Came in for a quick cocktail with a girlfriend and seen they had a nice wine special and had a couple while catching up. I've tried the mac and cheese bites before and they were pretty good and came out hot. This place can get pretty packed on the weekends from 8-11 but I enjoy meeting all the different people here and the bartenders are usually nice and prompt. I don't ever remember music playing but it can get pretty loud in here from all the bodies and chatter. read more

High Beck Tavern - Dive Bars Near Me - Columbus, Ohio

Dive bar in German village great atmosphere fun place recommended to go everywhere vvbvv

The High Beck Tavern is a real neighborhood dive bar. It reminds me of the places in the OSU campus area before gentrification. As I have said, we enjoy exploring dive bars, and visiting the High Beck is always popular. The pizza is delicious, and you can build your own. The BBQ is super, but not out of this world. The BBQ includes both brisket and pulled pork. The BBQ is not cooked with a great deal of seasoning, but there are several sauces for you to try. There are subs, burgers, and chili dogs. We love the BBQ and pizza, which is mostly what we go for. The High Beck is an actual dive establishment. Ordering is done at the bar. The prices are low, and the beer is cold. The High Beck is ideal if you are going out with a crew. Everyone will find something to munch on, and no one will mind if you become a little rowdy. Parking is at meters along High Street. So, if you become bored with the Short North, make a trip down High Street with your pals to the High Beck in German Village. read more

My friend was in town visiting from Chicago and he's a big fan of German Village. Me and a few of my friends gathered here for drinks and grab some apps. This place is super dive-y, which is exactly what we were looking for. They also have a pool table and a ping pong table in back which was super nice - we love when bars have activities! Me and my boyfriend played a few round before we ordered food. We ordered the potato skins and they were sooo good, when is the last name y'all had potato skins? I feel like so many places got rid of them but would definitely comeback for ping pong and potato skins. read more

High Beck Tavern - Potato Skins - Dive Bars Near Me - Columbus, Ohio

I went religiously to High Beck Tavern for lunch in the mid 2000's. Sadly some time in late 2010 I got a new job that didn't allow me to do lunches out like I use to. I have stopped by a few times here and there for a drink at the bar. I have always felt fondly about this hole in the wall. It is rightly name High Beck, because it is on the corner of High Street and Beck Street, in German Village. You can't miss the big blue awning out front that covers the entrance and the patio. Back in the day when I went for lunches, I loved their food and the affordable prices. The beers were always cold and they were not overpriced either, even though you are steps away from downtown. I was feeling nostalgic on a rainy Friday and I thought, why not stop in and have lunch for old times sake at High Beck. We entered the bar and we were the only ones in the entire place except for the employees. I ordered my usual, a beer and an Italian sub with fries. The place had not changed at all. No remodel, or freshening up of the place had occurred since I was last regularly visiting. A sense of familiarity rolled over me. I love that High Beck does not try to be something it isn't, it is your typical hole in the wall. They don't serve up any BS, just a good, cold, well priced beverage and a place to sit back and possibly forget the day or your troubles for a moment. The food came out, and though I gave High Beck 4 stars for this review now, please know it is not due to the food. The potato skins ($7) are the kind that are frozen in a big plastic bag, and then pulled out and fried up. They are tasteless. How does cheese and bacon not have any taste. Please just take my order and do not even order them. Save yourself the $7 and buy another 2 beers instead. My Italian sub was also disappointing. It definitely was not delicious like I remember back in the day. I was disappointed again that the meat was not heated. It was cold. The sub bun was maybe toasted on the grill for 2 seconds, not long enough for me. And the Italian dressing they used was Wish Bone. Not good at all. The fries were fine, it is hard to get fries wrong. After saying that I am certain you are wondering how I still gave them 4 stars. Well, my hope for you is that you stop by High Beck for the hole in the wall feel and a cold adult beverage. And then when you get hungry you move on to another establishment. It is worth a stop in for a drink, no doubt. read more

Dive bar in Columbus Ohio. We were there overnight and stop in just for a quick meal. However we never saw anyone working. We sit down and looking around, no one behind bar or walking around. We left after sitting there for 30 mins read more

Nice rustic local dive bar. Really nice set up. The bartender could've done a little bit of a better job. He was a little over-the-top with acting like I was gonna walk out without paying before I even ordered. Do you have a credit card to put on hold. Ordered a pizza to go and a pizza to dine in. Got both of them to go lol. read more

High Beck Tavern has been there forever. It looks pretty used up. This is one of the divier bars in uppity German Village. A lot of good beers on tap or bottles. The food has typical bar stuff but some is a bit healthier. Getting here is kind of a pain in the ass. It's located south of downtown and you need to find street parking. The bar is easy to find, because the clue is in it's name. It's at Beck and High. There's a big blue canopy over the entrance that you can't miss. Inside it certainly looks like a dive bar. The bathrooms are located downstairs, and you may want to hold your breath before heading there. It stinks in the men's room. There's a big trough style urinal. Beer here is pretty good. There's a wide selection of the local breweries on tap. I had the Land Grant 1862 Ale. It's about $5 for a pint. There's a hell of a lot of liquor bottles scattered along the wall. As for the food, it was better than expected. The menu includes things like wings but there's some healthier options though. I had the hummus plate. It's about $8 for a pretty big portion. This comes with pita triangles and vegetables. Beck Street is a tight residential street with some parking spots if you're lucky. Outside the bar on High Street there's parking meters. There's some free spaces further along High Street. read more

High Beck is your classic neighborhood bar, complete with dart boards, Christmas lights hung year round, and a big huge bar right in the middle where everything is centered around. They have your typical beer offerings, nothing too over the top here (Aka no sour beers for me). But, they have a full bar of liquor to whip up whatever you're wanting! We got their pizza and potato skins and they were super good! Food came relatively quickly considering how crowded it was in there!! If you're looking for a casual neighborhood (sort of) divey bar to hang with your friends at, High Beck is the spot for you read more

This bar is fun. There are games in the back like ping pong and pool. The drinks are cheap and the service is very friendly. I didn't try any of the food but there was a good selection beers on draft. Recommended for a casual fun evening. read more

A cozy, neighborhood friendly bar thay really cares about the surrounding community and its patrons. A likely spot to catch hip people kickin' it late night. They offer a great atmosphere, a pool table, a foosball table, and free bar bites including pizza and chili dogs on certain days/hours. The locals tell me that the owner Tommy is a sweetheart. A good friend of mine is a regular here and he is greeted with a corona with lime and a smile upon entry. It's definitely a vibe and has been a South High staple since long before I was old enough to have drinks there. Actually it has been around for 101 years, since before prohibition! read more

The people are absolutely great!!!! Met the owner (he seems to own a couple other places in the area too but I can't recall which right off the bat), the head bar tender and a really nice wait staff person. My man got the beef brisket and loved it. He did have to trim off some fat, but no big deal because the plate was piled high. I tried the BBQ sauce with my moz stix and loved it! You can catch faint whiffs of the wood burning for the smokers - it vaguely reminds me of roasting chestnuts...aahhhh. My basket was a little meh. I got the chix tenders, portobello fries and pretzella sticks. Methinks the menu stayed the same while the actual ingredients changed. Portobello fries were actually just fried button mushrooms. Pretzella sticks were actually just mozerella sticks. A true disappointment - I recall the delicious portobello strips that Fado's used to serve, true strips of big mushrooms fried golden. Portsmouth brewing company was sampling there as well this particular evening. Great brews!! I sampled the dark, the Red Bird and the Pilsner. Get the Pilsner while you can - there's a limited supply in bottles at the bar. read more

WE GOT ASSAULTED AT HIGHBECK AND STAFF DIDNT EVEN BLINK AN EYE! A team of thugs (men, but barely) punched me and my sister to the ground and staff remained behind the bar and complacent even after they flipped over a pingpong table on my sisters ankle almost breaking it, Afterwards no one came out to see if we were ok, nobody called the police even when the hood rats left. They were so apathetic and continued serving to the only handful of patrons that were in the bar at the time. They also even were yelling back at me when I told them I was so upset and they couldn't even provide a manager for me to speak to. ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!! read more

Definitely a dive bar. Definitely a good spot to grab a burger and a drink. On their menu it states after 3pm no table side service and to order at the bar. The bartender was so kind to take our food and drink order at our table but that was it for table service. The hamburger I ordered was really tasty and on an onion roll which was a unique surprise. The french fries were shoestring and were fried up perfectly but I think the salt tasted kind of funny. Maybe just me? The lack of table service was a little weird...no napkins, no silverware, empty ketchup bottles on multiple tables...kinda felt bad asking the busy bartender (only seemed to be one) for anything that we needed. read more

I adore dive bars and that's exactly what this is! Had a bit of time to kill before a nearby wedding so stopped in for couple drinks. 2 beers and a vodka for $7.00=awesome! Split a large pizza which was just ok but we all had a good time. Bathroom was down a steep set of stairs but was pretty clean. read more

Sunday rainy afternoons are great here at High Beck Tavern. They have friendly bartenders, food, drinks, a ping pong table, darts, and pool. There is plenty to do while relaxing with friends. I didn't get to try any of the food but the drinks were good. One interesting note, the restrooms are downstairs. When you walk out of the women's restroom someone wrote on the wall "you have a choice". This can be taken several ways but whichever way you decide to take it, it was definitely picture worthy! You do have a choice, and one choice can be to give High Beck a shot! read more

Fun and casual dive bar for drinks during happy hour! They have good food deals on Monday and Tuesday (free pizza is one of the days. I know, right?) but I have yet to go during either day. And honestly I haven't had the food yet. The staff is friendly and happy to strike up a conversation. Three Sheets has darts too, which is a huge plus for me when I'm having a couple beers. read more

Awesome dive bar to head to after work for a drink! Drink deals normally end at 7, but they had free coney dogs on the Tuesday I went!

I wish I could leave no stars but it wouldn't let me post without it. Do not go here. The most recent time I went I was roofied and have not been back since. The drinks were cheap at first and that's why I kept going back. But after my most recent experience I will never go back again. read more

I've been going to High Beck off and on for 5 years. There's a lot of good things about it! 1) The owner and bar tenders are great! Amazing even. It's almost as if they know what you need before you need it. 2) Ping Pong- for freeee! 3) decent food. 4) Moderately clean bathrooms. 5) strong drinks. 6) I met my boyfriend for the first time there! There's one thing that keeps High beck from the 5 star mark! Twice now, I have gone to High Beck for Happy Hour and it hasn't been too happy for me because of a RETIREMENT party over taking the majority of the bar. It makes for an awkward time of a bunch of people celebrating some old guy you don't know and then you and your friends trying to enjoy Friday night. I think it's pretty odd this has happened to me here more than once. On another note, if you are planning a retirement party....apparently High Beck is the place! read more

Classic German Village hole in the wall spot. Dim lighting with Christmas lights on the wall and a pool table in the back. The actually bar is huge, tons of places to sit. They have a huge beer, liquor AND WINE selection- woohoo. We order the smokehouse pizza with both the pulled pork and brisket -WOW! It was SO GOOD. It's a thick pizza but light and dough-y. I wish I could order this bad boy for delivery. Definitely a must if you're ravenous and find yourself at the corner of Beck and High. read more

I cannot believe I haven't written a review about the High Beck until now! I really enjoy dive bars... I like walking into a bar that hasn't changed in 15+ years. The bartenders are the same, the locals are pretty much the same and the art on the walls is..... well, exactly the same. They have darts, a pool table, ping pong and my favorite... photohunt. The bartenders are great... They have been around forever and pour pretty good drinks. Monday nights offer free pizza and I think Tuesdays are free hot dog nights.... The patio is great for people watching and relaxing on a nice evening or happy hour. The one issue I have with the High Beck... the bathrooms! I got locked in a stall in the ladies room on a Saturday afternoon about 4 years ago and I still haven't recovered from having to crawl under the door. I recommend the buddy system when venturing to the basement bathrooms at the High Beck.... or take your cell phone. All in all... The High Beck is a great local dive bar... the clientele is very diverse and rather friendly... @ Matthew M.... The lightning fast African guy is named NaNa and he has his own ping pong paddle. I watched him destroy everyone he played last weekend. read more

Good bar with reasonable HH prices. Decent array of beers on tap that can just about cover any desire. Free darts, ping pong, foosball. Reasonable Pool Table price plus a couple arcade games. Numerous tables inside that is size of a restaurant plus outdoor patio. Service - Bartenders seemed more annoyed that we were there. They appeared more interested in socializing with their usual crowd. Friends and I had a beer, played some games, and moved on during this recent trip. read more

Easily my favorite bar in the area. It's pretty basic. Kind of dingy. Unremarkable on the surface. But, it has a bar staff that seems to have mastered how to get lots of people their drinks quickly--which is hard to find in Columbus. There's always a lot of people here it seems, which just sort of makes you feel like you're in the right place. The dart "arena" is a great addition--when it is available, which is surprisingly often. I think what sets this apart as my favorite watering hole--and this is very petty, I realize--they have these hot peanuts that are fantastic. Not many places give you anything free anymore--no less something that is free and really tasty. When you order your drinks, just ask for some peanuts--you won't be disappointed. I'm judging this as a bar only--have only had the food once, it wasn't great, but I wasn't expecting much. read more

Stopped in for lunch one day. Nice little place. great artwork on the walls. I ordered the Reuben. I was very pleased with it. It had a good amount of beef on it, with just the right amount of kraut that wasnt overpowering. The cheese was melted perfectly and oozing out of the sides. It had a great flavor to it. I was very pleased and look forward to stopping in again for another. read more

Date night, boys night, girls night, business dinner....it doesn't matter. This is your place. You can't spell "class" without "High Beck". I highly recommend the Maui Special, Denise makes a mean one and if you're lucky, there might be some protein in it. If you take yourself so seriously that you see your Yelp reviews as a public service, this isn't your bar. If you're a regular guy and you want a home town bar you can party at with an eclectic crowd, High Beck is your spot. read more

Take this review with a grain of salt because I have been declared "VIP" status at this bar (VIPs get complimentary mixed nuts ADDED to their already delicious spicy peanuts). Let's start with the bartenders. Dave, Wayne, Tommy and Tod (could be Todd with two D's, I don't know for sure but feel like Tod is the best Tod/Todd and I'm not going to be persuaded SORRY) are perhaps the best four bartenders in all of Columbus. Do I prefer how some of the bartenders at Standard Hall or Pint House or Novaks or even Oddfellows (haha jk on Oddfellows ... NOT MY SCENE) look compared to the Four Horsemen at High Beck? Maybe, but as far as quality service goes? These four are the knees of the bees. It's just a damn friendly spot. Love going in solo on a weeknight, sitting down, checking my two phones for like three hours - responding to group chats, maybe a work email or two - and forgetting about all of life's troubles. I don't have too many troubles tbh. I live comfortably with zero responsibilities. The beer is ice cold. The TVs are always turned to games of importance (you'll never see them with NFL Network or some BS news program). I dig the clientele as well. A true potpurri of the trendy German Village and blue collar "South End." Love it. Every single person in that place has a story. Good dudes. Decent chicks. And the food? Solid. The chicken fingers are DELIGHTFUL. Big meaty portions. Not a BBQ place but the brisket ... I'm now doing that thing where you put all five fingers on your lips and then you blow a kiss to symbolize "YES VERY GOOD." Seriously though, love this place. It is awesome and I am so glad I live near it. You'll never have a bad time at this place. You may come in a bad mood, you may leave in a bad mood, but time spent at the High Beck will always make you feel better. read more

We've been to High Beck for their Bloody Mary bar on Saturday afternoons. Usually it's decent, but when we went on Saturday before St. Patty's Day they didn't have the bloody mary bar. Okay. Not a problem... Beer it is. But, the bartender wasn't the nicest person and was quite rude to our friends. I enjoy the ambiance of the bar. I love the various activities you can do: pool, ping pong, fooseball, darts, etc. The location, for us, is out of the way, so we are only there a few times a year. read more

Fun place but have issues with the weekend female bartenders. I dont know , maybe they dont like tips but they are pretty short with the customers and usually like to stand and talk to their friends at the other end of the bar instead of serving you. The reason I am giving it 3 stars is because of the gentleman that works there, i think he may be the owner. He periodically makes it better by coming down, telling a few jokes, then wandering off again to mess with the stereo. Good bar darts bartenders need to smile and be nice chabba. read more

High Beck Tavern gets a five-star review for many reasons. 1). They have an awesome staff who is very, very friendly. 2) They have really good food for a very reasonable price. High Beck Tavern - It's Tuesday free Chili dogs today - Dive Bars Near Me - Columbus, Ohio

We found ourselves here on a rainy Tuesday evening around 8pm, in the German Village area of Columbus, wanting something to eat and drink. We didn't want to walk far from our hotel on High Street. Is it a dive bar? Yes, but the lack of oak finishes and Tiffany lamps isn't an issue. Friendly staff and good service make the grade here. Todd (the Bartender) greeted us shortly after we walked in and sat down. In need of food, we looked through the menu; the patty melt and fries looked good. Todd informed us that chili dogs were free this evening (it was a Tuesday and on Tuesday "free chili dogs" is evidently The Rule). We ordered one patty melt w/ fries and two chili dogs, and were quite satisfied. The patty melt was nicely done; the fries were "skinny" and delicious. The chili dogs were "as described"; the requisite cheese, onions, relish and potato chips were available for the taking, being perched on the bar within easy reach. This is a comfortable, unassuming little place that we would recommend to anyone. read more

Ah no, another review that'll make sound a little, well, unappreciative. Well, here goes. How can you turn down free pizza?! Well, that's what I did tonight after eating some of it at High Beck. Ehh... nope, not for me. Think of the cheapest microwave pizza you can buy and that's pretty much what you get. I was hoping for at least Tombstone quality, but nope. There was some comedy involved tonight, though, like when I went down to the bathroom - check out above you on the way down the stairs, there are some nice pieces of dangling ceiling that you might catch with your eye if you're lucky - and went into the stall only to find there was 1) no door on the stall, 2) a nice graffitied death threat to the president, and 3) no seat on the toilet. I'm not one to complain about bathrooms, but I swear that at any moment the Loch Ness monster might have sprung out of that very toilet and had its way with me. I hate giving bad reviews, but here it is in all its glory. Free pizza on Monday nights = not worth the trouble of finding parking. read more

Keep the pizza coming on Monday! Free pizza. Freedom isn't free, but Monday's pizza is!! High beck has a badass personality and attractive to the laid back peepz of Columbus. The drinks are cheap and strong, the bartenders are rowdy and gregarious. My two gin and tonics (...and two cbus ipas...) contributed to a fun night of ridiculous conversation and a wicked hangover on Tuesday morning. Yolo. Can't forget the games! This is the real impetus for returning to HB. Ping pong is sort of my thing. So is fuzball. The only Game you pay for is pool. There is always a solid showing on week nights and weekends, not to be mistaken for a crowd. Make no mistake, HB promises a chill great night. read more

High Beck is great. Love the location and its dive-bar vibe. Great place to meet up with a big group of friends. The bartenders are friendly (and a bit ornery!) and the drinks are cheap too. I played darts with my friends until 3 in the morning, fueled on greasy (and yummy) pizza. I feel like this could be my new "Cheers" bar! They have an outdoor patio, which is great for all you smokers (you can bring your drinks). It's especially great on these crisp fall evenings.... The food is typical bar food, so if you're jonesing for some grease with a side of saturated fat, you'll love it. :) read more

I like this place more and more each time I go. It's larger space with a long bar that hooks around into an area to play darts and on the other end of the bar is a pool table. I watched the Sugar Bowl here and they were giving out free Chili dogs, fresh popcorn, and peanuts. When we sat down they asked if we wanted food, drinks or nothing. As if it was totally acceptable to just come in and relax for the game without ordering anything! Really cool. The beer selection isn't amazing, but the prices are good. It's a laid back atmosphere and a good place to go for a meal or just drinks. One negative (and only in the winter) is the place is kind of like a wind tunnel each time the door is opened at the front. It gets a bit chilly, but nothing too bad. read more

I have been going to this spot for years and their turkey sandwich is the best in town. I always have a great time at High Beck and the staff is friendly and attentive. The bathroom is a little sketchy but other than that, it's a great place to hang out and catch up with friends. read more

Pretty average beer selection in what is ultimately just a very chill dive bar. The bartender wasn't very friendly when we asked what was on tap, telling us to "look for yourselves" if we wanted to know. We happened to be there on free pizza night, which occurs every Monday, and while the pizza was decent for being complimentary, they didn't make nearly enough for the patrons in the bar, and ran out of plates constantly without restocking. It's a nice place to meet up with friends for a few average drinks to shoot the shit. I haven't tried any of the bar food, but from my experience, this place is very average. I may go back if my friend, who's a regular, wants to meet there for a bit, but ultimately we ended up at a different bar with better food, drinks, and atmosphere. read more

High Beck Tavern is fine. Some folks rave over it. It's just an average bar, in my book. Decent tap selection, usually a few local brews available. Food is average freezer-to-fryer fare, which is often just fine. There's nothing bad about this place; it will facilitate a get-together of buds-over-suds. It's kind of a "political bar" -- the Dems have a regular meeting here, and it's host to fundraisers for judges and such. But it's not fancy. It's not divey either. It just is. My favorite thing about High Beck is the location -- it's a great jumping off point (or ending point) for many other bars of a similar style. (And it's within walking distance of my home.) I guess for the location, I prefer Jimmy V's patio or Gresso's nearby. A little better food at those places, and a little friendlier... not that High Beck completely fails in those categories. For divey goodness, I prefer "Low Beck" -- the distinguishing nickname for the Beck Tavern, which is about 10 blocks east of High Beck. I suppose when I think about what High Beck has to offer compared to other establishments in the area, I almost always end up somewhere else. read more
