rome as they say. Amatriciana, carbonara, cacio e pepe, and grica. I decided to try the amatriciana here and oh my! It's going to be my go to from now on! The sauce mixture of tomatoes and cheese was heaven! The presentation of being served in a pan was a nice touch. I would definitely avoid the pizza though. Not worth the tummy space. But do be sure to save some room for the tiramisu! It had a different flavor from most that was intriguing. Don't listen to the haters saying it's overhyped. If you have the opportunity I would say go for it and judge for yourself!
Found this place off social media as recommended to try their Cacio e Pepe. I'm not a huge fan of Italian food but.. when in Rome...you get the Cacio e Pepe. I got a side of meatballs to add some protein to my meal and focaccia because who can skip bread! Limoncello spritz was delicious. I could have had 10 more. The pasta itself was great, very cheesy and salty. With a hint of pepper. I will say adding the meatballs was a pro move. I wish they had that as a menu option so you don't have to pay an ungodly price at the end! Great experience to dine outdoors, but they also have air conditioned seats indoors. 10/10!
This restaurant was my favorite carbonara dish! Everything was delicious & freshly made & to top it off they had Moscato which I had a hard time finding in Rome. My family took me here for my birthday & I was very pleased with the food & service. The bathroom is located upstairs where they have another area to dine as well as an outdoor area. The bathroom is unisex with 2 stalls for woman & 1 for men. This place was busy but the staff didnt lack in service. We waited about 15mins to be served. The decor is cute. When back in Rome, this will be my #1 stop.
Can't get no more Italiano, then Tonnarello. As you approach the young maître ď he will ask how many in your Party you either line up with the 3 or more group or the party of 2 line. On the 3 or more line it moved quickly then next question do you want to eat outside or inside. Outside your wait will be longer and though there were many tables people tend to want to soak up the energy that comes from eating outside. The food was excellent my coda alla vaccinara was fantastic 3 large oxtails stewed in a tomato sauce served with purée mashed potatoes and salad. My wife and daughter decided to go with the Carbonara and my grandson chose the Tonnarello alľ amatriciana. I also tried the Fanta soda definitely not the Fanta you get in the US. I highly suggest checking this bustling area and restaurant out.
We enjoyed dinner at Tonnarello near the Pantheon. My son Cole order the Cacio de pepe meatballs with focaccia and I ordered the pasta carbonara. My sister Paola ordered the Oxtail and my niece the meatballs in spaghetti sauce. We shared the dishes and had mixed reviews. Cole didn't like the meatball he picked. They came out all white with out any sauce served with spinach and potatoes. The pasta carbonara was too rich a without any sauce. I am probably not the best judge of what makes a good carbonara as I have gotten used to how I make it at home. The Oxtail was excellent. Probably one of the best dishes we had on our vacation. My niece enjoyed the meatballs in red sauce and wouldn't share. ;). Focaccia was very thin. Not what I'm used too. Good flavor though. The service was slow and the server was not attentive. I requested to start with tiramisu and she didnt bring it out until after. At that point we were full and declined. Getting a drink refill was slow and she kept getting it wrong by being us dishes and drinks meant for other tables.
Hubs wanted to try this cuz it was one of the oldest restaurants around and had 100k reviews on Google! Wow! Food good and hubs enjoyed his pizza with egg as a topping. The salad though was excellent! Fried artichoke is a must! Tried an Aperol Spritz cuz everyone was drinking them! Lol. It looks pretty but was just ok for me. Instead of Limoncello to end our meal with they gave us something called Neroni which they said was more herbal based and aided digestion. One of the bigger restaurants we had been too. Arnold our server that took over for our initial one was excellent! So positive, cheerful and on the ball. I've learned that restrooms are a premium lol. We sat inside and it was nice and cool. Loved that they decorated with some vintage pieces.
Best carbonara I had in Italy, 9/10. Granted I didn't have many. Pizza was okay, 6/10. Sauce didn't have any flavor, crust was a bit thicker than I would have liked. Service was quick. It was a bit crampy inside but that's just how most restaurants in Italy are, especially the popular ones
Great service, fast seating. We sat inside but I think there's usually a wait to eat outside. The food was fast and decent I would rate it about a 6, 6.5 it's a little salty for my liking but it's all perspective.
November 10th, 2024, Sunday @ 12:33PM- There was a line to get in but it moved quickly. This is definitely a tourist trap with huge social media presence. Service was okay. We ordered crispy Roman artichoke appetizer, good flavor but it was cold. We shared 2 pastas - carbonara and amatriciana.... The carbonara is definitely pecorino dominate as it was gamey/barnyardy with the sheep-y taste than then 50/50 pecorino/parmesan I'm used to... understanding that pecorino is the most traditional choice, it was too gamey for me. The amatriciana was tasty but nothing to call home for. Just as I thought this was a complete flop we decided to order a couple tiramisus to finish the meal. They really redeemed themselves, the tiramisu was divine and oh so delicious. I still think about those tiramisus. Without the dessert this would have been a 2-3 stars place but I'd come back to give them another try with different dishes next time I'm in town. Seriously would just come back for the tiramisus.... It was that good.
Service was great. My lasagna had 2 bits of foil in it and tasted a little off.Good atmosphere.
Have to agree with the other reviews. It's a Tourist trap. They were flipping tables quicker than the servers they were giving us. They're clearly was catering to us like Americans. The food was OK. It didn't feel like it was made with love. The Caprese salad was extremely disappointing. Overall not bad food but not what I was expecting for authentic Italian
There are better places! Overhyped and lacking flavour. None of the dishes we ordered were good, sauce either lacked flavour or the dish was overly salty. I was rather disappointed since it was such a hyped restaurant! Service was decent but the whole restaurant was cramped and everyone always rushing you to finish. It was not the typical Italian 4 course dinner I was use to. It felt more American and our bill was given to us without asking for it. We felt like we were being kicked out and we hadn't finish our dessert yet. Most restaurants in Italy would also offer a grappa/liemcello or digestive at the end on the house, they just offer us a lollipop.
My group and I wanted to check out another place for aperitivo and since we walked a lot today, we wanted somewhere close by. We walked by this restaurant with a board stating €10 for 2 Aperol Spritz and some light bites - sounds fun! That was exactly what we got + a wine for my boyfriend. The drinks were much smaller than the other places we've been to which makes sense as it was only €5. But it was strong! My mom and I were immediately flushed, and she felt kind of tipsy. Maybe it was the lack of carbs we got but it was definitely much stronger than the previous restaurants we've been to. I also made a joke to our waitress that it was strong, and she definitely judged me quite hard for it LOL. We received a small board of the light bites that included French fries, flatbreads, and bruschetta. Everything was ok except the bruschetta, omg. That was AMAZING. The flavors of the bruschetta were probably one of the best I've ever had. It was a bummer that we only had two to share amongst the three of us but so so so good. I was thinking of ordering another drink but both me and my mom could barely finish one (lol, we're lightweights). We also ordered their Meatballs in Oxtail Sauce and Focaccia as our waitress recommended it with the sauce. The meatballs were delicious! It fell apart easily and wasn't gummy like some of the ones in America. There was some oxtail meat inside the meatball as well. The focaccia with the sauce was sooo good. It was a great recommendation even though there wasn't much sauce from the meatballs. We also really liked the chicory greens. Overall, an okay restaurant in my opinion. It is a little on the pricier side since I feel like it's more catered to tourists after a day at the Vatican City. We didn't get to try anything else besides the two things which probably annoyed our waitress but the pizzas and pastas looked good per Google! P.S. there is a mandatory 5% service charge included in the bill. Not a bad amount considering we did not need to pay for the water.

I had a wonderful dinner experience at Tonnarello in Rome. The restaurant has a lively and welcoming atmosphere that really captures the energy of Trastevere. Even though there was a bit of a wait, it was absolutely worth it once we were seated. The staff was friendly and attentive despite how busy the restaurant was. You could tell they were working hard to make sure everyone had a good experience. read more

Really loved the pasta here! It's really popular so wait can be a bit long. We came on a Tuesday at 9pm and it wasn't bad (waited around 20 minutes). You put your name down then wait around the area for them to call your name. Ordered the tonnarello Ametriciana which was so good! Loved the tomato flavor as well as how al dente and thick the noodles were - pasta texture felt very high quality. My husband ordered the Cacio e Pepe which he thought was good but wished there was a bit more of the black pepper taste. Food came out very fast! There's both indoor and outdoor seating. We opted for first available but if you can get outdoor seating to enjoy the view that seems nicer as indoor felt a bit cramped. read more
Tonnarello ROME since 1876 Over 96K reviews sign me up We got : Hot focaccia Tonnarello CACIO E PEPE: everyone said this was best but I thought this was actually average for Italy standards Rigatoni al PESTO with Pinenuts cherry Tomatoes -Meatballs in OXTAIL SAUCE (BEST OF MY LIFE) -tiramisu (WORTH IT TO FLY TO ITALY) -gingerale -trastevere : tomatoes, zucchini, olives, corn , buffalo milk mozzarella. Salad. Service was great! It was super tight as I sat outdoors with heating, but it gave a cozy vibe. Definitely I recommend looking around what none tourists may be ordering , lol and try some other dishes not just pasta. I still love this place and there is so much on the menu I want to try in future. read more
Tonnarello has an insane social media presence - it's apparently commonly recommended all over tiktok and its popularity is also reflected in just how many locations there are around in Trastevere. I decided to stop in to see if it was worth the hype - and ultimately wasn't wowed. I think the food itself is solid, but I had a lot of better, more memorable dishes elsewhere around Trastevere in my two weeks staying in the area. The pros: service was very attentive, fast and nice. My waiter was excellent: he took my order quickly and cleared my plates quickly as well, despite how busy the restaurant was. I was very impressed by the speed. He also did an excellent job creating a welcoming environment and was fun to speak with. The vibe is also excellent - you have the option between indoors and outdoors and both atmospheres are warm and welcoming. The food itself was "meh". I ordered the tonnarelli carbonara and found the noodles a bit overcooked. I have no problem with pastas that are cooked a bit beyond al dente, but even I found this pasta way too mushy. The sauce itself was good, but the noodles really did detract from the food. It's possible they had an off-day, but overall, I found this more social media, designed to be photographed rather than excellent pasta. read more

Food: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Ambiance: 3/5 outside seating have some sewage smell. I was looking for a good restaurant to eat in this neighborhood and found this one. Reviews looks promising so decided to stop by. I arrived here around 4:30pm on Wednesday and the place look busy. I asked for happy hour and they don't have it. Ordered spritz and it tasted very good. They put good amount of alcohol so it has a good kick. Also ordered lasagna and meatballs pasta. They both acceptable, but a bit pricey for overall experience, they charged for water and service fee. I believe this place considered as tourist trap since they serve dinner early, charge for service fee and menu. read more

We had an amazing time at Tonnarello. The food was amazing. We ate upstairs and the room is air conditioned which was helpful during last week's heat. The service was prompt and the food just kept coming. The ambiance is great. The restaurant was full but it was not too loud. read more

This was such a disappointment. We only took a few bites because the pasta was too hard and too salty. I felt victimized by a tourist trap. I regret not opting for a more local option. The service though was very attentive and fast. I would definitely avoid this next time unless you like hard and salty pasta. read more
This is a very popular restaurant in the Trastevere area in Rome. Established in 1876. 4.2 rating with 600 reviews on Yelp so this must be a good one so count me in. On another visit in Rome, line was very long for dinner. So we decided to skip it. But last December 2025, me and my friend got lucky to get seated right away at 2pm. They have a lot of seats downstairs and upstairs but they still get packed. True enough in one of the reviews, their bathroom has limited stalls so line gets long. On our visit last December, it took our server a bit to approach us and instead she went to another table that was seated after us. But hey, I am having a great time with my friend so I was distracted. Food was not served quickly as well. Our orders were as follow: Tonnarello Carbonara - egg, bacon, cheese and pepper) - too salty for me Tonnarello Nonne Nadia - eggplants, olives, capers and tomatoes Hot Focaccia - was really good Sprite and Coke We're not Italian so we went straight to order main course. Recommendations?! If you want to try it be prepared to line up and wait. Patience is necessary. On the restaurant's end - go easy on the salt as food tends to be too salty. I was determined to find some good Cacio e Pepe while in Italy, and we lucked out with Tonnarello on the first try. There was a bit of a line at lunch time, but it moved pretty quickly. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the portion was huge - 11 Euro for a portion big enough for us to split. Service was prompt! read more
Food was great. Nonna Nadia Pasta was cooked well and soft. Great flavor and ingredients, it was delicious and great portion. The Traversevere salad had tons of ingredients and was a very full salad. The tiramisu was like a soft pudding, and there was no lady finger breads. Just the pudding. Service was good. Brought food out very quickly!! Then they never rush you out. Ambiance was very nice. Outdoors and lively. I enjoyed my dinner and it was great weather. read more

Whenever family and friends ask for restaurant recommendations in Rome, Tonnarello is on the list. Been eating here for many years when in Rome and it never disapoints. In the last few years TikTok and Insta have helped drive attention and well the lines are longer and in the summer waiting for over an hour in the heat is not pleasant but the kitchen still delivers pans full of yummy pasta. In the busy months they set up outdoor dinning areas and would love to know how many dishes the kitchen produces. The Roman pastas here are all excellent, I tend to like the Cacio e Pepe is best and the pizza and appetizers are all great. It's worth the wait (no more than an hour if it's longer I will pass). read more
Found this place on Google Maps as I was trying to decide what I wanted to eat for my last day in Rome. With more than 100k listed reviews on Google, I felt FOMO and felt the need to come here to really see what it's all about. My friend and I came here for a late-ish lunch, maybe a bit past 3pm, and there was still a good line around the corner. It moves fast though. They have two lines - I think one for larger group and one for groups of 1-2. They have indoor and outdoor seating and we waited a bit longer because we really wanted to sit indoors to be away from the smoking outside. The food was delicious and came out quickly. Friendly servers when they first seat us and take our orders, and that was about all the service you'll get. We got the peppers and zucchini pizza was some of the best I've ever had. We also got carbonara pasta and a salad to cleanse our palates and feel healthy about eating so many carbs. The only complaints are: 1. Bathroom lines. There's only maybe 2-3 stalls serving the entire restaurant. Not enough. Because of the way it's laid out and the small space, even though the sinks and toilets are separated and technically people can be going to the bathroom as soon as you come out and are washing your hands, it's not immediately obvious with the the multiple divider doors and the small space of trying to shimmy past people so you're essentially drawing out the wait time as you wait for people to use the bathroom and wash their hands before you can even enter to do your business. Coupled with the fact that the bathroom is upstairs, it's not the most accessible. The line also extends down the stairs and there are waiters going up and down the same narrow staircase, causing many close calls of spilling food. 2. Our server had to be reminded of our drink orders multiple times - it was a simple orange soda that we ordered (3) of at different times. It also felt like a struggling trying to get the waiter's attention to finally settle the check at the end. read more
Delicious handmade pasta Get the pasta you won't regret it it super delicious Service is fast and attentive Ambiance is great you get to pick indoor or out door We pick outdoor to get in all the Italy feel Weather was nice and the space was packed with people. The line is alway long cause this place is that good. But don't worry the line move fast so don't be scared off. The restaurant is huge so the line move fast and even faster if you sit inside. Pasta is handmade super worth getting Beef is alright but once add the olive oil and balsamic it bring up the notch of flavor Must get there tiramisu it's delicious And there prosciutto board was delicious as well also portion is generous Oh there wine selection is great as well We got the moscato bottle super worth it Can't go wrong with there selection. Also you can ask for a taste first before ordering the glass or bottle. After the taste we went for the bottle cause it was that good. read more

Italy Trip March 2025 This place is popular with good reason. The food is good, the service is good, and it's located in the popular charming Trastevere neighborhood. I can't figure out how they keep track of the que but it seemed they had three different lines depending on your party size. I did hear a lot of Italian being spoke amongst the customers so I felt comforted that I wasn't getting sucked into a tourist trap. Locals are always a good sign. Calamari to start off with was perfect. Crisp coating and not greasy. Straccetti was recommended as a hearty dish (I was hungry). Sliced beef with roasted potatos. I felt okay on this one. I'm not a wolf or something but the beef was so thinly sliced that I just felt I wasn't getting a good chew. Flavor profile, beef in a wine sauce, could have packed more punch. Pasta dishes-Nonna Nadia also recommended was spaghetti with eggplant, tomato, capers, and olives. Good though my daughter asked for no capers which I actually like. Also ordered the cacio e pepe. We ordered Lasagna Bolognese with provola cheese and mozzarella cheese and another dish with meatballs in tomato sauce with pasta. I did not taste anything special at this restaurant. Both dishes tasted like the ones from LA. Nothing stood out and nothing was special. I guess I wanted to taste them differently since Italy is known for those particular dishes. Service was kind of okay. Waiters were speaking English very well. We saw the rating on Yelp and we thought this place was as good as the rating. But for me, this restaurant was a tourist trap. Delicious food, lively atmosphere, and great service! The only part I didn't like was the wait to actually get a seat. But that's because we didn't have a reservation. However, the wait was absolutely worth it. Best meal we had in Rome! read more
