Yesterday was my first time visiting India Oak Grill. It is a small building with a few additional tables on the patio. It has a dive bar feel. My friend and I were seated at a table and the bartender provided great service throughout the visit. They have a small but good variety of draft beer. I opted for a Kona Big Wave. The food menu is a mix of sandwiches, burgers and other pub fare. I ordered a Club Sub. The food arrived quickly. The sub was packed with ingredients, including turkey and ham. The bun was perfectly toasted. It was a lot of food. I will definitely return to try some of the other menu options at India Oak Grill. read more

We stopped in after church. Originally we planned on going to Smashburger on High street, but changed our minds since downtown was packed due to the Arnold Fitness Classic. So we headed north towards Clintonville and decided to go with a classic spot, The Oak. We barely sat down before the bartender was already helping us. We started off with drnks of course. I got an Angry Orchard and my man got a Yuengling, bottles not draft. As the burgers do not come with fries we got the signature Buffalo Chicken Dip with chips for our appetizer/carbohydrate. The dip was spicy but not too hot to handle. My man got the Double Cheeseburger which came with two slices of American cheese, pickles, onions, tomatoes and lettuce. I got the Mushroom Swiss Burger which came with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles and garlic aioli. I stopped in for late lunch and tried to listen to a conference call. LOL they cranked up the Bob Seager so that wasn't optimal. Not my call as everyone else in the joint was having first beers and cocktails to kick off a football weekend in Columbus. Vibe is dive bar but clean. Service is quick. We embarked on a Tuesday adventure because I prefer to avoid crowded places because I am immunodeficient. I had known about India Oak for a long time, so it felt like the perfect opportunity to explore more neighborhood spots. I love dive and neighborhood eateries, and this one was just right. We enjoyed a fantastic Italian sub sandwich and a meatball sub with just the right amount of tomato sauce. One of the highlights was the freshly baked Italian bread they take pride in using. The in-house-made chili was also excellent, served in a savory, meaty tomato sauce rich with just the right amount of large red kidney beans. You can also add onion and cheese on top if you like. The kitchen at India Oak is small, accommodating only one or two people at a time. However, this limitation doesn't stop them from serving fresh, made-to-order dishes such as burgers, grilled cheese, and soups. Came here to try the Italian sub after seeing it was recommended as one of the best in the city on the Columbus foodies group. I was not disappointed. The sandwich was huge and a nicely put together Italian. We also got two coney dogs, the coney sauce reminded me of sloppy joes, which surprisingly I really liked. Parking is kind of tough as there is no dedicated parking lot so coming for lunch with a work van was a little difficult. Service was friendly and quick. Super cute and friendly bar and restaurant. The staff there are always friendly even when they're busy. Greet you when you walk in and try to get you drink as fast as they can even when they're busy. I returned. 10 years later. We had a fun lunch UYE after we moved 2 tables in the back together. I had Tito & Cran for a cheap $5. My turkey sub was hot and with crusty bread. I had a side of coleslaw. It is extra, because the subs are not accompanied with anything else. I will def. come back again sooner than 10 years. Came for the "best Italian sub in the city" and was not disappointed. The best? I don't know ... further research will be required. But good? Absolutely. The sub was toasted well, had quality tasting ingredients, and came out FAST. I think my only sadness was the pasta salad, it was good but it was a teeny tiny portion for the cost. Met several Yelpers here for lunch on a weekday. Not crazy busy, but I bet it gets nuts on weekends. Smallish, divey, movie posters, etc., on the walls. It's a bar that used to be a carwash, with a bar-food menu: burgers, subs, fried bologna, etc. I got the chili, a solid version, thick and meaty with beans and a touch of heat. Came with plenty of oyster crackers. Then I went with a sub because everyone said they're good; why not have the Louie 2, a basic Italian sub plus capicola and spicy sausage? The sausage is not really spicy, and it's ground, so some fell off but it's surprisingly not too messy in general. Good bread, good toppings, overstuffed (I bet the normal one has enough meat to satisfy, but the sausage does add some oomph.) So big I took half home (if I'd skipped the chili I could have finished it, but would have been stuffed.) Reasonable prices, good service considering it seems like there was only one person there for about 20 patrons total at tables and the bar. It's not fancy, but it's good. Parking is tight, and you can't park in the lot next door (the vet) till the evening. They have bands on the weekend, but I can't imagine how- it's tight enough on a not too busy weekday. read more

This place has long been praised by foodies for their fine subs. I tried the meatball sub and now I know what all the hub bub is about. Wow! I'm a convert! I liked that it was not dripping with sauce but had just right sauce amount that it added to the overall taste and kept it together. The sub did not come with any sides. Great neighborhood bar with a kickin' bar food menu. I went recently on a random Wednesday and had me some soup and the Italian sub (their specialty!) The soup was Beef Bourgogne and absolutely delicious (and filling!) I ate about half the sub and saved it for later. They do not have a fryer here so bar bites are assembled, grilled or baked. Deep selection of craft brews at $5/6 price point. Full bar of course as well. Nice little spot to sit and eat and enjoy the Clintonville scene. read more

Boyfriend and I have seen a lot of people raving about the Italian Sub here. Decided to try them for the first time. The entrance is through the patio of people smoking. We're seated, and we decide on what to get. Our beers are brought over, and they're warm. We said something to someone who worked there, and he said he would immediately check his walk-in. Have been meaning to go to this place (Indian Oak Grill) forever and always found a reason not to go. Well finally decided to go. After sitting down I was greeted by Nick the bartender. Decided to order the Chili and the Italian Sub. The chili had a nice blend of beans, hamburger, tomatoes, onions, peppers and spices. It had just a slight kick to it which was just right. No wonder why it is listed as one of the best in town. On to the sub sandwich. It has hard salami, hot ham, provolone cheese, lettuce, onion, tomatoes, banana peppers and Italian dressing on I believe an Auddino's bun that seemed to been pressed by a Panini Press to heat it up and to melt the cheese. Rumor has it India Oak Grill has the best Italian sub in Cbus... and I'm here to say that it's highly likely! We have tried a couple different subs from India Oak, but I really truly do love their Italian. It's big and the bread is really tasty. It does come drenched in Italian dressing which may be great if you're eating in, but less than ideal for takeaway orders because the bottom bread gets a lil soggy. Note to self: I need to ask if they can put dressing on the side to avoid soggy bread! Other than zero masking in sight and risking walking through smokers out front, I think it's a super solid choice for a very tasty sub! Awesome local neighborhood bar and one of the best Italian subs in town! They have a surprisingly diverse draft menu and tons of cans/bottles. Food is pretty affordable and it's a comfortable place to sit around and talk. They have live music but I've never been for a show. Parking is pretty questionable, so I would plan on street parking. read more

The restaurant is much bigger than it looks from the outside! The only problem is that there is very little parking available! Shuttered from the sun it's full of creatures, cacophony, and culture gone there in Clintonville just before the central tracks that cuts Columbus on the street whose name it bears. But now such a nondescript place is distinct in a time of mass extinction and is a representation of old gritty ColumbusI once knew and loved. I go here in place of Mamas Pasta and Brew whose decade old shack has finally surrendered to the bulldozers and the nothingness dust of the University District. Blink and you'll miss it. It's in an unnoticeable building with an obscure glass panel circa 1970s, looking much like an old Dr's office. The short side faces the street, while a very small parking lot runs the long side. No see-through windows. Just a bare thrills, smoker patio is all the indicates a bar and grill is there. A long L-shape bar and tables, TVs, music. Live music must had played here once upon a time; there's a stage that now hold extra seating, Buckeye swag, Americana bling, and a 8x10 poster of James Dean in trench coat walking in the rain ( A fav. Of mine.) They make some nice bar grub subs. I had a club--fresh cut bread is the exclamation point on this otherwise standard version of a standard dive bar dish. Where do they get the bread? It has to be freshly made and not from a bag. Just fantastic. Beer selection is better than most dive, especially the one in the Northwest who seem to think it is still 1994. ( Look I miss the feel of old Columbus but I like the variations of indies, crafts, and micros we have today; Traditions only having Bud on tape is cray-cray.) Yet they don't have the offerings that Mamas prided themselves on. Service is on point, friendly, and blue collar. There was some hullabaloo about who was serving my first beer--I ordered one but it took the slow boat from China and another server inquired and things got a bit dramatic for a second. But I actually didn't care being slow down, chill-out, dive time with me doing the whole waiting for Godot schtick with Mike G ( joking) so I don't have twenty burrs up my cavity about it. This is a no frills dive with dark lighting, old booths, and the smell of cheap cigarettes wafting through the air. If this sounds off-putting, just keep reading. Our server was incredibly nice and more attentive than most. The other customers, many of whom seemed to be regulars, were friendly. The menu was more limited than I expected- they don't even make French fries. This turned out to be a good thing, because I got to try some delicious potato salad instead. The subs are HUGE! Their pulled pork with slaw special was out of this world, and it was $7 and some change before tip. I'd love to go back and try a drink soon. It comes with spicy hummus, pita slices, and vegetables. The bar gets crowded for live shows on weekends. It gets harder finding a parking spot and it's already limited. I go to India Oak for lunch and I go pretty often at that. This time I met up with Anna H. (who, if you haven't met her is an A+ person to get to know). She ended up getting a veggie sub and I took advantage of their Taco Tuesdays. This is where you ask...."What are Taco Tuesdays?" To answer your question....it's their weekly lunch special. Every Tuesday from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm they have seasoned beef, lettuce, fresh tomato, fresh onion, cheddar cheese, sour cream, hot sauce and hard taco shells on the prep table. You build your own, eat as many as you like and pay. It's on the honor system...all for $1 each. (Update 7/1/17 - tacos are now $1.50 each). I had two tacos and a "Batch 19" Pre-Prohibition style beer and even after my contribution to the State Of Ohio (taxes) it still only cost me $5.65. It's a deal. read more

Best Italian sub I've had since I used to make my own when working during my high school years in the late 80's (at Dominic's Pizza, the best pizza place ever in Centerburg with Momma Iris and Donnie Centofanti) So when you find a place that helps stir up the best memories from growing up you gotta keep going back! :) and India Oak Grill definitely delivers that by offering great dive bar comfort food with a super friendly neighborhood joint atmosphere! Consistent quality every time (& we've ordered to go and/or ate in for at least the past 18-20 years when visiting my mom & stepdad in Clintonville) Perfect amount of quality meats & cheese to bun ratio and the bun is always soft but yet perfectly toasted with just the right amount of bits of burnt edges of cheese stuck on the foil wrapper which is to be carefully peeled and eaten as you unwrap the sub!
