I used to live in the neighborhood, but I have not been here for 20 or 30 years. It's a little different, but it's the same. It's a neighborhood hang out. It's getting towards the edge of German Village. The sauerkraut balls have been famous forever. Their menu otherwise has changed over the years. They have a Philly steak place in the kitchen, and so some of the menu is geared towards that. But there is plenty of other bar food. I got the balls, of course. They seem smaller thanI remember, but again it's been decades. And they were still excellent. They are essentially what I remember. Perfect combination of textures and flavors, served hot. They brought a collection of sauces to the table, but you don't really need any. So so good. I got wings too, because they looked good. They were out of one of the sauces I wanted, because they make the sauces from scratch. And the one I wanted, had raspberries in it and it's not raspberry season. I went with spicy peach, not very spicy,but very flavorful. Very peachy. The wings were meaty, juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. 6 of them and 6 kraut balls was plenty for me for lunch. Service was excellent. Prices are pretty darn good. The place was cozy. It was not at all busy at two on a weekday afternoon. It gets busy at peak, of course. It's about time Gwen. I've been meeting to check out Hey Hey for a looooong time, like before Yelp was born long time. Long and skinny space just how any well-respected neighborhood bar and grill should be. I'm a huge fan of German Village, Meriam Village, Hungarian Village areas, as you'll easily find a row of houses on a street (busy and not) with local independent shops and eateries spattered within that same row. Upscale is not really in HHBG's vocab; not because it's scummy or anything, atmosphere just is what it is, take it or leave it. My friend has a chili cook-off here every year for her Lions Club fundraiser, so I was glad to come, watch the OSU/MSU football game, and support their cause. Two ladies manning the bar, I just walked up and waited for service, which was fast and efficient. There's more seating in the big back open room with a projector screen showing the game. Somewhat of a big bummer that the sound was not working, and it took way too long for staff to come and take a look at it - even after bringing it up to the bar staff several times. And, to add to the fact, there's only three medium size TV above the bar, not exactly great for viewing multiple games simultaneously. read more

Hey! HEY! You ought to check out this dive bar located in Merion Village. It has lots of character. They sometimes will have food but not often. If they do have food, it's usually the sauerkraut balls. It's a German food though, which is strange because this is an Irish pub. Of course the bar is located close to German Village. It kind of blends these countries. The exterior and interior certainly look Irish. It has lots of green. There's shamrocks on the windows. It has all kinds of Irish whiskey, even Bushmills. This is good for St. Patrick's Day withdrawal. I had the distant third of Irish whiskey with ginger ale. It's $5 for a glass. This is the same price as the better Irish whiskeys. Get those instead. The only food they had on the menu is the sauerkraut balls, which features pork. It doesn't have the menu always available. It also has a popular yak burger. I highly recommend the MINI BEER, which is a sweet and fun shot to drink. It's made with the Spanish Liquor 43 with a bit of heavy cream on top to imitate beer foam. SAUERKRAUT BALLS classic or jalapeno are a pass, but would be okay for general bar food. GERMAN POTATO SALAD, a bacon-y addition to the menu is a nice side item. They have great music. Went here recently to see the switchback band with a big group. Even though I was quite tired before heading out, I enjoyed myself --- the band and the atmosphere was great. They've made some renovations to the restaurant do that it doesn't look as dark as before. As a result though they haven't been serving food except for the sauerkraut balls, which are really good. They have some great beers on tap here as well as a full bar. It's been a while since I've had dinner here. I recall it to be quite average. What a cute little n(Hey!)borhood bar! I met some friends who just moved to Merion Village here for dinner and drinks. We started with beers and mixed drinks (my vodka/soda could have been a little stronger TBH) and their "famous" Jalapeno sauerkraut balls. They came with horseradish and honey mustard sauce and were little gems of delightfulness to whet our appetite. The menu is pretty simple. One side was regular menu options printed out and the reverse was handwritten specials. When in doubt, always get the specials. I had the reuben which was a greasy morsel of yummy. Very good with thick slices of corned beef--got me into the St. Patty's mood really. Service was great considering there were only 2 guys tending to the bar and the front end of the establishment which was pretty full. A very eclectic and inviting place. We hung out with the locals and regulars for a few hours while catching up. Watched people playing darts and were invited back for live music. I'd def be game to meet up there again for casual fare and drinks. read more

Debated between 2 or 3 stars, but since I'm reviewing food, I'm sticking with 2. I get it, this is a great neighborhood bar: cheap drinks, low key vibe and friendly bartenders. But, this is not a place for dinner. We ordered the yak burger and the buffalo chicken biscuit. The burger was double stacked (cool) on a nice tasty bun (cool) with two paper thin yak patties (not cool) drowned in mayo (not cool) and served with a side of 6 vinegar soaked potato wedges (not cool). And by paper thin patties, I mean that if you were to combine those two patties, it would still be half a regular burger patty. The buffalo chicken biscuit was pretty well put together except the fried chicken was dunked in an oil well and shot by a shrink ray which turned it into a 3 inch sandwich - no fries. I just want to express the experience I had with the owner, not as a guest, but as someone who works for a scooter company, and just doing my job. There is a drop lock in front of this bar, so I unloaded the 3 that are supposed to be placed there, and the wretched old woman comes out and tells me I need to move them elsewhere, because she doesn't want them there. I tried to explain that I have no control over it and I'm just doing my job, so she said, I'll just throw them in the dumpster. I would think that as old as she is, and having employees, she'd respect the fact that I'm doing what I'm supposed to do, instead of acting like a toddler throwing a temper tantrum. I td her she should contact my company and see if they can move the drop location, that wasn't good enough for her, she demanded I move them. Hey Hey is a shotgun style bar in an older building sitting just inside Merion Village on the southern border with German Village. I'd heard good things about the place for a few years, and seen their booth at Octoberfest so I knew they served some German food too, but due to its southerly location, I'd never stopped in. That changed some months ago when I was waiting for a friend who lived a few doors down to get ready. I told her I'd just chill and have a drink at Hey Hey because I'd been meaning to check it out anyway. The bartender began talking to me immediately on account of having never seen me before. I was carded for the same reason, which didn't bother me at all. Once establishing that I was indeed of age and a real customer, the bartender began a line of inquiry into what brought me to the place. He's apparently been tending the bar here a long time. He said he knew everyone in the neighborhood, and even ended up knowing my friend's roommate, who owns the house in question. So it would be fair to say this is a neighborhood bar. This has been some months back now, but I believe I recalled at least one pool table at the far end of the bar. The bar itself is immediately to the left when you walk in, and is an L-shaped number running toward the back. There were a few TVs, tuned to the news as opposed to sportscenter. I ordered a Jameson on the rocks, which was average priced, because I like to nurture my beer and didn't think I'd have enough time to sit and enjoy it properly. The other patrons were friendly too, a few exchanged niceties with me while I sat. All in all, this is a decent bar that I might frequent regularly if I lived in the vicinity. The bartender was probably the highlight, and if you live in the area and haven't gone, you should give it a try. read more

i love you Hey Hey bar. Untill this summer I lived a halfa block from the St. James Tavern for 4 years (me and the Mrs.'s pic is on the wall as proof of my constant patronage there). After we moved to German Village there was a gaping hole in the "cool bar I can walk to in any weather" quadrant of my life. Enter the Hey Hey bar. It's kinda like the James but bigger, and thursdays at the Hey Hey put St. James to shame. 2 words, BLUES JAM. We stumbled upon this blues jam on accident a few months ago, and now go back whenever we can get away from the 1 year old for an hour or two on a thurs. The jam only lasts from 9 - midnight, but usually rocks. **side anecdote** One thurs there was no blues jam on account of Jerry Lee Lewis' son being there with his band the Super Annoyings. The Mrs and I distanced ourselves as far as we good from the ruckus but band's set was soon over and Lewis Jr must've knew we wanted no part of his ruckus cause he came right up to where we were minding our own business just to annoy the hell out of us. I'm not really sure where these reviews are coming from...maybe I was at the wrong place!? And choosing stars was very difficult, so I will split my review. Hey Hey - as a bar: 1 star This bar had nothing to write home about on tap (it is not a good day when Stella is as good as the drafts get), though had an OK selection of bottled brews. The bar was oddly lit and half of it looked like a storage unit for the anyone to throw anything (really...anything! I think I saw beer boxes, costumes, signs, etc.). I went to the bathroom one time, which took me a long time to find in the dark and it is in the very back (where no customers are sitting and you wonder if you are in the same place). The bathroom had no toilet paper and the toilet was broken. I don't mean clogged, I mean the seat literally was cracked in half and the toilet was on a slant. I held the rest of my pee until I got home. Hey Hey - service: 5 stars (6 if I could!) The bartenders at this bar clearly had many regulars and knew a lot about them! They greeted their regulars, asked questions, and seemed to be having a great time. Sometimes these bartenders tend to neglect non-regular customers; but not at the Hey Hey! Everyone, I beleive, seemed to get the same warm and prompt service. Plus, when my fiance and I decided we probably should cab it home, the bartender not only called a cab for us, but came to our table and let us know when the cab was there. That is service unlike I have ever ever had. Hey Hey, you swept me off my feet. Hey Hey, the food's here! After a long wait, the kitchen is now open. I believe I heard the chef was poached from TAT, and he and his wife definitely know their way around the completely revamped kitchen. The "temporary" menu features traditional favorites like burgers and wings (with four or five diverse sauce choices) but there are also fried chicken livers, deep fried deviled eggs and goulash. I had the goulash and I have to say that the broth flavor was intricate and delicious. The thick noodles were al dente and stood out from the stew. My wife had the chicken livers and they were also a fine pairing with my usual Lone Star. Service did not miss a beat with the addition of a food menu. The dishes and place mats look like they came straight from a hipster's garage sale, which is very endearing. Great place to grab a bite after work or for a nice friendly dinner. read more

The draft selection left a lot to be desired, and those weren't on special any way. This is a fun neighborhood bar in Merion Village. It's in a funky older building that lends it almost as much character as the regulars do. I've been several times for the Swoop! Food Truck kitchen takeover (Thursday through Saturday evenings) and really enjoyed the food, drink, and atmosphere.
