I went on a walk up the coast with my girlfriend from South Carlsbad to the LTH in Oceanside. It is a 6.9 mile walk. The SleepingTiger is 4 miles from the house. The first stop on the walk is for Coffee. I love the fact that this scrumptious coffees is next to Starbucks. I have to say we will get the sandwich from Starbucks and Coffee from the Tiger. I had been looking forward to returning to this place ever since we planned our vacation to Carlsbad. The female barista with brown hair was so rude I almost canceled my order and left. Rather than try to understand what I wanted, she gave me so much lip about how I didn't know what I was ordering when I actually used to work at a coffee shop (and no, it wasn't a Starbucks). I have ordered plenty of drinks from hipster coffee shops and never have I had such gross attitude thrown at me when all I was trying to do was order the drink I had been dreaming of for 4 days. Luckily, there was another barista working (note there was NO LINE and there were two baristas working on a Tuesday morning). I came here for a mid-afternoon pick me up with a coworker. It was not too difficult to find parking as there was parking through the plaza behind. The decor was adorable, and I love that they share the space with a wine place. My friend and I ordered the coffees that they had on deck, but they said unfortunately they take those down after 2 pm. We were disappointed but The barista recommended we try the pour-overs so we went for that. He failed to let us know that the pour-overs are double the price of the coffees on deck, so the bill was a surprise. We sat down waiting for our coffees, and 5 minutes turned into 10 which turned into 20. When we finally got our coffees, it was lukewarm. My friend and I were disappointed, but we felt even worse for the guys sitting next to us. They ordered after us and waited even longer to receive their coffees. One of the guys was still waiting for his, even after we left. The barista addressed them letting them know it might take some time, but they still hadn't received it 20+ minutes later. I find this unacceptable for a coffee joint, especially when it and wasn't busy. The flavor of the coffee was delicious, but it was a shame we couldn't appreciate it fully since it was lukewarm and we waited at least 15 mins for it, and we were also not notified in the price doublage of moving to a pour-over. Today, we got 2 soy cappuccinos one with a splash of their own crafted almond syrup and the other with a splash of caramel. Came here for some coffee and to collaborate with my boyfriend on some projects. The vibe is relaxing and easy going. It totals as a wine bar and coffee hut which is super cool. They have live music there although there was none playing at the time. The server was extremely nice to us. I got myself a chai latte which was very good. Smooth, hot, and hit the spot! We brought in our donuts that we got down the street from The Goods! We enjoyed sitting there and chatting however, it started to get really crowded and overwhelming. There was a big birthday celebration and they took up half the room. That kinda ruined our vibe a little. Other than that, it is a great place to cozy up and enjoy some wine or in our case...coffee! Sleeping tiger does a phenomenal job with coffee. They take pride in the fact that they roast and prepare your coffee right there on site. They do a great job roasting and they do a great job preparing your coffee you can have it several different ways slowly brewed slowly infused or French infusion all are very very delicious. By the way this is not instant coffee it does take a couple minutes for the infusion to take place but while waiting for the infusion you can browse the wonderful display of c'est la vie croissants and breakfast muffins. When you do receive your coffee it's going to be delicious it's going to be full-bodied it's going to be full of caffeine and give you a jolt that will make you want to give them a wonderful wonderful review don't get too buzzed out on sleeping tigers coffee it does pack a wallop. You walk in and the interior instantly elevates not only your expectations, but your over all sense of being. Dark, rustic wood paneling, high ceilings, ample space-- at least on a quiet Wednesday morning. At first one could easily get the impression that they are out of place- that they somehow managed to sneak past the velvet rope into the upper echelon of coffee houses-- that they should have stayed in their lane and gone to the safe, familiar Starbucks right next door instead. What a travesty that would have been. Just I was about turn away sheepishly, I was greeted by a very sweet barista who complimented my hair. She made some great recommendations. I ordered a Cortado - espresso with warm, unfrothed milk. Turns out their menu is actually incredibly simple. A short selection of cold and warm drinks, a wide selection of single origin coffee roasts as well as a great tea selection. For those who love a simple, classic espresso, pour over or French press-- this place is a dream. For those who rather enjoy their syrup with a little coffee in it-- you may need to shift your expectations just a hair but not too much as they do offer a selection of drinks on the sweeter side and even include a wide variety of naturally infused syrups. I've become quite partial to an iced mocha with a hint of lavender syrup-- you know-- before I go chop down trees and wrestle bears with no shirt on. Suffice it to say-- I now happily go out of my way to make this my regular stop! read more

The milk they use is very good but their espresso tastes a bit sour. I believe everything would be perfect if their espresso beans were different. I don't know what I love more - the awesome tiger mural, or that they're next door to a starbucks what I like about their nitro cold brew is that its different everytime. the blend of beans they use changes depending on what roasts they have available, so that they always are serving the freshest coffee. this particular batch had a lovely blueberry flavor that I've never tasted before in cold brew. while I do love my brew bold and chocolatey, I really enjoyed this brew, and I think other people will too. glad to see a solid cold brew spot in carlsbad - 3.75/5 read more

Finally a real coffee roaster in Carlsbad Village!!! So thankful! I am a huge fan of Lofty and Ironsmith in Encinitas, Revolution Roasters, and Cafe Zumbar,...but as a 15year resident of the village I am so glad that I don't have to hop in my car to get a proper cappuccino anymore. Amazing spot-on cappuccinos, chemex, and pour-overs, drip, and great pastries and quiche. Plus there is plenty of outdoor space with a cozy covered patio to hang out & enjoy your coffee in a mug (like you Always should!) There's also a wine tasting bar in the same building so if some people in your party drink wine but some don't.. this is the place for you! We sure picked a great time to move back up to the Carlsbad area! After living downtown I got pretty spoiled having such amazing rosters to choose from on nearly every corner-- Calabria, dark horse, moto, etc. For me, Sleeping Tiger is the Dark Horse of north county. I thought no one could ever match the DK cold brew on nitro but Tiger has. It is so creamy and smooth and almost buttery, without losing any of the complexity of the coffee. I can't recommend this place enough, especially since North County really needs to up its specialty coffee game. The place itself is on a lovely corner in Carlsbad village, right by the tiger mural (hence the name!) and situated inside Witch Creek Winery which gives it a cool, unique vibe for a coffee place. The prices are great especially for the area, but I guess that's the advantage of roasting your own in house! They do a great Chemex pour over and have some unique bean offerings like Papa New Guinea. And for coffee drinks with milk they offer non-dairy options which I always appreciate. The staff is super friendly and even though we've only been a handful of times we already feel like regulars with them. This is a great place to sit and talk for a while which is my number one criteria for a coffee house. Come check it out for yourself! read more
