I've visited Astra a few times now and have been consistently impressed. I initially expected "standard" rooftop fare, but the food is actually high quality. The cheese fries are a standout--the sauce is incredibly smooth and rich--and the crispy rice is excellent (it's just as good as Forno's, which makes sense given the connection). The only miss for me was the salad; it arrived in large chunks with a thin layer of dressing, making it messy and difficult to eat without a lot of DIY prep. That said, the service is always top-notch and the space itself is beautiful. I had the silver platter fries as an appetizer, and we split the lobster mac & cheese which was so good (strongly recommend this to any lobster or mac & cheese lovers). Astra rooftop was an amazing experience when I went for a girls night out in December! We walked in at 5:15 for happy hour and stayed for three hours because it was so enjoyable. First, it wasn't too crowded so the noise was really minimal, which was perfect for talking. Second, our server was INCREDIBLE. Not only was he so funny and warm, but when we were looking over at another table at their boozy mini mint ice creams, he brought us over an order on the house. I didn't get to try their larger menu items but the small bites I had were really good! The bartenders are also cool and made some tasty drinks. I specifically ordered the Philly Sando bc they ran out of the burger but I'm not upset about it because they the Philly Sando was great! Full of meat and so many fries on the side! To be honest I made this reservation for Christmas Eve a little last minute, so my expectations were somewhat low. BUT the food was great, the service was really good and the ambiance was perfect! We got there at 5:40 and didn't realize it was happy hour - half off small bites and drinks, which was surprising for a holiday! We got a couple cocktails - pineapple whip (very good), porn Star martini (very good) and a beer. The glasses they use for drinks stood out for their high quality and uniqueness. Last night, I was celebrating an award a close friend received and we decided to go to Astra. Who would've thought this would be the second highlight of our night! This restaurant, on the 8th floor, as soon as you enter, lets you know you've hit a classy trendy space! We were welcomed so graciously by the staff at the door and seated promptly on the terrace! We were first seated in a very nice bungalow. Forgive me for not having photos. Just let me tell you this, if you're looking to impress on date night, definitely call and reserve this! We were served by Sam who was incredible! He gave us excellent recommendations like the Bang Bang shrimp, dessert, and drink options! We wanted to see the views more, so he promptly reseated us at a 3 top with one of the most amazing views of the city! Our friend invited us to their Grand Opening party. After we got our wristbands and 2 free drink tickets we rode the elevator to the top. The place was beautiful with a bar to the left of the elevator and outdoor seating that had a nice view of downtown. The drinks we got to try was a spicy margarita that was both delicious and refreshing and an expresso martini. They came in the cutest glassware! We also got to sample a few different pizzas, the scallops, a few desserts and the tomahawk steak. All the food was delicious and the pizzas were my favorite! We went during happy hour so the cocktails, starters and flat breads were half off which is a pretty large happy hour menu if you ask me! Looking back I wish I would have ordered one of the flat breads instead because the Philly Sando was a little underwhelming... it could be my fault since I'm a Philly cheesesteak fanatic and I kept wondering where the cheese wiz was. My husband thought the burger was fine but that the wedge salad was dry. The bang bang shrimp was soggy - I kept waiting for a more crunchy, fried type of bite but they just kept getting soggier. This experience was awful. The only thing that was good was the whipped ricotta to start. Our waitress was not attentive and didn't really come to us at all. We went to celebrate and no one even asked if we were there for anything. We were sat as a couple in between 2 parties of 20. We were right in the middle aisle with no view and kept getting run into. Overall very average experience - our waitress was great and super nice! The service was great. The ambience was also fun and with a group of friends would be great. I'm rating it at 2 because of the food. We ordered the smoked ribs, bang bang shrimp, sando tower, burger, and two flatbreads - pepperoni and mushroom and sausage. We also had an array of cocktails at our table. The smoked ribs were incredibly dry. The bang bang shrimp was good but the portion was a bit small. The burger was very average. The sando tower had fun presentation but was nothing special for the price. The two flatbreads were also average and did not standout much. Overall I would say food-wise they are more concerned about presentation than taste and quality. In my opinion - if you are looking for a place to hang out with girlfriends with a couple of drinks it's great. This was my first time at Astra Rooftop and I absolutely LOVED IT! The ambiance was amazing! It had intriguing decorations with a good vibe but yet seating was very intimate. Our bartenders Jack and Will were unmatched! They spoke to us in a timely manner and had great drink recommendations. We were told about happy hour times and the included items without having to ask. Amazing decor and ambiance! The indoor area is perfect even during colder weather. The service was excellent our waiter came by the table three times before happy hour ended to make sure we didn't want to place any more orders. My girlfriends & I booked several weeks in advance with the hopes of a fun and exciting New Year's Eve at what we heard to be the best new rooftop in town. I understand NYE can be crazy busy, but the overbooking was even crazier. Our reservation was at 10:30pm, we showed up at 10:15, and come 10:50 those reservations before us still hadn't gotten seated. We ultimately canceled after the news that we wouldn't seated for at least another half hour, to which the kind manager referred us to the back room where the party was for some finger foods. There wasn't any food left when we got there. To add on to that, when we asked when more food will come out, the male employee at the host stand in front of the room kept saying he had just gotten there and didn't know anything. We had an early reservation at Astra at 5:45. Before the hostess even seated us, she told me they were going to have a busy night and our table was only good for two hours. No problem. We actually ended up there for almost two hours because service was so slow in a few places, especially with dessert. But I am getting ahead of myself. Astra was loud. Really loud. More like a club atmosphere. Five of us were crammed at the end of a table that should have seated 8-10 and we were hunched over the table yelling at each other throughout the meal just to be able to hear. It was not great. The wine list was wacky. First of all, if your sauv blanc offering is Kim Crawford, just stop. Also who puts four Napa cabs on the menu? If you are going to devote space to cab, at least change up the terroir. Food was very average. We got the whipped ricotta, potstickers and deviled eggs for apps. They were fine but there wasn't anything memorable. Entrees were Ok, but the lobster Mac and cheese needed some seasoning and perhaps some herbs or other flavors. The waitress also stopped by to ask how our entrees were after they were delivered and we had to point out that we were still missing one for a person in our party. She was on it and brought it within 5 minutes. We ordered two servings of the boozy ice cream cones (the menu says they come in 4s) and we were delivered a pack with 6. We sat and waited for the second set kind of confused and also an order of olive oil cake that another person in our party ordered. We waited for about another 5 minutes and it didn't come, so we just started eating the ice cream since it was starting to melt. I asked for the check and the olive oil cake came out at the same time, the last dessert for the person in our party. It was a weird dinner. I can't see myself going back, between the noise, wacky service and just OK food. Too bad. I was hoping for better since I am such a fan of Forno. Oh well. read more
