Every time I come here I just love it so much. It's awesome to see so many vegan items on the menu, makes it hard to choose. I honestly always come for breakfast, it's just so good. And my friend who met me this time isn't vegan but loved her vrunchwrap. Given that it is a completely plant based experience--I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of menu options. They have burgers, salads that can be made into wraps, milkshakes, and a full breakfast menu. Service is quick (maybe too quick? This statement alone sparked my curiosity while on a business trip to the Midwest. 4th & State is a wonderful place in America's heartland offering up traditional diner fare made from plant based ingredients. I read all of the Yelp reviews and decided to walk over from my downtown Columbus hotel to check it out. It's easy to find (on the corner of South 4th Street and East State Street), as you'll see people waiting outside to be lucky enough to snag one of the limited dining room table seats. Be prepared to wait with other hungry and health-conscious customers. Even as a solo diner on a late Sunday morning, I was told the wait would be about an hour. I was able to leave my name and received a curtesy call 45 minutes later once my table was available. My friendly server came over to offer me something to drink, asked if I had any questions and presented some of the specials for the day. After taking several moments to pour over the great-sound menu, I decided to go with the Statehouse Breakfast ($18) - Two pancakes or French Toast served with a choice of breakfast sides. In my case, I went with the seasonal Cinnamon Apple French Toast, with Hashbrowns (GF/SF) and Seitan Sausage. Service was very attentive, although customers should know that during peak busy times, you will wait a good 20-30 minutes for your order to arrive. This has nothing to do with efficiency, as the food is served up hot, fresh and tasty - it's simply a matter of good food takes time to prepare. Finally, my food arrived (with an smile and an apology for the wait from my server). It was well worth the wait. The seasonal Cinnamon Apple French Toast was spectacular. The caramelized apple bits mixed with an outstanding whipped cream and syrup was absolutely incredible. The toast itself was wonderfully soft and tasty, with just a slight hint of crisp on the crust corners. Add an extra $1 to the Statehouse Breakfast if you choose to add the Seasonal option(s) to your order. The Hashbrowns (GF/SF) were also quite good. Great crisp outer texture with delicious soft potato interior, all without the guilt. The plant-based meat substitute Seitan Sausage links were also tasty. The prices are on par with what you would find at other diners, but without the greasy spoon guilt. A well-known vegan spot in town! My friend and I came here for dinner one day. Parking is parallel, but we found free parking less than a block away. There were people sitting inside but it wasn't all that busy. The menu is huge! Really great for vegetarians and vegans. They also serve breakfast, which my friend and I agreed to return and try. We ordered a few things to share: taco vrunchwrap, jalapeño popper pizza, and the lone star burger. While everything looked small, we were both very full by the end of it! The pizza had a nice creamy texture and the vrunchwrap was a solid vegan take on Taco Bell's crunch wrap. The lone star burger was interesting. I don't dislike tempeh, but it was cooked a bit too crispy for me. But I'm not vegan, so I'm no expert! It came with fries, so we opted for the loaded option. The ranch and vegan bacon were perfection! My favorite item on the menu! Overall, it was a fun time! The staff is very friendly and helpful. And the large menu made it tough to decide what to eat! Over three years ago, my wife and I wandered into 4th & State when we'd walked by it for the fiftieth time and boy, were we in for a treat. Over 100 visits later, we've come to view this restaurant as our second home. The food is out of this world and the service is the only thing that exceeds the flavorful options. The owner Chad is such a sweetheart and has gone out of his way to chat us up for a few moments between his busy work in the back. We were fortunate to be part of the Top Vegan season 2 show on YouTube hosted by Chad. Sadly, this might be one of our last times here as my wife and I are moving out of the downtown area. My friend's friend worked here so I am biased that we had great service. We got to influence the playlist so that helped as well. It was full most of the time so it seemed to be a great place to go. While I am not a big breakfast place, it was nice they served it all day and had the regular lunch menu. We got the pancakes and they are soft, fluffy squares that really fill you up. My dreams have come true. As someone who just moved back to Columbus from Austin Tx - this would be $25 easily there and prob not as big. While I don't want restaurants in Columbus to underprice their menu, prices like that is what kept me from getting carry out that much the 4 years I lived there. Was in town for a concert, so I decided to check out the local Vegan scene. 4th & State was so good that I made a return trip before I left. A small restaurant, the food here was fantastic and I was pleased to see that they offered both lunch/dinner options and breakfast. I had the Jalapeño Cheddar Burger for dinner when I got into town. I didn't expect for the burger to be situated between pieces of toast and thought that I'd be displeased but it was amazing and worked extremely well. I thought I'd have room for what looked to be their amazing dessert but I was full by the time I was done. I originally planned to find a diner for breakfast the next morning but kept thinking about 4th & State and elected to just return. The interior is so cute with plants, quiet music, and a nice layout. There is a counter to order to-go items and pick up phone orders, or you can be seated to dine in like I like to do. The French toast sticks were excellent. There were two dipping sauces - one syrup and another a cinnamon cream cheese style dip which was my favorite. I rocked up to this vegan diner about a half hour or so after it opened, to find no open tables. I was surprised; vegan is a niche, and I don't even think this is the most reputed vegan diner in Columbus, though it is downtown (which is why I chose it). Good sign I guess. I ordered takeout and ate it outside. Diner food, even when vegan, is not what I would call healthy, but I took the carb hit of a french toast with a chocolate marshmallow cream on the side to make it like a vegan s'mores. It was about as fluffy and tasty as any french toast. The option to get it with sides left me with some homefries and what turned out to be a brand of ketchup that I think supports veterans, as well as a Just Egg scramble. I like that they have Just Egg; a lot of these sorts of places do tofu, and that has its merits, but it's nice to have a non-soy, high protein option as well, and while I have no idea what actual scrambled eggs taste like, I find this mung bean-based gooey stuff has a pretty neutral flavor and a strangely appealing texture. Anyway, I was fairly impressed to have gotten this in a nice-looking centrally located space, and if I were coming with a group, I would definitely consider getting a reservation at peak times. read more
