Came to this place because it was highly reviewed on here and many other online sources. Huge disappointment. Very limited menu during my visit. Me and my wife each got the biscuits and gravy and a fauxmosa (their version of a mimosa). Nothing special about any of it and flavor was bland. I make better myself and I am no expert cook. To top it off the bill was $83. It seemed like other reviews mentioned menu items that were not available when I was visiting - maybe me getting here 30 minutes before close was a factor. We saw the great reviews and popped in here on the weekend. It was a nice 78° day outside but inside was hot and musty with little to no air ventilation. The strong thick smell of oven fumes filled the restaurant. I knew all of our clothes would smell like brunch the rest of the day. The restaurant was busy so we stayed. The menu had $21 avocado toast, $30 steak and eggs.. pricey even compared to nice brunch spots we have dined in Beverly hills. My Bologna egg sandwich had the meat burned completely black on one side. Odd sour flavoring soaked into the bun. The background music was some sort of repetitive depressing funeral beat. After hearing about Skillet the last couple of years I had high expectations walking in the door for the first time. While we were expecting a wait based on bunches of reviews, we were surprisingly able to get seated right away. Perhaps it was because we came in between their breakfast and the lunch/brunch rushes. The physical structure of the restraunt was amazing, warm and inviting. I love the brick, stone, and wood. The decor fit and made everything right. I got the brisket hash and a cup of coffee. In all honesty I was a little underwhelmed. I thought it was average both heat-wise and flavor-wise. I felt the portions didn't meet the cost and unfortunately the egg was the best part of the meal. The coffee was just OK and when you see what they charge it needs to be better than OK. Our server was awesome; pleasant, friendly, and attentive. I knew eating at Skillet wasn't like driving through White Castle for breakfast wallet-wise, but I did not find any value in what I ate and drank. I understand the quality ingrediant concept so I guess that is what I am paying for. I am giving a four for the restraunt itself and the service and a two for the food and the prices so it averages out at a three. Based on their reviews there are a lot of people that love Skillet so when I make another trip I am going to try something different and hope that it wows me. read more

I am local to the area and German Village is not far from me. I felt obligated to finally try Skillet. Yes, I was aware of the hype. Yelp reviews are somewhat interesting. It's either an abysmal 1 star or a stellar 5 stars.... How about somewhere in between?. That's where my experience fell and how I felt at least. I picked a middle of the week day around noon for brunch. By the time I figured out a parking spot it was close to 1. I think they close at 2 or 2:30. Anyhow, they literally had nothing on the menu to order except about 3 items, out of which I only liked one. I went with their signature omelet. The Omelet was very good and tasty. I can tell they use high grade local free range eggs. You know, the good stuff. However, I could not come to terms with the price point value given what I had. I literally had a plain omelet topped with a fresh piece of parsley. No toast. No sides. No additional toppings. No coffee even. The bill was $16. Somewhat steep but it was still a very good tasty omelet. So maybe in some alternate universe justice code it was worth it. I could live with that. I could not get myself to pay almost $4 for a cup of coffee (based on principle really). Ahh... I make my own coffee at home using fresh Colombian and Arabica beans. The struggle was real. The service was a bit awkward. Not overly friendly but it did not bother me. Just don't come here expecting hugs and smiles. I might give it another shot, if I'm encouraged by a curious friend. However, I would come in much earlier since they either seem to run out of menu items pretty fast, or offer limited menus on weekdays. Seated at 12:20 PM Sunday after 45 minute wait and already out of one third of menu items crossed out by marker because too many were sold out to verbally mention including basics list gravy and biscuits. Managed to find somethings to order for four of us. I ordered andouille sausage two eggs and toast. First came sausage couple minutes later the eggs and then the toast. I like my food together and hot. Can say potatoes were good but very few pieces for $5! Chicken sausage was good. Absolutely. Delicious. Keep in mind: it has a tiny dining room, and it's popular, so there is usually a wait. However, you can call ahead and get your party put on the list, which is what we did. We still had to wait 10-15 minutes, but I'm so glad we did. The food was incredible. I got the pork belly hash - there were apples included in the hash, the sweetness was perfect with the saltiness of the pork belly. Three of our party got the quiche (they are so boring, I know) - quiche with butternut squash and goat cheese. I haven't been crazy about goat cheese recently, but it was amazing in a quiche! One of us got the fish breakfast - fish with cheesy grits - not my thing but a great dish. Skillet is truly worth the hype and the long wait to be seated. It's a rather small place so they only have about 4-5 tables inside. We waited for about an hour or so until we got called. The service is spectacular and the precautions they take for Covid is great. Menus on our phones, mask, social distancing and hand sanitizer at the ready. The menu contains lots of heavy comfort food, so come hungry!! They do have a bar, so we ordered bloody Mary's which were perfectly spicy and had a great flavor. For food we ordered 2 dishes to share. The poutine and the blintzes topped with blueberries. Those were quite possibly some of the most amazing things I've ever tasted. The texture and flavor was out of this world. Fully recommend them (and get a full order;) ). And the poutine was delicious as well. So filling and tasty. Had a great experience going here on a Sunday morning. As others have stated the dining area is small so I definitely recommend calling ahead when you are on the way to get on the waiting list. There is a pretty good amount of street parking available around the place. For drinks we had cold brew coffee which was very good and one of the better bloody marys I've had. Note that you can't order liquor until 11 am which we found out but didn't have to wait long. The food was great with the crepes being the highlight of the meal. Wow! Thank you Yelp for another great find. We came on Saturday around 930. They do call ahead so we called about 30 min ahead of time for a party of 4. They were full inside, but we were able to sit outside. The chairs were not comfortable but that is my only complaint. The service was great and the food phenomenal. I had the bangers and mash. I loved this place!! I waited about 30 min for a table and it was well worth it. That's not something you will hear me say often. The decor is cozy. Nothing fancy. This is a farm to table restaurant and you can see the pride they take in their offerings. I of course started with a coffee. I love the container the cream comes in and the coffee was fresh and delicious. Way better then SB. Our waitress was prompt and attentive. For my main dish I went with the goat curry. It was tender and full of flavor and definitely something I would order again. My little man went with a mushroom omelet. I tried it and it was also good. Believe the hype, people. It's totally true. I went to Skillet back in its early days - when there were just a handful of metal tables and chairs, and you placed your order at the little window by the kitchen. And I thought it was five-star worthy back then! Well, fast forward a couple of years later, and the Skillet I remembered was nowhere to be found. Now, the interior has been completely redone, the menu has been upgraded, and there's real table service. We went for Sunday brunch (the same as my original visit), and it was amazing! I think the best way I can describe the food is upscale down-home cooking. Here's what we had: ^Shrimp & grits (in a spicy sauce) ^Hash (with chicken, apples, fingerling potatoes, and two eggs) ^And there was this other dish that I can't remember the name (brioche, a duck egg, hollandaise sauce) ^Brioso coffee (ummm....the best in Columbus!) Everything we ate was unique, special, and delicious. I love going to a restaurant where I can't fathom recreating the meal at home, and yes, Skillet did exactly that. The service was also five star-worthy. Our server was helpful, attentive, and super-friendly. And he made amazing brunch recommendations! Even with the great food and service, what stood out the most to me was how much heart Skillet has. You can practically feel the love and attention they give every detail in the restaurant. Skillet is a Columbus institution, or at least, it used to be. With all of the great brunch places that have sprouted up around town in the past five years, Skillet just doesn't quite seem as special anymore, and maybe that's why it took so long for me see what all the fuss was about. I've heard of lines out the door and hour long waits in order to get in here, so they must be doing something right. We showed up around 9:30 on a Saturday morning and were seated right away! We started off with coffee and the griddle cinnamon roll. I'm not sure where they get their coffee from, but it was really good, and I'm not even a huge coffee fan. The cinnamon roll was huge and delicious as well, but I'm not sure if I liked it as much as ones I've had at The Pearl and Fox in the Snow. For my meal, I went with the lamb chorizo biscuits and gravy with eggs. That chorizo had a really nice kick to it that I enjoyed, and the eggs and biscuit were great too. For anyone saying they leave here still feeling hungry, I'd suggest grabbing this plate and trying again. Of course, it could have also been the huge cinnamon bun I had just eaten. I ordered a side of the thick cut bacon as well, which was tasty, but I wasn't blown away by it, especially for 3 pieces at $7. My girlfriend had the Huevos Rancheros, and it was good, but again, with that price tag I was hoping for more. I almost feel at this point the high price tag for Skillet is based on the name alone, because I really don't need to be paying that much for breakfast/lunch when there's so many other places around town (Guild House, The Pearl, Philco) that all do it great as well for a bit less. By the time we left around 10:30, not only was there no wait, but half the restaurant was empty. I have been dying to try out this place after hearing so many good things about it. I've been hesitant to go to this place though because of everyone's comment about the long wait. We got to the restaurant a little before noon on a Sunday for brunch and was seated within 30 mins. Maybe it's because there is two of us? The indoor seating area is small and relatively loud. Our food was brought out fairly quickly. I got the ham gravy and biscuit. It was heavenly! The hot sauce is a must-try. The potato with kale (?) is incredible. The portions are large. We can only finish about half of the food. I skipped dinner because I was still full from brunch. I will definitely come back again. The wait is really worth it. I really liked how the wait list works here. When you sign in, you put your cellphone number down so they can call you when the table is ready. I gave Skillet three stars the first time around?? I need to be spanked! I have no idea what I was thinking, and you really shouldn't listen to my first review. Boo freakin' hiss. I do remember my first experience here, however, and I want to say that all subsequent experiences have blown that first one out of the water (including visiting their food truck). I took a friend to Skillet today as a reward for saving me from my own near-blackout (okay okay blackout) drunkenness after accidentally consuming too many three dollar long islands (apparently THREE is too many for me) at Hampton's on King last night, and this was definitely the best idea I'd had in the last twenty four hours. Skillet was the perfect hangover food - it's not greasy, gross undergrad-par diner food like you find on campus, and it's not enormous portions that leave you beached for the rest of the day. My Andouille sausage gravy and biscuits + coffee (+ 32oz gatorade) did just right by me to get me in perfect shape to attend tonight's (wonderful!) Yelp Elite Event. So yes, the Andouille sausage gravy and biscuits were recommended to me by the friend who first took me to skillet - and I've had them before, so even though I wanted to try something new, I couldn't stop myself from getting them again. Three buttery-crispy biscuits are covered in light, fluffy eggs and smothered in the sausage gravy, which is just slightly spicy and extremely flavorful without being salty in the way that most sausage gravy is (which makes me cringe). This is possibly one of the world's most perfect foods. My friend ordered the shredded apple pancakes, which also had some kind of cheese mixed in (sadly, i forget which cheese), and they were also excellent - and came with real maple syrup. As someone from a maple producing home-state, this is a big deal to me. I know Ohio also makes maple syrup, but I rarely find it in restaurants here! Cheers, Skillet! The ambiance of this little restaurant is perfect. I revoke my original thought about needing to expand the restaurant. I realise it gets very busy on the weekends, but I enjoy the small space that the Skillet is in now - the last two times I have been here for lunch it hasn't been crowded. I love the wood and dark colors and feelings of comfort I get when I'm here. I even love the simple black coffee cups. I love the servers. I've considered moving to German Village just so I can be closer to Skillet. With it's brick walls, high ceilings and subsequent ceiling fans, large front windows and charmingly small dining room - Skillet feels like a small restaurant in a much larger city than Columbus. I would expect to find Skillet in some hip bohemian neighborhood in Chicago, and instead I find it practically in my own backyard. Wake up early on the weekends, because Skillet fills up fast. By noon you'll be waiting around 10-20 minutes for a table, but be patient because it's worth the wait. Ordering is done cafeteria style - head to the back of the room and order your meal and make sure to get a mug for coffee, which is self serve. Skillet's menu is small and changes regularly depending on what's in season. Some breakfast items seem to be staples, such as the Rosemary-Cheddar "Catshead" Biscuit and the Rustic Traditional Breakfast. My first time dining at Skillet I ordered some sort of Vanilla Mascarpone Risotto with Figs. It was my first experience with risotto and I wasn't really pleased. My plate was so buttery and overpoweringly flavorful. I've noticed that they've taken it off the menu, but I actually think it would have worked well as a side dish with a bit of toning down. My next visit I ordered something on the safer side, the Rustic Traditional Breakfast with Cherrywood Bacon. Oh sweet delicious salty bacon, fingerling potatoes (you wouldn't believe how good these are) and two local eggs. I licked every last crispy bit and yolk from my plate. The staff is beyond friendly and you feel as if you're dining in a B&B - rustic, quaint, and a little bit country. Skillet Math 101: divide by four. Party of three or four? Good! You're fine at one of the larger tables. Party of five? Don't try to squeeze into one table. That only works if one of the party members is a young child or anorexic, but in the latter case they probably wouldn't be with you enjoying deliciousness at Skillet. Two tables for you. Party of seven or eight? Two larger tables necessary. And there aren't many of those. Party of nine or more? HA! Are you crazy?? I'll return to this in a minute, but I'm going to get something out of the way first: Skillet's food is exemplary. Their menu doesn't appear to have a single subpar dish, and I've heard nothing but praise for the food from all attendees. The Shaved Brussels and Roast Beef Hash is the single best breakfast I've had since moving to Ohio. The kitchen understands that a focused menu of expertly prepared dishes trumps the spray-and-pray method of offering every traditional breakfast variation possible, as most restaurants attempt. Back to Skillet Math 101, and why this isn't a five star review. On my first visit with fellow Yelpers, we split into two tables and were seated within a half hour. My second trip, on a somewhat warmer Sunday, was twice the wait. This was with a party of five. We didn't follow the Skillet Math rules, and like bad students we were sent to detention. For me that meant I was the packed sardine on the inside seat of the booth with the back of another booth against my side, rendering me one-armed for the remainder of the meal. We had to play our best Dish Tetris (coming to a smartphone near you) to organize too many round objects into too small a rectangular space. Luckily nobody ended up with grits or coffee in their lap, though it was close. The bigger problem on my second visit was the order of operations in seating our party. I put down our name at 10:30 (yes, you do this yourself -- there's no flipping room for a host). A party of seven showed up a half hour later, putting in a reservation at 10:59. Somehow they were seated at 11:20, divided into tables of four and three, while my party was left waiting. Calling out one of the waitresses for this faux pas resulted in abashed apologies but no real attempt to rectify the situation, only the explanation that the party of seven was willing to sit at two separate tables. Don't give a cat crap, miss -- either of those tables should have been filled by my party. Everyone who goes to Skillet has to understand that the dining area is the size of a thimble. Skillet, be smart about it. Seat your parties in order, and don't pull any jassackery. Food? Five stars. Never less. Experience? Two to four stars, depending on your luck. This concludes our lesson. I typically love skillet! The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is always very inviting and cozy. I live within walking distance (15min stroll) so we call ahead and leave our name as we are walking out the door. So we have minimal wait time upon arrival. They always have coffee outside for those waiting and the coffee is delicious. Why only 3 stars? The menu has no vegan options and no vegetarian options. In the past the kitchen has accommodated by taking the meat out of one of their dishes. But today I was told they couldn't do that. As a vegetarian I don't expect restaurants to have a bunch of options, but typically there is at least ONE option or they are willing to accommodate. Very disappointed today. read more

Not a good experience. The foul odor emanating from the kitchen area should have been a big red flag--probably a full grease trap. I ordered the "Roasted Chicken with Biscuits and Gravy" but received only biscuits and gravy. The server informed me that the chicken was "in the gravy"... At least I will get a much better meal for my money at Bob Evans, without the deceptive menu description. The server didn't offer to remove the item from the bill, and fomy part, I'll be happy to warn everyone to stay away and save their money for a better hole-in-the-wall. We had wanted to try Skillet for so long and are terribly disappointed to give a bad review but tragically our experience warranted one. On arrival we were pleased with everything. The Hazelnut cold brew coffee was delicious and the 'same day' milk tasted like they had a cow in the back. We decided to split the cinnamon roll which was very good; the sauce was amazing but we wished it was more on the roll as opposed to just pooled at the bottom. My girlfriend ordered the huevos rancheros and I ordered the vegetarian omelet. The food came out incredibly fast, so fast we had each only had about one bite of the cinnamon roll. Despite a nice presentation, the omelet was just a cooked egg with vegetables on top and some of the vegetables were terribly bitter. The huevos rancheros was presented nicely as well and tasted good but came out luke warm. We asked our waitress to rectify this by reheating the dish and presumed it would be put in the broiler however, it was microwaved, resulting in a hot rubbery finish for the food ruining the dish. I went here for brunch, and it was YUM! I'll come back many times! The restaurant is small and cozy, which only adds to its character. The rustic decor is pretty cool. We went on a Saturday at around 11:30, so there was about a 30 minute wait. They let you put your phone number down if you don't want to wait outside (which we did, since it was cold!). We ordered the Cheese Blintzes (a main course) to share as an appetizer, along with a Dan the Baker pie (raspberry and corn custard). It was perfect, though I wish we saved one of those sweet dishes for a "brunch dessert". We got the Lamb Sausage and Gravy Biscuits as well as the Curried Goat Poutine (per our waiter's suggestion) for our mains. They were so good! And the portions are BIG (can easily box half of it if that's your thing). Overall, great service and a great value. We also had endless Cafe Brioso coffee, and a Mexican Coca Cola. This is one of my favorite places in Columbus to enjoy a nice hearty Southern breakfast. I was impressed by the friendly waitstaff and efficient way they made their way through the long line of waiting customers. I recommend ordering the cinnamon rolls. The vibes were hipstery, trendy, claustrophobic, muggy, and Southern. Décor was OK. So, I really really wanted to love this place. I've heard such great things about it and all the reviews were fantastic. Not sure if this was the reason or the annoyingly long wait, but I can tell you that neither the food nor the ambience was worth the wait for me. Our server was polite but seemed rather rushed. In fact everything seemed rather rushed here. The tea was lukewarm. I ordered the smoked chicken omelette, which was edible but nothing great. My wife had the french toast.
