Changes the menu everyday?! This quaint but very pleasing restaurant offered us a nice breakfast this morning. Wondering how well they do on a daily basis, I was impressed with my biscuits and gravy and the French toast. The French toast was plentiful big and fluffy paired with a whipped butter and maple syrup. The biscuits were just as big in size and I'm glad I settled with only one instead of two! The chicken gravy was so flavorful and had a beautiful color. Seriously delicious. All of it! The cinnamon roll coffee was not to sweet but also not over bearing in coffee or espresso taste, just executed nicely. The other person I was with also had an omelette with the same problem. I like that they carry local raised meats but they charged $50. My wife and I were in town for a hockey game in the next morning we wanted to find a local place to get some brunch. As Yelp had this as highly recommended we decided to give it a chance. It's located in a neighborhood that appears to be a working class neighborhood with cars parked on both sides of the streets as you can find a place to park pretty easily I think. When you get up to the restaurant I quickly got the vibe that this was a local place and I don't think tourists are wanted there. There's a cool little skillet for a door handle but that's where the coolness ended. It was freezing cold and there's no breezeway or vestibule so when you open the door everyone inside looks at you like you're the devil because now they're getting Frozen. There's an iPad right in the middle and five empty tables some of them were on bust. There is really no sense of urgency anywhere with any of the employees. A girl came up and asked us to put her name in the iPad because there was a 20 minute wait for a table. Of the five empty tables. That were not bussed. There was no line. So we put her name in but there was nowhere to stand although they do have a bar for some reason. We ended up going outside and waiting for about 5 minutes while we watched the server decide whether or not she was going to actually bus the tables. After much introspection she decided against it apparently. We were freezing. At this point I decided I didn't want to get Frozen while I was eating and right away I got a vibe that the service was not going to be spectacular so we bailed. Definitely a better experience today, though the food was decidedly mixed. Came on a weekday morning, no wait. It is tiny, and there is no room to wait, so be prepared especially in bad weather. Luckily, one of our phones had enough signal, and we picked what we wanted but actually gave our order to the server. Good coffee. Sweetie got cheesy hash browns and was completely underwhelmed. She had wanted pancakes, but none on the menu. The hash browns looked fine but had no flavor and were swimming in- grease? Something that didn't belong there. She barely ate any. I tried a bite after she shoved it away and, yeah, blah. Big portion, but no one was interested. I had to get goetta because I like it and have made it. And it was excellent. One piece a tad overcooked, but still okay. Tiny tiny portion though. I also ordered a Swedish sausage, thinking I would have plenty to take home, but after the goetta I was still pretty hungry. Polished it off too. It was reasonably sized, and an excellent, subtle but savory, sausage. Either meat with a couple of eggs would be a decent but still fairly small breakfast. I've been wanting to try this restaurant for a while now. And I finally made the time to do so. I didn't realize how small it was until I walked it. It was a quiet quaint restaurant. I ordered the bacon egg and cheese sandwich, with a side of hash browns . The sandwich was huge . It was pretty tasty. Also I ordered the oatmeal pie latte (cold) which was phenomenal. And I ordered the cheese blintzes which was tasty! I thought the overall experience was okay. I would rate the place at least a solid 7. I definitely would go back to try more menu options. Skillet has been on our list of brunch places to try for quite some time. We finally gave it a go, and had heard that there is usually a wait because the inside is rather small. Well, that is a bit of an understatement -- the inside is very crammed, and there's only about 5 tables. They do have a tiny bar area, but they weren't letting any parties sit there. The wait time was only about 25 minutes when we went. They don't take call aheads or reservations -- just check in on an iPad when you arrive to join the waitlist. They have a rotating menu, and it's quite small -- not like your typical brunch place. They don't have physical menus, so make sure your phone is charged so you can scan the QR code. The online menu is a little goofy on the phone browser because you have to click on each item to read the description, then go back to the home page and select again. The prices are also quite a bit higher than you'll find at most places, which fits with the niche farm to table theme. But $5 for a simple cup of coffee? Hmmm. I guess they have to make up for only being open 3 days a week. We started with cheese blintz for the table -- crepes filled with sheep's milk ricotta and crème Anglaise, topped with blackberries. These were the (only) star of the show and definitely would recommend trying them. My SO tried the biscuits & gravy, touted on the menu as blackened chicken breasts in a peppery veloute over a griddled "cat's head" biscuit topped with scrambled eggs. I'm not sure if it was the veloute or what, but the chicken looked like it came straight from a can and should be served to a cat -- maybe that's how they decided on the "cat's head" biscuit? Do not recommend. I tried the farmhouse ranch cheese burger. It's comes with what appeared to be Lay's kettle chips. The ranch cheese was actually really good, but otherwise the burger was average and not worth the $23 price tag. The others at the table both got the breakfast sando, which had scrambled eggs and cheddar on griddled hot cross buns with a maple mustard. Want to add bacon? You can get 3 slices for $10. The service was a bit lackluster, which I didn't quite understand since they serve so few patrons at a given time. For example, we ordered coffees and had cream and sugar. We had no silverware or anything to mix the coffee with. Eventually, we asked for silverware but they didn't bring it out until we got our meals. Also, it was just all around slow. Lastly, the claustrophobic box of a restaurant had such poor air flow and it was so hot that everyone at our table was sweating by the time we got our food. In fact, it actually felt better outside the restaurant than inside. Overall, pretty disappointing experience at Skillet and definitely won't be back. The only thing salvaging this from a 1 star review are the cheese blintz, which I would get again in a heartbeat, but seeing as we won't be back, that doesn't really matter. read more

This is one of the best brunches I have had anywhere. Only open Fri / Sat / Sun from 8:30 - 1:30 on a first come first serve basis, the wait is definitely worth it and my wife and I always make a point to get our "Skillet fix" in whenever we are in town or passing through. Service staff are friendly and extremely well trained. Tiny but incredibly charming dining room. Highly recommend - and if the hamburger is on the menu, don't hesitate! I take back the 1 star. I award no stars. I am absolutely furious that I even have to write this. But I DO have to write this because Skillet was once a place where meals felt personal and real and worth leaving the house for. What it has become is an insult wearing its old name like a stolen jacket. It has been desecrated, gutted, and stuffed with incompetence, apathy, and waste. You walk in expecting a nice restaurant. What you get is a tech hostage situation. You must order through a glitchy QR code system that eats twenty minutes of your life before refusing your card like you are trying to commit brunch fraud. At that point, you are not dining. You are trapped in UX hell. Then the water. $1.50 for sixteen ounces of tap water. Not filtered. Not sparkling. Not blessed by monks. Regular tap water. And it takes fifteen minutes to arrive, in a plastic cup with a lid and straw like you are on a field trip to a landfill. That is the theme here. Waste. Waste everywhere. A once conscious kitchen now creating more trash than a state fair fried butter stand. Every food item arrives entombed in paper, cardboard, plastic, and wax paper that steams everything into a limp, sad, soggy insult. It tastes and feels like someone microwaved your dignity and wrapped it in sweat. You do not get plates anymore. You get garbage masquerading as plating. Salt and pepper. Hidden. Like contraband. Like they do not want you to have flavor or hope. Hot sauce. $1.50 for a tiny squeeze of something that used to be free back when this place still cared about being a restaurant instead of a cautionary tale. And then they parade over with your receipt like hall monitors who finally found a purpose, checking off items in front of your face and arguing with you when the food you clearly paid for never arrives. It is like being gaslit by cafeteria workers who have given up on life and want you to join them. This is not a decline. It is not a stumble. It is a betrayal. A once genuine place turned into a soulless cash-grab wrapped in trash and served with contempt. Skillet is now the kind of restaurant that makes you go home and mourn. Not just the meal you did not get, but the place it used to be and the respect it once had for its customers and itself. If you ever loved this restaurant, honor its memory by staying far far FAR away. What stands there now is not Skillet. Hubby surprised me with brunch out at Skillet in the German Village on a recent Saturday morning - what a treat! There's no room for waiting in this tiny space, but you can go in to join the online waitlist via QR code. Then, you can walk around the neighborhood or wait in your warm car. The wait seemed to go fairly quickly. Skillet's space is quite small and has a rustic, urban feel with exposed brick and a view through to the kitchen. The amazing aroma of breakfast food permeated the space as well as the surrounding neighborhood for several blocks! My companion and I shared the cheesy potatoes. I was expecting crispy fried potatoes with cheese, but they were fingerlings with no crispy edges to be found. That said, they were delicious - the cheese mixture used was absolutely heavenly. We opted for a fried egg on top - a must-have! Our server told us the portions are generous, and boy was she right. Even with sharing a dish, we still brought some leftovers home. We also shared the Sticky Toffee Pudding cake which was scrumptious. The cake was a bit dry on the outside, but the inside was moist and flavorful. A very nice sweet treat for any time. Overall, we were impressed and will be back! Skillet has a rotating menu so you never know what is being served on any given day. There is a small bar inside along with limited seating in the dining area. The staff were friendly and our server was happy to explain the menu. The bacon, egg & cheese was good, fresh bacon and bread. I wasn't a huge fan of the eggs. The grits were ok, different, but ok. My buddy tried the lamb sausage and was raving about it and the homemade hot sauce ($1.50). The potatoes were good, more of a dinner side but flavorful nonetheless. I would recommend going before 11AM because going after that might put you at risk of near closing time. There is street parking available since it's in German Village. Very small little restaurant and this is my second time being here. It was hot in the restaurant though because I'm not sure if they have air conditioning, but there were fans on. We were seated by the windows which was nice. We ordered the egg sando with sausage, grits and greens, and a side of biscuits and gravy! We also ordered the cold brew and they bring out a little thing of creamer and sugar if you ask for it. The food came out pretty quick. The egg sando should be illegal for how good it looks. The eggs were so fluffy and it was a big sandwich! The grits and greens were alright. It came with a poached egg, but was kind of lacking flavor. This is my second time trying to try this place after all the great reviews people were telling me about! The first time we came around 11 and they were completely out of seats for the day, so given that we didn't wanna wait in the insane weekend lines, we just got our order to-go this time. The hype is real. I'm always a sucker for a fantastic biscuits and gravy, which was one of our favs from the place. The cheesy potatoes were also amazing - just the right amount of spicy to cut through all the fat from everything. The griddled cinnamon bun was less great but I think that's largely secondary to taking it to-go since it was a little cold and soggy by the time we got to it, so we'll definitely have to try that in-person next time. read more

Solid four stars for Skillet. For starters, the wait for a party of two was much shorter than I anticipated. When we joined the waitlist around noon on a Saturday, the kiosk displayed that there were 17 people in front of us, but somehow we only had to wait 5 minutes for a table. Biscuits and Gravy were good, especially the gravy. Griddled Cinnamon Roll was aided by a very sweet maple icing. Grits with cheese were very nice. Regarding the Cheesy Taters, the cheese curds definitely hit better than the fingerling potatoes for me. I added a scrambled egg to it for $2 which was a wise decision that helped the overall dish... as did a side of their house made hot sauce which seemed to be chipotle-based. This place is so incredibly good! I had the biscuits and gravy, which were incredible. My dad had a skillet with sweet potatoes, and my nephew the biscuits with root beer jam! My only regret, was not being able to finish my food. I cannot say enough good things about the service. We sat at the bar (no tables available) with a five year old, and the owner was our server and he was so accommodating and nice. My nephew was a bit rambunctious. Wow, this was probably the best version I'd ever had: the biscuit, eggs and sausage gravy all had their own great flavors...it was almost overwhelming. I can't imagine how much salt went into making that plate of deliciousness! I also tried the grilled cinnamon roll, which was also very good...the seasonal fruit preserves were a nice touch. This was a Saturday Bruch-day suggested by a friend of mine. She had hard of Skillet and said we should try it; good call! I don't know how I was not aware of this gem that has been around for over a decade but better late than never. Upon entering the venue I could tell it was going to be great just from the vibe of the patrons and the staff (who happen to be mostly family). There are no reservations but just like everyone else I was happy to wait until my turn. Once seated I was in love with the selection of food and drinks. I started with an Irish coffee and so did my friend. PERFECT! The menu changes al out daily so my delicious brisket hash may not be available but if it ever is offered I highly suggest trying it out. My friend got biscuits accompanied by butter and homemade jam - looked delicious but I was working on what I ordered so I did not try her food but the biscuits looked picture perfect. During my meal I also opted for a Bloody Mary - another win; it was pickled and spicy. Speaking of spicy, they have a house made maple hot sauce we tried and purchased. And finally, since everything was so good - including service - I ordered a to-go of biscuits and gravy for my mom; she was amazed - the eggs were arranged like a fan over the biscuits w/ the gravy on the side. I'll be up front: we didn't end up eating here. However, there were a few things that prior to even getting the opportunity to sit down disappointed us... when you walk in you just enter your own info into an iPad and do not speak to any person. This was fine but the iPad doesn't send a confirmation text to confirm you are in line, so then I was worried I had miss entered my info, I went to ask someone who worked there (who was not doing anything, just standing there) and they seemed annoyed and like it was a dumb question. PSA: you only get a text once your table is ready! There is also not really anything around to go to while you wait... you pretty much have to loiter outside, which if it's not a nice day, is not enjoyable... Once I finally got my text saying it was our turn we were walking and they gave me literally TWO minutes to reply, after it had taken them over an hour to even give us any info via text to give a second text with what I thought was a pretty rude tone saying "It's your turn. Please come by or let us know if you are not coming." I can't rate the food, because again we didn't end up eating there but overall I was pretty disappointed... we were excited to eat there and the vibes were off from the get go....
