A pitiful dump. And there's NO stage (per the last reviewer), I don't know HOW he messed that one up. Unless he was thinking he was somewhere else completely (a common occurrence in this place, I'd bet). It's the kind of place that'll have you WISHING you were somewhere else, that's fer sure. On the rare occasions that this hole in the wall has 'live' music, they just push the 2 crappy pool tables into the corner and let the band set up against the front glass in the next (& adjoining) room. And as far as MUSIC goes, be it by the barely competent bands of drunken hacks, or the juke box, with it's crappy selection of moldy oldies from yesteryear, you'll be hearing Mustang Sally, Free Bird & Smoke on the Water: over & over & over (& over) again. It's gets ALL the pinheads, rummies & grandma/tomboys up and bouncing off each other, like slowed down, lobotomized, human pinballs. I've been a few times now, over the last 10 years in this 'hood. Hey, it's right up the street from the house my wife & I bought here in Clintonville. It's a convenient place for me to meet people (I'm an artist) & it serves booze legally (or so I've been told). But Rafters is primarily a full-on shit hole: make NO mistake. We're not talking a 'charming' little dump, either, like Dick's Den, where they play Coltrane & serve pasta. No, this place is a human garbage pit. If there's ever any food left out, I sure as hell wouldn't eat any of it. I know for a fact they don't have the legal certificates/licenses required to serve food in this county (Franklin). I believe at least one 'regular' on any given night is using his car on the back lot as his home address. One or two certainly smell like they've been sleeping in their cars the last few months. It's no secret in the neighborhood that there is (or until very recently there used to be) a small homeless encampment out behind Rafters & south, down by the railroad tracks & the rental/storage place. And Rafters is where they go drink, come the 1st of the month, when the checks arrive & they're all flush with paper spendin'/drinkin' money. But enough of my social commentary (for which, BTW, I entirely blame the gov't's lack of action); back to the bar.
There are fruit flies actively buzzing around the bottles behind the bar - so, as to their mixed drinks menu; I wouldn't even go there. Besides, no one else ever does; so why upset the apple cart? There's no draft beer (I know: a BAR with no draft beer! WTF!?): they only have it in bottles, which, considering the lack of impulse control this place is infamous for, is an insane choice for a serving container. Might as well hand out fragmentary grenades with every drink order & just let 'em all "have at it". The staff pretty much ignores everyone: their sullen attitudes perfected over years & years of practice in this black hole of holes. And they WILL short change you, at every opportunity. Keep your eyes on your money AND your wallets/purses, would be my advice. Except for the Sacred 7 Local Yokels, who seem to never leave (don't these people have homes or jobs?) & get ALL the wait staff's attention/drinks/correct change/etc., you will be ignored, ripped off, over charged & offended. I was there a few weeks back when a really drunk 50-something woman tried to start a full blown fistfight with me, out of no where, because it was Thursday. I think. She didn't make a lot of sense. I had said NOTHING to her, I was just close enough to her that when she decided to "go off" on someone, that someone was 'ME'! The staff (the OWNER was 10 feet away!) made NO attempt to quiet this woman down, or diffuse the situation. They even continued to bring her drinks (a-fakking-mazing!) during her misplaced 3 minute tirade! Had it not been for her 2 big-boned man-hating 'lady friends' finally convincing her to end her diatribe, she ran a very real risk that afternoon of me finally saying "Fakk it!" to the next 20 years of my life, throwing my arms up & pulling out my li'l thumper (I go NO where unarmed these days). Ms Cranky-Pants surely could not have possibly known how close I was to putting a cap in her ass. Fer real. I ain't playin' - but the idjits, drunks, dimwits & surly staff at Rafters certainly are. All the live-long day (there's stinking drunks at their door every morning, waiting for them to open). At Rafters, you can be sure the regulars will step on your LAST nerve, the staff will ignore & then short change you at every opportunity, and you'll be charged FAR more for their luke warm packaged liquor than what it costs retail at Savor, the carry out 3 doors up. Be forewarned: you're literally paying them for the abuse. Oh, and if I could give negative stars to a place like THIS human turd bucket, I most certainly would. Will I go back? Sure. I love it there. But strictly for the shock value ("You come HERE to drink?!") - it's THAT bad. read more
