I don't recall the name of that little restaurant when I first travelled to Europe, but I do remember how it made me feel. I was naïve. I was easily impressed by the charming waiters who patiently suggested dishes in English when I flubbed trying order in a foreign language I did not speak. The crisp white table cloths, the flickering candles, the fresh flowers, and the low pleasant music were exotic and intoxicating to my freshly minted graduate eyes. And the food... the food bewitched my nearly virginal tastebuds. That feeling is a lot like falling in love. In retrospect, that place was probably pretty average, but I didn't know any better. Fast forward X-number of decades. I have experience and am crusted with cynicism. You're going to have to do a bit more than blow in my ear or serve me cheese I can't pronounce to raise my heartbeat these days. I came here, this time with my family to this tiny trattoria - which only has five small tables and one large table indoors, plus a few two tops on the sidewalk. Make sure you book reservations, especially if you have more than four people for that one big table. And I'll be damned if I didn't get completely romanced by this little place. The people, the sounds, the sights, the food, the coziness, the... everything was perfect. It made me feel like that first time. Every other restaurant was pretty mediocre in terms of Italian food, but Sofia's was AMAZING, starting from their bread (which is to die for), appetizer, and main course and dessert! My husband & were the 1st to be served last evening. We were there at 6:33pm. (The restaurant opens at 6:30pm) Our server & hostess Lauren was pleasant, courteous & very friendly. We decided to get the valeriana salad & vegetable flan with pecorino sauce as starters. She chose an excellent wine for us too. Main course included risotto with prawn carpaccio & rabbit leg confit. The chef was kind enough to switch the mashed potatoes for escarole in the rabbit dish. The risotto was cooked to perfection & the rabbit dish was "melt in your mouth" delicious! Even though we were full by then, I couldn't stop myself from ordering the tiramisu which was absolutely delicious! I would love to go again if time permits. Great restaurant! We found this place on our last night in Rome. We wish we had found it on our first day there! Previous restaurant recommendations from our hotel were very touristy. We discovered Sofia just by walking around the neighborhood and it did not disappoint. It's a small place, owned by a young couple. I think the husband may be the chef and the wife ran front of house. She made us feel very welcomed and her suggestions were spot on. Fantastic food and wine. This place is a win! We made very late reservations and they were kind enough to squeeze us in. I'm so glad they did. This was the best meal I've had since I left Texas. It definitely does NOT have a placard outside or a caller trying to pull us in. No need. Sofia stands on its quality food and well-deserved reputation. I had the Danish filet with spinach. My dining partner had the spaghetti on the menu minus the bacon to make it vegetarian. She said it was fantastic. The bill with was $74EUR for those dishes, a glass of prosecco and two beers. The strozzapreti all'matriciana di pomodoro datterino dish is one of the best pastas I have ever had in my life and that is not an overstatement. This cozy and beautifully decorated restaurant is just steps away from the Piazza di Spagna - where the Spanish steps are located. The staff was very friendly and I felt very welcomed when I ate there. The prices are very reasonable considering that there are numerous designers shops and a very popular tourist attraction nearby. A great finish to a week in Rome. Came in early at 7 so I could get a seat. Good restaurants are filled up by 8 and cheaper ones taste like frozen dinners. One word - GREAT. We went there following a reccommendation we found on the Internet. We were there on Sunday for lunch, so it was pretty empty, but I am sure it is not on other days. We went because of the reviews on yelp. The food was good and the restaurant was quaint. The staff was nice. However my wife ordered soup and a side of green beans. Always the one to watch her weight. The soup was good. The Green Beans came 20 minutes after we had finished our meal. My wife said she did not want them since we had finished the meal a while ago and thought they had forgotten the order. She was told they made them and she had to pay for them regardless. Well I was looking into desert and coffee which I cancels because they were rude about the kitchen screwing up our order. I would not go back. As much as I would like to rate this higher than 3, sadly I can't. First, and I hope this was an isolated incident, there was only 1 waiter for the entire restaurant. While this is a small place, it was to capacity inside and out. That being said, you can imagine what that did to service. Oh, and our reservation for 4 was at 7:30. The food was very delicious, and the portions were small, which was fine in that it allowed for multiple courses. They may want to include a couple of somewhat generic items for picky eaters, because let's face it, every group has one. It took over 2 hours to eat dinner, with LONG gaps in between courses. We really enjoyed dinner at this restaurant on a cute street right near the Spanish steps. The food is kind of modern Italian - it definitely has local influences but the menu goes beyond the traditional pasta and meat dishes that are very recognizable to foreigners as Italian. I really enjoyed my swordfish risotto and my husband liked his pasta. The bread basket was probably the best we had in Italy - a very generous helping of buttery focaccia squares. So we had been TA-ing all over Rome. The night we ended up at Sofia we actually had reservations at another place (which bad me cancelled at 3pm that day). Its just that after 4 nights of eating very rich food and eating well - something about this places decor made me think it would be slightly less indulgent. Went as a result of Yelp reviews. GPS had a little trouble finding it. As I was a single and heard they're busy early, I showed up around 10:40PM. A few people sitting outside and maybe 6-8 inside, most of them finishing up. Was probably the only tourist---a good sign. Restaurant is small, but intimate and charming. At first, was a little disappointed in the menu---only a single page. Then, I remembered Gordon Ramsay's dictate---Use the best ingredients in a few dishes you do well. Well, they do their dishes well. This is a modern take on Italian. No meatballs, carbonara, pizza, etc. I started with the souffle of carrot with cream of zucchini. Not bad, but would have preferred the scallops which they were sold out of. For my main, I ordered Strozapretti ali Amatriciana di Pachino. Ever had it? Me, neither. Wow, what a perfect dish. Sauce was complex, flavorful and had me wanting more. Spaghetti was perfectly cooked; made me realize I've never truly had al dente pasta. (By the way, had three glasses of a dry house red that was perfect with my meal.) Dessert was a Valrhona Chocolate cake similar to what you see in a lot of American restaurants, but few as good. My wife and I went here for our last meal in Rome and we didn't regret it at all. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful even though we don't speak any Italian. They let us know what was grown and produced locally and recommended a delicious wine to go with our meal. The meat entrees are slightly more expensive (in the 20-40 euro range) but the pasta and seafood was incredible affordable for the quality of the meal. Sofia was easily the best dining experience we had in Rome. The ambiance was quaint, romantic, and perfect for a couple looking for a great place to have a very nice dinner and a relaxing conversation. The service exceeded our expectations with staff that went above and beyond to be pleasant, welcoming, and helpful. We ordered an appetizer (crispy fried cheese with a honey glaze), split a pasta dish (cheesy spaghetti with crispy bacon), shared the Eggplant Parmesean/Beef Filet, and got desert (tiramisu/chocolate fudge cake). All in all a very good place...owner attentive and convivial...talked into trying "his" brand of coffee but was charged...I was so low key, should have clarified beforehand... Found this place on Yelp and after reading good reviews decided to check it out... I wasn't disappointed, it wasn't your typical tourist food but more towards the fine dining end of the market. The service was great with a lovely waitress and maître dee and the food was wonderful. Definitely the best pasta I've had in 3 weeks whilst in Italy and a lovely sword fish dish for mains. My husband had the risotto with cod and that was beautiful as was his beef fillet cooked to his liking. I finished with the famed tiramisu which didn't disappoint. After going to three other places recommended by yelpers tonight - one was closed, two were full - I decided to give Sophia a try. My meal came out to be 40 Euro, and frankly, I enjoyed the 3.50 sandwich I had at lunch more. I had the cabbage roll appetizer, the first one of which was tasty, but it wasn't a dish I wanted to eat all of. I felt tired of the flavours by the time I was finished the first one. Next came the gnocchi, and someone said below that the food at this restaurant is way too salty. I'd concur with them. Also, I did not enjoy my wine. The first one I tasted was way too sour and the second one was sour, too, but I didn't want to send the wine back again, for fear of seeming impolite. Service was what added the star for me. It was good. Otherwise, I would have given this restaurant would two stars. We went here after reading the good reviews here on Yelp. My mom got the fried octopus and I got the tomato pasta with bacon (I can't remember the name) along with a basket of bread. The bread tasted exactly like Stacy's Pita Chips and was berry salty. Then the octopus was okay, but EXTREMELY salty. This is coming from someone who LOVES sat and always adds more to everything. The pasta dish was okay, but not super flavorful. The bacon on it tasted like pure salt with the pasta being very bland. Overall we were pretty disappointed and it did not live up to the reviews we read. One star for the nice atmosphere/location, one star for the service/nice owner, and one because while the food was salty, it wasn't terrible. read more

This was our first meal in Italy that let us down. The strozapretti with cherry tomatoes was simply too sweet and the bacon was unable to balance out the flavor. My sforno di anellini was first delivered cold in the center (proof that it was pre-made and chilled) and then, after they tried a second time, was just dry and inedible.
