Tried this diner for the first time. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich on a croissant and I loved how the croissant was toasted. There was a decent amount of chicken in the salad. The French fries were hot and seasoned well. My husband ordered the turkey club sandwich and it had a good amount of sliced turkey on it. Our waitress was attentive to our needs. Sirius radio was playing in the background. We will definitely come back if we are in the area. read more

Abner's is a nice, cheap spot in old hilliard that is a Towne Staple. We arrived early morning Friday and seated ourselves due to a sign stating to do so. It was moderately quiet with no booths available only tables left. so this must be a morning ritual for a lot of folks nearby. While waiting for our menus we got lost in the past of old Hilliard with all the cool pictures and historical photos. They had so many framed photos on the walls. When we did receive our menus my daughter opted for a kids French toast with bacon which was only 4.99 on the kids menu. I opted for biscuits and gravy with house potatoes and eggs over easy for 11.99! Nice execution of B&G with a yummy country gravy. Biscuits were a little hard on the edges but that was the only thing left on my plate. With some salt and pepper added to my meal it was a fulfilling and tasty breakfast. The business was moderately busy. We were seated in 3 minutes or less. We were greeted with smiles and hello's from the staff. The service was friendly and informative. The atmosphere was that of a local eatery which we were looking for. We made our order and the food was exactly what we ordered and it was delivered in a timely matter. A great little casual spot right in the heart of Hilliard! While in the Columbus OH area for work one of my co-workers and I stopped in at Abner's for breakfast. Street parking was open early in the morning, but I noticed a couple of nearby lots too. For us it was seat yourself...but it was early. Cash or card. Ordering and payment was done at the table with our server. The decor is old school. Dimly lit with lots of hard wood. The menu is easy to navigate and the staff was friendly and attentive. We both just did standard breakfasts so there really wasn't anything too picturesque. Just solid food! If you find yourself in the Hilliard are and are looking for something local this is a nice little stop I can definitely recommend. read more

Stopped an ad for a nice breakfast while traveling on business. Was welcome as soon as I walked in love all the Ohio State paraphernalia on the walls, as well as the large clock. It didn't take long for me to place an order and the food came out really quick. Really good service and the waitress was on top of my coffee all morning. Biscuits and gravy with eggs along with one pancake. Everything was really good. Had a great experience so I will be back. read more

We were visiting the Hilliard area and love their old downtown. We were feeling brunch and thought the diner vibe was perfect. With street parking and near by lots it was easy to find a spot even on Saturday. Walked in and there was plenty of space. Super friendly and casual staff welcomed us. Looked like a lot of locals. We had the Abner special (bologna) and a simple breakfast. Service was fast and friendly. I would say food was fresh, very simple, not a lot of seasoning, and very small portions. I have been going here with my family for years and I have been loving the club sandwich it is the best sandwich you will get at a dinner in my opinion and it's affordable considering what your getting. They waiters are always super nice and friendly and are not rude and try their best to help you. The lights aren't blinding and it isn't loud the atmosphere is calm and friendly . Since the last time we ate at Abner's, now with the patty melt any side is extra. Ordered the patty melt ( it was ok (too well done for my taste (was not asked how I would like it done)). The fries I ordered with the sandwich were cold, and by the time anyone asked how our dinners were, I was done with the sandwich. I did not eat the fries ,nor had a new batch brought out (too late by the time I was asked) and they were taken off the bill. The real issue was that 2 patty melts, 1 order of tater tots (which were also cold) and no drinks was $30.00. The best part of our trip was definitely the service. Sophia was our waitress, and she was very attentive and took lots of time to answer all our questions. When our friend couldn't have any of the normal sides, she offered lots of substitutes. The food was a little meh for us. My friend had Abner's Burrito and described it as a bunch of random meat thrown together that shouldn't have been put together. My other friend had the breakfast bowl, and she only rated it a 6/10. I had the chocolate chip pancakes, and they were good but very small. I was definitely still hungry after. It was very homey inside, and I think a lot of the customers were regulars. My only complaint was the bathroom floor was very sticky, and the stall had two confusing locks. Overall, I don't think I'd highly recommend it, but I wouldn't be opposed to coming back here. read more

The steak sandwich was one piece of soggy bread cut in half with a piece of hard dry steak. $16?? The Reuben had 4 slices of meat on it. Located in downtown "Old Hilliard", on Main street which I like to call "Restaurant Row" because there are many choices for dining. Abner's is one of a few restaurants offering breakfast and it is worthy of repeat customer visits. Menu: B The menu is filled with the traditional diner menu expectations, including two full pages of breakfast menu selections. This was my first visit, so I went with my ultimate breakfast litmus test: omelette and home fries. Generally, if you like how this is prepared - you will like the entire menu. (The litmus test for lunch/dinner is chili, of course - but it was only 10:30am so eggs were my agenda) The omelette. It's a "make your own" version, which I appreciate. You select ingredients and the majority were a mere $0.35 each. Meats and cheese were slightly more - but very good value overall. I selected jalapeno, onion, bacon, and cheddar cheese. I asked my waitress about the potatoes and chose the home fries since they are hand-sliced and fried. I also selected an english muffin instead of my usual rye toast - this is not part of the litmus test, so I do vary this selection from time to time. Price: B+ Inexpensive to moderate, good value for serving size and selection. My omelette was $9.05 and included potatoes and toast (home fries, english muffin selected). The coffee was an additional $2.50 or so - not the best value if you plan on drinking just one cup but that's your decision (not a good decision) and the coffee is quite good. Food: B+ While the omelette was well cooked, I agree with most reviews stating the food is bland - but this was the simple lack of seasoning during cooking. Adding pepper and salt after cooking does not yield the same result in flavor but it's close enough and judging by the clientele, it's probably preferred to err on the side of low-sodium for the masses. Overall, it was a very satisfying meal. Staff: A From being greeted and encouraged to choose my own seat to having my drink order taken to my food order taken and delivered (4 different people) - everyone was friendly and efficient. The restaurant wasn't busy but it ran smoothly and my food did not take long to prepare. I am plotting a return visit to try the chili soon .... I came after church for breakfast and it was getting close to 10:30. They've got parking behind it, so no issue there! They told us it'd be a 5-10 minute wait, but we waited maybe 2 minutes before getting seated. It's a popular place! I saw elderly couples and families, mostly. They rep newspaper articles and sports stuff for Hilliard's high school sports teams. Felt like a neighborhood diner with patrons that've been coming here for years. Service was fantastic! We got our waters quickly. They take plates and clean tables fast too. They were all really nice and seem to love working here. I ordered me a Reuben sandwich with a side of tots. Yum! Those tots were nice and crunchy! My Reuben had the 1000 island on the side. It tasted unique and homemade and it gave a nice flavor to the sandwich. I wasn't a fan of the type of Swiss cheese they used, but it was a pretty decent Reuben overall. My friends got breakfast. One built her own omelet. She put tomatoes, mushrooms, and onions in it. She got hash on the side and two biscuits, which were fluffy. My other friend got 2 buttermilk pancakes with 2 sausages and an egg. You can choose to have links or patties, but she got the patties. The pancakes were fluffy and buttery and the sausage was tasty. She felt like the egg was cooked in bacon grease. Not a problem to her, but she could taste the flavor in it. It's possible that that's true or that they cook bacon on the same spot as everything else. Great prices though! Everything is below $10, so you don't have to break the bank!! I went here with a friend. I wanted us to try a new restaurant. We both enjoyed our food. She got the cornmeal pancakes (which she thoroughly enjoyed). I got two scrambled eggs with bacon. I also enjoyed my meal. This is a small restaurant, that seems to have been around for decades. We had an EXCELLENT waitress! She was very attentive, friendly, courteous and professional. I go here about twice a month (I'd go every week if I lived closer) and have never had a meal here that wasn't super delicious. The staff is always very nice and no matter whether the place is packed or deserted, the food is always cooked perfectly. There was a hair ball in my salad, The old worker was yelling at another worker... through a towel at her and all the other workers were bullying her and the poor girl who looked 19 wasn't defending herself just took it. and my chicken was so raw It wasn't even editable. Not to mention I heard them tell a worker to wash her hands in bleach (being dead serious) The workers are just so rude and told me to kick rocks because I asked for more coffee, There was a fly in my mashed potatoes and when I said something they told me it wouldn't kill me It took 2 hours for my food to come because they were busy singing and dancing. Stopped in for lunch, mid-week with a friend, first time here. Wait staff was very friendly and nice. The menu has lots of choices. The portions however were on the small side for the price and the quality was just ok. I also didn't care for the nickel and dime-ing of things such as being charged an extra dollar just to use a credit card. The interior of the restaurant is a bit dated. The restaurant was at least half full and a majority of their patrons looked to be in their 60's or older. Nothing wrong with that, it's just this restaurant definitely attracts an older generation of regulars. For the money though there are much better options in this area. read more

Definitely a little hole in the wall for some but this place is a staple in old Hilliard, they have all the old time pictures of Hilliard up and they even had a sports team photo from the year I was born. Just happened to stumble across this place while in Hillard, stopped here because they had outdoor seating, however there were no seats outside so we went inside. First glance it is your stereotypical family diner. Kind of dark, not very fancy, old booths along the wall etc. But we see a bar at the other end, so my husband and I being people who would rather sit at a bar sat there. Thinking it was more like a counter than a bar, I was surprised to see it was actually a bar, draft beer, bottled beer, liquor wine etc. I found that odd for this type of restaurant but also pretty cool, so we had a beer! I ordered the Turkey Ruben and my husband got the Turkey Club, I must say the sandwiches were really good. They were just sandwiches and did not come with sides unless you paid for them, but the sandwich itself was very tasty. This is not a five star restaurant, so don't go here expecting Michelin star dining, but for a family diner that serves alcohol, I'd say pretty darn good. Add in the friendly staff and we will be back next time we are in the Hilliard area. read more

Got some carryout from Abner's this weekend. Though we'd eaten here before, it had been a number of years (no particular reason) and we had never had a To Go order before. One of us got a BLT sandwich with a fruit dish side, which was proclaimed to be a pretty good BLT, though should have been ordered with the bread un-toasted (our fault). The fruit was a nice portion of grapes, pineapple, and honeydew, sweet and fresh. Another ordered 2 eggs over easy with corned beef hash, fried potatoes, and rye toast. All were described as delicious, though the portions were described as somewhat skimpy. Prices are relatively inexpensive, perhaps an adjustment upward with a corresponding increase in portion size is in order? The last order was the only problem child. The online ordering system used through the Abner's website did not work properly when inputting the requested items for the "create your own" omelet. Unbeknownst to us, it was thus submitted as a "plain" omelet (who the heck eats THAT?! blech!) Thanks to HB's good eyeballing of the email confirmation, the problem was discovered and the restaurant was called and given the correct omelet items manually. Unfortunately when the omelet order arrived home, the side order of fried potatoes that appeared to make it through the online order system intact didn't make it into the container. The English muffin was also cold and unbuttered/unmargarined. The omelet itself was very good, however. Cheese in every bite, which is pretty rare when it comes to omelets, and it was fluffy and perfectly cooked. So 2 out of 3 ain't bad, to quote Meatloaf (the singer, not the menu item), but I wouldn't trust their online ordering system again, nor pick up any carryout orders without completely vetting every container to ensure everything was received. It's a nice enough little diner, atmosphere-wise, so if you have the time and inclination during these COVID times to eat-in, that might be your best bet. read more

This place is awesome for casual breakfast. Place is always packed but has indoor and outdoor seating. I had the breakfast burrito and it was way.... to big. WAY too big. Coffee was hot and yummy, place was clean, staff was pleasant and prompt. They have a backdoor with back of restaurant parking which comes in handy when downtown is packed and there is no street parking. We always have a great meal, and even though its always packed we have never had to wait . We have been coming here for 10 years and know everytime we will be full with a great meal at an awesome price. Always a go to place for us. read more

Small diner atmosphere, booths, old school waitresses, every day specials, affordable prices, plethora of food options from traditional to old school, on top of outdoor seating when the weather is nice. I was originally hesitant about visiting due to the reviews but this was my 4th visit since last summer and I have been impressed each time. Never left disappointed. I understand people have high expectations for a diner to meet the same criteria as a 5 star restaurant but this is a diner and thats what you get. On our last visit on friday morning, I took my daughter for "brunch". We live 1 hour outside of Columbus but had a doctors visit in Dublin our old stomping grounds and wanted to swing by here afterwards since breakfast is served all day. The menu has a TON OF OPTIONS, if you don't see it, you can sometimes put special request in. I saw many options for many diets as long as you have the understanding its a diner and not your personal chef but to say the least, they are flexible to work with you. Abners wasn't very busy at 11am so we were greeted in a timely fashion by both Robin and Robin. Beverages were brought right away. It took us longer to decide than it did for anything else. My daughter originally went in wanting chicken wings (don't ask me Im not sure about chicken wings for brunch but thats what she wanted as she has had them here before and LOVED them lol) server checked with the cook but they had't started to smoke wings for the day yet - bummer, so she went with the cheeseburger. I on the other hand stuck with breakfast. I ordered the eggless wonder, biscuit with side of sausage gravy. Both meals arrived piping hot at the same time. My daughter commented her burger was great, we were told they have a grill top in the back so it makes a difference, I agree, it totally does. The eggless wonder was a huge portion, lots of cheese and because Im weird with some foods, I put my sausage gravy on top of it and ate it like that. We were in and out within 30-40min. Staff was friendly and hospitable. Prices are very reasonable. Definitely a staple in Hilliard among the chains. I love supporting the mom and pops diners. We have gone to Abners in the past with no issues and the food was good. Went there this morning and got seated outside. A nice young lady took our drink order and they were provided quickly. We my wife, daughter and I saw another family come in and they got their drinks another waitress took their food order. When they got their food we asked the Lady who took our drink order if we could get someone to take our order. She said sure I'll tell your waitress. We waited another 10 minutes and no one came. We then asked another waitress and she said she would check. Waited 2 more minutes and no one came. Left a 10$ bill on the table and road our bikes down to star liner diner and got immediate service. We have eaten at Abner's in the past and the food and service was fine. The only complaint prior to this issue is that some of the older waitresses seemed a little arrogant and rude. read more
