The food is obviously the selling point. Classic, timeless menu items. Today I got the Mother Mohawk sandwich, which was incredible. The roast beef was juicy and flavorful, while the chicken salad provided a nice contrast and texture. Dipped in the sauce, it's a 10/10 sandwich. This is a nice "divey" kind of place that has good food and a good atmosphere. Everyone was mostly pleased with their meals with one issue (out of the 4 of us). My wife ordered her Cheeseburger Med-Well and it came to her Med-Rare which always grosses her out. They cooked it more for her. It's been a while since we've ventured down to German Village to visit The Old Mohawk but it never disappoints. The Old Mohawk is a German Village institution and rightly so. The place has a great old tavern atmosphere, a great menu, good food and great service. We had a seat right next to the front window and were able to enjoy the activity outside while enjoying our meal inside. I always forget about this Columbus mainstay and their turtle soup. Got the chance to visit again after many years and enjoyed trying the chicken salad quesadilla. Salad had a nice texture and seasoning and I enjoyed the crispy tortilla. Great, friendly service. Wife wanted to go back to Schmidt's since we loved it there the night before but as tourists and our first time in Columbus, I talked her into trying someplace else. We settled on this restaurant cuz we saw it the night before as we strolled the residential streets of German town looking for the crazy bookstore. It was a great choice in the end cuz we all LOVED each of our entrees and couldn't fathom why we hesitated to go here in the first place! Highly recommend- you won't regret our 3 entrees: the Bratwurst platter, soup and sandwich combo (wife raved about the sandwich she chose - The Mother Mohawk - sourdough bread instead of rye) and she's picky about her soup but she could not get enough of the tomato soup she chose. Went here on a recent trip to Columbus. The food was fantastic. I had the sandwich with roast beef and chicken salad (perhaps called the mohawk?) which was so interesting and delicious. I got the half soup half sandwich combo with the French onion soup. The soup was sooooo good, very deep rich flavor. Service was pretty good but maybe a tad slow which was understandable on a very busy Friday night. The ambiance wasn't the best. My friends and I were sort of shoved into a corner at the front of the restaurant that had seats that were pretty difficult to get into and out of. But overall we would probably return. read more

I think the most authentic Old Mohawk experience is sitting inside of the wood-themed, large barred restaurant. But for this Sunday brunch, I sat outside and enjoyed the sun and (relative) seclusion of their sidewalk patio. Yes, couples, children and pets made their way past us on the other side of the gated off patio, but it was hardly a distraction from the sunlight and good vibes in this chill German Village block. The Lasagna with Chorizo was a good choice. Adding a side house salad was an equally good choice. Having a draft Paloma may have been a better choice. The servers, despite being less than an hour from close, were super friendly, and they made me feel like I was part of everything. No clique-y vibes or disgruntled employees. Lots of joking and laughing from the staff when they weren't serving. -Food was delivered freakishly fast. We had barely got our beer when we had apps, and we had only managed to get the chili cooled enough for a few bites before entrees came out. The kitchen was really on top of things. -Really large selection of salad options. Their ranch was really delicious, but most importantly, all the salads felt like relatively "healthy" salads unlike many places that try to make them restaurant "quality" by stuffing them with cheese and other treat-y options. This could definitely be a place you could take someone who had to watch what they were eating for various reasons. -Prices were very, very reasonable, and we came away with a good meal without spending too much. -It was raining when we left, and staff was offering to walk people to their cars with their restaurant umbrella. Seriously, it was amazing. CONS: -No dedicated parking lot. There were decent available spots on a Thursday night at dinner, though. I ordered the Chef Salad; Mt wife, the Bratwurst Plate. They arrived well within 10 minutes - super fast - and both dishes were of reasonable or ample size. . My Cheff Salad was Complete and the ingredients were all very delicious and fresh. An added bonus was the house ranch dressing. I LOVE the Old Mohawk. Great atmosphere and it was the perfect place to go for a glass of wine and warm meal with a friend on a very rainy night! The homemade meatloaf was delicious with the green beans and mashed potatoes... however I will say I think the sauce / gravy that is on the meatloaf did not sit well and made me very sick the next morning. I pinpointed the cause of the sickness to really only be something I consumed at dinner that night and I put my money on the gravy... I have a sensitive stomach and it just did not agree with it I guess! The food was excellent and I do not believe I got food poisoning... just a little be careful to anyone else who might have a sensitive stomach - perhaps skip the gravy on the meatloaf and enjoy it as is! read more

I got together with a childhood friend that I have not seen in fifteen years for lunch at the Mohawk Restaurant. It was nice to hear that he was doing well in his profession and marriage. He has one child and a Golden Retriever named Rex. He chose the Mohawk Restaurant because we often came here forbrews while living off campus. The restaurant dates back to the 1920's and is reflected in the ambiance. Brick walls, dark wood flooring, historic photos on the wall and an antique bar. As for the food, I ordered the Mother Mohawk (grilled roast beef, homemade chicken salad with swiss cheese on marbled bread). They offer a unique mustard with caraway horseradish sauce) $13.95. It paired well with a local brew they called CBC Bodhi $5.75. One brew often follows another. The service was sufficiently speedy considering the number of tables inside and outside she needed to attend to. She appreciated the tip. My childhood friend ordered the Bratwurst sandwich also $13.95. There is only street parking in the German Village. read more

Came here for a "late" dinner around 9PM on a Thursday, as most places in Columbus seem to close at 9PM. It was pretty empty but had a very homey, old school vibe. Our waitress/hostess greeted us and got us seated quickly. Food wise, I ordered the soup and sandwich combo and we got fried pickles to start. We wanted the fried cauliflower but they've been out for months apparently. The pickles came out hot and weren't overly pickley and well battered and crisp. I actually enjoyed it with the ranch. I got the mother mohawk and french onion soup as my main and again, I found both to be very enjoyable. I wish the bread in the soup wasn't soaked through so I could have some textural contrast but the melty cheese on top helped. Went here for the first time and overall had a good experience! It is a cute little place in the German Village neighborhood. The Old Mohawk does have a fairly large menu. We enough ended up getting the BBQ Bacon Burger with fries. I enjoyed the burger, but there was just a little too much BBQ on it for me and made it a bit messy - would get it on the side in the future. The fries and service were great! This trip we totally lucked out and found street parking directly across from the restaurant and there was no wait to be seated. We started with an appetizer tonight and went with the Fried Smokey Bacon Gouda Bites served with a marinara dipping sauce ($7.99). Theses are so good and the marina is totally yummy and I want to know what else they use it in. I had such a hard time deciding as everything sounded so good. After what seemed like forever I decided on the French Dip w/au jus . It was served on a toasted bun w/sliced roast beef and topped with grilled onions & mushrooms, and provolone cheese ($12.50). It was a great choice and really liked the au jus. I even dipped my onion rings in it. I took my sandwich to the next level and added some of the caraway horseradish sauce to it. My partner had the Mother Mohawk sandwich. It had grilled roast beef AND homemade chicken salad. It was topped w/ Swiss cheese and served on a marble rye bread. It had a side of the delicious caraway horseradish sauce that I dipped into too ($12.50). Fun Fact - The sandwich was introduced in 1985 and is a customer favorite. The Old Mohawk has been a staple in German Village and Columbus for decades. My partner remembers his Mom loving this place too when she was in school many years ago. Our servers have always been super with just the proper amount of attentiveness. I got the Mother Mohawkas, my favorite signature item, grilled roast beef, and homemade chicken salad topped with Swiss cheese on marble rye bread and served with a side of caraway horseradish sauce. Wow. It sounds ridiculous, but it is delicious. I also enjoy Santa Fe Beef Quesadilla Taco beef, black beans, lettuce, corn relish, and diced tomato. It was grilled in a sun-dried tomato tortilla, served with salsa and sour cream. One of my wife's favorites is Crustless Pizza, Penne tossed with marinara, topped with mozzarella and provolone cheese, and baked to a golden brown. I will be honest with you, I don't know why this restaurant has such great reviews It is definitely an old-timey restaurant, clear by the fact that they have turtle soup on the menu. Service was not good - our waiter hardly spoke to us and seemed like she definitely didn't want to be there and didn't care about the customers. They have some pretty eclectic offerings; I can't say I've ever seen a sandwich before with both deli turkey and chicken salad on it, but they have one here. I got the hummus plate. It was kind of weird having piles of chopped veggies around it. If you're going to give veggies, make them dippable so you can eat the hummus with it. I wasn't sure what to do with the huge pile of diced red onion and had the tomatoes been wedges instead it would've been easier to eat them. The hummus itself was incredibly thick and not creamy and could kill a vampire with the amount of raw garlic they put in it. Holy cow. My husband got the BBQ bacon burger and he said it was good. I tried the wedge fries and that is by far this restaurant's saving grace. They were crunchy, crispy, and delicious. I could have eaten a whole plate of those. If you can't eat dairy (it gives me motion sickness), there are not many options for you here, either. Overall I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more

I've been revisiting restaurants that have been Columbus staples and that I haven't been to in awhile lately, and of course the Old Mohawk definitely hits that description. There is always a lot of great choices to choose from, including GF and vegetarian options. We started with sweet potato tots that are delicious. My friend and I went with salads, me the california salad and him the chef salad- and they were so great, and full of ingredients- my fav. My nephew got Mac and cheese- his complaint was it was too cheesy (this is not a complaint about the Old Mohawk, more just that he is young and wanted Kraft Mac and cheese style) so my friend took it home and said it heated up excellently and was even better the next day. Overall it was a good experience, and I'll keep it on the list of places in Columbus that have held up over the years. read more
